We compare observations of the eclipsing binary system CM Draconis (hereafter CM Dra) with synthetic spectra computed using the stellar atmosphere code phoenix . High-resolution infrared spectroscopic observations of six 0.05-μm-wide regions between 1.51 and 2.45 μm, combined with previous work, particularly CM Dra's accurately known surface gravity, enable us to estimate its metallicity using detailed spectral synthesis. We find significant discrepancies between the observed and synthetic spectra throughout most of the region emphasizing the need for higher quality atomic data in the infrared. Nevertheless, the     CO bands beyond 2.3 μm seem to be well modelled and metal-sensitive, and thus high-resolution spectra should be a most powerful diagnostic tool for spectroscopic analyses for M dwarfs and brown dwarfs. The CO bands indicate a metallicity of around −1 dex for CM Dra. This result is supported by observations of two M dwarfs of similar spectral type, GJ 699 (Barnard's star) and GJ 725B. This result supports inferences from previous infrared work, although it does not agree with standard evolutionary models or optical analyses, which both suggest an abundance for CM Dra close to that of the Sun.  相似文献

Here, BV (RI)C broad band photometry and intermediate resolution spectroscopy in Hα region are presented for two rapidly rotating late‐type stars: EY Dra and V374 Peg. For a third rapid rotator, GSC 02038‐00293, intermediate resolution Hα spectroscopy and low resolution spectroscopy are used for spectral classification and stellar parameter investigation of this poorly known object. The low resolution spectrum of GSC 02038‐00293 clearly indicates that it is a K‐type star. Its intermediate resolution spectrum can be best fitted with a model with Teff = 4750 K and v sin i = 90 km s–1, indicating a very rapidly rotating mid‐K star. The Hα line strength is variable, indicating changing chromospheric emission on GSC 02038‐00293. In the case of EY Dra and V374 Peg, the stellar activity in the photosphere is investigated from the photometric observations, and in the chromosphere from the Hα line. The enhanced chromospheric emission in EY Dra correlates well with the location of the photospheric active regions, indicating that these features are spatially collocated. Hints of this behaviour are also seen in V374 Peg, but it cannot be confirmed from the current data. The photospheric activity patterns in EY Dra are stable during one observing run lasting several nights, whereas in V374 Peg large night‐tonight variations are seen. Two large flares, one in the Hα observations and one from the broadband photometry, and twelve smaller ones were detected in V374 Peg during the observations spanning nine nights. The energy of the photometrically detected largest flare is estimated to be 4.25 × 1031– 4.3 × 1032 erg, depending on the waveband. Comparing the activity patterns in these two stars, which are just below and above the mass limit of full convection, is crucial for understanding dynamo operation in stars with different internal structures (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The occultation of BD+8°471 by Ceres on 13 November 1984 was observed photoelectrically at 13 sites in Mexico, Florida, and the Caribbean. These observations indicate that Ceres is an oblate spheroid having an equatorial radius of 479.6±2.4 km and a polar radius of 453.4±4.5 km. The mean density of this minor planet is 2.7 g/cm3±5%, and its visual geometric albedo is 0.073. While the surface appears globally to be in hydrostatic equilibrium, firm evidence of real limb irregularities is seen in the data.  相似文献

The first results are reported from a search for activity cycles in stars similar to the sun based on modelling their spotting with an algorithm developed at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. Of the more than thirty program stars, 10 manifested a cyclical variation in their central latitudes and total starspot area. The observed cycles have durations of 4–15 years, i.e., analogous to the 11 year Schwabe sunspot cycle. Most of the stars have a rough analog of the solar butterfly pattern, with a reduction in the average latitude of the spots as their area increases. A flip-flop effect during the epoch of the maximum average latitude is noted in a number of these objects (e.g., the analog LQ Hya of the young sun or the RS CVn-type variable V711 Tau), as well as a reduction in the photometric rotation period of a star as the spots drift toward the equator, an analog of the differential rotation effect in the sun. Unlike in the sun, the observed spot formation cycles do not correlate uniquely with other indicators of activity— chromospheric emission in the CaII HK lines (Be Cet, EK Dra, Dx Leo), H line emission (LQ Hya, VY Ari, EV Lac), or cyclical flare activity (EV Lac). In V833 Tau, BY Dra, EK Dra, and VY Ari short Schwabe cycles coexist with long cycles that are analogous to the Gleissberg solar cycle, in which the spotted area can approach half the entire area of the star.Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 48, No. 1, pp. 29–43 (February 2005).  相似文献

