We studied the morphology and spatial distribution of loops in an active region, using coordinated observations obtained with both the S082A XUV spectroheliograph and the S056 grazingincidence X-ray telescope on Skylab. The active region loops in the temperature range 5 × 105 –3 × 106 K fall basically into two distinctive groups: the hot loops with temperatures 2–3 × 106 K as observed in coronal lines and X-rays, and the relatively cool loops with temperature 5 × 105 –1 × 106 K as observed in transition-zone lines (Ne vii, Mg ix). The brightest hot coronal loops in the active region are mostly low-lying, compact, closely-packed, and show greater stability than the transition-zone loops, which are fewer in number, large, and slender. The observed aspect ratio of the hot coronal loops is in the range of 0.1 and 0.2, which are almost two orders of magnitude larger than those for the Ne vii loops. Brief discussion of the MHD stability of the loops in terms of the aspect ratio is presented.  相似文献

OSO-IV observations of the equatorial limb brightening of XUV resonance lines of Nv, O vi, Ne viii, Mg x and Si xii are interpreted with a modified version of a coronal model developed by Dupree and Goldberg (1967). Good agreement is obtained between the observed limb brightening and that predicted by the model. The sensitivity of the predicted limb-brightening curves to changes in parameters describing the model is discussed. Coronal abundances for N, O, Ne, Mg, and Si are obtained.  相似文献

Line intensity ratios of NeVI lines with respect to a resonance line of MgVI have been considered for electron density and temperature determinations within the chromosphere-corona transition region. The electron pressure within the transition region has been assumed to be constant. In addition, these ratios would enable us to estimate the relative element abundances of neon to magnesium. An attempt has been made to explain the extreme ultraviolet intensities of NeVI and MgVI lines as observed by ATM ultraviolet spectrometer. The observed intensities correspond to the average quiet-Sun conditions near solar minimum. Theoretical intensities for NeVI and MgVI lines have been computed using a model solar atmosphere. Theoretical intensities obtained by using the values 3.98 × 10–5 and 3.16 × 10–5 for element abundance of Ne and Mg, respectively, seem to agree well with the expected intensities. The agreement between some of the expected and computed intensities suggests the need for future observations at higher spectral resolutions to resolve difficulties arising out of blending due to two or more lines.  相似文献

We discuss the life-story of a transequatorial loop system which interconnected the newly born active region McMath 12474 with the old region 12472. The loop system was probably born through reconnection accomplished 1.5 to 5 days after the birth of 12474 and the loops were observed in soft X-rays for at least 1.5 days. Transient sharpenings of the interconnection and a striking brightening of the whole loop system for about 6 hr appear to be caused by magnetic field variations in the region 12474. A flare might have been related to the brightening, but only in an indirect way: the same emerging flux could have triggered the flare and at the same time strengthened the magnetic field at the foot-points of the loops. Electron temperature in the loop system, equal to 2.1 × 106 K in its quiet phase, increased to 3.1 × 106 K during the brightening. Electron density in the loop system was 1.3 × 109 cm–3 and it could be estimated to 7 × 108 cm–3 prior to the brightening. During the brightening the loops became twisted. There was no obvious effect whatsoever of the activity in 12474 upon the in erconnected old region. The final decay of the loop system reflected the decay of magnetic field in the region 12474.  相似文献

Abstract— We used the ultraviolet to visible spectrometers onboard the midcourse space experiment to obtain the first ultraviolet spectral measurements of a bright meteor during the 1997 Leonid shower. The meteor was most likely a Leonid with a brightness of about‐2 magnitude at 100 km altitude. In the region between 251 and 310 nm, the two strongest emission lines are from neutral and ionized magnesium. Ionized Ca lines, indicative of a hot T ? 10 000 K plasma, are not detected. The Mg and Mg+ line intensity ratio alone does not yield the ionization temperature, which can be determined only by assuming the electron density. A typical air plasma temperature of T = 4400 K would imply a very high electron density: ne = 2.2 times 1018 m‐3, but at chondritic abundances of Fe/Mg and Si/Mg ? 1. For a more reasonable local‐thermodynamic‐equilibrium (LTE) air plasma electron density, the Mg and Mg+ line ratio implies a less than chondritic Fe/Mg = 0.06 abundance ratio and a cool non‐LTE T = 2830 K ionization temperature for the ablation vapor plasma. The present observations do not permit a choice between these alternatives. The new data provide also the first spectral confirmation of the presence of molecular OH and NO emission in meteor spectra.  相似文献

