The degree of preferred orientation of clay minerals in a series of fifteen fine-grained sediments has been precisely measured by transmitted X-ray goniometry. This varies systematically with quartz content. By contrast it is apparently unrelated to fissility since the one fissile sample (a ‘paper shale’) occurs at the mid-point of the sample series ranked in order of degree of preferred orientation. In this series fissility corresponds with the presence of fine-scale lamination. Estimates of compaction strain using the theory of March (1932) and assuming random initial clay orientation are consistent with the view that these samples started life with porosities similar to those of present-day muddy sediments. On this basis it is concluded that preferred orientation in clay-rich sediments results almost entirely from compaction strain. The degree to which this can be attained is limited by the presence of nonplaty particles (such as quartz grains) which prevent planar fabric development in their immediate vicinity.  相似文献

The Tees Laminated Clay forms a continuous deposit around the Tees estuary in north east England and was deposited in a proglacial lake which occupied the Teesside area during late Devensian times, disappearing about 13 000 years ago. It overlies till, with which it has a sharp contact and reaches a maximum thickness in parts of central Middlesbrough of just over 9 m. The laminations consist of alternating thin layers of clay and silt, and represent seasonal increments of sediment. Kaolinite and illite, with lesser amounts of chlorite, dominate the mineral composition. Quartz tends to account for less than 35%. The notable carbonate content may be diagenetic in origin. The birefringence ratio of the clay minerals indicates a medium degree of particle orientation which suggests a partially flocculated fabric.This laminated clay has a high plasticity. However, the liquid and plastic limits of the silty layers differ significantly from those of the clay layers or the bulk samples. The clay fraction has a greater influence on these limits than the silty fraction. In addition, the linear shrinkage, liquidity indices and consistency indices of the silty layers differ appreciably from those of the clay layers and the bulk samples. The laminated clay is inactive. The orientation of the laminations in relation to the direction of maximum principal stress influences the shear strength, the lowest strengths being developed when these orientations are between 30° and 60°. The stress paths, anisotropic ratios and values of Af indicate that the Tees Laminated Clay is normally consolidated or lightly overconsolidated. The McLamore–Gray concept possibly can be applied to the anisotropic strength behaviour.Tees Laminated Clay can give rise to problems during construction operations since it can lose strength significantly on remoulding. Accordingly, these soils were treated with cementitious materials to determine the extent to which their engineering behaviour was enhanced by the addition of such materials. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998  相似文献

Quantitative appraisal of compaction strain is essential for the study of the burial history of shales in sedimentary basins. The results of a preliminary fabric analysis of Westphalian and Zechstein shales in the Campine Basin (Belgium) show that clay fabric analysis, using an X-ray pole figure goniometer, is suitable for this purpose. Clay fabrics, in the range studied, are independent of depth and therefore cannot be used as depth indicators. This suggests that in the early stages of the burial history a stable clay fabric has to develop, which will basically remain unchanged during the subsequent burial history. The degree of clay particle preferred orientation not only reflects the compaction strain, but is also determined by mineralogical parameters: the presence of non-platy particles and the relative concentrations of the different clay minerals. This degree of preferred orientation furthermore determines the degree of fissility of the shales. These mineralogical factors limit the use of clay fabrics as truly quantitative strain markers. Their use as semi-quantitative strain markers remains advantageous, mainly because of the common occurrence of clay fabrics in the geological record. Moreover, the relative ease of measurement and the possibility of distinguishing compaction from tectonic strains favour the use of clay fabrics in the quantitative strain analysis of argillaceous rocks.  相似文献

Fissility in shales appears directly related to the parallel orientation of mineral grains in the rock fabric. In two shale sequences examined, fissility increases along a gradient of decreasing bioturbation. Normal marine mudrocks should be characterized by lack of fissility due to the randomized fabric produced by bioturbation, while azoic marine mudrocks should exhibit good fissility due to the lack of biogenic reworking and the preservation of an originally horizontal particle arrangement.  相似文献

