The structure of the large-scale background magnetic field evolves in time and space. The large-scale horizontal transport velocity field of the magnetic flux patterns was inferred over the whole solar photosphere in the course of two solar activity cycles from year 1976 to 1999. The method of velocity determination and the testing procedures of the velocity accuracy are presented. The non-axially symmetric component of the horizontal velocity was found and both zonal and meridional velocity regions were described. The horizontal large-scale transport velocity regions vary in shape and the intensity during different phases of the 11-year solar activity cycle. The total horizontal transport velocity is characterized by the presence of variable amounts of the vector field vortices with symmetric orientation relative to the solar equator. The zonal velocity regions, distributed inside of the zonal belt limited by latitudes ± 35°, are persistent for about 4 Carrington rotations. Recurrent structures of similar velocity distributions are not coherent over the whole solar photosphere.  相似文献

Temporal variations of the subsurface meridional flow with the solar cycle have been reported by several authors. The measurements are typically averaged over periods of time during which surface magnetic activity existed in the regions where the velocities are calculated. The present work examines the possible contamination of these measurements due to the extra velocity fields associated with active regions plus the uncertainties in the data obtained where strong magnetic fields are present. We perform a systematic analysis of more than five years of GONG data and compare meridional flows obtained by ring-diagram analysis before and after removing the areas of strong magnetic field. The overall trend of increased amplitude of the meridional flow towards solar minimum remains after removal of large areas associated with surface activity. We also find residual circulation toward the active belts that persists even after the removal of the surface magnetic activity, suggesting the existence of a global pattern or longitudinally-located organized flows.  相似文献

The influence of latitudinally dependent boundary conditions on the large radius values of meridional flow in the distant solar wind is examined through a double perturbation expansion of the magnetohydrodynamic equations. A general result is derived for the meridional velocity which allows arbitrary specification of radial velocity, radial magnetic field, and mass flux, as a function of colatitude at some coronal reference surface. Three specific examples are treated, including the model of Pneuman and Kopp (1971). The latter example indicates that there may be flow toward the equator at large radii, as opposed to the pure equatorial divergence of internally generated motion due to a flow which is latitudinally uniform at the reference radius. A solar cycle effect most probably averages the boundary conditions so that only the equatorial divergence from an average spherically symmetric corona is seen in comet-tail observations. This may also explain the off-and-on-again nature of the meridional gradient in the radial velocity of the solar wind as seen in radio scintillation observations.  相似文献

This paper describes a thorough reevaluation of the procedures for reducing the data acquired at the Mt. Wilson Observatory synoptic program of solar observations at the 150-foot tower. We also describe a new program of acquiring as many scans per day as possible of the solar magnetic and velocity fields. We give a new fitting formula which removes the background velocity field from each scan. An important new feature of our reduction algorithm is our treatment of the limb shift which permits time variation in this function. We identify the difference between the limb shift along the north-south axis and the east-west axis as potentially being a result of meridional circulation. Our analysis interprets the time variation in the east-west limb shift as being the result of changes in a vertical component of the meridional circulation. The performance of the system improved in 1982 as a result of the installation of a new exit slit assembly. The amplitude of the limb shift variations found prior to 1982 is larger than is easily explained with simple ideas of meridional circulation. However, we have not been able to firmly identify instrumental causes for the variations although small changes in the band-pass of the exit slit assembly could have contributed. We have established a correlation between the observed stray light in the system and a component of the velocity field which is antisymmetric with respect to the solar central meridian. We remove this stray light effect by adding an additional term to the fitting function. Finally, we show that the inclusion of the above improvements allows us to study the torsional oscillations at high latitude using a procedure which can retain the longitude dependent information about the velocity pattern.  相似文献

Using data from the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) instrument on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), we study the large-scale velocity fields in the outer part of the solar convection zone using the ring diagram technique. We use observations from four different times to study possible temporal variations in flow velocity. We find definite changes in both the zonal and meridional components of the flows. The amplitude of the zonal flow appears to increase with solar activity and the flow pattern also shifts towards lower latitude with time.  相似文献

The paper considers the relationship between the cyclic variations in the velocity of coronal mass ejections (CME) and the large-scale magnetic field structure (LSMF) in cycles 21??C?23. To characterize a typical size of the LSMF structure, we have used the index of the effective solar multipole (ESMI). The cyclic behavior of the CME occurrence rate and velocity proved to be similar to that of ESMI. The hysteresis observed in variations of the CME maximum velocity is interpreted as a manifestation of different contributions from the two field structures (local and global magnetic fields) in different phases of the 11-year activity cycle. It is suggested that cyclic variations in the maximum velocity of coronal mass ejections are due to different conditions for the formation of the complexes of active regions connected by coronal arch systems, which are the main source of high-velocity CMEs.  相似文献