The differential flux and energy spectra of solar cosmic ray heavy ions of He, C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe were determined in the energy interval E = 3–30 MeV amu-1 for two large solar events of January 24, 1971 and September 1, 1971 in rocket flights made from Ft. Churchill. From these data the relative abundances and the abundance enhancement factors, ξ, relative to photospheric abundances were obtained for these elements. Similar results were obtained for a third event on August 4, 1972 from the available published data. Characteristic features of ξ vs nuclear charge dependences were deduced for five energy intervals. The energy dependence of ξ for He shows a moderate change by a factor of about 3, whereas for Fe, ξ shows a very dramatic decrease by a factor of 10–20 with increasing energy. It is inferred that these abundance enhancements of solar cosmic ray heavy ions at low energies seem to be related to their ionization states (Z *) and hence studies of Z * can give information on the important parameters such as temperature and density in the accelerating region in the Sun.  相似文献

Absolute intensities and wavelengths for 98 X-ray emission lines between 9 and 22.5 Å are reported. The active region spectra were obtained with three rocket-borne crystal spectrometers. Identifications are proposed for 62 of the lines and a model of the emitting plasma is constructed from the intensities of the strongest lines. The emission measure (N e 2 V) of the model peaks at 3 × 106 K with a value of 1.5 × 1047 cm?3 and decreases to 1046 cm?3 at 5 × 106 K. Effective oscill and collision strengths are calculated for the other transitions that are observed. The relative intensities of O viii and Ne ix give an oxygen : neon abundance ratio of 8 ∶ 1. The intensities of the satellite lines to helium-like lines are investigated and it is shown that these lines can be used with confidence in constructing active region models.  相似文献

Yohkoh and the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) jointly observed two brightenings in active region NOAA 7981 on 6 August 1996. Combining the UV data from CDS with information from the high time resolution coronal images obtained with the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) on Yohkoh, provides us with important information on the relationship between the transition region and corona. Our observations show that cool plasma (Te = 2.2 x 10-5 K) can lie at the same altitude as the hot coronal plasma (Te = 1–4 x 106 K). The lower temperature structure is not formed from the cooling of the hotter coronal loop. We are also able to observe a low temperature cut-off of Te = 1–4 x 106 K for a loop which repeatedly brightened over the period of approximately one day.  相似文献

Abstract— Measured Ne isotopes in samples of shergottite ALHA77005 show variations in 21Ne/22Ne ratios and 21Ne abundances that are consistent with the presence of two cosmogenic components: a component produced by nuclear interactions of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and a component produced at shallow shielding depths (~0–3 cm) by energetic solar flare protons (SCR). We suggest that the 21Ne/22Ne ratio generally can be used to distinguish between SCR and GCR components in many meteorite types. Analysis of cosmogenic Ne produced in chondrite mineral separates, eucrites, and anorthositic lunar rocks, all having diverse major element compositions, indicate that the GCR 21Ne/22Ne ratio increases modestly with relative Mg content. Data for hundreds of chondrite analyses suggest that SCR Ne is present in no more than a very small fraction of chondrites. Examination of literature data for other shergottites, however, indicate that all of these meteorites contain SCR Ne but that it is apparently absent in other SNC meteorites. The ubiquitous presence of SCR Ne in shergottites, in contrast to most other types of meteorites, suggests that the martian origin of shergottites gave them different orbital parameters compared to other meteorites. This in turn may have contributed to slower entry velocities and lesser surface ablation in the atmosphere or even to higher SCR production rates.  相似文献

