Eclipsing binaries with M-type components are still rare objects. Strong observational biases have made that today only a few eclipsing binaries with component masses below 0.6 M and well-determined fundamental properties are known. However, even in these small numbers the detailed comparison of the observed masses and radii with theoretical predictions has revealed large disagreements. Current models seem to predict radii of stars in the 0.4--0.8 M range to be some 5--15% smaller than observed. Given the high accuracy of the empirical measurements (a few percent in both mass and radius), these differences are highly significant. I review all the observational evidence on the properties of M-type stars and discuss a possible scenario based on stellar activity to explain the observed discrepancies.  相似文献

A catalog of massive (⩾10 M ) stars in binary and multiple systems with well-known masses and luminosities has been compiled. The catalog is analyzed using a theoretical mass-luminosity relation. This relation allows both normal main-sequence stars and stars with peculiarities: with clear manifestations of mass transfer, mass accretion, and axial rotation, to be identified. Least-squares fitting of the observational data in the range of stellar masses 10M M ≲ 50 M yields the relation LM 2.76. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

The evolution of close binary systems was followed for ten systems with the initial mass of the primary in the range 1–4M and with different initial mass ratios and initial separations. A brief discussion of the evolution of the contact component is presented for two separate cases: when the primary reaches its Roche lobe during central hydrogen burning (case A) and after the exhaustion of hydrogen in the center (case B).The models obtained are compared with observed semi-detached systems separately for massive (with total mass greater than 5M ) and low mass (with total mass below 4M ) binaries. It is shown that the contact components of the observed massive binaries are probably burning hydrogen in the core. On the contrary, the majority of contact components of the observed low-mass binaries are burning hydrogen in the shell. The observed distribution of such binaries as a function of different luminosity excesses of contact components seems to indicate that their origin is connected with case A rather than with case B.  相似文献

Individual tidal torque λ 2,E 2 and apsidal-motion k 2 constants were calculated for 112 close eclipsing binaries (CEBs) with Detached components belonging to the Main Sequence (DMS-type) from the catalogue by Svechnikov and Perevozkina (Catalogue of orbital elements, masses and luminosities of variable stars of DMS-type and some results of its statistical treatment, Ural State University Press, Yekaterinburg, pp. 1–5, 1999) and for 95 detached binaries taken from the catalogue by Torres et al. (Astron. Astrophys. Rev. 18:67, 2010) on the base of theoretical evolutionary stellar models including tidal torque constants by Claret (Astron. Astrophys. 424:919, 2004). A method of the inversion of model track grid into isochrones was formulated as a complex interpolation procedure for DMS-binaries data. Sets of isochrones were computed in k 2M, k 2R, λ 2M, λ 2R, E 2M, and E 2R planes. Calculated tidal torque constants allow to test stellar structure theory by comparing observed and estimated values of apsidal motion period and analyzing the correlation between timescales of synchronization, circularization, magnetic braking, as well as nuclear burning of DMS-components.  相似文献

The ratiosC 1/C 2 of the constants defining the equipotential surfaces which describe the external forms of the components of a close binary system have been calculated on the basis of evolutionary models. Theoretical systems have been considered allowing for a wide range of input parameters (masses and separation) and taking into account the evolutionary effects on the radii of the stars during their Main-Sequence lifetime. The systems have not undergone any transfer of matter and are representative of detached binaries with Main-Sequence components. The ratios of the constants are confined in limited intervals and, for the highest values of the mass-ratio, they are clustered around the unit.  相似文献

It is shown that during contact eclipsing binaries evolution under the influence of stellar wind, magnetic stellar wind and with matter transfer by gas flow, in binary stellar systems there may take place a process of star merger (low mass stars) within 105–107 yr and a fast increase of distance between stars of massive binaries. W UMa-type stars are a finite evolutionary stage of very close and low mass binary pairs. As for contact systems of early spectral types (CE-systems), they are more varied in evolution.  相似文献

Composite-spectrum binary stars generally consist of a late-type giant and a main-sequence star of type A or B. Their spectra are therefore rather confusing; but by a technique of digital subtraction of the spectra of appropriate single late-type giants, composite spectra can be split into their individual components. In favourable cases the radial velocities of both components can be measured and the mass ratio determined. The procedures are illustrated by reference to HR 6902, a fifth-magnitude composite-spectrum binary. Its components are shown to have spectral types of G9 II and B8 V, with a mass ratio of 1.31, and its orbit is determined. There is some evidence that the system shows eclipses. If it does, the masses of the components are 3.9 and 3.0M⊙ respectively, and HR 6902 becomes the sixth known member of the important class ofζ Aur binaries.  相似文献

