Degeneracy effects for bosons are more important for smaller particle mass, smaller temperature and higher number density. Bose condensation requires that particles be in the same lowest energy quantum state. We propose a cosmic background Bose condensation, present everywhere, with its particles having the lowest quantum energy state, ?c/λ, with λ about the size of the visible universe, and therefore unlocalized. This we identify with the quantum of the self gravitational potential energy of any particle, and with the bit of information of minimum energy. The entropy of the universe (~10122 bits) has the highest number density (~1036 bits/cm3) of particles inside the visible universe, the smallest mass, ~10?66 g, and the smallest temperature, ~10?29 K. Therefore it is the best candidate for a Cosmic Background Bose Condensation (CBBC), a completely calmed fluid, with no viscosity, in a superfluidity state, and possibly responsible for the expansion of the universe.  相似文献

We examine the possibility that recent data on cosmic ray anisotropies presented by the AGASA group may lead to the conclusion that our Galactic Center is a major source of the highest energy cosmic rays in our galaxy. We discuss how such a source would contribute to the magnitude and directional properties of the observed flux when measured against a background of extragalactic cosmic rays. We do this using the results of previous propagation calculations and our own more recent calculations which are specifically for a Galactic Center source. We find that the AGASA data can indeed be plausibly interpreted in this way and also that an argument can be made that the Galactic Center has the appropriate physical properties for acceleration to energies of the order of 1018 eV. We show that data from the SUGAR array are compatible with the AGASA result.  相似文献

A simple model of cosmic ray propagation is proposed from which the major experimental results can be derived: The model reproduces the observed nuclear abundances and accounts for the observed changes of nuclear composition with energy, the high degree of isotropy of cosmic ray flux at all energies, and the high degree of its constancy throughout the history of the Solar System. It is consistent with the observed size distribution of extensive airshowers, the intensity and energy distribution of the electron component, and the diffuse emission of γ-rays and radio waves. The model is characterized by the two basic assumptions: (1) that cosmic rays have been injected at an unchanging rate by sources located in the galactic spiral arms and (2) that a large-scale magnetic field retains all particles in our galaxy, where they interact with interstellar gas, so that all complex nuclei are finally fragmented and their energy dissipated in meson production and electro-magnetic interactions.  相似文献

Supernova Remnants (SNRs) are the most likely sources of the galactic cosmic rays up to energies of about 1015 eV/nuc. The large scale shock waves of SNRs are almost ideal sites to accelerate particles up to these highly non-thermal energies by a first order Fermi mechanism which operates through scattering of the particles at magnetic irregularities. In order to get an estimate on the total amount of the explosion energy E SNconverted into high energy particles the evolution of a SNR has to be followed up to the final merging with the interstellar medium. This can only be done by numerical simulations since the non-linear modifications of the shock wave due to particle acceleration as well as radiative cooling processes at later SNR stages have to be considered in such investigations. Based on a large sample of numerical evolution calculations performed for different ambient densities n ext, SN explosion energies, magnetic fields etc. we discuss the final ‘yields’ of cosmic rays at the final SNR stage where the Mach number of the shock waves drops below 2. At these times the cosmic rays start to diffuse out of the remnant. In the range of external densities of10-2n ext/[cm-3] ≤ 30 we find a the total acceleration efficiency of about 0.15 E SN with an increase up to 0.24 E SN at maximum for an external density of n ext = 10 cm-3. Since for the larger ambient densities radiative cooling can reduce significantly the total thermal energy content of the remnant dissipation of Alfvén waves can provide an important heating mechanism for the gas at these later stages. From the collisions of the cosmic rays with the thermal plasma neutral pions are generated which decay subsequently into observable γ-rays above 100 MeV. Hence, we calculate these γ-ray luminosities of SNRs and compare them with current upper limits of ground based γ-raytelescopes. The development of dense shells due to cooling of the thermal plasma increases the γ-ray luminosities and e.g. an external density of n ext = 10 cm-3 with E SN = 1051 erg can lead to a γ-ray flux above 10-6 ph cm-2 s-1 for a remnant located at a distance of 1 kpc. A supernova remnant accelerates cosmic rays to energies somewhat above 105 GeV by the time that the free expansion phase of its evolution has come to an end. As the remnant's outer shock slows, these highest energy cosmic rays diffuse away from the shock along a magnetic flux tube with a radius comparable to that of the remnant at the end of its free expansion phase and which eventually (over a distance of the order of a kiloparsec) bends into the Galactic halo. A similarity solution exists for the temporal and spatial variations, in such a tube, of both the number density for these ~ 105 GeV cosmic rays and the energy density of the waves on which they resonantly scatter. Wave-wave interactions probably do not dominate the evolution of the energy density of these lowest frequency waves, but we assume that they do establish a Kraichnan wave spectrum at higher wavenumber. Although we cannot rigorously justify this assumption, it does receive some support from the analysis of pulsar signals. There is a large body of observations to which such a model can be applied, yielding constraints that must be met. With the model that we develop here we obtain the following results:
  1. The local intensity of ~ 105 GeV cosmic rays implies that the flux tube which currently surrounds the Solar System last contained a remnant in the free expansion phase several times 107 years ago. We comment on the rough agreement between this age and that inferred from Be10 data.
  2. The theoretical value of the cosmic ray diffusion coefficient at ~ 1 GeV in the tube corresponding to that time is in harmony with the value of the diffusion coefficient inferred from cosmic ray composition and synchrotron measurements.
In the light of our inhomogeneous cosmic ray acceleration/propagation model we re-examine our earlier work on the evidence for second order acceleration in a very old remnant. Such evidence is provided by the molecular compositions along several lines of sight to the Perseus OB2 association. We find as a third significant result that the model value of the diffusion coefficient at energies in the range of 1 MeV agrees within about an order of magnitude with that which we infer from the molecular data.  相似文献

