We study the temporal intensity variations of Mgib bright features and investigate the corresponding Hα velocity pattern. The network bright features are well visible in the continuum, in images averaged over the duration of the observations (130 min). We detected `flashing' bright features, which appear and disappear within two to five minutes, while the rest of the bright features undergo small variations of either their shape and/or their intensity. A power spectrum analysis reveals a 10-min oscillation for approximately half of the stable bright features. The 5-min oscillations are detected mainly at the network boundaries, where stable bright features are located, while 3-min oscillations coincide with few bright features, but are also quite intense inside the network cells. The majority of bright features are associated with Hα downflows. The downflow is very intense at the location of `flashing' bright features.  相似文献

Three theories have been proposed to explain the morphology of large-scale topographic features seen in the Martian polar laminated terrain. These features, which are subcircular in planimetric form, appear as dark bands in wide-angle Mariner 9 frames of the polar cap. Two of the theories (by Sagan and Murray) suggest that the features are constructional, built up through deformation of thick CO2 layers or built through localized deposition of ice and dust. Another theory (Cutts) suggests the features are channels and escarpments cut into a pre-existing, featureless, layered plateau. The constructional theories suggest that the features were formed sequentially while the erosive theory suggests formation was more or less simultaneous. An experiment was performed to test whether it was possible to discern the relative age of the features.It was assumed that if the features are constructional, continued exposure to erosional processes would change their planimetric form with time. Murray has postulated which features are oldest and which are youngest. It was found, however, that the supposed oldest features were statistically neither significantly more nor less irregular than the supposed youngest escarpments.This evidence has led to the conclusion that the features were probably carved nearly simultaneously into a previously deposited, featureless, stratified plateau rather than being constructed sequentially.  相似文献

We report on observations of Neptune from the 10-meter W.M. Keck II Telescope on June 17-18 (UT) 2000 and August 2-3 (UT) 2002 using the adaptive optics (AO) system to obtain a spatial resolution of 0.06 arcseconds. With this spatial resolution we can obtain spectra of individual bright features on the disk of Neptune in a filter centered near 2 microns. The use of a gas-only, simple reflecting layer radiative transfer model allows us to estimate the best fit altitudes of 18 bright features seen on these 4 nights and to set a constraint on the fraction of hydrogen in ortho/para equilibrium. On these nights there were three main types of features observed: northern hemisphere features in the range from +30 to −45 degrees; southern hemisphere features in the range from −30 to −50 degrees; and small southern features at −70 degrees. We find that the altitudes of the northern features are in the range from 0.023-0.064 bar, which places them in Neptune's stratosphere. Southern features at −30 to −50 degrees are mainly at altitudes from 0.10 to 0.14 bars. The small features at −70 degrees are somewhat deeper in the upper troposphere, at 0.17 and 0.27 bars. This pattern of features located at higher altitudes in the northern hemisphere and lower altitudes in the south has also been noted by previous observers. The best fits for all the observed spectra give a value of 1.0 for the fraction of hydrogen in ortho/para equilibrium; the value of the helium fraction is less well constrained by the data at 0.24. We suggest that the southern mid-latitude features are methane haze circulated up from below, while the −70° features may be isolated areas of upwelling in a general area of subsidence. Northern bright features may be due to subsidence of stratospheric haze material rather than upwelling and condensation of methane gas. We suggest that convection efficiently transports methane ice clouds to the tropopause in the Southern mid latitudes and thus plays a key role in the stratospheric haze production cycle.  相似文献

The time variation and latitude dependence of the solar rotation are found using observational data on Hα filaments and compact magnetic features with different polarities during solar activity cycles 20 and 21 (1966–1985). Statistical analysis of the observational data shows that there is a north–south asymmetry in the rotation, both for the Hα filaments and for compact magnetic features (structures) with negative and positive polarities. The N-S asymmetry in the differential rotation of the Hα filaments and the compact magnetic features with both polarities shows up quite distinctly in solar activity cycles 20 and 21, but the asymmetry for the compact magnetic features with positive polarity is comparatively lower in cycle 21. The confidence level is lower the compact magnetic features with positive polarity than for the compact magnetic features with negative polarity.  相似文献

