Two-dimensional stationary magnetic reconnection models that include a thin Syrovatskii-type current sheet and four discontinuous magnetohydrodynamic flows of finite length attached to its endpoints are considered. The flow pattern is not specified but is determined from a self-consistent solution of the problem in the approximation of a strong magnetic field. Generalized analytical solutions that take into account the possibility of a current sheet discontinuity in the region of anomalous plasma resistivity have been found. The global structure of the magnetic field in the reconnection region and its local properties near the current sheet and attached discontinuities are studied. In the reconnection regime in which reverse currents are present in the current sheet, the attached discontinuities are trans-Alfvénic shock waves near the current sheet endpoints. Two types of transitions from nonevolutionary shocks to evolutionary ones along discontinuous flows are shown to be possible, depending on the geometrical model parameters. The relationship between the results obtained and numerical magnetic reconnection experiments is discussed.  相似文献

We consider a stationary two-dimensional model of magnetic reconnection in plasma. The model includes a current sheet and four MHD shock waves attached to its endpoints. The solution to the problem has been found in an analytical form that admits of efficient numerical implementation. We analyze in detail the structure of the magnetic field in the reconnection region and its variation with model parameters.  相似文献

Yohkoh observations strongly suggest that electron acceleration in solar flares occurs in magnetic reconnection regions in the corona above the soft X-ray flare loops. Unfortunately, models for particle acceleration in reconnecting current sheets predict electron energy gains in terms of the reconnection electric field and the thickness of the sheet, both of which are extremely difficult to measure. It can be shown, however, that application of Ohm's law in a turbulent current sheet, combined with energy and Maxwell's equations, leads to a formula for the electron energy gain in terms of the flare power output, the magnetic field strength, the plasma density and temperature in the sheet, and its area. Typical flare parameters correspond to electron energies between a few tens of keV and a few MeV. The calculation supports the viewpoint that electrons that generate the continuum gamma-ray and hard X-ray emissions in impulsive solar flares are accelerated in a large-scale turbulent current sheet above the soft X-ray flare loops.  相似文献

A model is presented for the penetration into the corona of a new magnetic field of a developing bipolar region and for its interaction with an old large-scale coronal field. An important feature of the model is a reconnection of the old and new fields inside the current sheet arising along the zero line of the total magnetic field calculated in the potential approximation. The magnetic reconnection and accumulation of plasma inside the current sheet can explain the appearance of dense coronal loops and the energy source at their tops. The plasma together with the magnetic lines is flowed into the sheet from both its sides. This fact explains the appearance of coronal cavities above the loops. If the large-scale field gradually decreases with the height, the loop motion is slowed down. The account of the dipolar structure of the magnetic field at large heights explains the possibility of a rapid break of the new field through the corona and the appearance of transients and open field regions - the coronal holes. In this case a fast rising current sheet can be a source of accelerated particles and of type II radio burst, instead of the shock wave considered usually.  相似文献

We present a steady-state model for reconnecting current sheets, which relates the central values of temperature, density and pressure within the sheet to the prescribed external values of these parameters as well as the magnetic field strength and inflow velocity (or reconnection rate). The simplifying feature of our model is the assumption of quasi-one-dimensionality so that only variations across the sheet at the centre of symmetry are considered in detail. The dimensions of the sheet, the spatial profiles and their variation with the prescribed dimensionless parameters are obtained from the model. We also obtain the conditions on the dimensionless parameters for the existence of a steady state. A beta-limitation is discovered, such that steady reconnection is impossible when the plasma beta is too small. Also, the sheet dimensions may be an order of magnitude larger than previously thought. Finally, these general results are applied to the emerging flux model for solar flares. A state of thermal nonequilibrium ensues when the current sheet between the emerging and ambient flux reaches a critical height. The effect of the beta-limitation is to make this critical height decrease with increasing magnetic field strength. Now at A.W.R.E., Aldermaston, Berks., England.  相似文献