A Monte Carlo simulation is used to study the effects of Kappa H+distributions in the polar wind. We consider the gravity, the polarization electric field, the divergence of geomagnetic field lines and Coulomb collisions of H+ in a background of O+ ions. The aim is to study the consequences of a velocity distribution function with an enhanced high energy tail instead of a Maxwellian distribution as assumed in earlier Monte Carlo simulations. The transformation of the velocity distribution function of H+ ions as a function of the altitude is presented. Effects resulting from the acceleration of the particles by the polarization electric field and from Coulomb collisions depend on the energy of the particles. Coulomb collisions mainly affect low energy particles while high energy particles are more efficiently accelerated by the upward directed ambipolar electric field. The combination of both effects results in double-hump velocity distribution functions developing in the transition region. We study consequences of suprathermal tails distributions on the shape of the double-hump and on the moments of the velocity distribution function. We report on theoretical efforts to understand the process of vaporization and ion formation upon hypervelocity impact of small cosmic dust particles on a solid surface. Such collisions occur at the surface of solid bodies within the planetary system, which do not have an atmosphere as well as in various actual and upcoming space missions for in-situ measurements of interplanetary, interstellar and cometary dust. The investigation uses Godunov's method to simulate the impact. For the very high velocitites investigated, the impacting dust particle as well as parts of the target vaporize and some of the vapor cloud may change to partially ionized. Numerical results of the impact process are communicated for an 80 kms-1impact of a slightly porous SiO2 particle on a compact SiO2surface. Values of the amount of vapor and liquid excavated from the target are given. Ionization rates are calculated for the example investigated and an estimate is given how this extrapolates to the highest conceivable velocities in the planetary system (above 100 km s-1). This contribution to the 100th commemoration of the discovery of cosmic rays (6–8 August, 2012 in Bad Saarow, Germany) is about observations of those cosmic rays that are sensitive to the structure and the dynamics of the heliosphere. This places them in the energy range of 107–1010 eV. For higher energies the heliosphere becomes transparent; below this energy range the particles become strictly locked into the solar wind. Rather than give a strict chronological development, the paper is divided into distinct topics. It starts with the Pioneer/Voyager missions to the outer edges of the heliosphere, because the most recent observations indicate that a distinct boundary of the heliosphere might have been reached at the time of the meeting. Thereafter, the Ulysses mission is described as a unique one because it is still the only spacecraft that has explored the heliosphere at very high latitudes. Next, anomalous cosmic rays, discovered in 1972–1974, constitute a separate component that is ideally suited to study the acceleration and transport of energetic particles in the heliosphere. At this point the history and development of ground-based observations is discussed, with its unique contribution to supply a stable, long-term record. The last topic is about solar energetic particles with energies up to ∼1010 eV.  相似文献