受大量射频干扰信号影响, 快速从海量观测数据中准确识别出单脉冲信号已成为天文数据处理的一项重要任务, 而设计和提取有效数据特征, 是利用机器学习进行单脉冲信号高效识别的决定因素. 针对如何选择最优特征, 进而提升单脉冲信号的分类精度这一关键问题, 设计了面向单脉冲信号分类的集成特征选择方法. 方法首先混合单脉冲信号的参数特征、统计特征和抽象特征, 然后分别利用5种单一特征选择方法选出各自的最优特征集, 最后利用贪心策略对5种单一方法获取的最优特征集进行集成筛选, 获取最优集成特征集. 实验表明, 最优特征集合既包含统计特征也包含抽象特征. 在相同特征数量下, 利用集成特征选择比单一特征选择能获得更高的模型精度, 可使F1值最高提升1.8%. 在海量数据背景下, 集成特征选择对减少特征数量、提升分类性能和加快数据处理速度具有重要作用.  相似文献

High albedo features are identified in association with barchan dunes in an equatorial inter-crater dune field on Mars using images from the MRO mission. This paper describes the morphometric properties of these features and their association with the present barchan dune field. We propose that these features are cemented aeolian deposits that form at the foot of the dune avalanche face. A possible terrestrial analog exists at White Sands National Monument, in south-central New Mexico, USA. The presence of these features suggests past episodes of dune migration in inter-crater dunefields and liquid water in the near sub-surface in sufficient quantity to cause the cementation of aeolian dune sediment.  相似文献

We investigate the utility of a variety of features in performing morphological galaxy classification using back-propagation neural network classifiers based on a sample of 805 galaxies classified by Naim et al. We derive a total of 22 features from each galaxy image and use these as inputs to a neural network trained using back-propagation. The morphological types are subdivided into two to seven groups, and the relevance of each of the features is examined for each grouping. We use the magnitude of the regularization parameter for each input to determine whether a feature can be eliminated. We then prune the input features of the network, typically down to four features. We examine a number of methods of assessing the performance of the network and determine which works best for our task.  相似文献

Europa's surface exhibits numerous small dome-like and lobate features, some of which have been attributed to fluid emplacement of ice or slush on the surface. We perform numerical simulations of non-Newtonian flows to assess the physical conditions required for these features to result from viscous flows. Our simulations indicate that the morphology of an ice flow on Europa will be, at least partially, influenced by pre-existing topography unless the thickness of the flow exceeds that of the underlying topography by at least an order of magnitude. Three classes of features can be identified on Europa. First, some (possibly most) putative flow-like features exhibit no influence from the pre-existing topography such as ridges, although their thicknesses are generally on the same order as those of ridges. Therefore, flow processes probably cannot explain the formation of these features. Second, some observed features show modest influence from the underlying topography. These might be explained by ice flows with wide ranges of parameters (ice temperatures >230 K, effusion rates >107 m3 year−1, and a wide range of grain sizes), although surface uplift (e.g., by diapirism) and in situ disaggregation provide an equally compelling explanation. Third, several observed features are completely confined by pre-existing topographic structures on at least one side; these are the best known candidates for flow features on Europa. If these features resulted from solid-ice flows, then temperatures >260 K and grain sizes <2 μm are required. Such small grain sizes seem unlikely; low-viscosity flows such as ice slurries or brines provide a better explanation for these features. Our results provide theoretical support for the view that many of Europa's lobate features have not resulted from solid-ice flows.  相似文献

This paper presents the study of normalized north–south asymmetry, cumulative normalized north–south asymmetry and cumulative difference indices of sunspot areas, solar active prominences (at total, low (?40°) and high (?50°) latitudes) and Hα solar flares from 1964 to 2008 spanning the solar cycles 20–23. Three different statistical methods are used to obtain the asymmetric behavior of different solar activity features. Hemispherical distribution of activity features shows the dominance of activities in northern hemisphere for solar cycle 20 and in southern hemisphere for solar cycles 21–23 excluding solar active prominences at high latitudes. Cumulative difference index of solar activity features in each solar cycle is observed at the maximum of the respective solar cycle suggesting a cyclic behavior of approximately one solar cycle length. Asymmetric behavior of all activity features except solar active prominences at high latitudes hints at the long term periodic trend of eight solar cycles. North–south asymmetries of SAP (H) express the specific behavior of solar activity at high solar latitudes and its behavior in long-time scale is distinctly opposite to those of other activity features. Our results show that in most cases the asymmetry is statistically highly significant meaning thereby that the asymmetries are real features in the N–S distribution of solar activity features.  相似文献