K-band radio observations of comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) were conducted in March/April 1997 at the 100-m Telescope of the Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie. Emission was firmly detected from the five lowest metastable (J = K)inversion transitions of ammonia. Assuming a thermal distribution for the metastable states of NH3, we derive a rotational temperature of 104 ± 30 K and an ammonia production rate at perihelion of6.6 ± 1.3 × 1028 s-1.The updated ammonia-to-water abundance ratio is found to be of the order of 1.0%. We also report a marginal detection of the 616–523transition line of water at λ = 1.35 cm. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

An analysis and interpretation of reflected solar Lyman α intensity data acquired with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) implies an equatorially confined atmosphere with SO2 column densities ∼ 1–2 × 1016 cm-2. Poleward of 30° the SO2 density must decrease sharply reaching an asymptotic polar value of < 1015 cm-2 at 45° to achieve the observed 2 kR intensity peaks. The corresponding surface reflectivities must be either a constant 0.047 for higher equatorial SO2 or a variable reflectivity of 0.027 with lower SO2 densities at the equator increasing to a polar value of ∼ 0.05. The average residence time for an atmospheric SO2 molecule is ∼ 2–3 days for the canonical mass loading rate of the Io plasma torus = 1030 amu s-1. With atomic hydrogen in the atmosphere and corona constrained by the HST observations, it is estimated that a pickup proton density ratio of 0.25–0.4% can be sustained by a supply of Io plasma torus protons neutralized in Io's atmosphere/exosphere, if protons constitute 7% of the total torus ion density, which is close to the Chust et al. (1999) pickup proton density ratio and under the widely quoted 10% proton content of the torus. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The conditions for accurate electron density diagnostics in the solar transition region are discussed, and result shows that lines from Si?viii can provide an excellent tool for electron density diagnostics of the emitting plasma. For the Si?viii 1440.50 Å and 1445.75 Å lines, the principle of the electron density diagnostics is discussed for any intensity ratio. By the observed intensity ratio, the diagnostic results of the electron density for the quiet sun and the active region are calculated, and results indicate that in the quiet sun, the averaged electron density is \(\log (N_{e}) = 8.63\); while in the active region, the averaged density gets the maximum \(\log (N_{e}) = 8.86\) in the active region (B), and gets the minimum \(\log (N_{e}) = 8.38\) in the active region (E), where the electron density is in the unit of cm?3. Finally, the relationship of intensity ratio and electron density is discussed, in the case of lower and higher electron density limits. This discussion is significant in the electron density diagnostics, which will be important for study on coronal heating and acceleration of solar wind.  相似文献

The analysis of two active regions on the limb using observations from SOHO-CDS allows us to determine the electron density and temperature distribution of the coronal emission. We find that the active regions have hot cores (3×106 K) with larger cooler (106 K) loop structures extending above the limb. The electron number density, determined using the Si X diagnostic line ratio, is found to be highest in the active region core (greater than 2.3×109 cm–3). Electron number density values are determined for a range of spectral lines from different ions and are found to increase with temperature between 0.8 and 2.5×106 K. These results are consistent with recent models of enhanced heating along the compact core of active regions, where the magnetic field shear is strongest.  相似文献

