Lightning discharge generated in the protoplanetary nebula is viewed as a temporally isolated surge in the flow of electrically charged particles, similar to that of terrestrial lightning. If the current is intense enough, a powerful circular impulse magnetic field is generated around the instantaneous virtual electric conductor. Such magnetic field is capable of magnetizing dust grains containing ferromagnetic components present in its vicinity to their saturation levels. As a result, dust grains attract one another, forming the aggregates. This magnetically driven attraction suggests an important process possibly operational at an early stage of the planetary accretion. Based on both a classical model for electric conductor, and the theory of Lienard–Wiechert electromagnetic potentials, our calculations show that the magnetic impulse due to a discharge channel of a few cm in diameter transferring a charge of about 104 electrons reaches as high as 10 T. At these magnetic fields, the ferromagnetic dust grains, and possibly the already-formed larger aggregates as well, are easily magnetized to the saturation levels, producing compact clusters exhibiting permanent magnetic moments.  相似文献

We have shown that a current-carrying plasma loop can be heated by magnetic pinch driven by the pressure imbalance between inside and outside the loop, using a 3-dimensional electromagnetic (EM) particle code. Both electrons and ions in the loop can be heated in the direction perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field, therefore the perpendicular temperature can be increased about 10 times compared with the parallel temperature. This temperature anisotropy produced by the magnetic pinch heating can induce a plasma instability, by which high-frequency electromagnetic waves can be excited. The plasma current which is enhanced by the magnetic pinch can also excite a kinetic kink instability, which can heat ions perpendicular to the magnetic field. The heating mechanism of ions as well as the electromagnetic emission could be important for an understanding of the coronal loop heating and the electromagnetic wave emissions from active coronal regions.  相似文献

Numerical simulation for the dynamics of a coronal filamentary magnetic loop has been made under the assumption that the field is initially force-free and an electric resistivity suddenly increases at a given moment due to an appearance of ion sound waves, which can be excited due to a high current density if a characteristic radius r 0 of the magnetic loop is about 3 km or less in a magnetic field B 0 of 1000 G. During the resistive decay of the magnetic field a strong field-aligned electric field is created and maintained for a sufficient time to acceleratie both electrons and protons to a high energy, which is proportional to B 0/r 0 and can be 100 MeV if r 0 = 10 km and B 0 = 1000 G. If the coronal magnetic tube is composed of many such filamentary loops, the total number of accelerated electrons is consistent with the observations.  相似文献

A model of the sheared magnetic field in a coronal loop is used to evaluate the average cross-field suppression of axial thermal conduction. If the energy source is uniform in radius, this can lead to heat-flux reduction by a factor greater than three. When the source is annular, in a region of radius where the current density and shear are peaked, the effect can be significantly larger. In one extreme case, however, in which magnetic tearing provides the heating in a very narrow layer, the spatial resonance of the source excitation in a long loop leads to approximately axial conduction.  相似文献

Mars Express (MEX) does not carry its own magnetometer which complicates interpretation of ASPERA-3/MEX ion measurements. The direction of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is especially important because it, among other things, determines the direction of the convective electric field and orientation of the cross tail current sheet and tail lobes. In this paper we present a case study to show the properties of the magnetic field near Mars in a quasi-neutral hybrid (QNH) model at the orbits where the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) has made measurements, present a method to derive the IMF clock angle by comparing fields in a hybrid model and the direction of the magnetic field measured by MGS by deriving the IMF clock angle. We also use H+ ring velocity distribution observations upstream of the bow shock measured by the IMA/ASPERA-3 instrument on board MEX spacecraft. These observations are used to indirectly provide the orientation of the IMF. We use a QNH model (HYB-Mars) where ions are modeled as particles while electrons form a mass-less charge neutralizing fluid. We found that the direct MGS and non-direct IMA observations of the orientation magnetic field vectors in non-crustal magnetic field regions are consistent with the global magnetic field draping pattern predicted by the global model.

Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and their subset, magnetic clouds (MCs), are important manifestations of solar activity which have substantial impact on the geomagnetic field. We re-analyze events already identified in Wind and Voyager 2 data and estimate changes of their geometry along the path from the Sun. The analysis is based on the thickness of the sheath between a shock and a particular ICME or MC which is proportional to the apparent curvature radius of ICMEs/MCs. We have found that this apparent radius of curvature increases with the Mach number and this effect is attributed to the larger deformation of the fast ICME/MC. Further, the relative sheath thickness that is proportional to the flux rope oblateness decreases with the magnetic field intensity inside the ICME/MC and increases with the heliospheric distance.  相似文献

We investigate the topology of magnetic clouds using energetic particles from a variety of sources outside the clouds as probes to remotely sense the interconnections of the magnetic field. We find that only a small percentage of field lines in magnetic clouds are truly closed directly to the Sun, so as to exclude particles from an external source. Field lines that are open to the outer heliosphere must be mixed with closed field lines on a fine spatial scale in the clouds to explain the simultaneous observation of anomalous cosmic rays from the outer heliosphere and of counter-streaming suprathermal electrons from the corona. The results of this paper show that, given sufficient time, particles accelerated at shock waves outside magnetic clouds have access to the interior and to a wide region of solar longitude in interplanetary space surrounding the clouds.  相似文献

The electrostatic interaction of charged dust grains is analysed by considering the interaction of two charged conducting spheres, rather than the hitherto considered model of a sphere and a point charge. Considerable mofification of the induced charge effects results when the nonzero radius of the second sphere is taken into account. In particular, it is shown that image charge or polarization effects can only be of significance as far as collision rates are concerned when modulus of the charge ratio of two colliding grains is very different from the ratio of their radii. Such a charge ratio deviates from the original Spitzer calculation, where grains have identical charge, irrespective of the grain material, for a given radius. This deviation may occur in cool gas clouds such as Hi regions and dense molecular clouds where the discreteness of electron charge is important, or in interstellar clouds where considerable photo-ionization of a mixture of grain materials of widely varying photoelectric efficiencies takes place. It is further argued that, with regard to the induced charge effects, the accretion rate will not be significantly different for dielectric as compared to conducting grains, regardless of the type of gas cloud under consideration.  相似文献

A mechanism of electron acceleration and storage of energetic particles in solar and stellar coronal magnetic loops, based on oscillations of the electric current, is considered. The magnetic loop is presented as an electric circuit with the electric current generated by convective motions in the photosphere. Eigenoscillations of the electric current in a loop induce an electric field directed along the loop axis. It is shown that the sudden reductions that occur in the course of type IV continuum and pulsating type III observed in various frequency bands (25?–?180 MHz, 110?–?600 MHz, 0.7?–?3.0 GHz) in solar flares provide evidence for acceleration and storage of the energetic electrons in coronal magnetic loops. We estimate the energization rate and the energy of accelerated electrons and present examples of the storage of energetic electrons in loops in the course of flares on the Sun or on ultracool stars. We also discuss the efficiency of the suggested mechanism as compared with the electron acceleration during the five-minute photospheric oscillations and with the acceleration driven by the magnetic Rayleigh–Taylor instability.  相似文献

We present simulations of the non-linear evolution of the m=1 kink mode in line-tied coronal loops. We focus on the structure of the current concentrations which develop as a consequence of the instability in two different types of magnetic field configuration, one containing a net axial current and the other with a vanishing total axial current. In the first case, current sheets develop one third of the way from footpoint to loop apex (where the non-linear kink mode folds on itself) within the body of the current channel, while in the second case the current sheet develops at the loop apex at the interface between the current containing channel and the outer axial potential field. In both cases line-tying, while playing a stabilizing role in the linear theory, acts as a destabilizing agent for the non-linear resistive evolution. The unwrapping of magnetic field lines in the vanishing axial current model appears to be consistent with the geometry of compact recurrent loop flares.  相似文献

We test a new emission mechanism in pulsar magnetospheres, eventually responsible in part for the high level of observed radio radiation. This is carried out by comparing the efficiency of the two-stream instability of Langmuir waves in a pulsar emission region, where the stationary and non-stationary characters of pair plasma outflows produced in the gap region are characterized by two different time-scales. On the shorter time-scale, the Ruderman &38; Sutherland 'sparking' phenomenon leads to the creation of pair plasma clouds, in motion along magnetic field lines, that contain particles with a large spectrum of momenta. The overlapping of particles with different energies produced in successive clouds results in an efficient 'two stream'-like instability. This effect is a consequence of the non-stationary character of the pair plasma produced in the gap region, just above the magnetic poles of the neutron star. On a long time-scale, resulting pair plasma outflows in pulsar magnetospheres can be treated as stationary. In this case, the instability which results from interaction between existing primary beam particles and the pair plasma is negligible, whereas the instability owing to interaction between electrons and positrons of the pair plasma itself, and more precisely to their relative drift motion along curved magnetic field lines, is effective. We derive characteristic features of the triggered instability, using specific distribution functions to describe either particles in the assembly of clouds or relative drifting of electrons and positrons in these same plasma clouds. Although linear and local, our treatment suggests that non-stationary effects may compete with, or even dominate over, drifting effects in parts of pulsar emission regions.  相似文献

