The Thalanga volcanic‐hosted massive sulfide deposit occurs in the Cambro‐Ordovician Mt Windsor Subprovince in northern Queensland. The orebody comprises steeply dipping, stratiform, sheet‐like, polymetallic massive sulfide lenses. Overall, the volcanic facies architecture at Thalanga is dominated by quartz‐ and/or feldspar‐phyric lavas and synvolcanic intrusions that comprise coherent facies and in situ and resedimented autoclastic facies. Systematic phenocryst logging (mineralogy, abundance, size) has been used to discriminate separate emplacement units of rhyolite in the footwall and dacite in the hangingwall. Some of the petrographically different rhyolite and dacite types can also be distinguished using immobile‐element geochemistry. Rhyolitic lavas and intrusions in the footwall are weakly to strongly altered. Apparent clastic textures resulting from hydrothermal alteration and metamorphism are widely developed in the coherent facies. Genuine clastic textures are characterised by clasts with randomly oriented internal laminar or banded fabric (e.g. rotated, flow‐laminated clasts), marked and consistent differences in quartz phenocryst abundance and/or size range between clasts and matrix, and normal grading. Mass‐flow‐emplaced, rhyolitic breccia units delineate palaeo‐sea‐floor positions in the footwall that are potentially prospective for exhalative massive sulfide mineralisation. A comparison of the distribution of clastic and coherent facies with the geometry of strongly altered zones in the footwall indicates that intense hydrothermal fluid flow was independent of the facies arrangement. The massive sulfide lenses conformably overly altered footwall rhyolite and occur in a distinctive facies association which includes coarse quartz‐phenocryst‐rich rhyolitic sills with peperitic contacts and crystal‐rich polymictic breccia. The hangingwall to the orebody consists of largely unaltered dacitic lavas and synvolcanic intrusions and minor dacitic pumice breccia, dacitic breccia and polymictic volcanic breccia. The facies architecture shows that the Thalanga massive sulfide deposit formed in a below‐storm‐wave‐base depositional environment on top of an elevated, lava‐dominated, rhyolitic volcanic centre. A modern analogue for the setting of the Thalanga massive sulfide is the PACMANUS hydrothermal field on the crest of the dacite lava‐dominated Pual Ridge in the eastern Manus backarc basin (Papua New Guinea).  相似文献

The Middle Devonian to Early Carboniferous Campwyn Volcanics of coastal central Queensland form part of the fore‐arc basin and eastern flank of the volcanic arc of the northern New England Fold Belt. They consist of a complex association of pyroclastic, hyaloclastic and resedimented, texturally immature volcaniclastic facies associated with shallow intrusions, lavas and minor limestone, non‐volcanic siliciclastics and ignimbrite. Primary igneous rocks indicate a predominantly mafic‐intermediate parentage. Mafic to intermediate pyroclastic rocks within the unit formed from both subaerial and ?submarine to emergent strombolian and phreatomagmatic eruptions. Quench‐fragmented hyaloclastite breccias are widespread and abundant. Shallow marine conditions for much of the succession are indicated by fossil assemblages and intercalated limestone and epiclastic sandstone and conglomerate facies. Volcanism and associated intrusions were widely dispersed in the Campwyn depositional basin in both space and time. The minor component of silicic volcanic products is thought to have been less proximal and derived from eruptive centres to the west, inboard of the basin.  相似文献

The results of high pressure experiments on diffusion and Soret separation in natural silicate melts show that the diffusive behaviour between natural silicic and mafic magmas can be approximately modelled as if the system were a binary mixture of SiO2 and other components such as MgO+FeO+CaO. Steady state compositional profiles across a diffusive interface between silicic and mafic magma layers are calculated on the basis of phenomenological relationships for the fluxes of chemical species and heat in the binary mixtures, using the experimental data of diffusion and Soret coefficients in natural silicate melts. The compositional profiles show a curvature with a minimum SiO2 value within the interface due to the Soret effect and temperature dependence of diffusion coefficient. The compositional gradient at the lower half of the diffusive interface is similar to that resulting from the Soret separation of a mafic melt regardless of the composition of the silicic magmas. These results suggest that picritic magma can be formed in the interfacial region between the mafic and silicic magma layers. The compositional gradient explains chemical variation of mafic to picritic inclusions in a mixed andesite of the Abu Volcano Group, Japan.

