Full-disk images from the Cartesian Full-Disk Telescope no. 2 (CFDT2) were used to study the center-to-limb (CLV) variation of facular contrast in two colors. The CFDT2 images, which have 2.5 arc sec pixels, were obtained during the summer months of 1993, 1994 and 1995. In order to minimize the bias in finding faint facular features in continuum images, we have used coaligned images obtained in the Ca K-line to identify faculae. Faculae were sorted into 20 annular bins of equal width. To reduce the effects of seeing, faculae were not identified closer to the limb than =0.2. The facular pixel contrasts were fitted to various trial functions. The contrast in the blue filter (470.6 nm) rose from 0.122% at disk center to 12.2% at =0.2. The contrast in the red filter (672.3 nm) rose from 0.13% at disk center to 8.16% at =0.2. We have also analyzed the facular contrasts multiplied by their -value to obtain an estimate of facular flux tube contrasts. These flux tube contrasts increased roughly linearly from =0.95 to 0.25. The blue flux tube contrast reached a maximum of 2.48% near =0.25. The red flux tube contrast reached a maximum of 1.59% at =0.2. These contrast values are not corrected for the filling factor. The blue curve leveled off slightly betwen =0.25 and 0.2 while the red curve showed no deviation from its linear trend. These results may provide some support for the hot wall model of facular flux tubes.  相似文献

A new high photometric precision reflectance spectrum of Saturn's rings covering the spectral region 0.65 to 2.5-μm is presented and three previously unreported absorption features at 1.25, 0.85, and probably 1.04 μm are identified. The 1.25- and 1.04-μm absorptions are due to water ice. The 0.85-μm feature may be due to a combination of 0.81- and 0.90-μm ice absorptions but this feature appears too strong relative to the 1.04-μm band to be completely explained by weater ice. Another possibility is that the 0.85-μm band is due to Fe3+-bearing minerals in an ice-mineral mixture. This explanation could also account for the drop in the visible and ultraviolet reflectance and the rise in reflectance around 3.6 μm. Finally, a composite spectrum from 0.325 to 4.08 μm is presented which will be useful for future analysis and laboratory studies.  相似文献

Comet Kohoutek has been observed at wavelengths between 1.25 μm and 12.5 μm before and after perihelion passage extending to comet-Sun distance 1 AU. The luminosity and the variation of brightness with comet-Sun distance in the infrared are extraordinarily similar to those of Comet Ikeya-Seki (1965f). Apart from an apparent “silicate” emission feature near 10 μm, the spectrum of the comet between 3.5 μm and 12.5 μm is close to that expected from emission by grey particles. Hotter particles and scattered sunlight produce the bulk of the 1.25- to 3.5 μm emission.  相似文献

Apparent radius, visual brightness, effective temperature and absolute radius for 416 B5 v-F5 v stars of the catalogue of the Geneva Observatory (Rufener, 1976) have been determined.Twenty-eight stars, anomalous in log versus (m v)0 diagrams, have been singled out. A good correlation for seven stars, in common with the list of Hanbury Brownet al. (1974), has been found. Similar parameters determined for 279 B5 v-F5 v stars of two preceding papers (Fracassiniet al., 1973, 1975) have allowed us to determine the averaged diagrams logq v/q, logR/R and logT e versus (B-V)0 for 695 B5 v-F5 v stars.Moreover, in the present paper a good correlation logq v/q versus logR/R and careful relation M v=–7.40logR/R +3.31 for B5 v-F5 v stars have been determined. Plain correlations between logR/R and blanketing parameterm 2 for some spectral types seem to point out that there arereal differences in the absolute radii of stars of thesame spectral type, in agreement with recent researches on the HR diagram (Houck and Fesen, 1978).Systematic differences between double (spectroscopic and visual) and single stars are found. In particular, the averaged relation m 2 versus logR/R shows that A2 v-F5 v double stars may have a higher metallicity indexm 2 and smaller absolute radii than single stars. Finally, the diagram logv sini versus logR/R confirms some properties of binary systems found by other researchers (Huang, 1966; Plavec, 1970; Levato, 1974; Kitamura and Kondo, 1978).Thesis for the degree in Applied Physics.  相似文献