We study a nonplanar model of magnetic reconnection associated with conical slow shocks, assuming that the shock surfaces are two identical cones with circular cross sections symmetrical about the ±x-axis. In the inflow region upstream of the shocks, two oppositely directed magnetic fields are separated by a current sheet. The model treats the current sheet as a tangential discontinuity and treats shocks and tangential discontinuity as surfaces of zero thickness. The dynamical structure of the global magnetic field in the continuous regions is studied using compressible, non-resistive MHD equations. In the inflow region, nonplanar magnetic field lines first move toward the current sheet. Near the sheet, the middle sections of the field lines become highly flattened, almost parallel to the sheet. Eventually, then oppositely directed field lines merge across the tangential discontinuity between the two shocks, and the magnetic lines are reconnected at the intersection of the shock and the tangential discontinuity. Reconnected magnetic lines are carried away at high speeds by the MHD flow in the outflow region, downstream of the shocks.  相似文献

A transient flow system containing several streams and shocks associated with the Bastille Day 2000 solar event was observed by the WIND and ACE spacecraft at 1 AU. Voyager 2 (V2) at 63 AU observed this flow system after it moved through the interplanetary medium and into the distant heliosphere, where the interstellar pickup protons strongly influence the MHD structures and flow dynamics. We discuss the Voyager 2 magnetic and plasma observations of this event. Increases in the magnetic field strength B, density N, temperature T and speed V were observed at the front of a stream at V2, consistent with presence of a shock related to the Bastille Day shock at 1 AU. However, the jumps occurred in a 16.9-hour data gap, so that the shock was not observed directly, and the properties of the candidate shock cannot be determined precisely. The candidate shock was followed by a merged interaction region (MIR) that moved past V2 for at least 10 days. The first part of this MIR contains a structure that might be a magnetic cloud. Just ahead of the shock there was an abrupt increase in density associated with a decrease in temperature such that the solar wind thermal pressure was constant across it. Just behind the shock there was an abrupt decrease in density associated with a net increase in magnetic field strength. This appears to be a pressure balanced structure in which the interstellar pickup protons make a significant contribution.  相似文献

Magnetic reconnection can take place between two plasma regions with antiparallel magnetic field components. In a time-dependent reconnection event, the plasma outflow region consists of a leading bulge region and a trailing reconnection layer. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) discontinuities, including rotational discontinuities, can be formed in both the bulge region and the trailing layer. In this paper, we suggest that the rotational discontinuities observed in the solar wind may be generated by magnetic reconnection associated with microflares in coronal holes. The structure of the reconnection layer is studied by solving the one-dimensional Riemann problem for the evolution of an initial current sheet after the onset of magnetic reconnection as well as carrying out two-dimensional MHD simulations. As the emerging magnetic flux reconnects with ambient open magnetic fields in the coronal hole, rotational discontinuities are generated in the region with open field lines. It is also found that in the solar corona with a low plasma beta ( 0.01), the magnetic energy is converted through magnetic reconnection mostly into the plasma bulk-flow energy. Since more microflares will generate more rotational discontinuities and also supply more energy to the solar wind, it is expected that the number of rotational discontinuities observed in the solar wind would be an increasing function of solar wind speed. The observation rate of rotational discontinuities generated by microflares is estimated to be dN RD/dt - f/63 000 s (f > 1) at 1 AU. The present mechanism favors the generation of rotational discontinuities with a large shock normal angle.  相似文献

Interaction of weak shock waves with a current sheet is investigated by a two-dimensional numerical magnetohydrodynamic model. In accordance with solar coronal conditions, a ratio of thermal to magnetic pressures of 0.1 and a shock Alfvén Mach number slightly above 1 are considered. It is found that even weak shock waves trigger magnetic field reconnection in current sheets. Based on this result, it is suggested that drifting chains of type I radio bursts are radio manifestations of the interactions of weakly super-Alfvénic shock waves with pre-existing current sheets distributed in an active region. This model of type I noise storms is then discussed in connection with the concept of nanoflares (localized reconnections) and the heating of the solar corona.  相似文献

