This paper presents an adaptive hybrid algorithm to invert ocean acoustic field measurements for seabed geoacoustic parameters. The inversion combines a global search (simulated annealing) and a local method (downhill simplex), employing an adaptive approach to control the trade off between random variation and gradient-based information in the inversion. The result is an efficient and effective algorithm that successfully navigates challenging parameter spaces including large numbers of local minima, strongly correlated parameters, and a wide range of parameter sensitivities. The algorithm is applied to a set of benchmark test cases, which includes inversion of simulated measurements with and without noise, and cases where the model parameterization is known and where the parameterization most be determined as part of the inversion. For accurate data, the adaptive inversion often produces a model with a Bartlett mismatch lower than the numerical error of the propagation model used to compute the replica fields. For noisy synthetic data, the inversion produces a model with a mismatch that is lower than that for the true parameters. Comparison with previous inversions indicates that the adaptive hybrid method provides the best results to date for the benchmark cases  相似文献

Sonar performance predictions in shallow water are strongly dependent on good knowledge of the geoacoustic and scattering properties of the seabed. One technique to extract information about the bottom is to use a towed source and a towed horizontal array. This towed system has been shown to be applicable for characterizing the bottom properties locally by inversion of the acoustic signals received directly on the towed array at short ranges. The same towed system has also been applied to extract bottom properties from long-range reverberation data providing effective bottom properties over a large area. However, independent geoacoustic inversion of the short-range propagation and long-range reverberation data can introduce low sensitivity and uncertainty in the extracted bottom properties. An attempt to resolve this low sensitivity and ambiguity is made by a simultaneous geoacoustic inversion of short-range propagation and long-range reverberation data with the intention of constraining the possible solutions of the bottom properties.   相似文献

The broad-band acoustic characterization of the Hudson Canyon region off the New Jersey Continental Shelf is studied with an analysis of pressure time series generated by small explosive sources and recorded on a vertical line array (VLA). The average water depth is about 72 m and the average sound-speed profile (SSP) is downward-refracting over the midportions of the water column. The seabed is characterized by sediment layers possessing sand-like characteristics. The sound-speed structure of the water column and the seabed structure create distinguishing modal features in the impulse response in the 250-500-Hz hand. The details of the depth and range dependence of the time series on the VLA are sensitive to small perturbations of the structure of the upper layer of the SSP, the water depth, and the seabed structure. This sensitivity of the acoustic field is investigated using a broad-band range-dependent normal mode model called NAUTILUS. The representation of the spatial and temporal structure of the time series in terms of a modal structure reveals several unique effects of the SSP and the geoacoustic structure of the bottom on the group velocity of the modes over a large bandwidth. Individual modes can be identified in the measured data using direct data-simulation comparisons. Cross-correlation values between data and simulations in a 155-ms time window generally vary from 0.7 to 0.9 for sensors below the thermocline but are much smaller for sensors above the thermocline  相似文献

Acoustic propagation in shallow water is greatly dependent on the geoacoustic properties of the seabottom. This paper exploits this dependence for estimating geoacoustic sediment properties from the bottom acoustic returns of known signals received on a hydrophone line array. There are two major issues in this approach: one is the feasibility of acoustic inversion with a limited aperture line array, the other is related to the knowledge of the geometry of the experimental configuration. To test the feasibility of this approach, a 40-hydrophone-4-m spaced towed array together with a low-frequency acoustic source, was operated at a shallow water site in the Strait of Sicily. In order to estimate the array deformation in real time, it has been equipped with a set of nonacoustic positioning sensors (compasses, tilt-meters, pressure gauges). The acoustic data were inverted using two complementary approaches: a genetic algorithm (GA) like approach and a radial basis functions (RBF) inversion scheme. More traditional methods, based on core sampling, seismic survey and geophone data, together with Hamilton's regression curves, have also been employed on the same tracks, in order to provide a ground truth reference environment. The results of the experiment, can be summarized as follows: 1) the towed array movement is not negligible for the application considered and the use of positioning sensors are essential for a proper acoustic inversion, 2) the inversion with GA and RBF are in good qualitative agreement with the ground truth model, and 3) the GA scheme tends to have better stability properties. On the other hand, repeated in version of successive field measurements requires much less computational effort with RBF  相似文献