The Pre-Betic is the most northerly of the Alpine zones forming the Betic Cordilleras of southern Spain. It consists of strongly folded and faulted Mesozoic and Tertiary rocks, the oldest of which are ferruginous and gypsiferous Triassic mudstones, followed by a predominantly carbonate facies of Cretaceous, Palaeogene and Miocene age. Although this sequence is interrupted by a number of minor unconformities, the major structures were formed during the middle or late Miocene. The highly incompetent Triassic rocks are the most strongly deformed, and form diapiric intrusions discordant to regional structural trends in the younger rocks. The latter are essentially of two facies: massive competent limestones which are deformed by relatively simple folds of large wavelength, and highly incompetent marl-limestone interbeds with complex disharmonic folds and crush belts. Faults include low-angle and high-angle thrusts, gravity slides and wrench faults. The regional tectonic strike is ENE to NE, but the diapiric intrusions mostly follow WNW and N directions. These intrusions have pushed the younger rocks aside, the result being polyphase structures of several trends.Less intense post-Miocene tectonics are mostly associated with continued diapirism and have resulted in the folding and tilting of the late Miocene to Quaternary elastic sediments.  相似文献

The metabasites were originally minor intrusions which are now characterised by wholly metamorphic textures and mineral assemblages diagnostic of an amphibolite-granulite facies transition. Two forms of chemical variation can be distinguished: (1) an igneous-type differentiation, involving tholeiitic iron enrichment accompanied by increases in some incompatible elements, and decreases in the transition trace elements; (2) metamorphic fractionation effects resulting in deficiencies in K, Rb, Sr, Ba, Zr, and enhancement in Na in the highest grade rocks. These distributions closely parallel those in the host acid-intermediate charnockitic gneisses. The data preclude the possibility that the deficiencies were caused by removal of melts from the granulites. The metamorphism closely followed intrusion, and it is unlikely that the fractionations were caused by secondary dehydration of once hydrous assemblages. The preferred model involves intrusion and crystallisation directly under high-grade conditions, possibly with CO2-rich fluids playing an important role in suppressing the formation of hydrous minerals.  相似文献

Nd and Sr isotopic data are presented for the 2449–2441 Ma Olanga and Burakovka layered mafic complexes in the eastern Baltic Shield. These complexes have similar tectonic position, but differ in two aspects: the age of the enclosing crust and the post-crystallization metamorphic history. The Sm–Nd isotopic results for the Kivakka and Lukkulaisvaara intrusions, Olanga Complex, are consistent with the model of closed-system crystallization of a single magma without significant wallrock assimilation. The Rb–Sr systems of minerals were disturbed by late Rb addition during 1.75–1.50 Ga metamorphism. The Nd and Sr isotopic systems in the Burakovka complex show no metamorphic disturbance and indicate mixing of at least four isotopically distinct components. Isotopic variations in the Burakovka Complex can be explained by a 4–20 per cent contamination of a primary komatiitic or picritic magma with a Mesoarchean crust, similar to that exposed in the region. A similar model, applied to the Olanga Complex using a Neoarchean crustal isotopic composition, cannot reproduce the observed isotopic signature. The nearly uniform initial ɛNd values between −1 and −2.3, observed in the Kivakka and Lukkulaisvaara intrusions of the Olanga Complex, as well as in the other 2.50–2.44 Ga layered mafic intrusions throughout the eastern Baltic Shield, are better explained by a mantle plume model with small amounts of crustal contamination and minor involvement of asthenospheric material. This model is also consistent with the geological observations and the temporal distribution of the Paleoproterozoic mafic magmatism in the eastern Baltic Shield. As an alternative, the enriched isotopic characteristics may be explained by melting of a metasomatically modified lithospheric mantle source. Received: 4 August 1994/Accepted: 5 April 1996  相似文献

