Water and sediment dynamics at Saint Lawrence River mouth   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The main features of the hydrological regime and morphological structure of the estuarine-type mouth area of the Saint Lawrence River are considered. Data on the structure of water masses, thermal and ice regimes in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, which has a significant effect on the estuary, are given. The major attention is paid to water mixing processes, water and sediment dynamics in the estuary under the joint effect of river runoff and tides, and as a function of bed topography. The parameter determining the type of water stratification and circulation is discussed. The effect of the Coriolis force on the stratified flow in the estuary and formation of the geostrophic current is discussed.  相似文献

The general geographic, hydrographic, climatic, and hydrological characteristics of the Congo R. basin are considered. The major features of the riverine and marine factors that have their effect on the hydrological regime and morphology of the delta and estuary of the Congo R. are identified; the effect of a submarine canyon on the morphological features of the estuary is analyzed in detail; and changes in river delta structure in the XX century and currently are considered. The hydrological—morphological characteristics of the largest mouths of African rivers, the formation conditions of water and sediment runoff, and variations of their deltas are compared.  相似文献

The main regularities of hydrological and hydrological-environmental processes occurring within the complex estuary, the Chesapeake Bay and the mouths of its tributaries, are discussed. The peculiarities of the estuary morphological structure, including the structures of tidal and net currents, salinity and water turbidity fields and their variability, the environmental conditions, and their human-induced changes. Using the Chesapeake Bay as an example, it became possible to reveal the basic features of classical estuaries subject to a considerable impact of river runoff and featuring mixing of river and sea water and moderate stratification of the water mass. It is shown that the regularities of hydrological processes in the Chesapeake Bay are typical of many mouth water bodies of estuarine type (inlets, drowned river valleys, lagoons, and tidal estuaries proper).  相似文献

The study is focused on the specific features of ice regime in Amur lower reaches and the structure of ice surface in branches of different size and dynamic state. The main features of ice stratigraphy in different parts of the river have been identified, and ice cover characteristics have been found to show considerable heterogeneity across the channel. Quantitative data on the concentration of terrigenous material in the ice and its distribution within the ice mass have been collected. The amount of terrigenous material was estimated in the ice in Amur lower reaches, from where it is largely exported into the Sea of Okhotsk during spring ice drift.  相似文献

General geographic features of the Thames River, its basin, and mouth area, consisting of the tidal mouth reach of the river, a large estuary, and an open nearshore zone of the river mouth (the North Sea coastal zone) are discussed. The peculiarities of river and sea hydrological factors responsible for the regime of the Thames River mouth area are described in detail. Characteristics of the river water runoff were specified and supplemented by the data on the river inundations in the area of London. Particular emphasis was placed on variations in the mean sea level in the area of the Thames River mouth as well as on specific features of tides and storm surges in the area of the sea inlet into the estuary. Main regularities in the estuary evolution during Holocene and present-day morphological processes in the Thames River mouth area were revealed.  相似文献

The main features of the structure and water regime of the mouth area of the Senegal River and their changes caused by river regulation in its upper reaches and within its delta area are considered. Data on water and sediment runoff of the Senegal River and their variations along the river are specified. River runoff was found to dramatically decrease in recent decades because of a drought. Zoning of river mouth area was carried out, and morphological processes in its estuary, in particular, the formation of a new outlet of the river into the ocean with the formation of a lagoon, are described.  相似文献

A method of spatial calibration and verification of regional numerical physically based models of river runoff formation, incorporating runoff formation processes in the main river channel and its tributaries, was used to obtain a statistical estimate of the quality of river runoff calculation by conventional and alternative criteria focused on runoff reproduction in different phases of water regime and the characteristics of its variations. The analysis of the simulation quality of the annual and mean monthly river runoff (average runoff, standard deviation, and the coefficient of variation) at the near-mouth gages over the historical period with boundary conditions represented by data of global climate models showed the results to be satisfactory. This allows the proposed combination of climate and hydrological models to be used to study physically based regional variations of water regime under different physiographic and climatic conditions in the examined river basins with flood runoff regime (the Amur R.) and the predominant snowmelt runoff during spring flood (the Lena R.).  相似文献

Meteorological conditions, biochemical processes in water bodies and anthropogenic pressure of a region are the main factors to determine the atmosphere water-body gas exchange. Research on oxygen outflows in the Dnjepr estuary region has shown that though gas exchange with atmosphere permanently exists its intensity varies throughout a day, vegetation period, year. The process of evasion is the most active in the flood plain pools of the river. Oxygen exchange between the atmosphere and a river is to be determined with physical characteristics of water outflow and with the anthropogenic influence. Oxygen absorption from the atmosphere is dominating for the liman water area in spite of differences between its parts. The obtained results have shown that gas exchange between river estuary pools and the atmosphere is of great importance for the oxygen balance of these pools.  相似文献

The hydroclimatic conditions of water runoff formation and the hydrography of Parana and Uruguay river basins in the South America are considered. A survey of the recent studies of the hydrological regime of these rivers is given. Observation data are used to evaluate the long-term average values of water runoff and suspended sediment yield in the Parana and Uruguay and their variations along the rivers. Characteristics of many-year runoff variations in the rivers were evaluated. A climate-induced increase was identified in the Parana and Uruguay water runoff, and the corresponding present-day trends in river runoff variations in both rivers were evaluated. The total water runoff and suspended sediment yield of the Parana and Uruguay into La Plata estuary were calculated. Water balance of the drainage basin of La Plata estuary was characterized.  相似文献

