The hierarchical substructure of the core of the Perseus cluster of galaxies (A426, A262, A347, N507, and N383) is investigated using the method of S-tree diagrams. In the main system M (100 galaxies), two substructures AM (35 galaxies) and BM (13 galaxies) are determined. The group AM can be identified with the cluster A262 and the group N507; BM can be identified with the group N383; A426 and A347 are in the main system. The axis of symmetry of the system M passes through the Seyfert galaxy N1275 and is parallel to the axis of symmetry of the group AM, which is the core of increased density of the cluster of galaxies. Radial segregation of galaxies by morphological types is observed in the systems M and AM. The distribution of galaxies by position angles is uniform. The results are here presented of an analysis of the subclustering in a sample of galaxy clusters from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS), along with complementary data from other studies. The analysis is performed by using the S-tree method, enabling us to study the hierarchical properties of clusters by the detection of the main physical cluster and of its subgroups. The results indicate (a) systematically lower genuine cluster velocity dispersions than were known from previous studies, and (b) the existence of 2–3 subgroups in each cluster. As a result of certain properties of a new class of dynamical entities, we denote these subgroups as galaxy associations ; these may become an essential challenge for the formation mechanisms of galaxy clusters.  相似文献

We give a constructive proof of the existence of elliptic lower dimensional tori in nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems. In particular we adapt the classical Kolmogorov normalization algorithm to the case of planetary systems, for which elliptic tori may be used as replacements of elliptic Keplerian orbits in Lagrange-Laplace theory. With this paper we support with rigorous convergence estimates the semi-analytic work in our previous article (Sansottera et al., Celest Mech Dyn Astron 111:337–361, 2011), where an explicit calculation of an invariant torus for a planar model of the Sun-Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus system has been made. With respect to previous works on the same subject we exploit the characteristic of Lie series giving a precise control of all terms generated by our algorithm. This allows us to slightly relax the non-resonance conditions on the frequencies.  相似文献

We present the first results of a new technique to detect, locate, and characterize young dissolving star clusters. Using Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys archival images of the nearby galaxy IC2574, we performed stellar PSF photometry and selected the most massive stars as our first test sample. We used a group-finding algorithm on the selected massive stars to find cluster candidates. We then plot the color-magnitude diagrams for each group, and use stellar evolutionary models to estimate their age. So far, we found 79 groups with ages of up to about 100 Myr, displaying various sizes and densities.  相似文献

Analysis of ultraviolet (UV) observations with the FAUST shuttle-borne telescope toward the Antennae and NGC 6752 celestial regions resulted in the detection of 46 and 221 candidate sources respectively, for a signal-to-noise ratio of 8. We discuss the source detection process and the identification of UV sources with optical counterparts. Using correlations with existing catalogues, we present reliable identifications for approximately 60 per cent of the sources. We find that most identified objects are B, A and F stars. The remaining identified objects are galaxies, a white dwarf in a binary system, and two K-type stars. Nearly all of the remaining unidentified objects have assigned optical counterparts but, lacking additional information, we give these only as best estimates. With help from new diagnostic diagrams, we suggest that these unclassified objects are main-sequence (or giant) stars within the local spiral arm or halo; or other hot evolved objects within the local spiral arm. We discuss the nature of the objects found and compare our results with those predicted from spectral and Galactic models.  相似文献

We consider the problem of the relative motion both of the substructures of the Local Group of galaxies (revealed via the S-tree method), and of the velocity of the Local Group itself. The existence of statistically significant bulk flow of the Milky Way subsystem is shown via a 3D reconstruction procedure, which uses information on the radial velocities of the galaxies but does not take account of their distances. Once the bulk motion of the substructures is estimated we also consider, in combination with the observed cosmic microwave background (CMB) dipole, the mean velocity of the Local Group itself. Assigning to the Local Group the mean motion of its main substructures, we evaluate its peculiar velocity in Milky Way frame V LG→MW = (−7 ± 303, −15 ± 155, +177 ± 144) or 178 km s−1 toward galactic coordinates l  = 245 and b  = +85. Combined with the CMB dipole V MW→CMB, we obtain a Local Group velocity in CMB frame: V LG→CMB = (−41 ± 303, −497 ± 155, 445 ± 144) or 668 km s−1 towards l  = 265 and b  = 42. This estimation is in good agreement, within the 1 σ level, with the estimation of Yahil et al.  相似文献