We report on a photometric study of the flareM4.5 dwarf YZ CMi as based on photoelectric observations from the seasons 1972/73, 1979/80 and 1996/97. We suggest spot activity to explain the light and colour curves. Spots are generally 500K cooler than the surrounding photosphere and there are basically two solutions available for the observations: high latitude spot changing slightly basic properties such as radius and latitude or active near‐equatorial (belt‐like) centers represented by three spots. However, the activity centers changed in longitudes (∼180°). The typical spot coverage (inclination i = 60°) is 10‐15% and 5% for the season 1996/97 or ∼25% for the stellar inclination i = 75°. As a by‐product, V curve and (V‐I) and (V‐K) indexes turn out to be most promising in modelling of M‐type stars as far as present calibrations are concerned. (© 2003 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We describe the first X-ray monitoring of a symbiotic star during phases of enhanced activity. AG Dra is a Pop II object with a composite spectrum, characterized by a cool K-type component, prominent high ionization emission lines and a strong UV continuum which is attributed to a hot dwarf companion. Periodic variability of the UV radiation during minimum could be attributed to the orbital motion of the system. In April 1980 HEAO-2 detected an intense, soft X-ray flux from AG Dra, stronger than in other symbiotic stars. After one major outburst of November 1980, which continued until 1983, two more outbursts occurred in February 1985 and January 1986, and coordinated X-ray (EXOSAT) and ultraviolet (IUE) observations were organized to study the behaviour of AG Dra during different activity phases. EXOSAT observations made during decline after the 1985 outburst, revealed a weak X-ray flux in the Thin Lexan filter of the Low Energy dedtector. Observations made during minimum, in June and November 1985, at phases 0.22 and 0.50 of the UV light curve, disclosed the presence of an intense X-ray flux, which was not occulted in November. AG Dra was again observed with EXOSAT in February 1986 when the stellar luminosity was still at maximum. No X-ray flux was detected, in spite of the prominent, high ionization UV spectrum observed with IUE.A detailed discussion of the X-ray and ultraviolet results on AG Dra in the light of possible models is in progress.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. Magnetic activity in the photosphere and chromosphere of the M dwarf EY Dra is studied and possible correlations between the two are investigated using photometric observations in the V and R bands and optical and near infrared spectroscopy. The longitudinal spot configuration in the photosphere is obtained from the V band photometry, and the chromospheric structures are investigated using variations in the Hα line profile and observations of the Paschen β line. The shape of the V band light‐curve indicates two active regions on the stellar surface, about 0.4 in phase apart. The spectroscopic observations show enhanced Hα emission observed close to the phases of the photometrically detected starspots. This could indicate chromospheric plages associated with the photospheric starspots. Some indications of prominence structures are also seen. The chromospheric pressure is limited to log mTR < –4 based on the non‐detection of emission in the Paschen β wavelength region. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The Sutter's Mill (SM) CM chondrite fell in California in 2012. The CM chondrite group is one of the most primitive, consisting of unequilibrated minerals, but some of them have experienced complex processes occurring on their parent body, such as aqueous alteration, thermal metamorphism, brecciation, and solar wind implantation. We have determined noble gas concentrations and isotopic compositions for SM samples using a stepped heating gas extraction method, in addition to mineralogical observation of the specimens. The primordial noble gas abundances, especially the P3 component trapped in presolar diamonds, confirm the classification of SM as a CM chondrite. The mineralogical features of SM indicate that it experienced mild thermal alteration after aqueous alteration. The heating temperature is estimated to be <350 °C based on the release profile of primordial 36Ar. The presence of a Ni‐rich Fe‐Ni metal suggests that a minor part of SM has experienced heating at >500 °C. The variation in the heating temperature of thermal alteration is consistent with the texture as a breccia. The heterogeneous distribution of solar wind noble gases is also consistent with it. The cosmic‐ray exposure (CRE) age for SM is calculated to be 0.059 ± 0.023 Myr based on cosmogenic 21Ne by considering trapped noble gases as solar wind, the terrestrial atmosphere, P1 (or Q), P3, A2, and G components. The CRE age lies at the shorter end of the CRE age distribution of the CM chondrite group.  相似文献