Maps of Jupiter at 5 um provide detailed information about the complex of emission features at this wavelength. Previous indications of a correlation between infrared sources and visual features are confirmed with a few significant exceptions. The behavior of Jupiter at 5 um is compared with that of other bodies in the outer solar system. Recent observations indicate emission features on Jupiter at other infrared wavelengths.  相似文献

A location of the Viking 1 Lander on the surface of Mars has been determined by correlating topographic features in the lander pictures with similar features in the Viking orbiter pictures. Radio tracking data narrowed the area of search for correlating orbiter and lander features and an area was found on the orbiter pictures in which there is good agreement with topographic features on the lander pictures. This location, when plotted on the 1:250,000 scale photomosaic of the Yorktown Region of Mars (U.S. Geological Survey, 1977) is at 22.487°N latitude and 48.041°W longitude.  相似文献

High-resolution MDI magnetograms are used to study the pattern of moving magnetic inhomogeneities in sunspots. We examine the inward and outward moving features in sunspots. The velocity of these features is small in the umbra while it is about 0.5 km s–1 in the outer penumbra. The inward and outward moving features may be the possible origin for the long-term fluctuations of magnetic field strength in sunspots.  相似文献

We analyze and interpret the RXTE/ASM X-ray light curves for the close binary system Her X-1/HZ Her obtained from February 1996 to September 2004. Some of the features found previously in the averaged X-ray light curves are confirmed by the new RXTE/ASM data. In particular, the anomalous dips and post-eclipse recoveries in two successive orbits in the short-on state are clearly distinguishable and are stable features of the X-ray light curves. We argue that to account for these features, the tilt of the accretion disk to the orbital plane must be assumed to change with phase of the 35-day period. We present a numerical model that can reproduce the observed features of the light curves.  相似文献

We present evidence for a correlation between features observed in simultaneous infrared (8 to 14 μm) and ultraviolet (0.36 μm) images obtained during Venus' 1975 and 1977 apparitions. The sense of the observed correlation is such that bright uv markings correspond to bright (warm) ir features, and similarly, dark uv markings correspond to dark (cool) ir features.  相似文献

The presence of pingos on Mars has been hypothesized since the period of the Viking mission. In fact, a diverse range of pingo-like features has been found at various martian sites including Elysium, Chryse and Utopia Planitiae in the northern lowlands. Due to the morphology and the geological setting, some of those features were interpreted in different ways, creating some controversies, as happened in Athabasca Valles. This reflects the complexity of interpreting these features by remote sensing and multiple plausible interpretations of the same feature. With the objective of identifying new possible pingos or rootless cones on Mars, we selected a study area in Utopia Planitia (10-55° N, 210-260° W) where the presence of both features is possible due to its geological history (volcanic and hydrological). We analyzed more than 2100 Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC)-narrow angle images in addition to Viking, Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS), and High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) images, together with Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA)-derived Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) with a Geographic Information System (GIS). We found in 94 MOC-narrow angle images dome, cone, and ring-shaped features. We analyzed them from morphological and morphometrical points of view in order to compare them with relevant features on Mars and Earth. We tested different possible origins for those features following the approach of multiple working hypotheses. We conclude that the dome, cone, and ring-shaped features could be pingos, which is in agreement with their geological settings. Regarding the driving heat source for the formation of the purported pingos, we propose the existence of a heat source, possibly a magma chamber, underneath the surface of the Utopia basin. Together with possible climatic shifts, the past activities of the heat source may have caused melting of ground ice. The pingo growth due to freezing of the water would have occurred during the following cold climatic conditions.  相似文献