From the values of period changes for 6 close binary stars the mass transfer rate was calculated. Comparing these values Mt with the values of shell masses Msh, the expression $$lg \dot M_t = \begin{array}{*{20}c} {4.24} \\ { \pm 24} \\ \end{array} + \begin{array}{*{20}c} {0.63} \\ { \pm 6} \\ \end{array} lg M_{sh} $$ Was derived. The analysis of this expression points out the initial character of the outflow of matter, and one may determine the time interval of the substitution of the shell matter. So one may conclude that for a certain mass transfer rate, a certain amount of matter accumulates in the nearby regions of the system. The study of orbital period changes of close binary stellar systems led to the idea that these secular and irregular changes are due to the mass loss and to the redistribution of masses in a close binary. Secular changes of orbital periods are known for approximately 400 eclipsing binary stars. For many stars, including cataclysmic binaries, irregular period changes are known. Thus, the mass loss and the matter redistribution in close binaries are often observed phenomena.  相似文献

The supernova yields of r-process elements are obtained as a function of the mass of their progenitor stars from the abundance patterns of extremely metal-poor stars on the left-side [{Ba/Mg}]--[{Mg/H}] boundary with a procedure proposed by Tsujimoto and Shigeyama. The ejected masses of r-process elements associated with stars of progenitor mass M ms ≤ 18 M are infertile sources and the SNe II with 20 M M ms ≤ 40 M are the dominant source of r-process nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy. The ratio of these stars 20 M M ms ≤ 40 M with compared to the all massive stars is about∼ 18%. In this paper, we present a simple model that describes a star's [r/Fe] in terms of the nucleosynthesis yields of r-process elements and the number of SN II explosions. Combined the r-process yields obtained by our procedure with the scatter model of the Galactic halo, the observed abundance patterns of the metal-poor stars can be well reproduced.  相似文献

The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram of the Large Magellanic Cloud compiled recently by Fitzpatrick & Garmany (1990) shows that there are a number of supergiant stars immediately redward of the main sequence although theoretical models of massive stars with normal hydrogen abundance predict that the region 4.5 ≤ logT eff ≤ 4.3 should be un-populated (“gap”). Supergiants having surface enrichment of helium acquired for example from a previous phase of accretion from a binary companion, however, evolve in a way so that the evolved models and observed data are consistent — an observation first made by Tuchman & Wheeler (1990). We compare the available optical data on OB supergiants with computed evolutionary tracks of massive stars of metallicity relevant to the LMC with and without helium-enriched envelopes and conclude that a large fraction ( 60 per cent) of supergiant stars may occur in binaries. As these less evolved binaries will later evolve into massive X-ray binaries, the observed number and orbital period distribution of the latter can constrain the evolutionary scenarios of the supergiant binaries. The distributions of post main sequence binaries and closely related systems like WR + O stars are bimodal-consisting of close and wide binaries in which the latter type is numerically dominating. When the primary star explodes as a supernova leaving behind a neutron star, the system receives a kick and in some cases can lead to runaway O-stars. We calculate the expected space velocity distribution for these systems. After the second supernova explosion, the binaries in most cases, will be disrupted leading to two runaway neutron stars. In between the two explosions, the first born neutron star’s spin evolution will be affected by accretion of mass from the companion star. We determine the steady-state spin and radio luminosity distributions of single pulsars born from the massive stars under some simple assumptions. Due to their great distance, only the brightest radio pulsars may be detected in a flux-limited survey of the LMC. A small but significant number of observable single radio pulsars arising out of the disrupted massive binaries may appear in the short spin period range. Most pulsars will have a low velocity of ejection and therefore may cluster around the OB associations in the LMC.  相似文献

The IUE observations do not favor the chromospheric origin of typical chromospheric emission lines, of the doublet 2800 MgII first of all, in close binary systems SX Cas and 22 Vul, both with a cool giant-supergiant as primary, and a hot B7–B8 star as secondary. Here, it is shown that the concept of common chromospheres – roundchroms can explain the unusual fluxes of chromospheric emission lines in these systems. The hot components of these binaries – B type stars, themselves are assumed to represent local binary systems with a white dwarf and an accretion disc: the latter being the source of generation of transition zone type high excitation emission lines 1240 NV, 1400 SiIV, 1550 CIV, etc. It is concluded, that roundchroms of giant sizes, of order of 100 R⊙ and larger, are not rare events for the RS CVn type binary systems. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Based on two high-dispersion spectra of the close binary BW Boo, we have detected lines of the secondary component whose contribution to the combined spectrum does not exceed 2%. We have determined the rotation velocities of the components and spectroscopic orbital elements. Numerous lines of neutral and ionized iron have been used to determine the effective temperature and surface gravity for the primary component. The photometric light curves for this binary have been solved for the first time. Its primary component is an A2Vm star with a mass of 2 ± 0.1M and a radius of 1.9 ± 0.4R . Its rotation velocity is 2 km s−1, which is a factor of 18 lower than the pseudo-synchronous velocity for this component. The G6 secondary component, a T Tau star, has a rotation velocity of 17 km s−1, amass of 1.1M , and a radius of 1 R . The age of the binary has been estimated to be 107 yr.  相似文献