Stable recurrent sunspot groups from the Greenwich data set which were identified in at least two subsequent solar rotations were traced and meridional motions were determined from the two central meridian passages. In total, 327 meridional velocities were calculated and the results for the northern and the southern solar hemisphere were compared. A dependence of the solar meridional velocity vectors on the development status, latitude and position respectively to the activity belt of sunspots is investigated. The results indicate that sunspot groups are moving on the average away from the center of activity. This was found for sunspot groups growing and decreasing in area.  相似文献

We report on large-scale horizontal flows in the solar convection zone and their variability in time and space using a local-helioseismology technique known as ring-diagram analysis. By performing this analysis on a dense mosaic of individual regions on the solar disk, i.e., a `Dense-Pack' sampling, and repeating the analysis periodically on several time scales, we are able to assess the variation of horizontal flows from day-to-day, week-to-week, and year-to-year. We find that although there are changes in the flows on all these time scales, there are also basic patterns that persist. On a daily time scale we observe that the flow is reduced in those areas which are occupied by large active regions. On somewhat longer time-scales we see bands of persistent fast and slow zonal flow that are identifiable as torsional oscillations. As we examine these bands during a series of years, we find that these bands migrate toward the equator as solar activity increases. Similarly, the latitudes at which the meridional flow reaches maximum follow these regions of fast zonal flow as they migrate equatorwards. These Dense-Pack samplings also reveal substantial differences in the zonal and meridional flow patterns in the northern and southern hemispheres.  相似文献

The time variations in the latitudinal distribution of the rotation of active regions and coronal holes are investigated. The synoptic maps obtained from observations in the He I 1083 nm line at Kitt Peak Observatory over almost three solar cycles are used as observational data. A Fourier analysis of the time series constructed from synoptic maps has yielded the following results. The rotation of active regions differs significantly from the rotation of coronal holes in all parameters: the set of the most significant rotation periods, their latitudinal distribution, and time variations. The rotation of active regions and coronal holes is characterized by variations from cycle to cycle, a time-varying north-south asymmetry. The power spectra for consecutive cycles of solar activity differ significantly for both epochs of high activity and minima. Analysis of the total power of the spectra within four selected intervals of periods from 21 to 33 days has shown that the total power is highest in the intervals of periods 24–27 and 27–30 days. This is valid for both active regions and coronal holes. The correlation between the total powers in the above intervals of periods changes noticeably with time. Long-lived or successively appearing active regions with rotation periods in the range 24–30 days are typical of the time of a sharp decrease in the total equivalent width of active regions. This includes not only the decline time of the 11-year cycles, but also the minima between recurrent activity maxima during one cycle. A predominance of long-lived coronal holes as their total equivalent width decreases is noticeable for coronal holes with rotation periods in the interval 30–33 days. All of the above results suggest that the rotation of solar structures is determined mainly by the subphotospheric sources of specific structures, not by the rotation of the main volumes of solar plasma of the quiet Sun.  相似文献

The Debrecen Photoheliographic Data catalogue is a continuation of the Greenwich Photoheliographic Results providing daily positions of sunspots and sunspot groups. We analyse the data for sunspot groups focussing on meridional motions and transfer of angular momentum towards the solar equator. Velocities are calculated with a daily shift method including an automatic iterative process of removing the outliers. Apart from the standard differential rotation profile, we find meridional motion directed towards the zone of solar activity. The difference in measured meridional flow in comparison to Doppler measurements and some other tracer measurements is interpreted as a consequence of different flow patterns inside and outside of active regions. We also find a statistically significant dependence of meridional motion on rotation velocity residuals confirming the transfer of angular momentum towards the equator. Analysis of horizontal Reynolds stress reveals that the transfer of angular momentum is stronger with increasing latitude up to about \(40^{\circ}\), where there is a possible maximum in absolute value.  相似文献

The acoustic waves generated in the solar atmosphere propagate globally as well as upwards. These waves interact with the solar magnetic field structures and are ducted upwards. The velocity of these modified acoustic waves is shown to vary in a modelled solar atmosphere. The solar plasma propagating upwards with these waves are likely to alter the observed features of spicules, granules, and supergranules during changing phases of sunspot regions.  相似文献

