We present a study on the polarized electric field during the collisionless magnetic reconnection of antiparallel fields using two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The simulations demonstrate clearly that electron holes and electric field with bipolar structure are produced during magnetic reconnection without a guide field. The electric field with bipolar structure can be found near the X-line and on the separatrix and the plasma sheet boundary layer, which is consistent with the observations. These structures will elongate electron’s time staying in the diffusion region. In addition, the electric fields with tripolar structures are also found in our simulation.  相似文献

As the electrical conductivity along the magnetic field in solar atmosphere is large, parallel electric fields have been neglected in most investigations. We will first demonstrate their importance for post-flare loops, and then introduce a model for them which takes into account the effect of parallel electric fields. The electric field calculated from the model is consistent with the electric field observed by Foukal et al. (1983).  相似文献

Concurrent interplanetary magnetic field and 0.7–7.6 MeV proton cosmic-ray anisotropy data obtained from instrumentation on Explorers 34 and 41 are examined for five cosmic-ray events in which we observe a persistent eastern-anisotropy phase late in the event (t ? 4 days). The direction of the anisotropy at such times shows remarkable invariance with respect to the direction of the magnetic field (which generally varies throughout the event) and it is also independent of particle species (electrons and protons) and particle speed over the range 0.06 ? β ? 0.56. The anisotropy is from the direction 38.3° ± 2.4° E of the solar radius vector, and is inferred to be orthogonal to the long term, mean interplanetary field direction. Both the amplitude of the anisotropy and the decay time constant show a strong dependence on the magnetic field azimuth. Detailed comparison of the anisotropy and the magnetic field data shows that the simple model of convection plus diffusion parallel to the magnetic field is applicable for this phase of the flare effect. It is demonstrated that contemporary theories do not predict the invariance of the direction as observed, even when the magnetic field is steady; these theories need extension to take into account the magnetic field direction ψ varying from its mean direction ψ o. It is shown that the late phase anisotropy vector is not expected to be everywhere perpendicular to the mean magnetic field. The suggestion that we are observing kinks in the magnetic field moving radially outwards from the Sun leads to the conclusion that the parallel diffusion coefficient varies as 1/cos2 (ψ ? ψ o). Density gradients in the late decay phase are estimated to be ≈ 700%∣AU for 0.7–7.6 MeV protons. A simple theory reproduces the dependence of the decay time constant on anisotropy; it also leads to a radial density gradient of about 1000%∣AU and diffusion coefficient of 1.3 × 1020 cm2 s?1.  相似文献

In quiet stellar atmospheres that are stabilized, for example, by the presence of strong magnetic fields, a non-uniform distribution of chemical elements (abundance stratification) is predicted by the diffusion theory. Spectroscopic observations of magnetic Ap stars provide a strong support for the diffusion theory. Stratification predictions in the upper atmosphere, in particular, strongly depend on the magnetic field geometry. Optical lines used in stratification analysis of Ap stars do not probe the upper atmospheric layers and, hence, cannot provide reliable information on abundance gradients there. We show the expected effect of stratification on the profiles of strong lines in the UV region and how these lines may be used for constraining diffusion theory.  相似文献

In this paper, we use radar observations from a 50 MHz radar stationed near Salinas, Puerto Rico, to study the variability of specular as well as non-specular meteor trails in the E-region ionosphere. The observations were made from 18:00 to 08:00 h AST over various days in 1998 and 1999 during the Coqui II Campaign [Urbina et al., 2000, Geophys. Rev. Lett. 27, 2853–2856]. The radar system had two sub-arrays, both produced beams pointed to the north in the magnetic meridian plane, perpendicular to the magnetic field, at an elevation angle of approximately 41 degrees. The Coqui II radar is sensitive to at least two types of echoes from meteor trails: (1) Specular reflections from trails oriented perpendicular to the radar beam, and (2) scattering, or, non-specular reflections, from trails deposited with arbitrary orientations. We examine and compare the diurnal and seasonal variability of echoes from specular and non-specular returns observed with the Coqui II radar. We also compare these results with meteor head echo observations made with the Arecibo 430 MHz radar. We use common region observations of these three types of meteor echoes to show that the diurnal and seasonal variability of specular trails, non-specular trails, and head echoes are not equivalent. The implications of these results on global meteor mass flux estimates obtained from specular meteor observations remains to be examined.  相似文献

