Most of the optical light from AM Her systems is cyclotron radiation. Simple models for the spectrum and polarization are successful for some systems, but in others the spectrum rolls over more gently at high frequencies and is polarized over a wider range of frequencies than the models predict. This paper considers the emission from both the sides and top of the accretion column and the effects of oscillations in the shock height. These features lead to a slower roll over at high frequencies than is found in the simple models, but it is still not as flat as in some of the AM Her systems.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. Multiband observations of the AM Herculis-type binary CW1103+254 show significant circular polarization (13%) in the J band. Recently, a model with high temperature (kT20 keV) and small dimensionless plasma parameter (104) was suggested for the emitting region. However, it gives negligible polarization in the J band. In this paper, a method, in which the J band polarization and the peak frequency of the spectrum are taken into account, is used to determine T and . For the viewing angle =80° and the magnetic field B=30MG, we find that kT=5.0 keV and =106. The temperature of the emitting region is close to the value (kT=8.7 keV) derived for the region emitting cyclotron lines in VV Puppis. If these radiations arise from the post-shock regions, then these temperatures are significantly lower than those predicted by standard accretion models or the shock structure is inhomogenous and more complex than previously assumed.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. The statistical study of the individual light curves of magnetic close binary system AM Herculis obtained in 1978–1988 led to the following conclusions: (a) there is a dependence of the amplitude of brightness variations on the luminosity; (b) the shape of the phased light curves is statistically dependent on the luminosity; (c) the photometric period underwent cyclic changes, the phase of minimum is correlated with luminosity. These results confirm the main observational predictions of the swinging dipole model (Astrophys. Cyclotron waves in the solar wind near 1 AU with frequencies well below the electron cyclotron frequency and wavelengths much larger than the electron cyclotron radius but less than the proton cyclotron radius are considered. The cyclotron radii are defined from parallel thermal velocity of electron component and proton component with respect to the interplanetary magnetic field. No LH cyclotron waves are found to propagate for p < 0, where p 1 –T p/T p is the temperature anisotropy of the proton component with respect to the interplanetary magnetic field. The damping or growth of RH cyclotron waves is found to depend on the frequency range and the temperature anisotropy of the proton component. The RH cyclotron waves are damped in the frequency range r | p | p for p < 0, where p is the proton cyclotron frequency. RH cyclotron instabilities occur in the frequency range | p | p > r > | p | p /(1– r ) for p < 0. It is suggested, that effects of total reflection and refraction may appear sometimes in various objects on the Sun in connection with grazing incidence towards layers formed by magnetic fields and perhaps also by electrostatic double layers or shock waves. It seems possible that such effects may influence sometimes the contrast of bright structures as well as dark structures at selective wavelengths as well as in white light.  相似文献

Observational evidence of optical cyclotron emission from discrete regions on the highly magnetic white dwarf components of AM Herculis type binaries is presented on the basis of linear and circular polarimetry of EF Eri, AM Her, VV Pup, and V834 Cen. Solar 80 MHz emission recorded by the Culgoora radioheliograph over a number of years, no matter what its spectral type, has followed a persistent pattern. Emission with average polarization < 40%, even if bursty, shows constant polarization: the polarization remains weak during both lulls and bursts of brightness. By contrast, if emission with average polarization > 40% is bursty, it shows fluctuating polarization: the polarization decreases during the bursts. The effect is discussed in terms of streaming versus gyrating electrons.  相似文献

We have analysed MgH A 2 -X 2(0.0), (1.1), (2.2), (0.1) and (1.2) absorption bands in a sunspot spectrum. By two different methods, which are almost independent of the estimated value of the correction for stray light, we have determined the solar isotopic ratios of magnesium. These ratios are equal to the terrestrial ones - 24Mg25Mg26Mg = 801010.  相似文献

