Ultraviolet spectra of population I WR stars obtained from IUE archive are used to determine fundamental stellar parameters. Terminal velocities for 85 galactic and LMC Wolf-Rayet stars were obtained by means of the empirical relation between spectral quantities easily measured in low resolution and high-resolution terminal velocity measurements. Temperatures and so-called transformed radii were derived based on available contour plots of spectral characteristics for a grid of NLTE models. The effect of the reddening law on stellar far ultraviolet continua is emphasized and the revised extinction curve towards WR stars is used for dereddening. For the sample of stars attributed to open clusters or associations we construct the stellar distance scale and adopt it for the other WR stars. The remaining fundamental parameters are derived and HR diagram for population I WR stars is presented.  相似文献

From the data on bright stars of different spectral and luminosity classes from the 13-color photometry catalog, the selective extinction of light by the interstellar dust has been studied. The stars from the 1000-pc vicinity of the Sun were investigated. In the optical spectral range, the interstellar extinction curves show systematic deviations from the “λ?1” law, which allows one to sort them into three types. The observed curves of the interstellar dust extinction were compared with the theoretical curves calculated from the reflectance spectra of the asteroids under the approximation of the Rayleigh particles. The calculated extinction curves for the surface material of D-type asteroids and the Tagish Lake carbonaceous chondrite agree rather well with the observed curves of the interstellar extinction of the first type.  相似文献

The intrinsic ultraviolet colours of early type stars have been derived from the rocket data of J. W. Campbell and A. M. Smith. There exists a considerable spread in these colours. One possible source is the predicted rms variation due to the effect of rotation. It is necessary to recognise that rotation is an important source of uncertainty of the interstellar extinction curves derived from the comparison of pairs of stars.Predicted rms errors due to different sources (rotation, uncertainty of MK spectral type, photometric errors) have been compared with the dispersion of the observed extinction data and it is found that part of the large scatter could be due to intrinsic differences of the properties of interstellar grains.  相似文献

Blue Supergiants (BSGs) are the brightest stars in the universe at visual light with absolute magnitudes up to M V =−10 mag. They are ideal stellar objects for the determination of extragalactic distances, in particular, because the perennial uncertainties troubling most of the other stellar distance indicators, interstellar extinction and metallicity, do not affect them. The quantitative spectral analysis of low resolution spectra of individual BSGs provides accurate stellar parameters and chemical composition, which are then used to determine accurate reddening and extinction from photometry for each individual object. Accurate distances can be determined from stellar gravities and effective temperatures using the “Flux Weighted Gravity–Luminosity Relationship (FGLR)”.  相似文献

The feasibility of the determination of the physical conditions in star’s atmosphere and the parameters of interstellar extinction from broad-band photometric observations in the 300–3000 nm wavelength interval is studied using SDSS and 2MASS data. The photometric accuracy of these surveys is shown to be insufficient for achieving in practice the theoretical possibility of estimating the atmospheric parameters of stars based on ugriz and JHKs photometry exclusively because such determinations result in correlations between the temperature and extinction estimates. The uncertainty of interstellar extinction estimates can be reduced if prior data about the temperature are available. The surveys considered can nevertheless be potentially valuable sources of information about both stellar atmospheric parameters and the interstellar medium.  相似文献

We describe Bayesian probabilistic approach to estimating the properties of stars and the interstellar extinction law based on photometric observations and using prior data about the parameters of the stars. The accuracy of the resulting estimates is analyzed in the case of SDSS and 2MASS surveys. We found that our estimates have no systematic deviations in the case of photometric accuracy typical of the surveys considered and errors of prior data of ΔT eff = ±150 K and Δlog g = ±0.5. Note that the error of the estimated interstellar extinction A 0 is of about 0. m 3, and the error of the R 0 estimate depends on extinction and is close 0.2 for moderate A0 values. The fractional error of the estimated stellar angular diameters is close to 10%. A possible application of our approach is to determine the dependence of interstellar extinction on distance using stars closely located in the same sky area.  相似文献

We present the original technique to solve the problems of stellar astronomy using the highresolution spectroscopy and we describe the result of implementation of this technique to determine if the stellar clusterNGC6613 belongs to the SerOB1A association. From the only one estimation available, the distance toNGC6613 equals 1.3 kpc. It is not clear if the cluster linkedwith the SerOB1A association, the distance to which is 2.1 kpc. For nine stars in the region of NGC6613, the radial velocities were measured from the spectra obtained with the NES spectrometer of the 6-m SAORAS telescope, as well as conducted the two-dimensional spectral classification and found their distances with themethod of spectral parallaxes. Seven of nine stars are referred to the cluster members; the average distance to them is 2.2 ± 0.1 kpc. The distance estimates were controlled using the Na I (1) interstellar line profiles. Thus, it was understood that the cluster NGC6613 is a member of the SerOB1A association and its influence should be taken into account, when describing the star formation in the association.  相似文献