Extensive occurrences of Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous aeolian sandstones form part of a thick sequence of terrigenous red beds in northern Chile. These sediments accumulated in a N-S-elongated intermontane back-arc basin on the landward side of an active volcanic chain. This volcanic chain, which was produced by subduction beneath the continental margin, provided the source of almost all the clastic sediments. The aeolian sands formed isolated dune fields covering only part of the depositional basin at any one time. Cosets of cross-bedded sandstone up to 40 m thick represent the deposits of linear draas. Cross-bedded sets, which average between 0.5 and 1 m in thickness, were produced by the migration of small dunes down and along the gentle lee slopes of the draas. The majority of foreset laminations in the cross-bedded sets are thin, parallel and persistent. They are the product of the lateral migration of dunes which developed oblique to the prevailing winds. Foreset laminations dip at low angles (averaging 19°), well below the angle of repose of dry sand. Most of the laminations originated by tractional processes, rather than by grainflow (avalanching) or grainfall. This conclusion indicates that the dunes were gently undulating with no slip faces. The orientation of the direction of maximum dip of foreset laminations does not provide a reliable indicator of the palaeowind direction. Although individual sets or cosets commonly show a unidirectional pattern, significant variations have been recorded between sets of the same age at nearby locations and vertically between one coset and the next. Variations in vertical sections were produced by the superimposition of draas with different orientations.  相似文献

Weakly deformed mudstone and siltstone (Middle Ordovician Knobs Formation) of the Appalachian Valley and Ridge Province, south-western Virginia, U.S.A. show strain-dependent transitions between bedding fissility, pencil structure and cleavage. Pencil structures are associated with a bulk inhomogeneous shortening deformation where minimum principal strain (Z) ranges between 9 and 26% shortening (assuming a plane strain and constant volume). Where strains are less, bedding fissility dominates. Pencil fragments are defined by intersecting fracture sets subparallel to the pre-existing bedding fissility and cleavage. Their long axes are both parallel to the bedding-cleavage intersection and to the inferred Y axis of the tectonic strain ellipsoid. Pencil development is considered to result from fracturing along both fabric anisotropies during weathering and post-tectonic stress relaxation. Pencils show variations in size and shape depending on lithology (grain size and composition), degree of initial clay preferred orientation, degree of cleavage development, type of cleavage, total bulk strain and degree of strain homogeneity. Their shape (l/w) however is a direct measure of total Y/Z strain since strain determinations from chlorite pressure-fringes on framboidal pyrite within the pencil fragments give
(YZ) = 0.913 + 0.019 (l/w)
. Pencil structure is therefore a potential strain marker in weakly deformed rocks.  相似文献

On the basis of observation of thin sections and 137Cs data, laminations in sediment are interpreted to be varves in Bolterskardet Lake (78°06' N, 16°01' E), Svalbard, the Arctic. Varves appear under a petrologic microscope as couplets of dark-silt and light-clay layers. The mechanism of varve formation is surmized as follows: each silt layer is the production of sediment inflow interpreted as mainly derived from snowmelt during summer; each clay layer was deposited in a stillwater environment during an ice-cover period. A light -clay layer provides an important index bed to identify the annual interface. The high accumulation rates, long period of ice cover, and topographically closed basin are probably all critical factors in forming and preserving varves. Varve thickness is known to be controlled mainly by summer temperature. The variation of varve thickness in Lake Bolterskardet can then be used to reconstruct summer temperature. The varve series show that there has been distinct decade-scale variability of summer temperature over the past 150 years. Warm periods occurred in the 1860s, around 1900, the 1930s, 1950s, and 1970s, and in the last 20 years. The varved sediments of Lake Bolterskarde preserve an ideal record for high-resolution paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental research in this data-sparse area.  相似文献

Microstructural analysis of glacial deposits has recently been used as a research tool to determine sediment genesis. However, the occurrence of microstructures in deposits of known origin has not been sufficiently documented, hindering our ability to confidently interpret microstructures in sediments of unknown origin. Our objective is to present a calibration study of microstructures of recent sediment flow deposits and associated sediments from the Matanuska Glacier, Alaska, and to evaluate the degree of commonality with microstructures found in subglacially deformed sediments. Microstructures in sediment flow deposits can be formed as a result of sediment transport, deposition, and/or post-depositional processes, and are related to the viscosity regime of the source flow. Characteristic microstructures formed during brittle deformation include shears, faults, and brecciation; microstructures formed during ductile deformation include folds, pressure shadows, re-orientation of clasts around a 'core' stone, fine laminations, basal shear zones, imbrication, and flow fabrics. Other microstructures include fluid escape and injection structures, clast haloes, and fissility. The results of our comparison suggest that sediment flow deposits share many microstructures in common with subglacially deformed sediments.  相似文献