Without the shielding of a strong intrinsic magnetic field, the martian atmosphere directly interacts with the impacting solar wind. The neutral constituents of the atmospheric corona can be ionized, and then picked up and accelerated by the magnetic field and convection electric field in the solar wind. A significant fraction of pickup ions escape Mars’ gravitational pull and are lost to space. This non-thermal escape process of heavy species is an important mechanism responsible for atmospheric erosion. While there is a perception that the martian magnetic anomalies are significant for the ionospheric density distribution and the bow shock standoff location, little is known about the quantitative influence of the martian crustal magnetic field on the global distribution of escaping pickup ions. In this paper, we apply a newly developed Monte Carlo ion transport model to resolve the crustal field effect on the pickup oxygen ion distribution around Mars. The background magnetic and electric fields, in which test particles are followed, are calculated using an independent three-dimensional multispecies MHD model. The effects of the crustal magnetic field on particle escape are quantified by varying the crustal field orientation in the model setup and comparing the corresponding test particle simulation results. The comparison is made by turning on or off the crustal field or changing the local time of the strongest field from the dayside to the dawnside. It is found that without the protection of the crustal magnetic field, the total amount of atmospheric escape through the tail region would be enhanced by more than a factor of two. It is shown that the crustal magnetic field not only regionally deflects the solar wind around the martian atmosphere, but also has an important global effect on atmospheric erosion and thus on long-term atmospheric evolution.  相似文献

The radiation field, emergent from an inhomogeneous atmosphere, may differ significantly from that calculated using a mean model for such an atmosphere. In the solar case, horizontal anisotropy of the granulation pattern leads to azimuthal dependence of the emergent intensity, and this appears as a latitude-dependent limb flux which may mimic oblateness. We examine this latitude-dependence for several two and three-dimensional models of the inhomogeneous solar atmosphere, with varying degrees of anisotropy in the granulation pattern. Elongation along an east-west axis of about 7% would yield a signal somewhat imperfectly mimicking an excess oblateness of 4 × 10–5. Using the Babcock-Leighton model of the general solar magnetic field we show that some stretching of granules, of this order of magnitude, should be expected. However, it may vary with the solar activity cycle, and in any case the result is very sensitive to the parameters adopted. Even if study of granulation observations should exclude elongations as high as 7%, smaller essentially undetectable elongations may exist. We find that 1 % elongation can account for 25–50 % of a signal corresponding to excess oblateness 4 × 10–5. We conclude that anisotropy of the granulation pattern may influence oblateness determinations; when this is considered together with other effects, much of the claimed oblateness may be eliminated.  相似文献

The diffusion of under-dense radio-meteors has been measured and found to be influenced by the Earth's magnetic field above 95 km. The observed behaviour is shown to be consistent with that expected theoretically. Measured meteor train drifts show no magnetic effect. Results of previous experiments on over-dense meteors also seem to confirm current theoretical models.  相似文献

The technique of electron reflectometry, a method for remote estimation of planetary magnetic fields, is expanded from its original use of mapping crustal magnetic fields at the Moon to achieving the same purpose at Mars, where the presence of a substantial atmosphere complicates matters considerably. The motion of solar wind electrons, incident on the martian atmosphere, is considered in detail, taking account of the following effects: the electrons' helical paths around the magnetic field lines to which they are bound, the magnetic mirror force they experience due to converging field lines in the vicinity of crustal magnetic anomalies, their acceleration/deceleration by electrostatic potentials, their interactions with thermal plasma, their drifts due to magnetic field line curvature and perpendicular electric fields and their scattering off, and loss of energy through a number of different processes to, atmospheric neutrals. A theoretical framework is thus developed for modeling electron pitch angle distributions expected when a spacecraft is on a magnetic field line which is connected to both the martian crust and the interplanetary magnetic field. This framework, along with measured pitch angle distributions from the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Magnetometer/Electron Reflectometer (MAG/ER) experiment, can be used to remotely measure crustal magnetic field magnitudes and atmospheric neutral densities at ∼180 km above the martian datum, as well as estimate average parallel electric fields between 200 and 400 km altitude. Detailed analysis and full results, concerning the crustal magnetic field and upper thermospheric density of Mars, are left to two companion papers.  相似文献

Solar eruptive phenomena, like flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), are governed by magnetic fields. To describe the structure of these phenomena one needs information on the magnetic flux density and the electric current density vector components in three dimensions throughout the atmosphere. However, current spectro-polarimetric measurements typically limit the determination of the vector magnetic field to only the photosphere. Therefore, there is considerable interest in accurate modeling of the solar coronal magnetic field using photospheric vector magnetograms as boundary data. In this work, we model the coronal magnetic field for global solar atmosphere using nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) extrapolation codes implemented to a synoptic maps of photospheric vector magnetic field synthesized from the Vector Spectromagnetograph (VSM) on Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) as boundary condition. Using the resulting three-dimensional magnetic field, we calculate the three-dimensional electric current density and magnetic energy throughout the solar atmosphere for Carrington rotation 2124 using our global extrapolation code. We found that spatially, the low-lying, current-carrying core field demonstrates a strong concentration of free energy in the active-region core, from the photosphere to the lower corona (about 70 Mm). The free energy density appears largely co-spatial with the electric current distribution.  相似文献

