The center-to-limb behaviour of the Ba ii 4554 resonance line is analyzed together with data from the extreme limb, flash intensities and profiles of other Ba ii lines. An empirical NLTE method is employed in which the observed profiles are compared with synthesized profiles based on a standard one-dimensional model atmosphere, with the line source function, the barium abundance, the collisional damping and the atmospheric turbulence as free parameters.The line profiles from the extreme limb furnish considerable constraints on the formation of Ba ii 4554. Its wings reverse into emission well inside the solar limb, a phenomenon which cannot be explained by any frequency-independent line source function. Accounting for effects of partially coherent scattering in the line source function is a necessary and adequate step to reproduce the observations both over the disk and near the limb. The form of the empirically derived frequency-dependent line source function is discussed.Results are given for various parameters (gf-values, solar barium abundance and isotope ratios, collisional damping, microturbulence and macroturbulence).The 4554 profile of disk center shows a depression in its blue wing resembling asymetries found in various stellar spectral lines.  相似文献

During the total solar eclipse, 1965 May 30, a 25 cm aperturef/8.0 telescope and Fabry-Perot interferometer were operated aboard the USAF-AEC aircraft. High resolution spectra of the Fexiv emission line, 530.3 nm, were obtained. Deconvolved intensity vs wavelength profiles of the second order fringe overlay a helmet structure on the NM limb at out to 1.37R . The profiles yield coronal temperatures, absolute intensities and Doppler velocities in regions of apparently open magnetic field structure and within the closed field lines of the helmet. Together with white light intensities the observations are interpreted to provide temperatures and turbulent velocities in and around this coronal structure. Comparison is made with a model by Billings and Roberts. We suggest a model with radial flow (solar wind) velocities of 60 km s–1 satisfies the observations in the open field line region.Work performed under the auspices of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, and portions of the analysis at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colo.  相似文献

Line intensity ratios of NeVI lines with respect to a resonance line of MgVI have been considered for electron density and temperature determinations within the chromosphere-corona transition region. The electron pressure within the transition region has been assumed to be constant. In addition, these ratios would enable us to estimate the relative element abundances of neon to magnesium. An attempt has been made to explain the extreme ultraviolet intensities of NeVI and MgVI lines as observed by ATM ultraviolet spectrometer. The observed intensities correspond to the average quiet-Sun conditions near solar minimum. Theoretical intensities for NeVI and MgVI lines have been computed using a model solar atmosphere. Theoretical intensities obtained by using the values 3.98 × 10–5 and 3.16 × 10–5 for element abundance of Ne and Mg, respectively, seem to agree well with the expected intensities. The agreement between some of the expected and computed intensities suggests the need for future observations at higher spectral resolutions to resolve difficulties arising out of blending due to two or more lines.  相似文献

Spectral line profiles of Si ii and Si iii are presented which were observed both at solar center and near the quiet solar limb with the Naval Research Laboratory EUV spectrograph of ATM/SKYLAB. Absolute intensities and line profiles are derived from the photographic data. A brief discussion is given of their center-to-limb variations and of the optical thickness of the chromosphere in these lines. Nonthermal broadening velocities are found for the optically thin lines from their full width at half maximum intensity (FWHM).Also at High Altitude Observatory for part of this work.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Low-noise observations have been obtained to search for a possible limb effect in the K i 769.9 nm resonance line. The observations were carried out along the north/south diameter of the solar disc. The data were individually corrected for the effects of straylight on the velocity measurements. A small, but significant limb effect is detected. The total shift in the line core from center to limb corresponds to 125 m s–1 with an uncertainty of < 30 m s–1.  相似文献

Imaging spectroscopic data of the He i 1083 nm limb emission were taken on several dates in October and November 1995 with the NASA/NSO spectromagnetograph at the NSO/Kitt Peak vacuum telescope and on 9 December, 1993 with the Michigan infrared camera at the NSO/Sacramento Peak vacuum tower telescope. Emission line profiles were observed in quiet-Sun and coronal hole locations on the northern and southern solar poles and on the east solar limb. The height of the He i 1083 nm shell above the continuum limb at 1083 nm was measured to be 2.11 ± 0.12 Mm with the Kitt Peak data, and 1.74 ± 0.05 Mm with the Sacramento Peak data. The Kitt Peak data show (1) within the measurement error there is no significant difference in the height or thickness of the emission shell in coronal holes compared with the quiet Sun, (2) the 1083 nm emission intensity drops by 50% in coronal holes, (3) the line width decreases by about 2 km s-1 in coronal holes (suggesting less inclined spicules), (4) the line width of the He i 1083 nm line jumps significantly as the line of sight crosses the solar limb (consistent with a higher temperature upper shell), (5) a quiescent prominence shows a smaller spectral line width (consistent with a cooler temperature or less velocity broadening), and (6) the entire emission shell and the prominence show a He i spectral component ratio of about 8 (suggesting optically thin emission).Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. O vi ( = 1032 Å) profiles have been measured in and above a filament at the limb, previously analyzed in H i, Mg ii, Ca ii resonance lines (Vial et al., 1979). They are compared to profiles measured at the quiet Sun center and at the quiet Sun limb.Absolute intensities are found to be about 1.55 times larger than above the quiet limb at the same height (3); at the top of the prominence (15 above the limb) one finds a maximum blue shift and a minimum line width. The inferred non-thermal velocity (29 km s–1) is about the same as in cooler lines while the approaching line-of-sight velocity (8 km s–1) is lower than in Ca ii lines.The O vi profile recorded 30 above the limb outside the filament is wider (FWHM = 0.33 Å). It can be interpreted as a coronal emission of O vi ions with a temperature of about 106 K, and a non-thermal velocity (NTV) of 49 km s–1. This NTV is twice the NTV of quiet Sun center O vi profiles. Lower NTV require higher temperatures and densities (as suggested by K-coronameter measurements). Computed emission measures for this high temperature regime agree with determinations from disk intensities of euv lines.  相似文献