Although kilometer-scale neutrino detectors such as IceCube are discovery instruments, their conceptual design is very much anchored to the observational fact that Nature produces protons and photons with energies in excess of 1020 eV and 1013 eV, respectively. The puzzle of where and how Nature accelerates the highest energy cosmic particles is unresolved almost a century after their discovery. From energetics considerations we anticipate on the order of 10–100 neutrino events per kilometer squared per year pointing back at the source(s) of both galactic and extragalactic cosmic rays. In this context, we discuss the results of the AMANDA and IceCube neutrino telescopes which will deliver a kilometer-square-year of data over the next 3 years.  相似文献

The mass composition of high energy cosmic rays depends on their production, acceleration, and propagation. The study of cosmic ray composition can therefore reveal hints of the origin of these particles. At the South Pole, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory is capable of measuring two components of cosmic ray air showers in coincidence: the electromagnetic component at high altitude (2835 m) using the IceTop surface array, and the muonic component above ∼1 TeV using the IceCube array. This unique detector arrangement provides an opportunity for precision measurements of the cosmic ray energy spectrum and composition in the region of the knee and beyond. We present the results of a neural network analysis technique to study the cosmic ray composition and the energy spectrum from 1 PeV to 30 PeV using data recorded using the 40-string/40-station configuration of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.  相似文献

The Stardust mission returned two types of unprecedented extraterrestrial samples: the first samples of material from a known solar system body beyond the moon, the comet 81P/Wild2, and the first samples of contemporary interstellar dust. Both sets of samples were captured in aerogel and aluminum foil collectors and returned to Earth in January 2006. While the analysis of particles from comet Wild 2 yielded exciting new results, the search for and analysis of collected interstellar particles is more demanding and is ongoing.Novel dust instrumentation will tremendously improve future dust collection in interplanetary space: an Active Cosmic Dust Collector is a combination of an in-situ dust trajectory sensor (DTS) together with a dust collector consisting of aerogel and/or other collector materials, e.g. such as those used by the Stardust mission. Dust particles’ trajectories are determined by the measurement of induced electrical signals when charged particles fly through a position sensitive electrode system. The recorded waveforms enable the reconstruction of the velocity vector with high precision. The DTS described here was subject to performance tests at the Heidelberg dust accelerator at the same time as the recording of impact signals from potential collector materials. The tests with dust particles in the speed range from 3 to 40 km/s demonstrate that trajectories can be measured with accuracies of ~1° in direction and ~1% in speed. The sensitivity of the DTS electronics is of the order of 10?16 C and thus the trajectory of cosmic dust particles as small as 0.4 μm size can be measured. The impact position on the collector can be determined with better than 1 mm precision, which will ease immensely the task of locating sub-micron-sized particles on the collector. Statistically significant numbers of trajectories of interplanetary and interstellar dust particles can thus be collected in interplanetary space and their compositions correlated with their trajectories.  相似文献

In this paper, we used CORSIKA code to understand the characteristics of cosmic ray induced showers at extremely high energy as a function of energy, detector distance to shower axis, number, and density of secondary charged particles and the nature particle producing the shower. Based on the standard properties of the atmosphere, lateral and longitudinal development of the shower for photons and electrons has been investigated. Fluorescent light has been collected by the detector for protons, helium, oxygen, silicon, calcium and iron primary cosmic rays in different energies. So we have obtained a number of electrons per unit area, distance to the shower axis, shape function of particles density, percentage of fluorescent light, lateral distribution of energy dissipated in the atmosphere and visual field angle of detector as well as size of the shower image. We have also shown that location of highest percentage of fluorescence light is directly proportional to atomic number of elements. Also we have shown when the distance from shower axis increases and the shape function of particles density decreases severely. At the first stages of development, shower axis distance from detector is high and visual field angle is small; then with shower moving toward the Earth, angle increases. Overall, in higher energies, the fluorescent light method has more efficiency. The paper provides standard calibration lines for high energy showers which can be used to determine the nature of the particles.  相似文献