We investigate the polar magnetic fields near sunspot minimum using high-resolution videomagnetograph data from Big Bear Solar Observatory. To avoid the problem of center-to-limb variation of the projected longitudinal field, we compare polar with equatorial field strengths for the same limb distance. Polar fields are stronger than the quiet equatorial field, but no greater than equatorial limb data containing unipolar regions. The difference is entirely in the stronger field elements. The polar background fields are of mixed polarity but show a net weak field opposite in sign to that of the stronger polar elements. We believe this to be the first evidence of widespread background field. No dependence of the measured signal on the B-angle was found, so the high-latitude fields do not change strength near the pole. Further, there was no significant change in the polar fields in the 15-month period studied. We tried to derive a high-latitude rotation rate; our data show motion of high-latitude magnetic elements, but the diurnal trajectory is not much bigger than random motions and field changes, so the result is inconclusive. We suggest that the polar fields represent the accumulation of sunspot remnants, the elements of which last for years in the absence of other fields.  相似文献

We show that the pair production rate in a strong magnetic field is substantially altered when an electric field is also included. We illustrate and emphasize this significant alteration by considering a few special cases. In the vicinity of the polar cap of a rotating magnetized neutron star it is currently though thatboth steady electric and magnetic fields must be present. The results presented here then indicate that some considerable degree of caution must be exercised in applying pair production rates calculated under the assumption of zero electric field to the problems of pulsar emission and the generation and maintence of pulsar magnetospheres. In general such rates are very different from the rate computed allowing for the existence of an electric field.  相似文献

A survey of metallic ions detected by the Bennett Ion Mass Spectrometers flown on the Atmosphere Explorer satellites, including both circular and eccentric orbital configurations, shows that patches of these ions of meteoric origin are frequently present during magnetically active periods on the bottomside of the F-layer at middle and high latitudes. In particular the F-region metals statistically tend to appear at night in the vicinity of the main ionospheric trough (in a band of invariant latitudes approx. 10 degrees wide) and on the day side of the polar cap. These distributions were previously associated with the expected dynamics of ions in the F-region above 140 km where meridional neutral wind drag and convection electric fields are the dominant ion transport mechanisms. However, the main meteor deposition layer—the presumed source region of the metals—is located below 100 km where these transport mechanisms do not prevail. It is demonstrated that the Pedersen ion drifts driven by intense electric fields such as those associated with sub-auroral ion drifts (SAID) are sufficient to transport the long-lived metallic ions upward from the main meteor layer to altitudes where the drag of equatorial directed neutral winds and electric field convection can support them against the downward pull of gravity and transport them to other locations. The spatial and temporal distribution of the middle and high latitude F-region metals are consistent with the known characteristics of the electric fields and with the expected F-region ion dynamics.  相似文献

The diffusion of meteor trains is studied numerically using a self-consistent model for the space-charge electric field. Detailed numerical results are presented for a cylindrical column of ionization formed at right angles to the geomagnetic field lines at altitude 102 km and it is shown that the ionization can become elongated in the magnetic field direction. It is also suggested that for a column formed at an angle θ to the magnetic field direction, such a field aligned elongation may be produced for θ> θ c, where θ c is the ‘critical angle’ defined by Kaiser, Pickering and Watkins (1969) (approximately 1 1/2° at 102km altitude). These results are in general agreement with the experimental work of Watkins, Eames and Nicholson (1971).  相似文献

A system of multi-fluid MHD-equations is used to compare adiabatic and non-adiabatic transport of the energetic particles in the magnetospheric plasma sheet. A “slow-flow” approximation is considered to study large-scale transport of the anisotropic plasma consisting of energetic electrons and protons. Non-adiabatic transport of the energetic plasma is caused by scattering of the particles in the presence of both wave turbulence and arbitrary time-varying electric fields penetrating from the solar wind into the magnetosphere. The plasma components are devided into particle populations defined by their given initial effective values of the magnetic moment per particle. The spatial scales are also given to estimate the non-uniformity of the geomagnetic field along the chosen mean path of a particle. The latters are used to integrate approximately the system of MHD-equations along each of these paths. The behaviour of the magnetic moment mentioned above and of the parameter which characterizes the pitch-angle distribution of the particles are studied self-consistently in dependence on the intensity of non-adiabatic scattering of the particles. It is shown that, in the inner magnetosphere, this scattering influences the particles in the same manner as pitch-angle diffusion does. It reduces the pitch-angle anisotropy in the plasa. The state of the plasma may be unstable in the current sheet of the magnetotail. If the initial state of the plasma does not correspond to the equilibrium one, then, in this case, scattering influences the particles so as to remove the plasma further from the equilibrium state. The coefficient of the particle diffusion across the geomagnetic field lines is evaluated. This is done by employing the Langevin approach to take the stochastic electric forces acting on the energetic particles in the turbulent plasma into account. The behaviour of the energy density of electrostatic fluctuations in the magnetosphere is estimated.  相似文献