We present results from eclipse spectra in the wavelength region 4588–4682 Å, taken during the eclipse of February 15, 1961 at Bra, Yugoslavia. Absolute line intensities have been determined in the photosphere-chromosphere transition region. The method of reduction is discussed in Section 2 and the observed variation of the total intensity as a function of the height is shown for a number of lines in Figures 5–8. The results for the Fe i lines are compared with computations (as described in Paper I: van Dessel, 1970) for various solar model atmospheres (Section 4). The model, which combines Holweger's (1967) temperature distribution for the excitation temperature with the HSRA model (Gingerich et al., 1971) for the electron temperature, yields a better agreement than all pure LTE-models.  相似文献

The solar UV continuum has been derived from intensity-calibrated observations with the High-Resolution Telescope and Spectrograph - HRTS - on its second rocket flight in 1978. A database has been constructed using the spatially-resolved solar spectrum 1180–1700 Å along a slit extending from near disk center to the solar limb and crossing a sunspot and two active regions. The angular resolution is approximately 1.8″. The data consist of 1772 spectral scans in the full center-to-limb range, including both quiet and active solar regions. The distribution of solar UV intensities has been derived and the center-to-limb variations of the continuum intensities in the quiet Sun are studied. Both quantities show spectral variations, particularly across the Sii continuum edge at 1521 Å. The spectra have been fitted to curves of constant color temperature above and below the Sii edge. The derived center-to-limb variations have been compared to the values of Samain (1979) which are frequently referred to in the literature. A relatively large discrepancy may be explained by the higher spectral and angular resolution of the HRTS as compared to the rocket instrument used by Samain. Comparisons with the VAL III model calculations by Vernazza, Avrett, and Loeser (1981) show discrepancies between the observations and the model predictions, particularly with regard to the sign and amount of the intensity change across the Sii continuum edge. It is noted that some of the results presented, i.e., absolute intensities and brightness temperatures may change, pending confirmation of the SUSIM Spacelab 2 irradiance results (VanHoosieret al., 1988).  相似文献

We compare high-resolution spectra from the Sun and the four solar-type stars 16 Cyg A, 16 Cyg B, HD 32008, HD 34411 obtained with IUE in the wavelength range 2650–2930 Å. The comparison is made for peak intensities between absorption lines. At the level of accuracy of the IUE observations, the stars 16 Cyg A, 16 Cyg B, HD 34411 are indistinguishable from the Sun, in particular the Mgii resonance line profiles are identical. HD 32008 is not a solar analog but is evidently of late G to early K spectral type.Based on observations with the International Ultraviolet Explorer collected at the Villafranca Satellite Tracking Station of the European Space Agency.  相似文献

We present quiet Sun observations obtained during a rocket flight of the Al i autoionization lines 1932 and 1936 at solar pointings ranging from = 0.73 out to the visible limb. Absolute intensities are estimated to be accurate to approximately ±20%. These lines progressively weaken with decreasing but never go into emission before finally disappearing with the continuum just beyond the visible solar limb. The observations are compared with LTE line profiles computed through the quiet Sun atmosphere of Vernazza et al. (1976). We discuss several areas of disagreement between the synthetic and observed profiles.  相似文献

The time sequence of line profiles of Fe xiv emission obtained at the 1965 solar eclipse is examined for temporal variations of intensity and profile. Although no variations are found in some regions examined, two regions with intensity and profile line width variations are found. Eclipse observations of total line intensities (Cr i: two groups of lines; Ti ii, Fe ii and Cr ii: two lines each) are interpreted in terms of departures from LTE. The same method as described in Paper III (van Dessel, 1974) is used. The HSRA model is used to compute the LTE populations. A distribution of NLTE-coefficients is obtained for each group of lines. The lines discussed in the present paper are seen to remain in emission down to some 1000 km inside the limb. As a consequence, interpretation is less simple than for the Fe i lines (Paper III); population and excitation temperatures are found to be rather divergent from Holweger's temperature, which was used for a first approximation.  相似文献