The formulae which give the propagation characteristics of a wave packet in a dispersive and amplifying medium, are established. Application is made to the propagation of Pc 1 elements through a magnetosphere constituted of a cold plasma and a high energy proton population. It is shown that the spectral shape, in a frequency-time coordinate system, of the Pc 1 elements is related to two terms : v = d2ω/dk2, which represents the variation of the group velocity with frequency and which depends only on the cold plasma characteristics, and μ = -d2γ/dk2, in which γ is the amplification coefficient depending on the frequency and which is related to the high energy particle distribution function. When v ? μ, only the usual dispersion effects occur, but a new method is found for determining the line of force on which the micropulsations are generated, without making any assumption about the cold plasma density distribution inside the magnetosphere. It is also possible to deduce some characteristics about the high energy proton distribution. Theoretical computations are presented, which give the frequency variation of the amplification coefficient as a function of the e-folding energy and the anisotropy factor of these high energy protons. Applications are made to ~30 pearl events which are analysed in detail according to this theory. When μ ? v, other effects do appear. After a preliminary phase, the pearl elements can become parallel for a while, or even re-erect before lying again; the duration of each element gives an indication about the number of interacting particles. The conditions for the validity of the quasi-linear theory, and some other non-linear effects related with the interpretation of Pc 1 micropulsations are also discussed.

Ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs, E > 1018 eV) from extragalactic sources deviate in the galactic and intergalactic magnetic fields, which explains the diffusive character of their propagation, the isotropization of their total flux, and the absence of UHECR clusters associated with individual sources. Extremely high energy cosmic rays (E > 1019.7 eV) are scattered mainly in localized magnetized structures, such as galaxy clusters, filaments, etc., with a mean free path of tens of megaparsecs; therefore, in the case of nearby transient sources, a substantial contribution to the observed flux is expected from unscattered and weakly scattered particles, which may be a decisive factor in the identification of these sources. We propose a method for calculating the time evolution of the UHECR energy spectra based on analytical solutions of the transport equation with the explicit determination of the contributions from scattered and unscattered particles. As examples, we consider the cases of transient activity of the nearest active galactic nucleus, Centaurus A, and the acceleration of UHECRs by a young millisecond pulsar.  相似文献

Within the more than 30 yr of cosmic ray astrophysics, neither their origin nor their precise mode of propagation have found undisputable explanations. Among the favoured boosters have been point sources, like supernovae and pulsars, as well as extended sources, like cosmic clouds and supernova remnants. Extended sources have been proposed by Fermi (1949), and pushed more recently by a number of investigators because of the huge available reservoirs, and because repetitive shock acceleration can generate power law spectra which are similar to the ones observed (Axfordet al., 1977; Bell, 1978; Blandford and Ostriker, 1978; Krymsky, 1977). Yet the shock acceleration model cannot easily be adjusted to achieve particle energies in excess of some critical energy, of order 104±1 GeV (Völket al., 1981). For this and several other reasons, the suggestion is revived that neutron stars are the dominant source of high-energy cosmic rays. To be more precise: the (relativistic) ionic component of the cosmic rays is argued to be injected by young binary neutron stars (?105 yr) whose rotating magnetospheres act like grindstones in the wind of their companion (Kundt, 1976). The high-energy (?30 GeV) electron-positron component may be generated by young pulsars (?105 yr) and by collision processes, and the electron component below 30 GeV predominantly by supernova remnants.  相似文献

Cosmic rays of interest here are electrically charged protons or nuclei having kinetic energy of the order of 1018 eV or more. The theory of cosmic-ray propagation is carried out on the assumption that the original particle may be of extragalactic origin. The curvature and gradient drift is incorporated in the anti-symmetric term of the diffusion tensor. The theory of force-field is examined including diffusion, convection, and energy losses of the cosmic rays. Finally some observation aspects are included in the concluding remarks.  相似文献