We have analysed a large set of sunspot group data (1874 – 2004) and find that the meridional flow strongly varies with the phase of the solar cycle, and the variation is quite different in the northern and the southern hemispheres. We also find the existence of considerable cycle-to-cycle variation in the meridional velocity, and about a 11-year difference between the phases of the corresponding variations in the northern and the southern hemispheres. In addition, our analysis also indicates the following: (i) the existence of a considerable difference (about 180°) between the phases of the solar-cycle variations in the latitude-gradient terms of the northern and the southern hemispheres’ rotations; (ii) the existence of correlation (good in the northern hemisphere and weak in the southern hemisphere) between the mean solar-cycle variations of meridional flow and the latitude-gradient term of solar rotation; (iii) in the northern hemisphere, the cycle-to-cycle variation of the mean meridional velocity leads that of the equatorial rotation rate by about 11 years, and the corresponding variations have approximately the same phase in the southern hemisphere; and (iv) the directions of the mean meridional velocity is largely toward the pole in the longer sunspot cycles and largely toward the equator in the shorter cycles.  相似文献

Among all the signatures of solar ejecta in interplanetary space, magnetic clouds are particularly interesting. We have shown that they are associated with solar mass ejections that involve not only coronal heights, but also chromospheric heights and so, they are almost always associated with low-altitude solar activity such as H flares or filament eruptions. As a magnetic cloud is a very large structure, and not all the ejecta found in the interplanetary medium are clouds, it is interesting to investigate the characteristics of the large-scale coronal magnetic structures in the regions where the activity leading to a cloud takes place. In this paper we use Hoeksema's potential field model of the solar magnetosphere to obtain the magnetic structure of the site of the solar events associated with 35 interplanetary magnetic clouds. The position of the related solar activity was determined from the location of the near-surface solar explosive events (flares and filament eruptions) associated with each cloud, obtained in our previous study. We find that the solar activity associated with interplanetary magnetic clouds occurs in regions of low-altitude, magnetically closed structures lying between higher helmets, or between the highest helmets and coronal holes, where the magnetic field lines are longitudinally oriented.  相似文献

Comparing Solar Minimum 23/24 with Historical Solar Wind Records at 1 AU   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Based on the variations of sunspot numbers, we choose a 1-year interval at each solar minimum from the beginning of the acquisition of solar wind measurements in the ecliptic plane and at 1 AU. We take the period of July 2008??C?June 2009 to represent the solar minimum between Solar Cycles 23 and 24. In comparison with the previous three minima, this solar minimum has the slowest, least dense, and coolest solar wind, and the weakest magnetic field. As a result, the solar wind dynamic pressure, dawn?Cdusk electric field, and geomagnetic activity during this minimum are the weakest among the four minima. The weakening trend had already appeared during solar minimum 22/23, and it may continue into the next solar minimum. During this minimum, the galactic cosmic ray intensity reached the highest level in the space age, while the number of solar energetic proton events and the ground level enhancement events were the least. Using solar wind measurements near the Earth over 1995??C?2009, we have surveyed and characterized the large-scale solar wind structures, including fast-slow stream interaction regions (SIRs), interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs), and interplanetary shocks. Their solar cycle variations over the 15 years are studied comprehensively. In contrast with the previous minimum, we find that there are more SIRs and they recur more often during this minimum, probably because more low- and mid-latitude coronal holes and active regions emerged due to the weaker solar polar field than during the previous minimum. There are more shocks during this solar minimum, probably caused by the slower fast magnetosonic speed of the solar wind. The SIRs, ICMEs, and shocks during this minimum are generally weaker than during the previous minimum, but did not change as much as did the properties of the undisturbed solar wind.  相似文献

In view of the recently discovered time variations in rotation velocity within the solar differentially rotating tachocline (Howe et al. 2000), we study conditions for the equilibrium and excitation of motions in nonrigidly rotating magnetized layers of the radiative zones located near the boundaries of the convection zone. The emphasis is on the possible relationship between quasi-periodic tachocline pulsations and the generation of a nonaxisymmetric magnetic field in the convection zone. This field generation is studied under the assumption that it results from a reduction in the expenditure of energy on convective heat transport. The (antisymmetric about the equator) field is shown to increase in strength if there are both a radial gradient in angular velocity and steady-state axisymmetric meridional circulation of matter. The sense of circulation is assumed to change (causing the sign of the generated field to change) after the maximum permissible field strength is reached. This is apparently attributable to the excitation of the corresponding turbulent viscosity of the medium. It is also important that the cyclic field variations under discussion are accompanied by variations in solar-type dipole magnetic field.  相似文献