An analysis is made to calculate input impedance of a loop antenna for radiation of the VLF whistler mode in the magnetosphere. The magnetosphere is assumed to be represented by a cold, uniform and collisionless magnetoplasma medium. Assuming a uniform current distribution of a circular loop, oriented at an arbitrary angle with respect to the Earth's magnetic field line, several closed-form expressions for the loop impedance have been derived. It is found that the loop input reactance is in substantial agreement with the self-inductance of a loop in free space and that the radiation resistance for a small loop can be as large as ~10 2 Ω. It is also found that a second order quasi-static theory is quite valid for determining the input impedance for small loops radiating VLF whistlers in the magnetosphere.  相似文献

The Fokker-Planck equation is numerically solved to study the electron velocity distribution under steady heat conduction with an applied axial electric current in a model coronal loop.If the loop temperature is so high that the electron mean-free path is longer than the local temperature scale height along the loop, a velocity hump appears at about the local thermal electron velocity. The hump is attributed to cooler electrons moving up the temperature gradient to compensate for the runaway electrons moving down the gradient. If the ratio between the mean free path and temperature scale height is greater than about 2, negative absorption for the plasma waves can appear (waves grow). This effect is enhanced by the presence of axial electric current in the half of the coronal loop in which the electrons carrying the current are drifting up the temperature gradient. Thus, the plasma instability may occur in the coronal elementary magnetic flux tubes. Although the present paper is limited to show the critical condition and linear growth rate of the instability, the following scenarios may be inferred. If the flux tubes change from marginally stable to unstable against the plasma instability, due to an increase in the loop temperature, anomalous resistivity may suddenly appear because of the growth of plasma waves. Then a high axial electric field is induced that may accelerate particles. This could be the onset of impulsive loop flares. For a low electric current, if the loop temperature is sufficiently high to give the negative absorption for the plasma waves in a large part of the coronal loop, steady plasma turbulence may originate. This could be a source for the type I radio noise storm.  相似文献

Data acquired by the Galileo magnetometer on five passes by Ganymede have been used to characterize Ganymede's internal magnetic moments. Three of the five passes were useful for determination of the internal moments through quadrupole order. Models representing the internal field as the sum of dipole and quadrupole terms or as the sum of a permanent dipole field upon which is superimposed an induced magnetic dipole driven by the time varying component of the externally imposed magnetic field of Jupiter's magnetosphere give equally satisfactory fits to the data. The permanent dipole moment has an equatorial field magnitude 719 nT. It is tilted by 176° from the spin axis with the pole in the southern hemisphere rotated by 24° from the Jupiter-facing meridian plane toward the trailing hemisphere. The data are consistent with an inductive response of a good electrical conductor of radius approximately 1 Ganymede radius. Although the data do not enable us to establish the presence of an inductive response beyond doubt, we favor the inductive response model because it gives a good fit to the data using only four parameters to describe the internal sources of fields, whereas the equally good dipole plus quadrupole fit requires eight parameters. An inductive response is consistent with a buried conducting shell, probably liquid water with dissolved electrolytes, somewhere in the first few hundred km below Ganymede's surface. The depth at which the ocean is buried beneath the surface is somewhat uncertain, but our favored model suggests a depth of the order of 150 km. As both temperature and pressure increase with depth and the melting temperature of pure ice decreases to a minimum at ∼170 km depth, it seems possible that near this location, a layer of water would be sandwiched between layers of ice.  相似文献

Mars Global Surveyor detected cold electrons above the Martian ionopause, which can be interpreted as detached ionospheric plasma clouds. Similar observations by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter electron temperature probe showed also extreme spatial irregularities of electrons in the form of plasma clouds on Venus, which were explained by the occurrence of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Therefore, we suggest that the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability may also detach ionospheric plasma clouds on Mars. We investigate the instability growth rate at the Martian ionopause resulting from the flow of the solar wind for the case where the interplanetary magnetic field is oriented normal to the flow direction. Since the velocity shear near the subsolar point is very small, this area is stable with respect to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. We found that the highest flow velocities are reached at the equatorial flanks near the terminator plane, while the maximum plasma density in the terminator plane appears at the polar areas. By comparing the instability growth rate with the magnetic barrier formation time, we found that the instability can evolve into a non-linear stage at the whole terminator plane but preferably at the equatorial flanks. Escape rates of O+ ions due to detached plasma clouds in the order of about 2×1023-3×1024 s-1 are found. Thus, atmospheric loss caused by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability should be comparable with other non-thermal loss processes. Further, we discuss our results in view of the expected observations of heavy ion loss rates by ASPERA-3 on board of Mars Express.  相似文献