Orbital period changes of four neglected short-period semidetached Algols, SX Dra, AV Del, CU Peg and DK Peg, are presented based on the analysis of their O–C observations. It is found that the three systems, AV Del, CU Peg and DK Peg, show rapid period increase at rates of dP/dt =+3.15 × 10-6, +2.00 × 10-6 and +4.88 × 10-7days/year respectively. For the other system, SX Dra, a possible periodic variation in the orbital period is discovered to superimpose on a very rapid period increase (dP/dt = +1.09 × 10-5 days/year). The period increases of the four Algols can be explained by a mass transfer from the secondary to the more massive primary, which is in agreement with the semi-detached configurations of these systems. However, since the period increases are rather rapid, the mass transfer should be on a dynamical time scale. The cyclic period change in SX Dra suggests that there may exist a third body in this system. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Based on our spectrophotometric observations, we have investigated the envelope of Nova V339 Del in the nebular phase. Our modeling of the Hα line profiles and their comparison with the observed profiles have shown that the Nova envelope consists of circumpolar ejecta and a disk-shaped central component. The inclination of the orbital plane of the binary system, 65°, has been determined in the same way. We have estimated the mean electron density to be ~106 cm-3. Our estimates of the abundances of some chemical elements in the Nova envelope have shown that the concentrations of helium, neon, and iron are nearly solar, while the concentrations of nitrogen and oxygen exceed the solar ones by a factor of 120 ± 60 and 8 ± 1.6, respectively. The mass of the emission envelope in the nebular phase (from 253 to 382 days after the brightness maximum) has been estimated to be ~7 × 10-5 M .  相似文献

During the evening of 9 April and the morning of 10 April 1969, the twilight zenith intensity of the atomic oxygen red line OI(3P-1D) at 6300 Å was measured at the Blue Hill Observatory (42°N, 17°W). At the same time incoherent scatter radar data were being obtained at the Millstone Hill radar site 50 km distant. We have used a diurnal model of the mid-latitude F-region to calculate the ionospheric structure over Millstone Hill conditions similar to 9–10 April 1969. The measured electron temperature, ion temperature, and electron density at 800 km are used as boundary conditions for the model calculations. The diurnal variation of neutral composition and temperature were obtained from the OGO-6 empirical model and the neutral winds were derived from a semiempirical three-dimensional dynamic model of the neutral thermosphere. The solar EUV flux was adjusted to yield reasonable agreement between the calculated and observed ionospheric properties. This paper presents the results of these model computations and calculations of the red line intensity. The 6300 Å emission includes contributions from photoelectron excitation, dissociative recombination, Schumann-Runge photodissociation and thermal electron impact. The variations of these four components for morning and evening twilight between 90–120° solar zenith angles, and their relative contributions to the total 6300 Å emission line intensity, are presented and the total is compared to the observations. For this particular day the Schumann-Runge photodissociation component, calculated using the solar fluxes tabulated by Ackermann (1970), is the dominant component of the morning twilight 6300 Å emission. During evening twilight it is necessary to utilize a lower O2 density than for the morning twilight in order to bring the calculated and observed 6300 Å emission rates into agreement. The implication that there may be a diurnal variation in the O2 density at the base of the thermosphere is discussed in the light of available experimental data and current theoretical ideas.  相似文献