From a set of high-resolution spectral observations of late type giant stars we used Doppler imaging to derive time-series temperature maps of the stellar surfaces. Using these temperature maps, it is possible to track the temporal changes of the spot features and derive estimates of the strength and sign of the differential surface rotation of these stars. Looking into the latitudinal changes of the surface maps, it is also possible to derive meridional flows on these stars. But due to the lower accuracy of the latitudes of the reconstructed spot features, the data requirements are higher than for the detection of differential rotation. We study the dependence of the coronal activity index on the stellar rotation velocity. This question has been considered previously for 824 late-type stars on the basis of a consolidated catalogue of soft X-ray fluxes. We carry out a more refined analysis separately for G, K, and M dwarfs. Two modes of activity are clearly identified in them. The first is the saturation mode, is characteristic of young stars, and is virtually independent of their rotation. The second refers to the solar-type activity whose level strongly depends on the rotation period. We show that the transition from one mode to the other occurs at rotation periods of 1.1, 3.3, and 7.2 days for stars of spectral types G2, K4, and M3, respectively. In light of the discovery of superflares on G and K stars from the Kepler spacecraft, the question arises as to what distinguishes these objects from the remaining active late-type stars. We analyze the positions of superflare stars relative to the remaining stars observed by Kepler on the “amplitude of rotational brightness modulation (ARM)—rotation period” diagram. The ARM reflects the relative spots area on a star and characterizes the activity level in the entire atmosphere. G and K superflare stars are shown to be basically rapidly rotating young objects, but some of them belong to the stars with the solar type of activity.  相似文献

Simple theoretical arguments indicate that cooled interstellar gas in bright elliptical galaxies forms into a young stellar population having a bottom-heavy but optically luminous initial mass function extending to approximately 2 M middle dot in circle. When the colors and spectral features of this young population are combined with those of the underlying old stellar population, the apparent ages are significantly reduced, similar to the relatively young apparent ages observed in many elliptical galaxies. Galactic mergers are not required to resupply young stars. The sensitivity of continuous star formation to LB and LX&solm0;LB is likely to account for the observed spread in apparent ages among elliptical galaxies. Local star formation is accompanied by enhanced stellar Hbeta equivalent widths, stronger optical emission lines, more thermal X-ray emission, and lower apparent temperatures in the hot gas. The young stars should cause M&solm0;L to vary with galactic radius, perturbing the fundamental plane of the old stars alone.  相似文献

The distance to the Orion Nebula cluster (ONC) is estimated using the rotational properties of its low-mass pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars. Rotation periods, projected equatorial velocities and distance-dependent radius estimates are used to form an observational sin  i distribution (where i is the axial inclination), which is modelled to obtain the distance estimate. A distance of  440 ± 34 pc  is found from a sample of 74 PMS stars with spectral types between G6 and M2, but this falls to  392 ± 32 pc  when PMS stars with accretion discs are excluded on the basis of their near-infrared excess. Since the radii of accreting stars are more uncertain and probably systematically underestimated, then this closer distance is preferred. The quoted uncertainties include statistical errors and uncertainties due to a number of systematic effects including binarity and inclination bias. This method is geometric and independent of stellar evolution models, though does rely on the assumption of random axial orientations and the Cohen & Kuhi effective temperature scale for PMS stars. The new distance is consistent with, although lower and more precise, than most previous ONC distance estimates. A closer ONC distance implies smaller luminosities and an increased age based on the positions of PMS stars in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram.  相似文献

We present the first results of searching for stellar cycles by analysis of stellar spottedness using an algorithm developed at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. For more than 35 red spotted stars, we find ten targets which demonstrate cyclic variations of average latitudes and total areas of starspots. Activity cycles detected by this method have a typical cycle length about 4–15 years which are analogous to the 11-year solar Schwabe cycle. Most of the program stars demonstrate a rough analogue with the solar butterfly diagram. They show a tendency for the average starspot latitude lowering when the total spot area grows. At the same time these stars show variations of stellar photometric period (which is traced by starspots) with the starspot latitudinal drift analogously to the solar differential rotation effect. We suspect that the starspot latitudinal drift rate and the differential rotation gradient depend on the stellar spectral type.  相似文献

We present here, for the O and B type stars in the Catalogue of Stellar Ultraviolet Fluxes, an approach which does not require a precise knowledge of spectral type and luminosity class for derivingE(B-V) colour excesses. The method is based on the use of an UV-visual two-colour diagram; galactic variations in the interstellar extinction law are analyzed and fully taken into account. Our results have been compared with those derived by using the differences between observed and intrinsic colours for stars with known spectral classification. The very good agreement in a large number of cases (94 per cent) demonstrates that our approach permits the derivation of reliable colour excess values for early type stars even if only a rough spectral classification is available.  相似文献