The basal unit of this flysch sequence consists of about 700 m of rhythmically interlayered red and green claystone intercalated with feldspathic sandstone and lithic conglomerate. Chemical analyses show that both types of claystones have approximately the same Fe2O3 content (8%). The presence within green claystone of inarticulate brachiopods, thin laminations of phosphate and pyrite, coupled with a high Mn content (Fe/Mn : 27) together with the composition of the chlorites, suggest that green mud was deposited slowly in a marine environment under reducing conditions. The hematite content of red claystone averages 4%. The Fe/Mn is high (71), and the clay fraction contains chamosite in addition to chlorite and illite. These characteristics favour a paralic oxidizing environment for the red muds. Rapid resedimentation of red sediment from a paralic environment into the green lithotope, rather than a lateral variation of facies, is suggested by: (1) the distribution of the two hemirhythms in the stratigraphic column, (2) the presence in the red hemirhythm of large slump structures, contorted laminations, and pebbly claystone, and (3) by the internal sedimentary structures of the coarse fraction.  相似文献

Nanometre-scale transmission electron microscope imagery of manganiferous rock varnishes from Death Valley, California, Peru, Antarctica, and Hawaii confirms prior infrared mineralogy studies. The building blocks of rock varnish are clay minerals that are cemented to the rock by oxyhydroxides of manganese and iron. Rock varnish is layered on the scale of nanometres, with the basic structure defined by the subparallel alignment of detrital clay minerals. Although only a few examples of bacteria were found, possible cell-wall encrustations are ubiquitous and aligned with the clay minerals. Mn–Fe oxides appear to be mobilized from bacterial casts and then reprecipitate on clay minerals that weather into monolayers. These observations have implications for varnish dating and palaeoenvironmental techniques: K–Ar and uranium-series dating of rock-varnish oxides can only yield minimum ages; however, this small spatial scale of mobilization would not alter the signal from micron-scale microchemical laminations.  相似文献

Data from an outcropping laminated interval were collected and analyzed to test the applicability of a theoretical model describing instability of layered systems. Rayleigh—Taylor wave perturbations result at the interface between fluids of contrasting density, viscosity, and thickness. In the special case where reverse density and viscosity interlaminations are developed, the deformation response produces a single wave with predictable amplitudes, wavelengths, and amplification rates.Physical measurements from both the outcropping section and modern sediments suggest the usefulness of the model for the interpretation of convolute laminations. Internal characteristics of the stratigraphic interval, and the developmental sequence of convoluted beds, are used to document the developmental history of these structures.  相似文献

甘肃灵台县任家坡黄土-红粘土剖面的磁性地层学研究表明;中国北方连续的风成堆积可下推到705MdB.P。第三纪红粘土的粒度组成从上到下变化很小,与黄土-古土壤序列的粒度大幅度变化形成强烈的反差,意味着晚第三纪时期的气候总体上要比第四纪时期稳定。在705~2.6MaB.P.的红粘土沉积中,可分出的110~115个土壤B层与钙质结核层的组合,初步表明在这个时期有约110~115次气候旋回。  相似文献

对黄土高原具有代表意义四个剖面的晚第三纪红粘土样品进行了粒度分析,并将结果与典型风成黄土古土壤样品的粒度特征进行详细对比,得到红粘土是风成成因的沉积学证据。结果表明,黄土高原红粘土与其上覆第四纪古土壤形成环境相似,红粘土是在相对于黄土堆积搬运风动力变幅小的条件下沉积的,在沉积之后受到较强的风化成壤改造作用。  相似文献

Many modern sand deposits resulting from episodic floods in semi-arid zones are dominated by parallel laminations, but parallel-laminated sands are not a major feature in perennial streams. Single flood events may deposit over 1.5 m of parallel-laminated sand. Hence, ancient parallel-laminated, sand-dominated alluvial deposits may be the product of ephemeral flows.The Trentishoe Formation (Hangman Sandstone Group — Middle Devonian) of North Devon consists, in part, of laterally extensive beds of parallel-laminated, fine-grained red sandstones that build multistorey sand bodies. Individual beds are little more than 1 m thick, but may extend laterally for hundreds of metres. A vertical sequence of erosion surface, sparse silt clasts, parallel laminations, silt drape, is often found, suggesting high flow stage deposition of plane-bedded sand, followed by a very rapid waning of flow with silt fallout in the final stages of the flood. This sequence bears marked similarity to certain modern ephemeral flow sands.  相似文献