Abstract— Previous studies have shown that the Kapoeta howardite, as well as several other meteorites, contains excess concentrations of cosmogenic Ne in the darkened, solar-irradiated phase compared to the light, non-irradiated phase. The two explanations offered for the nuclear production of these Ne excesses in the parent body regolith are either from galactic cosmic-ray proton (GCR) irradiation or from a greatly enhanced flux of energetic solar “cosmic-ray” protons (SCR), as compared to the recent solar flux. Combining new isotopic data we obtained on acid-etched, separated feldspar from Kapoeta light and dark phases with literature data, we show that the cosmogenic 21Ne/22Ne ratio of light phase feldspar (0.80) is consistent with only GCR irradiation in space for ~3 Ma. However, the 21Ne/22Ne ratio (0.68) derived for irradiation of dark phase feldspar in the Kapoeta regolith indicates that cosmogenic Ne was produced in roughly equal proportions from galactic and solar protons. Considering a simple model of an immature Kapoeta parent body regolith, the duration of this early galactic exposure was only ~3–6 Ma, which would be an upper limit to the solar exposure time of individual grains. Concentrations of cosmogenic 21Ne in pyroxene separates and of cosmogenic 126Xe in both feldspar and pyroxene are consistent with this interpretation. The near-surface irradiation time of individual grains in the Kapoeta regolith probably varied considerably due to regolith mixing to an average GCR irradiation depth of ~10 cm. Because of the very different depth scales for production of solar ~Fe tracks, SCR Ne, and GCR Ne, the actual regolith exposure times for average grains probably differed correspondingly. However, both the SCR 21Ne and solar track ages appear to be longer because of enhanced production by early solar activity. The SCR/GCR production ratio of 21Ne inferred from the Kapoeta data is larger by a at least a factor of 10 and possibly as much as a factor of ~50 compared to recent solar particle fluxes. Thus, this study indicates that our early Sun was much more active and emitted a substantially higher flux of energetic (>10 MeV/nucleon) protons.  相似文献

A composite sample of NIR-selected galaxies having extended multicolor coverage has been used to probe the cosmological evolution of the blue luminosity function and of the stellar mass function. The bright fraction of the sample has spectroscopic redshifts, and the remaining fraction well-calibrated photometric redshifts. The resulting blue luminosity function shows an increasing brightening with redshift respect to the local luminosity function. Hierarchical CDM models predictions are in agreement only at low and intermediate redshifts but fail to reproduce the observed brightening at high redshifts (z ∼ 2–3). This brightening marks the epoch where starburst activity triggered by galaxy interactions could be an important physical mechanism for the galaxy evolution. At the same time the NIR galaxy sample has been used to trace the evolution of the cosmological stellar mass density up to ∼3. A clear decrease of the average mass density is apparent with a fraction ∼15% of the local value at z ∼ 3. UV bright star-forming galaxies are substancial contributors to the evolution of the stellar mass density. Although these results are globally consistent with Λ–CDM scenarios, they tend to underestimate the mass density produced by more massive galaxies present at z > 2.  相似文献

We present millimeter-wave observations of HNCO, HC3N, SO, NH2CHO, H13CN, and H3O+ in comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp)obtained in February–April, 1997 with the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). HNCO, first detected at the CSO in comet C/1996B2 (Hyakutake), is securely confirmed in comet Hale-Bopp via observations of three rotational transitions. The derived abundance with respect to H2O is (4-13) × 10-4. HC3N, SO, and NH2CHO are detected for the first time in a comet. The fractional abundance of HC3N based on observations of three rotational lines is (1.9 ± 0.2) × 10-4. Four transitions of SO are detected and the derived fractional abundance, (2-8) ×10-3, is higher than the upper limits derived from UV observations of previous comets. Observations of NH2CHO imply a fractional abundance of (1-8) × 10-4. H3O is detected for the first time from the ground. The H13CN (3-2)transition is also detected and the derived HCN/H13CN abundance ratio is 90 ± 15, consistent with the terrestrial12C/13C ratio. In addition, a number of other molecular species are detected, including HNC, OCS, HCO+, CO+, and CN(the last two are first detections in a comet at radio wavelengths). The Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) onboard Hinode is the first solar telescope to obtain wide-slit spectral images that can be used for detecting Doppler flows in transition region and coronal lines on the Sun and to relate them to their surrounding small-scale dynamics. We select EIS lines covering the temperature range 6×104 to 2×106 K that give spectrally pure images of the Sun with the 40-arcsec slit. In these images Doppler shifts are seen as horizontal brightenings. Inside the image it is difficult to distinguish shifts from horizontal structures but emission beyond the image edge can be unambiguously identified as a line shift in several lines separated from others on their blue or red side by more than the width of the spectrometer slit (40 pixels). In the blue wing of He ii, we find a large number of events with properties (size and lifetime) similar to the well-studied explosive events seen in the ultraviolet spectral range. Comparison with X-Ray Telescope (XRT) images shows many Doppler shift events at the footpoints of small X-ray loops. The most spectacular event observed showed a strong blue shift in the transition region and lower corona lines from a small X-ray spot that lasted less than 7 min. The emission appears to be near a cool coronal loop connecting an X-ray bright point to an adjacent region of quiet Sun. The width of the emission implies a line-of-sight velocity of 220 km s−1. In addition, we show an example of an Fe xv shift with a velocity of about 120 km s−1, coming from what looks like a narrow loop leg connecting a small X-ray brightening to a larger region of X-ray emission.  相似文献