The Hamiltonian representing the average over the mean-motion angles (i.e. the secular part) of the three-body planetary problem is considered. An efficient algorithm constructing invariant tori for the trajectories in phase space is provided. To give a possible practical application, we consider a toy-model including the main terms of the secular part of a hypothetic Sun-Jupiter-Saturn system having eccentricities and inclinations equal to 1/20 of the true ones. The scheme of a KAM proof of the stability of the model is sketched. The proof is “computer assisted”.  相似文献

We explore the predictions of the standard hierarchical clustering scenario of galaxy formation, regarding the numbers and metallicities of PopIII stars that are likely to be found within our Galaxy today. By PopIII we refer to stars formed at large redshift ( z >4), with low metallicities ([ Z /Z]<−2.5) and in small systems (total mass ≲ 2×108 M) that are extremely sensitive to stellar feedback, and which through a prescribed merging history end up becoming part of the Milky Way today. An analytic, extended Press–Schechter formalism is used to obtain the mass functions of haloes which will host PopIII stars at a given redshift, and which will end up in Milky Way sized systems today. Each of these is modelled as a mini-galaxy, with a detailed treatment of the dark halo structure, angular momentum distribution, final gas temperature and disc instabilities, all of which determine the fraction of the baryons that are subject to star formation. The use of new primordial metallicity stellar evolutionary models allows us to trace the history of the stars formed, and give accurate estimates of their expected numbers today and their location in L /L versus T /K Hertzsprung–Russell (HR) diagrams. A first comparison with observational data suggests that the initial mass function (IMF) of the first stars was increasingly high-mass weighted towards high redshifts, levelling off at z ≳9 at a characteristic stellar mass scale m s=10–15 M.  相似文献

We run numerical simulations of the disruption of satellite galaxies in a Galactic potential to build up the entire stellar halo, in order to investigate what the next generation of astrometric satellites will reveal by observing the halo of the Milky Way. We generate artificial DIVA , FAME and GAIA halo catalogues, in which we look for the signatures left by the accreted satellites. We develop a method based on the standard Friends-of-Friends algorithm applied to the space of integrals of motion. We find this simple method can recover about 50 per cent of the different accretion events, when the observational uncertainties expected for GAIA are taken into account, even when the exact form of the Galactic potential is unknown. The recovery rate for DIVA and FAME is much smaller, but these missions, like GAIA , should be able to test the hierarchical formation paradigm on our Galaxy by measuring the amount of halo substructure in the form of nearby kinematically cold streams with, for example, a two-point correlation function in velocity space.  相似文献

On the base of a photographic plate in system V, which was taken with the 134/200/400 cm Schmidt camera of the Karl-Schwarzschild-Observatorium Tautenburg maximal diameters of galaxies in the centre of the Coma cluster are determined by photographic equidensitometry. An other system of diameters is determined for medium densities of the objects. The results are compared with ROOD and BAUM'S who derived the diameters by visual measurements on plates taken with the 5-metre telescope of the Hale Observatories. Both statistics contain galaxies up to 19m. They are complete up to 17m.5. It is pointed out that the Tautenburg diameters are in the mean 3 times larger than those derived by ROOD and BAUM. Diameter-magnitude diagrams and ellipticities of the objects are derived, further photometric corrections for tilted objects. For describing the general structure of the cluster diameter functions are derived instead of magnitude functions. The accuracy of a brightness determination by the equidensity method from the diameter-magnitude diagrams is nearly twice better than according to ROOD and BAUM.  相似文献

A magnetic-binary system is completely determined by means of eight parameters. Their variation affects directly the qualitative characteristics of the system. In this paper we investigate numerically the parametric dependence of the collinear equilibria in the equatorial magnetic-binary problem. Their stability is also examined employing the classical method of the characteristic roots associated with each equilibrium point. The whole research is documented by diagrams and tables containing the obtained results.  相似文献