In this paper we present the results of the analysis of the B ‐light curve for the flares of the red dwarf YZ CMin (dM4.5e), which were observed on February of 2002, with the help of the 30‐inch Cassegrain telescope of the Stephanion Observatory, Greece. Discrete Fourier Transform analysis and the use of the Brownian Walk noise enable us to estimate the proper random noise and detect possible weak transient optical oscillations. Our results indicate that: (1) Transient high frequency oscillations occur during the flare event and during the quiet‐star phase as well. (2) The observed frequencies range between 0.0083 Hz (period 2 min) and 0.3 Hz (period 3 s) is not rigorously bounded. The phenomenon is most pronounced during the flare state. (3) During the flare state: (a) Oscillations with period 2 to 1.5 min, 60 s, 11 s, 7.5 s, and 4 s appear around the maximum light state and persist during the whole flare state, (b) from the flare maximum phase on, a progressive increase of oscillations with periods 30 s, 20 s down to 4.0 s is markedly indicated, and (c) at the end of the flare only the oscillation of the pre‐flare state do remain. Our observations are consistent with the phenomenology of impulsively exited oscillations on a coronal magnetic loop and subsequent chromospheric heating by electronic flux at the foot of the loop or/and by soft X‐ray coronal emission. Our observation give evidence that more than one impulsive events may occur in the course of an observed flare (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Abstract— Infrared diffuse reflectance spectra were measured for several thermally metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrites with CI-CM affinities which were recently found from Antarctica. Compared with other CI or CM carbonaceous chondrites, these Antarctic carbonaceous chondrites show weaker absorption bands near 3 μm due to hydrous minerals, and weaker absorption bands near 6.9 μm due to carbonates, interpreted as thermal metamorphic features. These absorption bands also disappear in the spectra of samples of the Murchison (CM) carbonaceous chondrite heated above 500 °C, implying that the metamorphic temperatures of the Antarctic carbonaceous chondrites considered here were higher than about 500 °C. Model calculations were performed to study thermal metamorphism of carbonaceous chondrites in a parent body internally heated by the decay of the extinct nuclide 26Al. The maximum temperature of the interior of a body more than 20 km in radius is 500–700 °C for the bulk Al contents of CI and CM carbonaceous chondrites, assuming a ratio of 26Al/27Al = 5 × 10?6 which has been previously proposed for an ordinary-chondrite parent body. The metamorphic temperatures experienced by the Antarctic carbonaceous chondrites considered here may be attainable by an internally heated body with an 26Al/27Al ratio similar to that inferred for an ordinary-chondrite parent body.  相似文献

Intensity and polarization measures have been made of Saturn in the ultraviolet (0.37 μm) and green (0.57 μm) since 1968, at phase angles which ranged from 0°.0 to 6°.1. During this interval, the tilt of the planet's equatorial plane changed from 11°.2 to 26°.4, with the south pole toward the Earth. The polarization of the disk in the ultraviolet shows a strongly radial pattern at all observed phase angles, with a maximum of about 3.7 × 10?2 at all limbs and a gradual decrease to nearly zero at the center. Where the rings overlap the disk, the better observations show their polarization to be small and in the direction of the equatorial plane. In green light and close to opposition the relatively small polarization of the disk appeared to be radial in 1968, but by 1973 polarization (still radial ) was detected only in the southern hemisphere. In all years the polarization appears to be strongest near the south pole, particularly when the pole is nearest the limb. When the pole is furthest from the limb (tilt = 26°), there is a suggestion that maximum polarization may occur at the pole itself. At large phase angles the polarization along the E-W diameter shows a prominent phase-dependent component of 1.0 × 10?2 in a N-S direction. The intensity profiles in the ultraviolet suggest some transmission of light by ring A and less than about 20% by ring B. A limiting value of 39% was obtained from the polarization data.  相似文献