The characteristics of shallow-water reverberation are often controlled by scattering from the seabed. While scattering mechanisms are understood in general, the state-of-the-art falls far short of predicting the correct angular and frequency dependence of scattering in a given region. A series of acoustic and supporting geoacoustic measurements were conducted over a large area in the Straits of Sicily in order to study seabed scattering in a complex littoral environment. The hypothesis was that exploiting direct path reflection coefficient measurements, in conjunction with the scattering measurements, could help illuminate the underlying scattering mechanisms. The sediment at the seabed interface was found to be a fine silty clay with nearly uniform properties across the area. Notwithstanding this spatial homogeneity, 1-6-kHz reflection and scattering measurements showed significant spatial variability. The coupled reflection-scattering approach resolved this apparent discrepancy, revealing that the reflection and scattering processes are largely controlled by the sediment properties below, rather than at, the water sediment interface. Measurements at 3600 Hz show that site-to-site variability is in part controlled by the thickness of the silty-clay layer. Layers up to 10 m below the water sediment interface contribute to the scattering at 3600 Hz.  相似文献

This paper examines geoacoustic inversion over a range-dependent multiple-layer seabed using a towed acoustic source and towed horizontal array. The approach is based on combining the results of a series of short-range, range-independent inversions to form a range-dependent representation of the environment. The data were collected in the Strait of Sicily during the MAPEX 2000 experiment. Issues such as the resolvability of multilayer structure and the sensitivity of various geoacoustic parameters are investigated by inversion of simulated data and by comparison of the MAPEX 2000 inversion results to a high-resolution seismic profile and to sediment core measurements. It appears that two, and in some cases possibly three, sediment layers can be resolved.  相似文献

In many strategic shallow water areas, the geoacoustic properties of the sub-bottom are largely unknown. This paper demonstrates that inverse theory and measured data from a single hydrophone can be used to accurately deduce the geoacoustic properties of the sub-bottom, even when the initial background geoacoustic model is a highly inaccurate estimate. Since propagation in shallow water is very sensitive to the geoacoustic properties of the sub-bottom the inverse technique is a vitally important, practical, and inexpensive means to improve sonar performance prediction in a potentially hostile environment. To provide ground truth for the inverse technique, measured data collected during Project GEMINI were compared to the inverse solutions. Detailed, site-specific geoacoustic models were developed for two array locations and the finite-element parabolic equation (FEPE) model was used to estimate transmission loss (TL). The model estimates from FEPE compared well with the measured data and the detailed geoacoustic models were considered as “ground truth.” To test the efficacy of the technique, initial background geoacoustic models were constructed assuming no a priori information of the bottom. The resultant inverse solution was used to predict the geoacoustic properties at each of the sites. The final results were in excellent agreement with the measured data and the resulting TL estimates derived from the inverse technique were as good or better than the TL estimates obtained from the detailed, site-specific geoacoustic models  相似文献

A survey of received acoustic energy levels from a seismic profiler were performed in Long Beach Harbor, CA, for compliance with the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). In addition to direct acoustic measurements, a rapid geoacoustic inversion algorithm was applied to the data to estimate the sediment properties acoustically. This inversion algorithm has matching criteria based on time spread, range-frequency interference patterns, and the range dependence of transmission loss. Self-consistency was checked by comparing acoustic measurements with predictions based on the inversion. With an estimated geoacoustic profile, predictions of received levels as a function of position in the range-dependent environment of Long Beach Harbor were then performed.  相似文献

The asymmetric three-dimensional radiation pattern and resultant elastodynamic response of stress waves in a model comprising a compressible water column overlying a transversely isotropic seabed in which a time-harmonic source acts is theoretically investigated. The use of potential functions, the Hankel transform, and a Fourier series expansion are adopted to deal with the equations of motion for both media. Closed-form integral expressions are developed for the potentials and the stress/displacement components. The expressions and introduced procedure are sufficiently flexible to incorporate various types of source loads. To evaluate the field quantities, the residue method and a robust integration scheme are utilized to handle the poles and branch points within the integrand. Any possible number of dispersive propagation modes are taken into account in the integral evaluation. The deduced velocity dispersion curves depict the characteristics of the various modes. They also indicate the existing singular points (poles) for a specific dimensionless frequency and the surface wave type associated with each pole. Numerical results are presented for the hydrodynamic pressure and displacement in the liquid layer and stress and displacement components in the solid seabed due to distributed and concentrated source excitations. The formulation and the numerical scheme are valid for calculating the wavefield anywhere within the model including both far- and near-field effects. The sensitivity of the results to different parameters is also analyzed. Both analytical and numerical comparisons with existing solutions for simpler cases are made to confirm the validity of the results. The results are especially useful in seismic hazard assessment of submarine earthquakes, landslides, and tsunamis. They can also be extended to deal with the fluid-solid-structure interaction problems.  相似文献