A comparison is made between Ca xix and Ca xviii line ratios observed in solar flares with the Bent Crystal Spectrometer (BCS) on the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) satellite and currently available atomic data. Close agreement is found with the excitation rates recently published by Pradhan et al. (1981). The observations show little dependence of line ratios on electron temperature, supporting a further conclusion that cascade contributions to the 23 P and 23 S levels are not significant.  相似文献

We present theoretical Ca ii K-line profiles and filtergram contrasts for several recent models of solar faculae. The line profiles vary greatly between models and between complete and partial frequency redistribution non-LTE calculations for any given model. The filtergram contrasts are relatively insensitive to the line formation theory which greatly simplifies the calculation for comparison with observations. Low-noise limb-effect observations of the non-magnetic line Fei 557.6 nm are presented. Separate measurements along the solar equator and the meridian have been carried out and have been corrected for scattered light. The limb-effect line shifts at the pole and at the equatorial limb are found to be equal. The detailed shape of the limb effect along the meridian is found to differ significantly from that along the equator. This difference can be explained by the presence of a meridional circulation pattern, with horizontal flows < 50 m–1 from both the equator and poles toward ± 45° latitude. Alternatively the meridian/equator difference may be caused by a combination of latitude dependence of the granular parameters. An increase with latitude of the granular velocity scale height, contrast, or mean sizes could explain the observations.  相似文献

The rotational velocity of the Sun is determined by sunspot tracings and by spectroscopic measurements of the photospheric plasma using the non-Zeeman-split line Fe i 5576 and absolute iodine reference. Stationary line shifts as limb-effect and longperiodical shifts introduced by supergranulation are discussed. The dependence on solar activity as Ca+ emissivity and magnetic fields is investigated including line asymmetries. The results are: (a) The non active photospheric regions rotate with 1995 ± 30 m s-1. Solar active regions yield a 60 m s-1 higher value. (b) In quiet regions the absolute limb shift varies between 170 m s-1 at the line core and 310 m s-1 at I/I cont 0.8 (C-shape); thus the limb shift is mainly due to entire line shifts. (c) In solar active regions (close to spots) asymmetries are widely reduced in line cores; this effect cannot be associated with a variation of the limb effect due to a large scatter of Doppler shifts near spots. (d) A reduced limb shift of 50 m s-1 is found in network boundaries and is mainly due to a small scale downflow. (e) Observations with a smaller influence of stray light yield symmetric profiles in umbrae. (f) Differences between umbral rotation rates from tracer and spectroscopic measurements do not exceed 20 m s-1, when considering straylight. The rotational velocity from umbrae exceeds that from the photosphere by 30–60 m s-1. Some individual spots yield nearly the same rotation rate as the photosphere.  相似文献

A recent two-component model for the formation of the Caii K line in the solar chromosphere put forward by Beebe and Johnson is discussed. Although this model is a great advance on existing one-component models, it is pointed out that observations require a minimum of three components in order to understand the formation of the K2 peaks.In order to make some progress in the study of multicomponent models an adaptation of the empirical (or analytic) approach is suggested. This relates the line source function directly to observations and places a secondary importance (at this stage) on the synthetic approach to the problem. A model is obtained which is in adequate agreement with observed mean profiles and its features are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Predicted allowed and forbidden EUV line intensities of Fe xv and Ni xvii are presented in explicit graphical form, clarifying and extending the earlier treatment of Bely and Blaha (1968). In the case of the former ion a detailed comparison with available observations leads to questioning or rejection of some presently accepted line identifications (323.57 Å, 317.61 Å), and on the other hand suggests that a quiet Sun line at 304.853 Å is due to Fe xv. For the little known ion Ni xvii estimates of level structure and line wavelengths are given and a preliminary comparison is made with recent flare observations.  相似文献

We present three sets of observations of n = 1 to n = 2 lines due to helium-like aluminium (Alxii), made during two solar flares (25 August, 1980 and 19 October, 1986), using the X-Ray Polychromator on the SMM satellite. The observed temperature-sensitive line ratio G is shown to be consistent with the close-coupling calculations of Keenan and McCann (1987), although the ratio R, which is both temperature and density-sensitive for lower-Z elements, is not sufficiently well determined from these data to say more than that the observed values of R are not inconsistent with the theoretical calculations. This region of the spectrum also includes the helium-like magnesium (Mgxi) 11 S - 31 P line, and it is shown that the ratio of this line to the Alxii resonance (11 S - 21 P) line is a more sensitive indicator of electron temperature than are the Alxii G and R ratios. We demonstrate that the three ratios may be used together in order to derive values of emission measure, electron temperature and electron density during these flares.  相似文献