We formulate the modulation of galactic anisotropy of cosmic rays caused by their orbital deflection in the heliomagnetosphere. According to the formulation, the average sidereal i-th harmonic daily variation (i = 1,2,…) produced from the anisotropy from an arbitrary direction can be expressed by a linear combination of three basic vectors for uni-directional anisotropy and five basic vectors for bi-directional anisotropy. These vectors are obtained by calculating trajectories of cosmic rays (20?104GV) in a model magnetosphere having Parker's Archimedian spiral structure with a flat or a wavy neutral sheet in either of two polarity states, one is called “Positive” state (away field in the northern space of the neutral sheet and toward field in the southern space) and the other is called “Negative” state (reversed state of the above). Among general characteristics of the sidereal daily variations, the most remarkable features are: (1) The observable variations in low rigidity (? 2000 GV) can be produced even from an uni-directional anisotropy in the direction of the Earth's rotation axis. These variations are strongly dependent on the polarity state, i.e., they are greater in the Positive state than in the Negative. (2) Those produced from the anisotropy in the Equatorial plane also show the polarity dependence but contrary to the previous case they are greater in the Negative state than in the Positive. Their magnitude in the former state is not so small even in the extremely low rigidity (~ 100 GV) as compared with that in high rigidity region. (3) These general characteristics are not altered by the introduction of the wavy neutral sheet or the magnetic irregularities, but the variations are affected more or less, depending on the heliolatitudinal extent of the wavy sheet or the degree of cosmic ray scattering with the irregularities, (4) Sidereal daily variation for the wavy sheet shows a toward-away field dependence similar to that of Swinson-type of solar origin, but the dependence is predominant in intermediate rigidity region (~ 500 GV), in marked contrast to that of solar origin. (5) Finally, whichever its direction may be, the uni-directional anisotropy produces the sidereal diurnal variation common to two conjugate stations in the Northern and Southern hemisphere. If there is any difference between the observed variations at the stations, it should be interpreted as being due to higher order anisotropy such as the bi-directional anisotropy.  相似文献

We consider the generation of a magnetic field in the Galaxy by the electric currents excited by cosmic-ray particles in the disk and halo. We assume that the sources of relativistic particles are distributed continuously and uniformly in the Galactic disk, their total power is equal to the observed value, and the particles themselves undergo anisotropic diffusion in a homogeneous medium. We take into account the differential rotation of the Galactic disk but disregard the turbulence gyrotropy (the α effect). The strength of the generated magnetic field in our model is shown to strongly depend on the symmetry of the relativistic proton and thermal electron diffusion tensors, as well as on the relations between the tensor components. In particular, if the diffusion is isotropic, then no magnetic field is generated. For the independent tensor components estimated from observed parameters of the Galactic medium and with a simultaneous allowance made for the turbulent field dissipation processes, the mechanism under consideration can provide an observable magnetic-field strength of the order of several microgauss. This mechanism does not require any seed magnetic field, which leads us to suggest that relativistic particles can give an appreciable and, possibly, determining contribution to the formation of the global Galactic magnetic field. However, a final answer can be obtained only from a nonlinear self-consistent treatment, in which the symmetry and magnitude of the particle diffusion tensor components should be determined together with the calculation of the magnetic field.  相似文献

The equation of momentum balance and magnetic flux conservation are given for a static tail model with an isotropic plasma sheet. The possibility of magnetic field leakage into the solar wind and across the neutral sheet is allowed. Numerical integrations for a wide variety of adjustable model parameters are presented that give the dependence on distance from Earth of all tail parameters (field strength inside and outside of the plasma sheet, plasma pressure, plasma sheet area, tail radius, and normal field component to the neutral sheet). The model gives good agreement with the observed distance dependence of the tail field strength, and accounts for the scatter in the data in terms of a mixture of the fields inside and outside the plasma sheet in the data averages. However, compared with the present interpretations of the observations the model gives a too large plasma pressure at large distances and a too small normal component to the neutral sheet. The discrepancies imply that plasma flow and/or pressure anisotropy are required for an adequate model.  相似文献

We investigate the expected performance of a wide-angle camera in Martian orbit, which, unlike previous cameras that have flown to Mars, is capable of recording meteor activity in that planet's atmosphere. We show that, based on our current understanding of meteor physics and the interplanetary meteoroid population, several meteors will be detected by this instrument during a single nightside pass on a low Martian orbit. The instrument will also record the signatures of meteor showers expected to occur every Martian year (1.88 Earth years). The results of this investigation will test models of the flux of “large” (mm-cm) meteoroids at the orbit of Mars and their interaction with the Martian atmosphere.  相似文献