We discuss the winding of a force-free axisymmetric magnetic field rooted on a heavy conductor onz=0. In quadrupolar symmetry the field expands in the half-spacez>0 and the toroidal flux concentrates on a conical surface. After a mean twist of 208°, the conical layer hosts large toroidal current loops with reversal of the magnetic flux on either side. The evolution of the field structure is described by scale-free static solutionsBr –(p+2), withp taking values between 0 and 2. The large expansion factor of the field structure is suggestive of flaring originating on the solar photosphere.  相似文献

We develop a numerical code for simulating the magnetospheres of millisecond pulsars, which are expected to have unscreened electric potentials due to the lack of magnetic pair production. We incorporate General Relativistic (GR) expressions for the electric field and charge density and include curvature radiation (CR) due to primary electrons accelerated above the stellar surface, whereas inverse Compton scattering (ICS) of thermal X-ray photons by these electrons are neglected as a second-order effect. We apply the model to PSR J0437-4715, a prime candidate for testing the GR-Electrodynamic theory, and find that the curvature radiation spectrum cuts off at energies below 15 GeV, which are well below the threshold of the H.E.S.S. telescope, whereas Classical Electrodynamics predict a much higher cutoff near 100 GeV, which should be visible for H.E.S.S., if standard assumed Classical Electrodynamics apply. GR theory also predicts a relatively narrow pulse (2φ L ∼ 0.2 phase width) centered on the magnetic axis, which sets the beaming solid angle to ∼0.5 sr per polar cap (PC) for a magnetic inclination angle of 35 relative to the spin axis, given an observer which sweeps close to the magnetic axis. We also find that EGRET observations above 100 MeV of this pulsar constrain the polar magnetic field strength to B pc < 4× 108 G for a pulsar radius of 10 km and moment of inertia of 1045 g cm2. The field strength constraint becomes even tighter for a larger radius and moment of inertia. Furthermore, a reanalysis of the full EGRET data set of this pulsar, assuming the predicted pulse shape and position, should lead to even tighter constraints on neutron star and GR parameters, up to the point where the GR-derived potential and polar cap current may be questioned.  相似文献

VLET's (Very Low Electron Temperature) are regions in the solar wind (lasting 12–30 h) in which the electron temperature is abnormally low. Because it is generally believed that the thermal conductivity parallel to the interplanetary magnetic field lines is high for electrons, i.e. the contact with the Sun should be ideal, VLET's are surprising observations. In this work a statistical analysis of many of these events is made with respect to the dependence of this phenomenon on interplanetary plasma and field parameters. In contrast with earlier work it was found that VLET's exist not only after a shock front. The statistical analysis showed further that a VLET is always associated with a VLPT (Very Low Proton Temperature) event and that, whilst on average the temperature of the electrons and protons outside the low temperature regions is about the same, the mean proton temperature inside is three times lower than that of the electrons.A particular model for VLET's is investigated in detail; the closed magnetic loop or “blob” model. By assuming: (a) pure adiabatic expansion in a radially streaming solar wind without pressure equalization across the “blob” boundary, and (b) rapid pressure equalization across the boundary, an attempt was made to quantitatively investigate the feasibility of the “blob” model in the light of plasma and field data. It can be shown that the closed magnetic loop model is unlikely to be the major cause of VLET's.  相似文献

A calculation of the equilibrium charge acquired by interstellar grains is given, which takes account of polarization charges that are induced in a grain by incident ions and electrons. Both metal and dielectric grains are considered and photoionization of the latter grains by UV radiation is taken into account where necessary. It is found that the inclusion of the polarization charges in the calculation is only important in gas clouds where the mean charge on a grain is low (<1e); that is, for HI regions and dense molecular clouds. In such clouds, the effect of the polarization charges is to increase the amount of negative charge acquired by a grain. A discussion is given concerning the validity of the classical electrostatic theory employed in the paper for small grains of radius 10–6 cm, and some astrophysical consequences of the modification of the grain charge by polarization effects are considered.  相似文献