The relation between the amplitude of light m and the amplitude of the radial velocity 2K for Canis Majoris stars is investigated. A linear relationship between m and 2K is found. However, the two stars BW Vul and Sco, which have the largest radial velocity variations, do not seem to share this relationship.  相似文献

Chisnell-Chester-Whitham method has been used to study the propagation of diverging hydromagnetic cylindrical shock through an infinitely electrically conducting self-gravitating gas having an initial density distribution 0= r-w where is the density at the axis of symmetry andw is a constant, simultaneously for the two cases, viz.: (i) when the shock is weak and (ii) when it is strong. The magnetic field is taken to be axial and initially of constant strength. Analytical relations for shock velocity and shock strength have been obtained. the expressions for the pressure, the density and the particle velocity immediately behind the shock have also been derived.  相似文献

The absorption coefficients for extraordinary and ordinary electromagnetic modes are found for a tenuous hot magnetized plasma, taking into account the collisions between plasma particles and the scattering of photons. An approach is suggested which generalizes collisionless and cold-plasma approximations. The simple formulae obtained are valid both near, and at a distance from, the cyclotron harmonics. In particular, the ordinary mode is shown to have resonance at the cyclotron frequency. The number of noticeable reasonances of absorption coefficient at cyclotron harmonics is estimated for both modes.Using the coefficients obtained, the intensity, Stokes parameters and polarization of radiation of a homogeneous plasma slab are calculated for conditions which may be realized in the heated regions of accreted plasma in an AM Herculis-type system. The large difference between the absorption coefficient of extra-ordinary and ordinary modes near the cyclotron harmonics may result in the emission of the broad polarized continuum together with the narrow cyclotron lines. The polarization of these lines has a complicated spectral dependence.The results obtained are shown to be useful for explaining the main properties of AM Herculistype objects.  相似文献

From the discussion of 417 photoelectric observations of this semi-detached Algol system, obtained in B and V during 82 nights in 1965–1971, the existence of a gas stream may be inferred for the following reasons: The scatter of the single observations is dependent on the orbital phase; the largest scatter occurs at the phases following both eclipses. The conventional photometric solution which is based on the long region rectification and neglects the photometric influences of the gas stream, gives for the two colours different geometric parameters of the system. However, the short region rectification allows a consistent photometric solution. According to this solution a short total phase exists, and the luminous regions caused by the impact of particles of the gas stream are hidden during the central part of the primary eclipse. Outside of eclipses, the additional light is seen during about half of the orbital period. From the variation of the visibility of the additional light during the primary eclipse it may be concluded that during about the first half of the observing time the luminous regions were situated at the high latitudes of the bright component, indicating the existence of magnetic fields on this component at this epoch, whilst later on the additional light came from an equatorial region on the following side of the massive component.Originally presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 16 held at the Univ. of Pennsylvenia, Philadelphia Pa., U.S.A. We present the first observations of the AM Her type object EF Eri where both the polarization and the photometric data are recorded simultaneously in five color bands (UBVRI). The position angle rotates strongly (30°) vs. wavelength from U to I, probably due to Faraday rotation or due to fact that the polarized radiation seen in the different wavelength bands comes from different parts of the accretion region. The phase dependence of the position angle requires field and accretion geometry more complicated than a simple centered dipole and a second emitting region producing weaker intermediate pulses in the infrared seems to be present. We derive the value of the inclination of the system i=55°±5°, the colatitude of the active pole 1,= 38° ±5° and the second emitting region = 115° ± 5°, both of which are nearly at the same longitude facing the main accretion stream.Based on observations made at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. The observed variation of reddening as function of the heliocentric distance and the spatial variation of reddening within the coma of Comet West in the visual wavelength range have been considered to infer the properties of the cometary dust grains. The relevant model incorporates the variation in the size distribution function as well as the composition of the spherical grains. The real part of the complex index of refraction (m = m – im) is chosen such thatm = 1.6. The imaginary part is required to vary from m = 0.2 to 0.05 over the wavelength range 0.4 to 0.7 m. This choice of refractive index corresponds to dirty silicate grains. As a by-product, the model also satisfies the observed polarization and albedo for the Comet West.  相似文献