Abstract— Spectroscopic measurement and analysis of Martian meteorites provide important information about the mineralogy of Mars, as well as necessary ground-truths for deconvolving remote sensing spectra of the Martian surface rocks. The spectroscopic properties of particulate ALH 84001 from 0.3 to 25 μm correctly identify low-Ca pyroxene as the dominant mineralogy. Absorption bands due to electronic transitions of ferrous iron are observed at 0.94 and 1.97 μm that are typical for low-Ca pyroxene. A strong, broad water band is observed near 3 μm that is characteristic of the water band typically associated with pyroxenes. Weaker features near 4.8, 5.2 and 6.2 μm are characteristic of particulate low-Ca pyroxene and can be distinguished readily from the features due to high-Ca pyroxene and other silicate minerals. The reflectance minimum occurs near 8.6 μm for the ALH 84001 powder, which is more consistent with high-Ca pyroxene and augite than low-Ca pyroxene. The dominant mid-infrared (IR) spectral features for the ALH 84001 powder are observed near 9 and 19.5 μm; however, there are multiple features in this region. These mid-IR features are generally characteristic of low-Ca pyroxene but cannot be explained by low-Ca pyroxene alone. Spectral features from 2.5–5 μm are typically associated with water, organics and carbonates and have been studied in spectra of the ALH 84001, split 92 powder and ALH 84001, splits 92 and 271 chip surfaces. Weak features have been identified near 3.5 and 4 μm that are assigned to organic material and carbonates. Another feature is observed at 4.27 μm in many surface spots and in the powder but has not yet been uniquely identified. Spectroscopic identification of minor organic and carbonate components in this probable piece of Mars suggests that detection of small amounts of organics and carbonates in the Martian surface regolith would also be possible using visible-infrared hyperspectral analyses. Laboratory spectroscopic analysis of Martian meteorites provides a unique opportunity to identify the spectral features of minerals and other components while they are embedded in their natural medium.  相似文献

On Earth, glacial and periglacial features are common in areas of cold climate. On Mars, the temperature of the present-day surface is appropriate for permafrost, and the presence of water is suspected from data relating to the outgassing of the planet, from remote-sensing measurements over the polar caps and elsewhere on the Martian surface, and from recognition of fluvial morphological features such as channels. These observations and the possibility that ice could be in equilibrium with the atmosphere in the high latitudes north and south of ±40° latitude suggest that glacial and periglacial features should exist on the planet. Morphological studies based mainly on Viking pictures indicate many features that can be attributed to the action of ice. Among these features are extensive talus aprons; debris avalanches; flows that resemble glaciers or rock glaciers; ridges that look like moraines; various types of patterned ground, scalloped scarps, and chaotically collapsed terrain that could be attributed to thermokarst processes; and landforms that may reflect the interaction of volcanism and ice.  相似文献

We present a new technique for the rapid, automatic identification of solar features on full-disk photometric images. The technique permits the detection of features whose contrasts are only slightly above the noise level. Contrast and contiguity criteria are used to identify pixels belonging to an individual feature. The criteria used are simple and objective, and do not require one to guess at the contrast distribution of the features. Comparison of Caii K images with magnetograms shows excellent agreement between the identified features and observed magnetic features. In addition, we can now reliably identify faculae on continuum images. Since this technique can be rapidly applied to a large set of images, it allows us to compile a database of the physical and photometric properties of individual solar features.  相似文献

The idea that some of the unusual features in the X-ray spectra of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are due to the steep X-ray continuum is tested by comparing photoionization model calculations with various observed properties of Seyfert 1 galaxies. A meaningful comparison must involve the careful use of the “right” X-ray ionization parameter, designated here U(oxygen). When this is done, it is found that the strength of the continuum absorption features is insensitive to the exact slope of the 0.1–50 keV continuum. It is also shown that the complex of iron L-shell lines near 1 keV can produce strong absorption and emission features, depending on the gas distribution and line widths. While this may explain some unusual X-ray features in AGN, the predicted intensity of the features do not distinguish NLS1s from broader line sources. Finally, acceleration of highly ionized gas, by X-ray radiation pressure, is also not sensitive to the exact slope of the X-ray continuum.  相似文献

Observations of reversed-polarity features in the chromosphere as well as in the photosphere in the form of magnetic gulfs or islands of opposite polarity have been reported recently. In this paper, we present a possible explanation for the appearance of reversed-polarity features observed in the chromospheric magnetograms of the NOAA AR 7321 observed during October 25–27, 1992. It is suggested that the large-scale reversed-polarity features may occur due to the twisting of the smaller-scale magnetic flux tubes in the layer between the photosphere and the chromosphere.  相似文献