We propose that single stars in the mass range 4–6·5M , that explode as Supernovae of Type I, are totally disrupted by the explosion and form shell-type remnants. More massive single stars which explode as Supernovae of Type II also give rise to shell-type remnants, but in this case a neutron star or a black hole is left behind. The first supernova explosion in a close binary also gives rise to a shell-type supernova remnant. The Crab-like filled-centre supernova remnants are formed by the second supernova explosion in a close binary. The hybrid supernova remnants, consisting of a filled centre surrounded by a shell, are formed if there is an active neutron star inside the shell.  相似文献

The evolution of Population I stars (X = 0.7, Z = 0.02) with initial masses 40M M ZAMS ≤ 120M until core hydrogen exhaustion has been computed. Models of evolutionary sequences have been used as the initial conditions in solving the equations of radiation hydrodynamics that describe the spherically symmetric motion of a self-gravitating gas. Stars with initial masses M ZAMS ≥ 50M are shown to become unstable against radial oscillations during the main-sequence evolution. The instability growth rate and the limit-cycle oscillation amplitude increase as the star evolves and as its initial mass increases. The pulsational instability is attributable to the iron Z-bump κ mechanism (T ∼ 2 × 105 K). Convection that transfers from 20 to 50% of the total energy flux and, thus, reduces the efficiency of the κ mechanism emerges in the same layers. The periods of the radial oscillations of main-sequence stars lie within the range from 0.09 to 8 days. The boundaries of the instability region of radial pulsations in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram have been determined and observational criteria for revealing pulsating variable main-sequence stars have been proposed.  相似文献

Main results of computations of evolution for massive close binaries (10M +9.4M , 16M +15M , 32M +30M , 64M +60M ) up to oxygen exhaustion in the core are described. Mass exchange starting in core hydrogen, shell hydrogen and core helium burning stages was studied. Computations were performed assuming both the Ledoux and Schwarzschild stability criteria for semiconvection. The influence of UFI-neutrino emission on evolution of close binaries was investigated. The results obtained allow to outline the following evolutionary chain: two detached Main-Sequence stars — mass exchange — Wolf-Rayet star or blue supergiant plus main sequence star — explosion of the initially more massive star appearing as a supernova event — collapsed or neutron star plus Main-Sequence star, that may be observed as a runaway star — mass exchange leading to X-rays emission — collapsed or neutron star plus WR-star or blue supergiant — second explosion of supernova that preferentially disrupts the system and gives birth to two single high spatial velocity pulsars.Numerical estimates concerning the number and properties of WR-stars, pulsars and X-ray sources are presented. The results are in favour of the existence of UFI-neutrino and of the Ledoux criterion for describing semiconvection. Properties of several well-known X-ray sources and the binary pulsar are discussed on base of evolutionary chain of close binaries.  相似文献

We investigate the relative motion of three stars, ADS 7446, 9346, and 9701, based on long-term observations with the Pulkovo 26-inch refractor. The relative motion of all three stars shows a perturbation that could be produced by the gravitational influence of an invisible companion. For ADS 7446, we have determined the orbit of the photocenter with a period of 7.9 yr; the mass of the companion is more than 0.4M . For ADS 9346, we have determined the radial velocities of the components: −14.60 km s−1 for A and −13.94 km s−1 for B. For ADS 9346 and 9701, we have determined the dynamical parallaxes, 24 and 20 mas, respectively, which are larger than those in the Hipparcos catalog by 5 mas, and calculated the orbits by the apparent motion parameter (AMP) method. The new orbit of ADS 9346 is: a = 5″.2, P = 2035 yr, and e = 0.46 at the system’s mass M = 2.5M . The new orbits of ADS 9701 are: (a = 2″.9, P = 829 yr, e = 0.54, M = 4.3M ) and (a = 3″.8, P = 1157 yr, e = 0.53, M = 5.0M ).  相似文献