Three eclipsing binary systems with astrometric orbit have been studied. For a detailed analysis two circular‐orbit binaries (VW Cep and HT Vir) and one binary with an eccentric orbit (ζ Phe) have been chosen. Merging together astrometry and the analysis of the times of minima, one is able to describe the orbit of such a system completely. The O C diagrams and the astrometric orbits of the third bodies were analysed simultaneously for these three systems by the least‐squares method. The introduced algorithm is useful and powerful, but also time consuming, due to many parameters which one is trying to derive. The new orbits for the third bodies in these systems were found with periods 30, 221, and 261 yr, and eccentricities 0.63, 0.37, and 0.64 for VWCep, ζ Phe, and HT Vir, respectively. Also an independent approach to compute the distances to these systems was used. The use of this algorithm to VW Cep gave the distance d = (27.90 ± 0.29) pc, which is in excellent agreement with the previous Hipparcos result. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Several papers in the last decade have studied the Caledonian symmetric four-body problem (CSFBP), a restricted four-body system with a symmetrically reduced phase space. During these studies, difficulties have arisen when the system approaches a close encounter. These are due to collision singularities causing numerical integration algorithms to fail. In this paper, we give the full details of a regularisation approach that now enables us to study these close encounters and collision events. The resulting equations of motion can be efficiently integrated by a high-order integrator. The results from numerical testing of the algorithm verify that the regularisation is advantageous in preserving numerical stability. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated for a range of CSFBP orbits. Numerical experiments show that the newly developed regularisation algorithm has excellent energy conservation properties.  相似文献

We present a new Monte Carlo algorithm to generate merger trees describing the formation history of dark matter haloes. The algorithm is a modification of the algorithm of Cole et al. used in the galform semi-analytic galaxy formation model. As such, it is based on the Extended Press–Schechter theory and so should be applicable to hierarchical models with a wide range of power spectra and cosmological models. It is tuned to be in accurate agreement with the conditional mass functions found in the analysis of merger trees extracted from the Λ cold dark matter Millennium N -body simulation. We present a comparison of its predictions not only with these conditional mass functions, but also with additional statistics of the Millennium Simulation halo merger histories. In all cases, we find it to be in good agreement with the Millennium Simulation and thus it should prove to be a very useful tool for semi-analytic models of galaxy formation and for modelling hierarchical structure formation in general. Results of families of periodic orbits in the elliptic restricted problem are shown. They are calculated for the mass ratios =0.5 and =0.1 for the primary bodies and for different values of the eccentricity of the orbit of the primaries which is the second parameter. The case =0.5 is also a good model for planetary orbits in binaries. Finally we show detailed stability diagrams and give results according to the stability classification of Contopoulos.  相似文献

We separate the tidal evolution of a planet-satellite system with zero eccentricity in two phases:phase 1—from the formation of the system to satellite's corotation (satellite's corotation means that its spin angular velocity equals the orbital angular velocity);phase 2—after satellite's corotation.We study the planet-satellite system during phase 1 with Darwin's graphical method and obtain an upper limit to satellite'sQ which discloses whether or not it is corotating. Moreover we obtain some qualitative information about the future evolution of the corotating satellites.The present work does not give any new result for the Earth-Moon case and for the Neptune-Triton case.  相似文献

We revisit a set of symplectic variables introduced by Andre Deprit (Celest Mech 30, 181–195, 1983), which allows for a complete symplectic reduction in rotation invariant Hamiltonian systems, generalizing to arbitrary dimension Jacobi’s reduction of the nodes. In particular, we introduce an action-angle version of Deprit’s variables, connected to the Delaunay variables, and give a new hierarchical proof of the symplectic character of Deprit’s variables.  相似文献

Broad-band V and I photometry of the short-period W UMa-type contact binaries V523 Cas and TY UMa are reported. From the light curves, the system parameters have been determined and evidence is presented for extensive spot activity in both systems, with V523 Cas being the more active system. A compilation of all the available photoelectric and CCD-based timings of eclipse minima is made; the O–C diagrams show evidence for an increasing period in the case of V523 Cas and a decreasing period in TY UMa. In addition we derive a more accurate astrometric position for V523 Cas from our CCD images.  相似文献

In the three dipole problem we assume each one of the magnetic dipoles to be located on one member of a three celestial bodies system moving in circles according to the equilaterial solution of Lagrange. Using the method of characteristic exponents we study here for first time the stability of planar and three dimensional equilibrium points of charged particles moving under the electromagnetic force of the system. Applying this theoretical procedure we give an extensive numerical investigation for the stability of the equilibria for a lot combinations of the values of the parameters of the electromagnetic field.  相似文献