An "equivalent transform method" for quantitatively evaluating the effect of water-column mismatch on geoacoustic inversions is presented. This method is based on the concept of error transferral from one medium to another and is derived from linear perturbative inverse theory. To illustrate the method, geoacoustic inversions using adiabatic mode data, including wave numbers, group velocities, and travel times, are considered. In the test cases, both linear and nonlinear internal waves are considered as the causes of the water-column mismatch, and the inversion errors due to the water-column mismatch in each case are discussed. In the case of linear internal waves, range-averaged inversion errors are largely eliminated at the full cycle distance of the internal wave; however, in the case of nonlinear internal waves, the range-averaged inversion errors are accumulated but scaled down with increasing range. Furthermore, the inversion errors produced by water-column mismatch will be large if the modes used for inversion are sensitive to the mismatch; for instance, using higher order modes might lead to increased error even though it would normally improve inversion results. Using lower frequency signal, which penetrates deeper into the bottom, extends the effective depth of the inversion solutions, but this also allows the water-column mismatch to transfer error into the deeper bottom

In the context of the recent Maritime Rapid Environmental Assessment/Blue Planet 2007 sea trial (MREA/BP07), this paper presents a range-resolving tomography method based on ensemble Kalman filtering of full-field acoustic measurements, dedicated to the monitoring of environmental parameters in coastal waters. The inverse problem is formulated in a state–space form wherein the time-varying sound-speed field (SSF) is assumed to follow a random walk with known statistics and the acoustic measurements are a nonlinear function of the SSF and the bottom properties. The state–space form enables a straightforward implementation of a nonlinear Kalman filter, leading to a data assimilation problem. Surface measurements augment the measurement vector to constrain the range-dependent structure of the SSF. Realistic scenarios of vertical slice shallow-water tomography experiments are simulated with an oceanic model, based on the MREA/BP07 experiment. Prior geoacoustic inversion on the same location gives the bottom acoustic properties that are input to the propagation model. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme enables the continuous tracking of the range-dependent SSF parameters and their associated uncertainties assimilating new measurements each hour. It is shown that ensemble methods are required to properly manage the nonlinearity of the model. The problem of the sensitivity to the vertical array (VA) configuration is also addressed.   相似文献

Matched-field inversion is used to, estimate geoacoustic properties from data obtained in an experiment with a vertical line array (VLA). The experiment was carried out using broad-band sources (shots) in water depths of about 200 m on the continental shelf off Vancouver Island. The data were processed to obtain spectral components of the field for frequencies near the bubble frequency for the shot. The ocean bottom in this region consists of a layer of mainly sandy sediments (about 100 m thick) overlying older consolidated material. Consequently, the inversion was designed to estimate the parameters of a two-layer elastic sediment model. In the inversion, an adaptive global search algorithm was used to investigate the multidimensional space of geoacoustic models in order to determine the set of values corresponding to the best replica field. Convergence is driven by adaptively guiding the search to regions of the parameter space associated with above-average values of the matched field correlation between the measured and replica fields. The geoacoustic profile estimated by the inversion consisted of a 125-m layer with compressional speed ~1700 m/s and shear speed ~400 m/s, overlying a layer with compressional speed ~1900 m/s. This model is consistent with the results from conventional seismic experiments carried out in the same region  相似文献

Reverberation measurements made by the SACLANT Undersea Research Centre at three shallow-water sites (130-190-m depth) are compared with each other and with estimates from the DREA normal-mode reverberation model OGOPOGO. The experiments over silt-clay and sand seabeds were conducted at slightly bistatic geometries (0.7-6.0-km source-receiver separation), using explosive sources detonated at mid-water depths. The signals were received on hydrophones of either a vertical or horizontal array and analyzed in one-tenth-decade frequency bands from 25 to 1000 Hz. The data are compared with each other to investigate the site differences and frequency dependencies, and with the estimates from the reverberation model OGOPOGO to interpret the data and to obtain a qualitative measure of the scattering. For modeling purposes, geoacoustic models of the seabed were assumed, and the reverberation data were fitted by adjusting the Lambert bottom scattering coefficients. Good model agreement was obtained with both individual hydrophone and data. Though somewhat sensitive to the geoacoustic the Lambert coefficients give a measure of the frequency dependence of the scattering. For the silt-clay bottom, the scattering is weak but is independent of frequency; for the sand bottoms, the scattering is stronger and increases with frequency. These results are compared with estimates from other experiments  相似文献