A potash trachyte (containing 13% K2O) crops out within the Malvernian (Pre-cambrian) calc-alkaline igneous complex. The chemical composition is similar to that of minor intrusions in areas of alkaline igneous activity. An origin by partial melting of biotite-rich basement rocks is proposed.  相似文献

It is widely accepted that basaltic magmas are products of partial fusion of periodotite within planetary mantles. As such, they provide valuable insights into the composition, structure, and processes of planetary interiors. Those compositions which approach primary melt compositions provide the most direct information about planetary interiors and serve as a starting point to understand basaltic evolution. Within the collection of lunar samples returned by the Apollo and Luna missions are homogeneous, picritic glass beads of volcanic origin. These picritic glasses are our closest approximations to primary magmas. As such, these glass beads provide a unique perspective concerning the origin of mare basalts, the characteristics of the lunar interior, and processes in the early differentiation of the Moon. We have obtained trace element data for these picritic glasses using SIMS techniques. These data and literature isotopic and experimental data on the picritic glasses are placed within the framework of mare basaltic magmatism. The volcanic glasses are very diverse in their trace element characteristics, for example, they have a wide range of REE pattern shapes and concentrations. Like the crystalline mare basalts, all picritic glasses have a negative Eu anomaly. Unlike the crystalline mare basalts, there is little correlation between the size of the Eu anomaly and overall REE concentrations. Trace element differences among the various glasses suggests that a KREEP component was incorporated into their mantle source. This implies large scale mixing of the “Lunar Magma Ocean”-derived cumulate pile. Subtle differences among glasses suggest that local mixing of sources may also have been an important process. Preservation of subtle chemical differences in the picritic glasses and crystalline basalts may be interpreted as indicating that they were produced by small to moderate degrees of partial melting and that the lunar mantle did not experience extensive melting during episodes of mare volcanism.Several lines of evidence are consistent with the view that the picritic glasses were derived from mantle sources that were compositionally distinct from the sources for crystalline mare basalts. These are parallel, but no common, liquid lines of descent; chemical differences between picritic glasses and the more primitive crystalline mare basalts; experimental studies indicating that the picritic glasses are multiply saturated at depths greater than that of the mare basalts; differences in lead isotopic data; and the mode of eruption (i.e., fire fountaining for glass beads). These data also provide circumstantial evidence that suggests that the picritic glasses were derived from a source somewhat more volatile-rich than that of the mare basalts.Several petrogenetic models are suggested by the trace element characteristics of the picritic glasses:
  • 1.(1) Partial melting of heterogeneous lunar mantle at depths greater than 300 km to produce the parental magmas (picritic) for both the mare basalts and picritic glasses. Picritic magmas represented by glass beads were erupted to the surface with small degrees of fractional crystallization while mare basalts were produced by larger degrees of fractional crystallization (15–30%) of similar (but not identical) picritic magmas.
  • 2.(2) Picritic magmas represented by the glass beads were generated at depths greater than 400 km in a volatile-enriched (relative to the mare basalt source) heterogeneous mantle while mare basalts are fractional crystallization products of picritic magmas generated at depths of less than 400 km.
  • 3.(3) The picritic magmas represented by the glass beads represent polybaric melting that initiated at depths of at least 1000 km. A primitive mantle component or less processed cumulate mantle components may have been involved in the generation of the picritic glasses in any of these models.