The helium and nitrogen enrichment of the atmospheres of early B-type stars during the main sequence (MS) evolutionary phase is re-analysed. It is confirmed that the effect depends on both the aget and the stellar massM. For example, the helium abundanceHe/H increases by 0.04 (60–70% of initial value) for stars withM=8–13M and by 0.025 (about 30%) for stars withM=6M . The nitrogen abundance rises by three times forM=14M and by, two times forM=10M . According to the latest theoretical computations, the observed appearance of CNO-cycled material in surface layers of the stars can be a result of the rotationally induced mixing, in particular, of the turbulent diffusion. Carbon is in deficiency in B stars, but unexpectedly does not show any correlation with the stellar age. However it is shown that the total C+N abundance derived for early B stars conflicts with the theory.Basing on modern data the helium enrichment is first examined in O-type MS stars, as well as in components of binaries. As compared with early B stars, the He abundance for more massive O stars and for components of binaries show a different relation with the relative aget/t MS . Namely during short time betweent/t MS 0.5 and 0.7 a sharp jump is observed up toHe/H=0.2 and more. In particular, such a jump is typical for fast rotating O stars (v sini200 km s–1),. Therefore the effect of mixing depends on massM, relative aget/t MS , rotational velocityv and duplicity. The mass problem (the discrepancy betweenM ev andM sp ) is also analysed, because some authors consider it as a possible evidence of early mixing, too. It is shown that the accurate data for components of binaries lead to the conclusion that the discrepancy is less than 30%. Such a difference can be removed at the expense of theM ev lowering, if the displacement of evolutionary tracks, owing to the rotationally induced mixing is taken into consideration.  相似文献

We consider a model for the cyclic activity of young binary stars that accrete matter from the remnants of a protostellar cloud. If the orbit of such a binary system is inclined at a small angle to the line of sight, then the streams of matter and the density waves excited in the circumbinary disk can screen the primary component of the binary from the observer. To study these phenomena by the SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics) method, we have computed grids of hydrodynamic models for binary systems based on which we have constructed the light curves as a function of the orbital phase. The main emphasis is on investigating the properties of the brightness oscillations. Therefore, the model parameters were varied within the following ranges: the component mass ratio q = M 2: M 1 = 0.2–0.5 and the eccentricity = 0–0.7. The parameter that defined the binary viscosity was also varied. We adopted optical grain characteristics typical of circumstellar dust. Our computations have shown that bimodal oscillations are excited in binaries with eccentric orbits, provided that the binary components do not differ too much in mass. In this case, the ratios of the periods and amplitudes of the bimodal oscillations and their shape depend strongly on the inclination of the binary plane and its orientation relative to the observer. Our analysis shows that the computed light curves can be used in interpreting the cyclic activity of UX Ori stars.  相似文献

The large amounts of dust detected in sub-millimeter galaxies and quasars at high redshift pose a challenge to galaxy formation models and theories of cosmic dust formation. At z>6 only stars of relatively high mass (>3 M) are sufficiently short-lived to be potential stellar sources of dust. This review is devoted to identifying and quantifying the most important stellar channels of rapid dust formation. We ascertain the dust production efficiency of stars in the mass range 3–40 M using both observed and theoretical dust yields of evolved massive stars and supernovae (SNe) and provide analytical expressions for the dust production efficiencies in various scenarios. We also address the strong sensitivity of the total dust productivity to the initial mass function. From simple considerations, we find that, in the early Universe, high-mass (>3 M) asymptotic giant branch stars can only be dominant dust producers if SNe generate ≲3×10−3 M of dust whereas SNe prevail if they are more efficient. We address the challenges in inferring dust masses and star-formation rates from observations of high-redshift galaxies. We conclude that significant SN dust production at high redshift is likely required to reproduce current dust mass estimates, possibly coupled with rapid dust grain growth in the interstellar medium.  相似文献

The observation of microlensing events towards the Large Magellanic Cloud and Galactic Bulge discovers a new population of our Galaxy which is that of dark bodies with masses of the order of 0.1M . Astronomy has now a unique ability: one can use the microlensing as a space telescope with extremely high angular resolution. Here we discuss the opportunity of the application of this ability to observation of close binaries. Stars in a binary system move around their barycenter and as a result the apparent motion is modulated by binary motion. The light curve of this microlensing event becomes nonsymmetrical. If a binary has two stars with different spectral types, one can expect significant variation of color during microlensing effect. Accurate light curves for some typical binaries have been calculated and are presented here. The total fraction of binaries in our Galaxy is around 50%. Therefore one can expect half of the microlensing events to have nonsymmetrical and wavelength depending light curves which would indicate that background star is binary. Our opinion is that the absence of these light curves are due to some selection effect. This leads to an underestimation of the density of the dark body population in our Galaxy by a factor of about two.  相似文献