本文对甘肃泾川的一套325m厚的黄土-红粘土序列进行了沉积学和磁性地层学研 究。泾川剖面红粘土序列的粘度特征表明,其与上覆黄土一样同为风成成因。古地磁测量结果确定该剖面的底界年龄约为8.0MaB.P.。根据野外观察,可以将泾川剖面红粘土序列从顶到底划分为6套地层。与泾川剖面相比,灵台红粘土序列保存了上部的5套地层。泾川和灵台两个红粘土剖面的地层对比表明,中国北方晚中新世以来的红粘土沉积是基本连续的。  相似文献

Geologic evidence in the closed Seistan Basin of southwestern Afghanistan and adjacent parts of Iran and Pakistan indicates that a lake as much as 65,000 sq km in size occupied this closed depression during Pleistocene time. The deposits consist mostly of lacustrine silt and clay and have a maximum observed thickness of about 250 m. A layer of alluvial gravels overlies the sequence. The deposits are probably early or middle Pleistocene in age; they are old enough to have sustained nearly 300 m of erosion over large areas but are not faulted or detectably folded in the central part of the basin although they are upwarped along the west edge of the basin.Sand dunes cover extensive areas of the basin. Dune orientation shows that the strong surface winds enter the basin blowing toward the south-southeast and then are deflected to the east, apparently as a response to mountains bordering the basin on its south side. The Gawdezereh, a large deflation depression, may be a result of an augmented excavation ability of winds that oc urs where turbulence is created along a zone of deflection.  相似文献

Two cores from a NE Atlantic pelagic clay area of low accumulation rate each contain a single turbidite with different age, thickness and composition. Diagenesis following introduction of exotic turbidite material into the pelagic clay sequence has resulted in distinctive colour changes. The diagenetic process is thought to be driven by bacterially-mediated organic oxidation, and compositional differences in the turbidites and clays allow examination of the effects on metal concentrations of this process.In one core, a long turbidite section emplaced 330,000 years ago is overlain by clay. Organic oxidation has apparently proceeded from the turbidite top downwards and has maintained a U concentration peak below the oxidation front marked by a colour change. The U source is believed to be U initially associated with the organic matter in the oxidised section of the turbidite. Vanadium and Cu behave similarly, but upward migration of the redox-sensitive metals Mn and Ni is also seen. In the second core an 8 cm turbidite section was emplaced about 170,000 years ago in a clay column. In this case organic consumption now appears complete, but evidence for diagenetic effects is found in a 16 cm compositional alteration ‘halo’ of the underlying pelagic clay. Fe(II) has been enriched and the hydrogenous component of Mn, Co, Ni and Cu removed from the pelagic clay to form the halo.  相似文献

The present paper deals with the impact of shear deformation on the geometric arrangement of particles within the soil specimen, which is termed as the microfabric of soil. A series of compression and extension lubricated end triaxial tests are performed on cylindrical specimens of Kaolinite clay with two extreme microfabrics; dispersed and flocculated, which are obtained using slurry consolidation technique. Flocculated microfabric has random orientation of particles within the soil mass having face-to-edge particle contacts; however, dispersed microfabric has parallel orientation of particles containing face-to-face particle contacts. When the specimen is subjected to large stress levels during its shear deformation, the particle orientation and the geometric arrangement within the soil specimen gets affected due to the force acting on the clay platelets. The variation in microfabric of soil before and after shear deformation process is evaluated by obtaining X-ray diffraction patterns of the clay specimen at three different locations using standard X-ray diffractometer. The discussion includes an analysis of the orientation of soil particles located at shear banding zones of the clay specimens, which may be useful for understanding the strain localization development in clays.  相似文献

Detailed field observations of normal faults formed at shallow depth in a deltaic sand–clay sequence near Miri, Sarawak are used to study the main structural elements during the early stages of fault development. We studied over 450 segmented faults, many of which contain clay smear, in an excellent outcrop exposing a collapsed crest structure.In agreement with previous studies we find that important elements of fault zone evolution are: (i) clay smear, (ii) telescoping on parallel strands, and (iii) preferred deformation of fault-bounded lenses. We model the consequences of telescoping on parallel strands and conclude that the reliability of juxtaposition diagrams can decrease dramatically in the presence of undetected multiple fault strands. The across fault connectivity can either increase or decrease depending on small variations in many of the input parameters.All the faults studied have a continuous clay smear over the interval studied, except for the places where a sand bed has an offset smaller than its thickness, and therefore has not moved past clay. Although on average the clay content observed correlates well with the average clay content of the faulted section, there are large variations in clay content controlled by local complexity in deformation. Understanding of this local complexity is a prerequisite for further improvement of clay smear in the subsurface.  相似文献