We report new data on the stratigraphy, mineralogy and geochemistry of the rocks and ores of the Maslovsky Pt–Cu–Ni sulfide deposit which is thought to be the southwestern extension of the Noril’sk 1 intrusion. Variations in the Ta/Nb ratio of the gabbro-dolerites hosting the sulfide mineralization and the compositions of their pyroxene and olivine indicate that these rocks were produced by two discrete magmatic pulses, which gave rise to the Northern and Southern Maslovsky intrusions that together host the Maslovsky deposit. The Northern intrusion is located inside the Tungusska sandstones and basalt of the Ivakinsky Formation. The Southern intrusion cuts through all of the lower units of the Siberian Trap tuff-lavas, including the Lower Nadezhdinsky Formation; demonstrating that the ore-bearing intrusions of the Noril’sk Complex post-date that unit. Rocks in both intrusions have low TiO2 and elevated MgO contents (average mean TiO2 <1 and MgO?=?12?wt.%) that are more primitive than the lavas of the Upper Formations of the Siberian Traps which suggests that the ore-bearing intrusions result from a separate magmatic event. Unusually high concentrations of both HREE (Dy+Yb+Er+Lu) and Y (up to 1.2 and 2.1?ppm, respectively) occur in olivines (Fo79.5 and 0.25% NiO) from picritic and taxitic gabbro-dolerites with disseminated sulfide mineralization. Thus accumulation of HREE, Y and Ni in the melts is correlated with the mineral potential of the intrusions. The TiO2 concentration in pyroxene has a strong negative correlation with the Mg# of both host mineral and Mg# of host rock. Sulfides from the Northern Maslovsky intrusion are predominantly chalcopyrite–pyrrhotite–pentlandite with subordinate and minor amounts of cubanite, bornite and millerite and a diverse assemblage of rare precious metal minerals including native metals (Au, Ag and Pd), Sn–Pd–Pt–Bi–Pb compounds and Fe–Pt alloys. Sulfides from the Southern Maslovsky intrusion have δ 34S?=?5–6‰ up to 10.8‰ in two samples whereas the country rock basalt have δ 34S?=?3–4‰, implying there was no in situ assimilation of surrounding rocks by magmas.  相似文献

The Proterozoic Expo Intrusive Suite comprises a series of maficto ultramafic intrusions crosscutting the Povungnituk Groupof the Cape Smith Fold Belt in New Quebec. The intrusions aremainly in the form of blade-shaped dikes that penetrate a sediment-richhorizon in the middle of the Beauparlant Formation and terminatedownward against massive basalts of the lower Beauparlant Formation.Significant accumulations of magmatic sulfide occur at the basalterminations of the dikes. At stratigraphic levels above theBeauparlant Formation the intrusions appear as broad dikes orsills within the Nuvilik Formation, below the mineralized lavaflows and subvolcanic intrusions of the Raglan Formation. TheExpo Intrusive Suite and the mineralized bodies of the RaglanFormation are probably coeval and comagmatic with the overlyingChukotat Group. Post-emplacement folding has exposed the ExpoIntrusive Suite over about 5 km of structural relief, revealingthe basal sulfide concentrations where dike segments terminateon the flanks of anticlines. The parent magma as preserved inchilled margins and narrow dikes was a picrite containing 17wt % MgO (i.e. komatiitic basalt) and slightly depleted in Th,U and Nb relative to middle and heavy rare earth elements. Thecompositions of ultramafic cumulate rocks within the intrusionsare strongly enriched in Th, U and Nb relative to heavy rareearth elements, reflecting assimilation of the enclosing basaltsand metasediments. Modeling of the assimilation process suggeststhat the picritic magma was capable of assimilating masses ofbasalt or sediment up to 50% of the original mass of magma.Assimilation of 10% of a mixture of basalt and sediment causedthe magma to become sulfide-saturated, and was accompanied bythe crystallization of masses of ultramafic cumulates approximatelyequal to the mass of rock assimilated. The presence of dikeswhose chilled margins resemble uncontaminated primary magmasbut that contain abundant cumulates recording wholesale assimilationof host-rocks indicates that the process of assimilation andfractional crystallization required to produce continental tholeiitesfrom picritic parent magmas may not require the presence oflong-lived magma chambers, but can occur during transport alongdikes and reaction with wall-rocks. The current debate on the origin of platinum-group element (PGE) reefs in layered intrusions centres mostly on gravity settling of sulphide liquid from overlying magma versus its introduction with interstitial melt/fluids migrating upward from the underlying cumulate pile. Here, we show that PGE-rich chromitite seams of the Rum Eastern Layered Intrusion provide evidence for an alternative origin of such deposits in layered intrusions. These laterally extensive 2-mm-thick chromitite seams occur at the bases of several cyclic mafic–ultramafic units and show lithological and textural relationships suggesting in situ growth directly at a crystal–liquid interface. This follows from chromitite development along the edges of steeply inclined culminations and depressions at unit boundaries, even where these are vertically oriented or overhanging. High concentrations of PGE (up to 2–3 ppm Pd + Pt) are controlled by fine-grained base-metal sulphides, which are closely associated with chromitite seams. The following sequence of events explains the origin of the PGE-rich chromitite seams: (a) emplacement of picritic magma that caused thermal and mechanical erosion of underlying cumulate, followed by in situ growth of chromite against the base, (b) precipitation of sulphide droplets on chromite grains acting as favourable substrate or catalyst for sulphide nucleation, (c) the scavenging of PGE by sulphide droplets from fresh magma continuously brought towards the base by convection. Since the rate of magma convection is 105–107 times higher than that of the solidification (km/year to km/day versus 0.5–1.0 cm/year), the in situ formed sulphide droplets can equilibrate with picritic magma of thousands to million times their own volume. As a result, the sulphide-bearing rocks are able to reach economic concentrations of PGE (several ppm). We tentatively suggest that the basic principles of our model may be used to explain the origin of PGE-rich chromitites and classical PGE reefs in other layered mafic–ultramafic intrusions.  相似文献