We have observed Rhea (S5) at 1.6 μm and 2.2 μm at Mt. Wilson using the Caltech photometer on the 1.52m and 2.54m telescopes. The infrared spectral reflectances relative to 0.55μm are 0.8 (±0.1 p.e.) at 1.65μm and 0.6 (±0.1 p.e.) at 2.2μm. Such absorption bands in the near infrared are not consistent with spectra of most rocks or minerals; even carbonaceous chondritic materials have nearly flat reflectances over this spectral region. Frosts, however, have strong absorption bands in the 1–3μm region. In particular, the broadband infrared reflectances of Rhea are similar to those of the Galilean satellites Europa (J2) and Ganymede (J3) and also the rings of Saturn (all of which are known from high resolution scans to have water frosts on their surfaces). The broadband photometry does not have sufficient resolution to identify the frost species: but Rhea's low density, high albedo and relatively flat reflectance from 0.3μm to 1.1μm as well as the low infrared reflectances reported here are consistent with the presence of water ice on Rhea's surface.  相似文献

ISOPHOT has been used to obtain low resolution spectra from 2.5μm to 5μm and 5.8μm to 11.6μm and multi-aperture photometry at 60μm of several evolved stars; oxygen-rich and carbon-rich (including the peculiar carbon-rich stars R CrB and RY Sgr). R CrB was observed early in the ISO mission, 3 weeks after it had been at minimum light. Another spectrum was obtained several months later. The second spectrum shows that the broad plateau (from around 6μm to 8μm) is still present but the flux density has declined from 60Jy to 50Jy. The spectrum for RY Sgr shows the same type of plateau. The multi-aperture data suggest that the dust shells are resolved around R CrB, RY Sgr, Y CVn and RS Lib. We describe three recent infrared cameras, developed in France and based on mosaïcs of infrared detectors. They are optimized for ground-based observations in the 1–5 m or 5–17 m ranges. We present 10 and 20 μm spectra of comet Hale-Bopp taken at UKIRT on 1996 June 20 and 1996 September 29.The 10 μm spectra clearly show a strong silicate feature with peaks at 10.0 and 11.2 μm. The 20 μm spectrum on September 29 has strong excess flux relative to a blackbody and a peak near 19μm, in good agreement with the ISO SWS spectra obtained a week later. However, the 20 μm spectrum on June 20 has significantly lower flux than would be expected based on a blackbody extrapolation from the flux at 12.5 μm. The RISE/PSPT (Radiative Inputs from the Sun to the Earth/Precision Solar Photometric Telescopes) experiment will attain high differential photometric precision in full-disk solar images with 1 arc sec pixels. To achieve this spatial resolution it will be necessary to use frame selection techniques to minimize the effects of atmospheric seeing. We report here on experiments to use a simple scintillation monitor as a trigger or veto for imaging observations.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. We consider the possibility that gravitational energy may play a local as well as global role in the behavior of matter in strong gravitational fields. A particular idealized equation, suggested as representing uniform energy density in general relativity, is examined, and its stability with respect to oscillatory and convective perturbations shown to be consistent with general relativistic hydrodynamics, subject to a new physical effect predicted for the behavior of fluids moving in strong fields. We calculate from this idealized equation the mass of a non-rotating neutron star, obtaining a maximum surface redshift ofz=2.48 and a maximum core mass of 9.79 14 –1/2 M. This compares withz=2.00 and 11.4 14 –1/2 M for a Schwarzschild star (=const.) and 6.8 14 –1/2 M for a causal star (dP/d1).  相似文献

The present paper is a direct continuation of papers by Duboshin, 1973; Kondurar, 1974 and Vidyakin, 1972 in which the existence of one kind of Lagrange (triangle) and Euler (rectilinear) solutions of the general problem of the translatory-rotary motion of three absolutely rigid bodies was proved.In the present paper the following problem is solved: Whether there exist exact special solutions in the general problem of the translatory-rotary motion of three rigid bodies, which have three mutually perpendicular symmetry planes, analogous to the Lagrange solutions in the problem of three point bodies.In this paper it is proved that such solutions exist if the bodies possess a definite structure and orientation. In particular, the conditions for the existence of Lagrange solutions of the problem of three rigid bodies have been found.We showed that bodies possessing three mutually perpendicular symmetry planes (both in form and in the distribution of the masses) are situated in a rotating system of coordinates in such a way that one symmetry plane passes through the centres of mass of the bodies and the other symmetry planes are oriented in a definite manner. The orientation of the bodies depends on their structures. In particular, if rigid bodies possess a geometric-dynamic symmetry in respect to an axis and the plane perpendicular to this axis, then, according to the terminology of G. N. Duboshin (Duboshin, 1961) the solutions of the three floats, three spokes, three shafts types and the cases of the combinations of the bodies: float, spoke and shaft are admitted.In the general case the centres of mass of the bodies form the apexes of an unequilateral triangle.