Summary Cosmic dust grains play an important role for the thermal, dynamical, and chemical structure of the interstellar medium. This is especially true for the star formation process and the late stages of stellar evolution. Dust grains determine the spectral appearance of protostars, very young stellar objects with disk-like structures as well as of evolved stars with circumstellar envelopes.In this review, we will demonstrate that solid particles in interstellar space are both agent and subject of galactic evolution. We will especially discuss the different dust populations in circumstellar envelopes, the diffuse interstellar medium, and the molecular clouds with strong emphasis on the evolutionary aspects and the metamorphosis of these populations.  相似文献

The study of the stellar constituents of star-forming sites in a wide variety of conditions yields the key to interpreting wide-field UV-optical imaging of extended nearby galaxies, and of distant galaxies. We obtained six-band imaging (from far-UV to I) with HST-WFPC2 of 67 sites of recent star formation in eight Local Group galaxies. HST pointings were selected from GALEX wide-field FUV imaging, which traces the young stellar populations. The HST observations were optimized to characterize the hottest, most massive stars in these regions. From the HST photometry, analyzed with stellar model colors, we derived the physical parameters of the massive stars in each field, and of the extinction by interstellar dust. The HST results are used to interpret GALEX UV measurements of SF across the entire galaxies. Our comprehensive photometric study at HST resolution (sub-pc scale in these galaxies) also provides an ideal selection of targets for follow-up spectroscopy with large ground-based telescopes, and in the UV with HST- or WSO-class telescopes, to clarify the influence of metallicity on the properties and the evolution of massive stars.  相似文献

An ongoing SAO RAS program for the 6-m telescope to search for and study luminous blue variable (LBV) candidates in the M31 and M33 galaxies was started in 1997. This paper summarizes the results of our observations over the last 20 years. Over this time, we have a general lists of candidates and obtained photometry and spectroscopy for approximately one hundred stars from the list. A detailed study and classification of LBV candidates were carried out.We alsomonitored spectrally and photometrically the confirmed LBV stars in these galaxies. Based on these results, the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of LBVs and LBV candidates were computed, and the interstellar extinction values, temperature, and luminosity were derived. We propose a new method of confirming the nature of LBV stars. It is based on a special property exhibited only by LBV stars—the constancy of the bolometric luminosity, with except of a rare phase of giant eruption, registered for two historical LBVs in our galaxy and about few dozen extragalactic LBVs. Using this method, we determine the fundamental parameters of these stars: temperature, radius, luminosity, and interstellar extinction. We discuss the nature of several individual LBV stars discovered by us in M33 and the classification of the LBV candidates in M31. Thus, for 20 years of observations we have found four LBV stars in M33; in the M31 galaxy with different methods, we have confirmed seven objects as a LBV class.  相似文献

Long-term homogeneous photometry for 35 classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) in the Taurus–Auriga star-forming region has been analyzed. Reliable effective temperatures, interstellar extinctions, luminosities, radii, masses, and ages have been determined for the CTTS. The physical parameters and evolutionary status of 35 CTTS from this work and 34 weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTS) from previous studies have been compared. The luminosities, radii, and rotation periods of low-mass (0.3–1.1 M ) CTTS are shown to be, on average, greater than those of low-mass WTTS, in good agreement with the evolutionary status of these two subgroups. The mean age of the younger subgroup of WTTS from our sample (2.3 Myr) essentially coincides with the mean duration of the protoplanetary disk accretion phase (2.3 Myr) for a representative sample of low-mass stars in seven young stellar clusters. The accretion disk dissipation time scale for the younger subgroup of CTTS (<4 Myr) in the Taurus–Auriga star-forming region is shown to be no greater than 0.4 Myr, in good agreement with the short protoplanetary disk dissipation time scale that is predicted by present-day protoplanetary disk evolution models.  相似文献

A comparison of observed stellar distributions with a three-component model of the Galaxy is presented. The analysis is based on photometric and photoelectric data obtained along the main Galactic meridian and in two fields near the North Galactic pole (programme MEGA). The assumed model considers the Galaxy as composed of the disk (main sequence and disk red giants), the thick disk and spheroid populations. To model the observed colour distribution, we distinguish main sequence stars and disk red giants as the disk subsystem; white dwarfs, subdwarfs and intermediate giants as the thick disk subsystem; extreme subdwarfs, spheroid giants and horizontal branch stars as the spheroid subsystem. A statistical relation between the apparent and absolute magnitudes of stars which make the maximum contribution to the star counts for a given disk subsystem is derived. In order to achieve the best agreement between the model and observations, we fit the values of the ‘dip’ (aw) of the disk luminosity function, the correction to the absolute magnitude of disk red giants (ΔMVRG) and the expression for interstellar extinction. As the main result, we obtained aw = 0.6 (logarithmic scale) and ΔMVRG = 0.5 mag; the interstellar extinction has to be taken into account by the modified Sandage law.  相似文献