The experimentally determined equilibrium curves for the subsolidus olivineplagioclase reaction fall into two groups: those with positive slopes (dP/dT) that suggest reaction during cooling, and those with zero slopes that imply reaction by increase of pressure. Corona structures were developed in the mafic cumulates of northern Norway at different times during Caledonian almandine amphibolite facies metamorphism, as individual intrusions cooled from solidus temperatures. Unless pressure increases coincided fortuitously with subsolidus cooling, these relationships suggest that the positive-slope models are most analogous to natural systems.  相似文献

Experiments characterizing the kinetics of anorthosite dissolution in lunar picritic magmas (very low-Ti, low-Ti, and high-Ti picritic glasses) were conducted at 0.6 GPa and 1250-1400 °C using the dissolution couple method. Reaction between the anorthosite and lunar picritic magmas at 1250-1300 °C produced a spinel + melt layer. Reaction between the anorthosite and an olivine-saturated low-Ti magma at 1250-1300 °C produced a crystal-free region between the spinel + melt layer and the olivine-saturated magma. The anorthosite dissolution experiments conducted at 1400 °C simply dissolved anorthosite and did not result in a crystal-bearing region. The rate of anorthosite dissolution strongly depends on temperature and composition of the reacting melt. Concentration profiles that develop during anorthosite dissolution are nonlinear and extend from the picritic glass compositions to anorthite. These profiles feature a large and continuous variation in melt density and viscosity from the anorthosite-melt interface to the initial picritic magmas. In both the low-Ti and high-Ti magmas the diffusive fluxes of TiO2, Al2O3, and SiO2 are strongly coupled to the concentration gradients of CaO and FeO. Anorthosite dissolution may play an important role in producing the chemical variability of the lunar picritic magmas, the origin of spinel in the lunar basalts and picritic glasses, and the petrogenesis of the high-Al basalts.  相似文献

Experimental partial melting of plagioclase lherzolite at 0.7 MPa confining pressure has produced euhedral olivine crystals by corrosion and overgrowth during cooling. The particular conditions of this experiment allow observation of both processes recorded in the crystal shape: corrosion boundaries are rounded, or straight when parallel to [001] intersection of {110} planes; (010) and {110} facets are developed by fast overgrowth during quenching. These observations support the contention that phenocrysts in basaltic or picritic magmas are, in part, xenocrysts. The possible mantle origin of olivine crystals in two natural occurrences of ultramafic magmas; the picritic pillow lavas of the Troodos, and a wehrlitic intrusion of the oman ophiolite, is investigated. In both cases discriminant characteristics are deduced from detailed microstructural study. The mantle origin of olivine megacrysts in the investigated picrites raises the question about the existence of picritic magmas in the mantle.  相似文献