Abstract— Nine seismic-reflection profiles and four continuous core holes define the gross structural and stratigraphic framework of the outer rim of the Chesapeake Bay impact crater. The rim is manifested as a 90 km diameter ring of terraced normal-fault blocks, which forms a ~320 m–1200 m high rim escarpment. The top of the rim escarpment is covered by a 20 m–30 m thick ejecta blanket. The escarpment encircles a flat-floored annular trough, which is partly filled with an ~250 m thick breccia lens (Exmore breccia). The Exmore breccia overlies a 200 m–800 m thick interval of slumped sedimentary megablocks, which, in turn, rests on crystalline basement rocks. All postimpact strata (upper Eocene to Quaternary) sag structurally into the annular trough, and most units also thicken as they cross the rim into the crater. Postimpact compaction and subsidence of the Exmore breccia have created extensive normal faulting in overlying strata.  相似文献

A model for the energy balance and chemical equilibrium of the gas in photodissociation regions at the edge of molecular clouds, which are illuminated by strong FUV fields (6 eV ≦ hv ≦ 13.6 eV), has been developed. This model is used to calculate the emergent intensities in the fine structure lines of OI (63 μm, 145 μm), CI (609 μm, 370 μm), and CII (158 μm) and in the low-lying rotational transitions of CO. The numerical results show that column densities in the range 2 × 1017 to 2 × 1018 cm2 can be expected from the C+/C/CO transition region at the edge of molecular clouds. This difference with previous chemical calculations is partly due to a higher assumed carbon abundance, partly due to the charge exchange reactions of C+ with S and SiO, and partly due to carbon self-shielding which is taken into account. A detailed model is constructed for the Orion photodissociation region, which explains the observed OI (63 μm, 145 μm), CII (158 μm), CI (609 μm), and CO emission. In this model the CI (609 μm) emission originates in the warm (50°K) molecular gas behind Θ1C Ori but near the surface of OMCI.  相似文献