We present high spatial resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A with the Chandra observations. The X-ray emitting region of this remnant was divided into 38 × 34 pixels of 10″× 10″ each. Spectra of 960 pixels were created and fitted with an absorbed two component non-equilibrium ionization model. From the results of the spectral analysis we obtained maps of absorbing column density, temperatures, ionization ages, and the abundances of Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ca and Fe. The Si, S and possibly Ca abundance maps show obvious jet structures, while Fe does not follow the jet but seems to be distributed perpendicular to it. The abundances of Si, S and Ca show tight correlations between one another over a range of about two dex. This suggests that they are ejecta from explosive Oburning and incomplete Si-buming. Meanwhile, the Ne abundance is well correlated with that of Mg, indicating them to be the ashes of explosive C/Ne burning. The Fe abundance is positively correlated with that of Si when the latter is lower than 3 times the solar value, and is negatively correlated when higher. We suggest that such a two phase correlation is due to the different ways in which Fe was synthesized.  相似文献

Repeated raster images of solar active regions taken at the line centers of the Si iv and C iv resonance lines using the University of Colorado (CU) ultraviolet spectrometer aboard OSO-8 reveal dramatic transient brightenings of up to factors of 10. These brightenings last several minutes and frequently show a repetitive character. Inspection of simultaneous H flare patrol records show that these transition zone events are often associated with subflare-like brightenings in the chromosphere. These observations indicate that direct excitation or heating of material already at transition zone temperatures caused by non-thermal particle streams is inadequate to explain the degree of brightening of these lines. The measurements suggest that some process that enhances density of material at 105 K is occurring during these events.  相似文献

Abstract— Core samples were obtained from various locations of the ~ 105-kg Chico, NM, L6 chondrite in order to study the effects of large shielding on the production rates of cosmic-ray-produced nuclides. Relations between measured abundances of cosmogenic nuclides (10Be, 26Al, and stable isotopes of He, Ne, and Ar) and the cosmogenic 22Ne/21Ne ratio were determined and compared with recent model predictions of production rates. The measured 22Ne/21Ne ratios (1.06-1.08) and significant variations observed in concentrations of cosmogenic 21Ne and 3He suggest an ~40-cm shielding gradient across Chico and irradiation within a large object (> 100-cm radius). Noble gas data indicate that Chico experienced greater shielding than chondrites Knyahinya or Keyes and similar to Jilin. Values of 10Be (average = 20.7 dpm/kg) and 26Al (average = 71.1 dpm/kg) are nearly constant, however, and show no correlation with either 22Ne/21Ne or 21Ne. Activities of 10Be and 26Al suggest irradiation in a smaller object (~40–80 cm radius). The 26Al activity and the 26Al/10Be ratio (average value = 3.42) are both significantly larger than values for most other chondrites. These results could indicate a two-stage irradiation with t1 ~ 104 Ma and t2 ~ 4 Ma and a second-stage body the size of Knyahinya. The single stage, 10Be/21Ne exposure age for Chico is 65 Ma. The 22Ne/21Ne ratio apparently becomes insensitive to shielding for objects the size of Chico. No substantial evidence exists for chondrites with 22Ne/21Ne ratios significantly less than ~ 1.055.  相似文献