Mafic rocks at Lake Nipigon provide a record of rift-related continental basaltic magmatism during the Keweenawan event at 1109 Ma. The mafic rocks consist of an early, volumetrically minor suite of picritic intrusions varying in composition from olivine gabbro to peridotite and a later suite of tholeiitic diabase dikes, sheets and sills. The diabase occurs primarily as two 150 to 200 m thick sills with a textural stratigraphy indicating that the sills represent single cooling units. Compositional variation in the sills indicates that they crystallized from several magma pulses. The diabases are similar in chemistry to olivine tholeiite flood basalts of the adjacent Keweenawan rift, particularly with respect to low TiO2, K2O and P2O5. The picrites have higher TiO2, K2O and P2O5 than the diabases and are similar to, but more primitive than, high Fe-Ti basalts which erupted early in the Keweenawan volcanic sequence. All of the rocks crystallized from fractionated liquids. The picrites are cumulate rocks derived at shallow crustal depths from a magma controlled predominantly by olivine fractionation. Picritic chills are in equilibrium with olivine phenocrysts of composition Fo80 and are interpreted to represent the least evolved liquids observed. The parental magma of the picrites was probably Fe rich relative to the parental magma of the diabase. The diabase sills crystallized from an evolved basaltic liquid controlled by cotectic crystallization of plagioclase and lesser olivine and pyroxene. The emplacement of dense olivine phyric picritic magmas early in the sequence, followed by later voluminous compositionally evolved magmas of lower density suggests the development of a crustal density filter effect as the igneous event reached a peak. Delamination of the crust-mantle interface may have resulted in the transition from olivine controlled primitive magma to fractionated magma through the development of crustal underplating.

Modern analytical methods (XRF and ICP-MS) were employed for the first time to investigate the geochemical characteristics of rocks from the Noril’sk Trough. It differs from other folded structures of the region in the presence of massifs with high-grade Pt-Cu-Ni ores at relatively high levels in the section of the platform cover, in the middle part of the tuff-lava sequence. This provides an opportunity of directaions of observe geologic relationships between the extrusive and intrusive rocks of the Siberian Traps and more reliably test the possibility of their comagmatic origin, because other intrusions with massive ores occur at a deeper stratigraphic level in the Devonian sequences (Kharaerlakhsky and Talnakhsky massifs in the Kharaerlakhsky Trough). A comparison of the volcanic sections of the Noril’sk Trough and other parts of the region suggests that the tectonic structures were initiated before or simultaneously with trap development. By the example of the sill of the Maslovsky intrusion, it was shown that the ore-bearing gabbro-dolerites were formed in post-Nadezhdinsky time. The geochemical characteristics of the rocks of the Noril’sk 1 and Maslovsky intrusions were compared with those of the supposedly comagmatic rocks of the Gudchikhinsky, Tuklonsky, Nadezhdinsky, and Morongovsky formations. It was found that the Gudchikhinsky picritic basalts show higher Gd/Yb values compared with the picritic gabbro-dolerites (on average, 2.5 and 1.5, respectively) and higher nickel and calcium contents in olivine (0.44 and 0.22 wt % NiO and 0.30 and 0.12 wt % CaO for Fo82, respectively). The high-magnesium rocks of the Tuklonsky Formation are depleted in U and enriched in Eu relative to their intrusive analogues and also differ with respect to NiO and CaO contents in olivine (0.11 and 0.21 wt % NiO and 0.21 and 0.12 wt % CaO for Fo78, respectively). The rocks of the Nadezhdinsky Formation show strongly enriched incompatible trace element patterns, especially for LREE. Although the Morongovsky Formation is geochemically similar to the intrusions of the Noril’sk complex, it shows a lower weighted mean MgO content (6–7 wt % as compared with 11–12 wt % for the gabbro-dolerites). Thus, it was shown by the example of the geologic setting and compositional features of the Maslovsky intrusion that the massifs with high-grade mineralization are not analogues of volcanic complexes, but were produced by an independent magmatic stage.  相似文献