The detection of extrasolar planets by measuring a photometric drop in the stellar brightness due to a planetary transit can be statistically improved by observing eclipsing binary systems and photometrically improved by observing small component systems. In particular the system CM Draconis, with two dM4 components, would allow the detection of extrasolar planets in the size range of Earth-to-Neptune requiring a ground-based photometric precision of about 0.08% to 1.1% (photometric precision of about 0.3% is routinely achievable with 1-meter class telescopes at the magnitude of CM Draconis, 11.07 inR-filter). In addition, the transit of extrasolar planets in a binary star system provides a unique, quasi-periodic signal that can be cross-correlated with the observational data to detect sub-noise signals. We examine the importance of making such observations to an understanding of the formation and evolution of terrestrial-type planets in main-sequence star systems. Terrestrial planets could have formed with substancially shorter periods in this lower luminosity system, for example, and might be expected to have accreted essentially in the binary orbital plane (however, non-coplanar planets may also eventually be detectable due to precession). We also report on a network of medium-sized telescopes at varying longitudes that have been organized to provide such constraints on terrestrial-planet formation processes and discuss the extention of near-term observations to other possible binary systems, as well. Finally, we discuss a more speculative, future observation that could be performed on the CM Draconis system that would be of exobiological as well as astrophysical interest.  相似文献

As part of an integrated consortium study, we have undertaken O, Cd, Cr, Si, Te, Ti, and Zn whole rock isotopic measurements of the Winchcombe CM2 meteorite. δ66Zn values determined for two Winchcombe aliquots are +0.29 ± 0.05‰ (2SD) and +0.45 ± 0.05‰ (2SD). The difference between these analyses likely reflects sample heterogeneity. Zn isotope compositions for Winchcombe show excellent agreement with published CM2 data. δ114Cd for a single Winchcombe aliquot is +0.29 ± 0.04‰ (2SD), which is close to a previous result for Murchison. δ130Te values for three aliquots gave indistinguishable results, with a mean value of +0.62 ± 0.01‰ (2SD) and are essentially identical to published values for CM2s. ε53Cr and ε54Cr for Winchcombe are 0.319 ± 0.029 (2SE) and 0.775 ± 0.067 (2SE), respectively. Based on its Cr isotopic composition, Winchcombe plots close to other CM2 chondrites. ε50Ti and ε46Ti values for Winchcombe are 3.21 ± 0.09 (2SE) and 0.46 ± 0.08 (2SE), respectively, and are in line with recently published data for CM2s. The δ30Si composition of Winchcombe is −0.50 ± 0.06‰ (2SD, n = 11) and is essentially indistinguishable from measurements obtained on other CM2 chondrites. In conformity with petrographic observations, oxygen isotope analyses of both bulk and micromilled fractions from Winchcombe clearly demonstrate that its parent body experienced extensive aqueous alteration. The style of alteration exhibited by Winchcombe is consistent with relatively closed system processes. Analysis of different fractions within Winchcombe broadly support the view that, while different lithologies within an individual CM2 meteorite can be highly variable, each meteorite is characterized by a predominant alteration type. Mixing of different lithologies within a regolith environment to form cataclastic matrix is supported by oxygen isotope analysis of micromilled fractions from Winchcombe. Previously unpublished bulk oxygen isotope data for 12 CM2 chondrites, when combined with published data, define a well-constrained regression line with a slope of 0.77. Winchcombe analyses define a more limited linear trend at the isotopically heavy, more aqueously altered, end of the slope 0.77 CM2 array. The CM2 slope 0.77 array intersects the oxygen isotope field of CO3 falls, indicating that the unaltered precursor material to the CMs was essentially identical in oxygen isotope composition to the CO3 falls. Our data are consistent with earlier suggestions that the main differences between the CO3s and CM2s reflect differing amounts of water ice that co-accreted into their respective parent bodies, being high in the case of CM2s and low in the case of CO3s. The small difference in Si isotope compositions between the CM and CO meteorites can be explained by different proportions of matrix versus refractory silicates. CMs and COs may also be indistinguishable with respect to Ti and Cr isotopes; however, further analysis is required to test this possibility. The close relationship between CO3 and CM2 chondrites revealed by our data supports the emerging view that the snow line within protoplanetary disks marks an important zone of planetesimal accretion.  相似文献