Observations of linear and circular polarization in five colour bands during a highly active state of VV Puppis in January-86 are reported. A strong linear polarization pulse with the maximum in the blue, PB22 %, is observed at the end of the bright phase when the active pole is at the limb and a weaker secondary pulse, PB7 %, is seen in the beginning of the bright phase, when the active pole reappears. Strong positive circular polarization is also observed in the blue and the ultraviolet, PUPB18 %, PV10 % during the bright phase. The circular polarization reverses the sign in the B and V bands during the faint phase and a negative polarization hump is seen when the active pole crosses the limb. The circular polarization in the V band reaches the value PV–10% at the hump, after which it remains near PV–5% during the faint phase. This is probably due to radiation coming from the second, less active pole and accretion thus takes place onto both poles. The wavelength dependences of the positive and negative parts of the circular polarization curve are different and no polarization reversal is seen in the U band. The position angle of the linear polarization is well determined during a large portion of the cycle, especially in the V band, thanks to the activity from both poles. A best fit to the position angle curve, taking into account also the duration of the positive circular polarization phase interval =0.40 (in the V band), yields the values of orbital inclination i=78°±2° and the colatitude of the active magnetic pole =146°±2°. The relatively good fit to the position angle data indicates that the simple dipole model is nearly correct in the case of VV Puppis. Some wavelength dependence is, however, seen in the position angle curves, especially in the I band where the slope / at the main pulse is considerably smaller than in the other bands. The shape of the position angle curves changes also in the blue and the ultraviolet around the middle of the bright phase. Abstract— We investigate the action of the martian atmosphere on entering meteoroids for present and past atmospheres with various surface pressures to predict the smallest observable craters, and to understand the implications for the size distributions of craters on Mars and meteoroids in space. We assume different strengths appropriate to icy, stone, and iron bodies and test the results against available data on terrestrial bolides. Deceleration, ablation, and fragmentation effects are included. We find that the smallest icy, stone, and iron meteoroids to hit the martian ground at crater forming speeds of ≥500 m/s have diameters of about 2 m, 0.03‐0.9 m (depending on strength), and 0.01 m, respectively, in the current atmosphere. For hypothetical denser past atmospheres, the cutoff diameters rise. At a surface pressure of 100 mb, the cutoff diameters are about 24 m, 5–12 m, and 0.14 m for the 3 classes. The weaker stony bodies in the size range of about 1–30 m may explode at altitudes of about 10–20 km above the ground. These figures imply that under the present atmosphere, the smallest craters made by these objects would be as follows: by ice bodies, craters of diameter (D) ?8 m, by stones about 0.5–6 m, and by irons, about 0.3 m. A strong depletion of craters should, thus, occur at diameters below about 0.3 m to 5 m. Predicted fragmentation and ablation effects on weak meteoroids in the present atmosphere may also produce a milder depletion below D ?500 m, relative to the lunar population. But, this effect may be difficult to detect in present data because of additional losses of small craters due to sedimentation, dunes, and other obliteration effects. Craters in strewn fields, caused by meteoroid fragmentation, will be near or below present‐day resolution limits, but examples have been found. These phenomena have significant consequences. Under the present atmosphere, the smallest (decimeter‐scale) craters in sands and soils could be quickly obliterated but might still be preserved on rock surfaces, as noted by Hörz et al. (1999). Ancient crater populations, if preserved, could yield diagnostic signatures of earlier atmospheric conditions. Surfaces formed under past denser atmospheres (few hundred mbar), if preserved by burial and later exposed by exhumation, could show: a) striking depletions of small craters (few meter sizes up to as much as 200 m), relative to modern surfaces; b) more clustered craters due to atmospheric breakup; and c) different distributions of meteorite types, with 4 m to 200 m craters formed primarily by irons instead of by stones as on present‐day Mars. Megaregolith gardening of the early crust would be significant but coarser than the gardening of the ancient lunar uplands.  相似文献

Broad-bandpass flux measurements with effective wavelengths at 20, 27 and 85 μm are presented for four asteroids—2 Pallas, 7 Iris, 15 Eunomia, and 45 Eugenia. The observations were made during the Far Infrared Sky Survey Experiment (FIRSSE) with a super-fluid helium-cooled telescope flown to exospheric altitudes aboard a sounding rocket. The 20- and 27-μm fluxes are consistent with published 10- and 20-μm photometry. However, the 85-μm fluxes are a factor of 2 to 3 lower than a Planck law extrapolation of the shorter wavelength fluxes. If the thermal radiation from asteroids at these wavelenghts is adequately described by graybody emission, as is expected on the basis of models of asteroid radiation discussed in the literature, then the value of emissivity in the 85-μm bandpass is likely to be substantially lower than the 10- to 20-μm value. The decrease in emissivity between 20 and 85 μm suggested for these asteroids is in qualitative agreement with studies, both observational and theoretical, of emissivity of a lunar-type regolith. Fluxes measured at 20 and/or 27 μm are also reported for an additional 16 asteroids.  相似文献

Cosmic ray exposure ages of lunar samples have been used to date surface features related to impact cratering and downslope movement of material. Only when multiple samples related to a feature have the same rare gas exposure age, or when a single sample has the same81Kr-Kr and track exposure age can a feature be considered reliably dated. Because any single lunar sample is likely to have had a complex exposure history, assignment of ages to features based upon only one determination by any method should be avoided. Based on the above criteria, there are only five well-dated lunar features: Cone Crater (Apollo 14) 26 m.y., North Ray Crater (Apollo 16) 50 m.y., South Ray Crater (Apollo 16) 2 m.y., the emplacement of the Station 6 boulders (Apollo 17) 22 m.y., and the emplacement of the Station 7 boulder (Apollo 17) 28 m.y. Other features are tentatively dated or have limits set on their ages: Bench Crater (Apollo 12) ?99 m.y., Baby Ray Crater (Apollo 16) ?2 m.y., Shorty Crater (Apollo 17) ≈ 30 m.y., Camelot Crater (Apollo 17) ?140 m.y., the emplacement of the Station 2 boulder 1 (Apollo 17) 45–55 m.y., and the slide which generated the light mantle (Apollo 17) ?50 m.y.  相似文献