Previous shock models for the AM Herculis-type magnetic variables have assumed homogeneous accretion columns, with constant infall densities out to a characteristic column radius. The resulting energy distributions are strongly peaked in the visible to ultraviolet and are in disagreement with observations. We report the preliminary results of calculations with more general radial functions of the infall density. Exponential and gaussian profiles yield continua profiles produce continua which are flatter and in better agreement with observations. Some peculiarities in the behaviour of a model self-gravitating system described by hydrodynamical equations and isothermal equation of state connected with the presence of thermodynamical fluctuations in real systems were investigated in numerical experiment. The values of density and velocity , , respectively, were computed by numerical code perturbed on each time-step and in each computational cell by random values , for modeling such fluctuations. Perturbed values i = i + i ,v i = i + v i were used to initiate the next step of computations. This procedure is equivalent to an introduction into original hydrodynamical equations of Langevin sources which are random functions. It is shown that these small fluctuations (= v =0,2 =v 2 = 10–8) grow many times in marginally-stable state.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce a new parameter, the shear angle of vector magnetic fields, , to describe the non-potentiality of magnetic fields in active regions, which is defined as the angle between the observed vector magnetic field and its corresponding current-free field. In the case of highly inclined field configurations, this angle is approximately equal to the angular shear, , defined by Hagyardet al. (1984). The angular shear, , can be considered as the projection of the shear angle, , on the photosphere. For the active region studied, the shear angle, , seems to have a better and neater correspondence with flare activity than does . The shear angle, , gives a clearer explanation of the non-potentiality of magnetic fields. It is a better measure of the deviation of the observed magnetic field from a potential field, and is directly related to the magnetic free energy stored in non-potential fields.  相似文献

A model is presented in which we show analytically the three phases of anisotropy which occur during solar cosmic-ray events observed in the 7.5 MeV to 21 MeV kinetic-energy interval and reported by McCracken et al. (1971): (i) a highly anisotropic, near field-aligned, initial phase, (ii) a convective phase, and (iii) a late-time phase in which the anisotropy is approximately perpendicular to the mean interplanetary magnetic field. The model is based on the cosmic-ray particles being convectively transported out from the Sun, undergoing anisotropic diffusion along the interplanetary magnetic-field lines, and losing energy by adiabatic deceleration or by collision processes. The event is seen simply as a pulse moving outward from the Sun after a cosmic-ray burst with a negative density-gradient in front of it and a positive gradient behind. The convective phase (ii) occurs as the spatial peak moves past the observer and has a propagation speed V d associated with it; the anisotropy vector late in the decay phase (iii) is the result of a residual balance between the radial outward convection and the inward radial component of the anisotropic diffusion. The mathematical solutions are based upon a diffusion coefficient proportional to heliocentric radius and independent of energy and are thus rather special. However they yield formulae for the propagation speed of the convective phase and the direction in space of the long-time anisotropy which are useful as a guide to the dependence of these quantities on the solar wind speed V, the diffusion coefficient and the spectral index . In this model V d increases with V, , and ; and , the angle between the anisotropy vector at infinite time and the outward radial direction increases with /V and decreases as is increased. These predictions of the dependence of and V d upon V, , and are open to observational verification.  相似文献

In this paper we continue the work of Weymann, investigating the causes of distortion of the spectrum of the residual radiation from the Planck curve. We discuss the distortion to the spectrum, resulting from recombination of primeval plasma.We then derive an analytic expression for the distortion to the equilibrium spectrum due to Compton scattering by hot electrons. On the basis of the observational data we conclude that a period of the existence of neutral hydrogen is inescapable in the hot model of the universe. It is concluded that any injection of energy att>1010 sec (red shiftz<105) give the distortions of the equilibrium spectrum.