Observations of aurorae borealis at low latitudes are very rare and are clearly associated with strong geomagnetic storms. Morphologically, they are characterized by a diffuse red colour with no rapid motions. The main aim of this paper is to analyse two hitherto ignored aurorae that were observed at two low-latitude sites, Tenerife (28°N 18°W) and Mexico City (19°N 99°W), in 1770 and 1789, respectively. These observations can give supplementary information about the level of solar activity at those times where direct solar observations were rather scarce. Studying also the behaviour of the heliosphere during this period using different proxies, we find that the open magnetic field better describes auroral occurrences. The variation over time in geomagnetic latitude at the two sites is also calculated.  相似文献

We investigated the petrologic, geochemical, and spectral parameters that relate to the type and degree of aqueous alteration in nine CM chondrites and one CI (Ivuna) carbonaceous chondrite. Our underlying hypothesis is that the position and shape of the 3 μm band is diagnostic of phyllosilicate mineralogy. We measured reflectance spectra of the chondrites under dry conditions (elevated temperatures) and vacuum (10?8 to 10?7 torr) to minimize adsorbed water and mimic the space environment, for subsequent comparison with reflectance spectra of asteroids. We have identified three spectral CM groups in addition to Ivuna. “Group 1,” the least altered group as determined from various alteration indices, is characterized by 3 μm band centers at longer wavelengths, and is consistent with cronstedtite (Fe‐serpentine). “Group 3,” the most altered group, is characterized by 3 μm band centers at shorter wavelengths and is consistent with antigorite (serpentine). “Group 2” is an intermediate group between group 1 and 3. Ivuna exhibits a unique spectrum that is distinct from the CM meteorites and is consistent with lizardite and chrysotile (serpentine). The petrologic and geochemical parameters, which were determined using electron microprobe analyses and microscopic observations, are found to be consistent with the three spectral groups. These results indicate that the distinct parent body aqueous alteration environments experienced by these carbonaceous chondrites can be distinguished using reflectance spectroscopy. High‐quality ground‐based telescopic observations of Main Belt asteroids can be expected to reveal not just whether an asteroid is hydrated, but also details of the alteration state.  相似文献

The Q and R branches of the C2H2 ν5 fundamental, observed in emission in an aircraft spectrum of Jupiter near 750 cm?1, have been analyzed with the help of an improved line listing for this band. The line parameters have been certified in the laboratory with the same interferometer used in the Jovian observations. The maximum mixing ratio of C2H2 is found to be between 5 × 10?8 and 6 × 10?9, depending on the form of its vertical distribution and the temperature structure assumed for the lower stratosphere. Most consistent with observations of both Q and R branches are: (1) distributions of C2H2 with a constant mixing ratio in the stratosphere and a cutoff at a total pressure of 100 mbar or less, and (2) the assumption of a temperature at 10?2 bar which is near 155°K.  相似文献

New far-infrared observations of the NH3 rotation-inversion manifolds in the spectrum of Jupiter have been inverted with the use oftthe detailed ammonia line opacity. A temperature of 160°K at a 1-bar pressure level and a temperature of 105°K for the minimum temperature of the inversion level at 0.15 bars have been derived for gaseous absorption due to NH3, H2, and He. The overall fit to the brightness temperature as a function of frequency σ is within ±1°K for 100 ≤ σ ≤ 400 cm?1 except for the centers of the NH3 rotation-inversion manifolds where for J ≥ 7 the fit is about 5°K too high. In the continuum for 400 ≤ σ ≤ 630 cm?1 the fit is within 2.5°K. Consideration of an ammonia ice haze, photodissociation of NH3 by uv radiation, NH3 abundance variation, different He/H2 ratios, and uncertainties in the data effect the temperatures at 1 bar and the temperature at the inversion layer by <7°K. The presently derived temperature at 1 bar of 160°K is consistent with Jovian interior models which can match the gravitational moment, J2.  相似文献