We compare the shape and position of some plasma formations visible in the polar corona with the cyclic evolution of the global magnetic field. The first type of object is polar crown prominences. A two-fold decrease of the height of polar crown prominences was found during their poleward migration from the middle latitudes to the poles before a polar magnetic field reversal. The effect could be assigned to a decrease of the magnetic field scale. The second type of object is the polar plumes, ray like structures that follow magnetic field lines. Tangents to polar ray structures are usually crossed near some point, “a magnetic focus,” below the surface. The distance q between the focus and the center of the solar disk changes from the maximum value about 0.65 R at solar minimum activity to the minimum value about 0.45 R at solar maximum. At first glance this behaviour seems to be contrary to the dynamics of spherical harmonics of the global magnetic field throughout a cycle. We believe that the problem could be resolved if one takes into account not only scale changes in the global magnetic field but also the phase difference in the cyclic variations of large-scale and small-scale components of the global field.  相似文献

By using the sunspot time series as a proxy, we have made a detailed analysis of the mean solar magnetic field over the last two and half centuries, by means of a reconstruction of its phase space. We find evidence of a long-term trend variation of some of the solar physical processes (over a few decades) that might be responsible for the apparent erratic behaviour of the solar magnetic cycle. The analysis is done by means of a careful study of the axisymmetric dynamo model equations, where we show that the temporal counterpart of the magnetic field can be described by a self-regulated two-dimensional dynamic system, usually known as a Van der Pol–Duffing oscillator. Our results suggest that during the last two and half centuries, the velocity of the meridional flow, v p, and the efficiency of the α mechanism responsible for the conversion of toroidal magnetic field into poloidal magnetic field might have suffered variations that can explain the observed variability in the solar cycle.  相似文献

A general circulation model is used to evaluate changes to the circulation and dust transport in the martian atmosphere for a range of past orbital conditions. A dust transport scheme, including parameterized dust lifting, is incorporated within the model to enable passive or radiatively active dust transport. The focus is on changes which relate to surface features, as these may potentially be verified by observations. Obliquity variations have the largest impact, as they affect the latitudinal distribution of solar heating. At low obliquities permanent CO2 ice caps form at both poles, lowering mean surface pressures. At higher obliquities, solar insolation peaks at higher summer latitudes near solstice, producing a stronger, broader meridional circulation and a larger seasonal CO2 ice cap in winter. Near-surface winds associated with the main meridional circulation intensify and extend polewards, with changes in cap edge position also affecting the flow. Hence the model predicts significant changes in surface wind directions as well as magnitudes. Dust lifting by wind stress increases with obliquity as the meridional circulation and associated near-surface winds strengthen. If active dust transport is used, then lifting rates increase further in response to the larger atmospheric dust opacities (hence circulation) produced. Dust lifting by dust devils increases more gradually with obliquity, having a weaker link to the meridional circulation. The primary effect of varying eccentricity is to change the impact of varying the areocentric longitude of perihelion, l, which determines when the solar forcing is strongest. The atmospheric circulation is stronger when l aligns with solstice rather than equinox, and there is also a bias from the martian topography, resulting in the strongest circulations when perihelion is at northern winter solstice. Net dust accumulation depends on both lifting and deposition. Dust which has been well mixed within the atmosphere is deposited preferentially over high topography. For wind stress lifting, the combination produces peak net removal within western boundary currents and southern midlatitude bands, and net accumulation concentrated in Arabia and Tharsis. In active dust transport experiments, dust is also scoured from northern midlatitudes during winter, further confining peak accumulation to equatorial regions. As obliquity increases, polar accumulation rates increase for wind stress lifting and are largest for high eccentricities when perihelion occurs during northern winter. For dust devil lifting, polar accumulation rates increase (though less rapidly) with obliquity above o=25°, but increase with decreasing obliquity below this, thus polar dust accumulation at low obliquities may be increasingly due to dust lifted by dust devils. For all cases discussed, the pole receiving most dust shifts from north to south as obliquity is increased.  相似文献

The Sun’s large-scale external field is formed through the emergence of magnetic flux in active regions and its subsequent dispersal over the solar surface by differential rotation, supergranular convection, and meridional flow. The observed evolution of the polar fields and open flux (or interplanetary field) during recent solar cycles can be reproduced by assuming a supergranular diffusion rate of 500 – 600 km2 s−1 and a poleward flow speed of 10 –20 m s−1. The nonaxisymmetric component of the large-scale field decays on the flow timescale of ∼1 yr and must be continually regenerated by new sunspot activity. Stochastic fluctuations in the longitudinal distribution of active regions can produce large peaks in the Sun’s equatorial dipole moment and in the interplanetary field strength during the declining phase of the cycle; by the same token, they can lead to sudden weakenings of the large-scale field near sunspot maximum (Gnevyshev gaps). Flux transport simulations over many solar cycles suggest that the meridional flow speed is correlated with cycle amplitude, with the flow being slower during less active cycles.  相似文献
