Gamma-ray bursts are often modelled as jet-like outflows directed towards the observer; the cone angle of the jet is then commonly inferred from the time at which there is a steepening in the power-law decay of the afterglow. We consider an alternative model in which the jet has a beam pattern where the luminosity per unit solid angle (and perhaps also the initial Lorentz factor) decreases smoothly away from the axis, rather than having a well-defined cone angle within which the flow is uniform. We show that the break in the afterglow light curve then occurs at a time that depends on the viewing angle. Instead of implying a range of intrinsically different jets – some very narrow, and others with a similar power spread over a wider cone – the data on afterglow breaks could be consistent with a standardized jet, viewed from different angles. We discuss the implication of this model for the luminosity function.  相似文献

The radio counterparts to the 15-μm sources in the European Large Area ISO Survey southern fields are identified in 1.4-GHz maps down to ∼80 μJy. The radio–mid-infrared correlation is investigated and derived for the first time at these flux densities for a sample of this size. Our results show that radio and mid-infrared (MIR) luminosities correlate almost as well as radio and far-infrared (FIR), at least up to   z ≃ 0.6  . Using the derived relation and its spread together with the observed 15-μm counts, we have estimated the expected contribution of the 15-μm extragalactic populations to the radio source counts and the role of MIR starburst galaxies in the well-known 1.4-GHz source excess observed at sub-mJy levels. Our analysis demonstrates that IR emitting starburst galaxies do not contribute significantly to the 1.4-GHz counts for strong sources, but start to become a significant fraction of the radio source population at flux densities ≲0.5–0.8 mJy. They are expected to be responsible for more than 60 per cent of the observed radio counts at ≲0.05 mJy. These results are in agreement with the existing results on optical identifications of faint radio sources.  相似文献

We have carried out single and multisite photometry of the three β Cephei stars β and 15 CMa as well as KZ Mus. For the two stars in CMa, we obtained 270 h of measurement in the Strömgren uvy and Johnson V filters, while 150 h of time-resolved Strömgren uvy photometry was acquired for KZ Mus. All three stars are multiperiodic variables, with three (β CMa) and four (15 CMa, KZ Mus) independent pulsation modes. Two of the mode frequencies of 15 CMa are new discoveries and one of the known modes showed amplitude variations over the last 33 yr. Taken together, this fully explains the diverse behaviour of the star reported in the literature.
Mode identification by means of the amplitude ratios in the different passbands suggests one radial mode for each star. In addition, β CMa has a dominant  ℓ= 2  mode while its third mode is non-radial with unknown ℓ. The non-radial modes of 15 CMa, which are  ℓ≤ 3  , form an almost equally split triplet that, if physical, would imply that we see the star under an inclination angle larger than 55°. The strongest non-radial mode of KZ Mus is  ℓ= 2  , followed by the radial mode and a dipole mode. Its weakest known mode is non-radial with unknown ℓ, confirming previous mode identifications for the pulsations of the star.
The phased light curve for the strongest mode of 15 CMa has a descending branch steeper than the rising branch. A stillstand phenomenon during the rise to maximum light is indicated. Given the low photometric amplitude of this non-radial mode this is at first sight surprising, but it can be explained by the aspect angle of the mode.  相似文献

The BeppoSAX High Energy Large Area Survey (HELLAS) has surveyed several tens of deg2 of the sky in the     band down to a flux of about     . The source surface density of     at the survey limit corresponds to a resolved fraction of the     X-ray background (XRB) of the order of     per cent. The extrapolation of the HELLAS     towards fainter fluxes with a Euclidean slope is consistent with the first XMM–Newton measurements, in the same energy band, which are a factor of 20 times more sensitive. The source counts in the hardest band so far surveyed by X-ray satellites are used to constrain XRB models. It is shown that in order to reproduce the     counts over the range of fluxes covered by BeppoSAX and XMM–Newton a large fraction of highly absorbed     , luminous     active galactic nuclei is needed. A sizeable number of more heavily obscured, Compton-thick, objects cannot be ruled out but they are not required by the present data. The model predicts an absorption distribution consistent with that found from the hardness ratios analysis of the so far identified HELLAS sources. Interestingly enough, there is evidence of a decoupling between X-ray absorption and optical reddening indicators, especially at high redshifts/luminosities where several broad-line quasars show hardness ratios typical of absorbed power-law models with     .  相似文献

We have used very deep XMM–Newton observations of the Chandra Deep Field -South to examine the spectral properties of the faint active galactic nucleus (AGN) population. Crucially, redshift measurements are available for 84 per cent (259/309) of the XMM–Newton sample. We have calculated the absorption and intrinsic luminosities of the sample using an extensive Monte Carlo technique incorporating the specifics of the XMM–Newton observations. 23 sources are found to have substantial absorption and intrinsic X-ray luminosities greater than 1044 erg s−1, putting them in the 'type-2' QSO regime. We compare the redshift, luminosity and absorption distributions of our sample to the predictions of a range of AGN population models. In contrast to recent findings from ultradeep Chandra surveys, we find that there is little evidence that the absorption distribution is dependent on either redshift or intrinsic X-ray luminosity. The pattern of absorption in our sample is best reproduced by models in which ∼75 per cent of the AGN population is heavily absorbed at all luminosities and redshifts.  相似文献

At the faint end of the deepest X-ray surveys, a population of X-ray luminous galaxies is seen. In this paper, we present the results of a cross-correlation between the residual, unresolved X-ray photons in a very deep X-ray survey and the positions of faint galaxies, in order to examine the importance of these objects at even fainter flux levels. We measure a significant correlation on all angular scales up to ∼1 arcmin. This signal could account for a significant fraction of the unresolved X‐ray background, approximately 35 per cent if the clustering is similar to optically selected galaxies. However, the angular form of the correlation is seen to be qualitatively similar to that expected for clusters of galaxies and the X-ray emission could be associated with hot gas in clusters or with QSOs within galaxy clusters rather than emission from individual faint galaxies. The relative contribution from each of these possibilities cannot be determined with the current data.  相似文献

We develop a model of an accretion disc in which the variability induced at a given radius is governed by a damped harmonic oscillator at the corresponding epicyclic frequency. That variability induces both linear and non-linear responses in the locally emitted radiation. The total observed variability of a source is the sum of these contributions over the disc radius weighted by the energy dissipation rate at each radius. It is shown that this simple model, which effectively has only three parameters including the normalization, can explain the range of the power spectra observed from Cyg X-1 in the soft state. Although a degeneracy between the black hole mass and the strength of the damping does not allow a unique determination of the mass, we can still constrain it to  ≲(16–20) M  . We also show that our model preserves the observed linear rms–flux relationship even in the presence of the non-linear flux response.  相似文献

Multiwavelength observations are reported here of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar system GRO J1008−57. Over ten years worth of data are gathered together to show that the periodic X-ray outbursts are dependant on both the binary motion and the size of the circumstellar disc. In the first instance an accurate orbital solution is determined from pulse periods, and in the second case the strength and shape of the Hα emission line is shown to be a valuable indicator of disc size and its behaviour. Furthermore, the shape of the emission line permits a direct determination of the disc size which is in good agreement with theoretical estimates. A detailed study of the pulse period variations during outbursts determined the binary period to be 247.8 ± 0.4 d, in good agreement with the period determined from the recurrence of the outbursts.  相似文献