The main hydrological and morphological features of the Columbia River mouth area, including its tidal estuary, are discussed. Close attention is given to the characteristics of large-scale hydraulic projects in the river basin as well as to dredging and channel training operations in the river mouth area and to the assessment of the impact of these operations on hydrological and morphological processes. Variations in the regime of river flow after its regulation, processes of dynamic interaction and mixing of river and sea water in the estuary are characterized. Changes of the mouth bar and sea coasts near the Columbia River mouth as a result of construction of stream-training jetties are discussed.  相似文献

Amur Bay (Sea of Japan) is used as an example to show that the range of diurnal variations of hydrochemical characteristics in the coastal zone of a sea subject to the effect of continental runoff features some regularities. Specifically, variations of water salinity in the surface frontal zone of estuaries exponentially increase toward the river and reach the largest magnitude in the zone of high longitudinal gradients, where diurnal salinity distributions are found to deviate from the normal law.  相似文献

Regularities in the response of the mouths of major rivers, flowing into the Caspian Sea, to large-scale variations in its level and river water runoff and sediment yield are considered. Changes in the morphological structure and hydrological regime of the Volga, Terek, Sulak, Ural, and Kura mouths have been analyzed in both geological past and separately for three modern periods: a considerable drop in Caspian Sea level before 1978, its abrupt rise in 1978–1995, and a relative stabilization in the subsequent years. Specific features were identified in the hydrological-morphological processes in different mouths, caused by the differences in river sediment yields, and the slopes of delta surface and mouth nearshore beds. Some theoretical and methodological approaches were verified in the analysis and evaluation of the processes under consideration. The obtained results of studies of the mouths of rivers flowing into the Caspian Sea can be regarded as examples and analogues in the assessment of processes, which take place at the mouths of other Russian and world rivers at present and can take place in the future under anticipated natural and anthropogenic variations in sea level and river runoff.  相似文献

Regularities in processes of seawater intrusion into the rivers of Senegal, Saloum, Gambia, and Casamance in West Africa are analyzed. The seawater intrusion during the low-flow period, which is a common phenomenon for the lower reaches of these rivers, has taken on extreme features in the course of the severe drought that occurred in West Africa in the 1970s–1980s. The processes of progressing water salinization in estuaries under the impact of drastic reduction of atmospheric precipitation and river runoff, considerable evaporation water losses, and tides are described. Due consideration is given to the unique hydrological phenomenon, i.e., the so-called reverse estuary. The Senegal River mouth is taken as a case study of cyclic variations in runoff, water salinity, and distance of saltwater penetration into the river. Certain environmental consequences of water salinization are discussed using the Casamance River estuary as an example. Methods used in Africa to prevent seawater intrusion and salinization of estuaries harmful for the environment and economy are described in this article.  相似文献

Data on Amur Bay (the Sea of Japan) are used to show the existence of a dependence between the diurnal variability and the mean daily concentrations of various hydrochemical characteristics, which can be approximated by power function. The formation mechanism of such dependences is considered. Relationships between the parameters of such functions and variability of water salinity are obtained. The possible variation limits of such parameters in a coastal tidal zone of a sea, subject to the effect of coastal runoff. In the frontal mouth zone, one of the parameter (the exponent) linearly increases toward the river, thus reflecting the increase in the contribution of water dynamics to the diurnal variability of characteristics. The notion of variability of characteristics “by salinity” is introduced.  相似文献

The main attention is given to the analysis of water circulation and sediment dynamics in the Gironde Estuary under the joint impact of seasonal river flow and tidal fluctuations. The hydrological regime, morphological structure, and landscapes of the Indus River delta are considered, and the significant changes that took place in them during the second half of the XX century because of the large-scale hydraulic engineering activity in the river’s basin, runoff regulation, and water withdrawal for irrigation are analyzed. It is shown that the abrupt decrease in water and sediment runoff in the Indus have affected the hydrological processes in the river’s lower reaches and caused delta degradation.  相似文献

A regional numerical physico-mathematical model of river runoff formation is used to study the possibility to assess long-term variations of water regime characteristics in the Amur R. in the XXI century. Two methods were used to specify climate projections as boundary conditions in the hydrological model: (1) based on the results of calculations with an ensemble of global climate models of CMI5 project, (2) based on data obtained by linear transformation of series of actual meteorological observations with the use of normal annual climate parameters calculated by climate models. The results of numerical experiments were used to analyze the sensitivity of the anomaly of Amur normal annual runoff to changes in the climate normals of air temperature and precipitation. The anomalies of normal annual runoff were shown to respond similarly (within the accuracy of sensitivity coefficient estimates) to changes in the appropriate climate normals, whatever the way of specifying climate projections.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal changes in the Lena River runoff over the last 9 thousand years are reconstructed through studying the freshwater microfossils in sediment cores obtained from the Laptev Sea inner shelf immediately adjacent to the Lena delta and subject to the freshening effect of river water inflowing the sea through the main arms of the delta (the Trofimovskaya, Bykovskaya, and Tumatskaya arms), the sediments having been thoroughly AMS 14C dated. The freshwater species of diatoms (predominantly the river ones) and green algae that enter the shelf with river water served as indicators of river runoff. The reconstruction of paleosalinity of the sea surface water in the regions under study is based on the relationships (established earlier) between the distribution of freshwater diatoms in the surface layers of sediments in the Arctic seas and the gradients of water salinity in summer. Data on variations in the composition of aquatic microfossil associations in sediments and the reconstructed paleosalinity in the regions of the eastern and western paleovalleys of the Lena River are used to determine the main paleohydrologic events that controlled the variations in the Lena runoff into the shelf zone of the Laptev Sea during the Holocene.  相似文献