Simple models for the MHD eruption of a solar prominence are presented, in which the prominence is treated as a twisted magnetic flux tube that is being repelled from the solar surface by magnetic pressure forces. The effects of different physical assumptions to deal with this magneto-hydrodynamically complex phenomenon are evaluated, such as holding constant the prominence current, radius, flux or twist or modelling the prominence as a current sheet. Including a background magnetic field allows the prominence to be in equilibrium initially with an Inverse Polarity and then to erupt due to magnetic non-equilibrium when the background magnetic field is too small or the prominence twist is too great. The electric field at the neutral point below the prominence rapidly increases to a maximum value and then declines. Including the effect of gravity also allows an equilibrium with Normal Polarity to exist. Finally, an ideal MHD solution is found which incorporates self-consistently a current sheet below the prominence and which implies that a prominence will still erupt and form a current sheet even if no reconnection occurs. When reconnection is allowed it is, therefore, driven by the eruption.

An experimental simulation of planetary magnetospheres is being developed to investigate the formation of collisionless shocks and their effects. Two experimental situations are considered. In both, the solar wind is simulated by laser ablation plasmas. In one case, the “solar wind” flows across the magnetic field of a high-current discharge. In the other, a transverse magnetic field is embedded in the plasma flow, which interacts with a conductive obstacle. The ablation plasma is created using the “Tomcat” laser, currently emitting 5 J in a 6 ns pulse at 1 μm wavelength and irradiance above 1013 W/cm2. The “Zebra” z-pinch generator, with load current up to 1 MA and voltage up to 3.5 MV produces the magnetic fields. Hydrodynamic modeling is used to estimate the plasma parameters achievable at the front of the plasma flow and to optimize the experiment design. Particle-in-cell simulations reveal details of the interaction of the “solar wind” with an external magnetic field, including flow collimation and heating effects at the stopping point. Hybrid simulations show the formation of a bow shock at the interaction of a magnetized plasma flow with a conductor. The plasma density and the embedded field have characteristic spatial modulations in the shock region, with abrupt jumps and fine structure on the skin depth scale.  相似文献

A model of forced magnetic reconnection in a force-free magnetic field is considered, which allows calculation of the magnetic energy release during the current sheet reconnection. The dependence of this energy on characteristics of the magnetic configuration has been studied, and it was found that the released energy becomes very large when the field is near the marginal tearing stability. A persistent plasma heating provided by ongoing external driving and internal reconnection is also derived. It shows a typical relaxation-type dependence on the driving frequency, with dissipation becoming most efficient when the time-scales of the driving and reconnection are comparable. Possible implications of the obtained results for the problem of solar coronal heating are discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The magnetized solar wind carries a large amount of energy but only a small fraction of it enters the magnetosphere and powers its dynamics. Numerous observations show that the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is a key parameter regulating the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction. The main factor determining the amount of energy extracted from the solar wind flow by the magnetosphere is the plasma flow structure in the region adjacent to the sunward side of the magnetopause. While compared to the energy of the solar wind flow the IMF magnetic energy is relatively weak, it is considerably enhanced in a thin layer next to the dayside magnetopause variously called the plasma depletion layer or magnetic barrier. Important features of this barrier/layer are (i) a pile-up of the magnetic field with (ii) a concurrent decrease of density, (iii) enhancement of proton temperature anisotropy, (iv) asymmetry of plasma flow caused by magnetic field tension, and (v) characteristic wave emissions (ion cyclotron waves). Importantly, the magnetic barrier can be considered as an energy source for magnetic reconnection. While the steady-state magnetic barrier has been extensively examined, non-steady processes therein have only been addressed by a few authors. We discuss here two non-steady aspects related to variations of the magnetic barrier caused by (i) a north-to-south rotation of the IMF, and (ii) by pulses of magnetic field reconnection at the magnetopause. When the IMF rotates smoothly from north-to-south, a transition layer is shown to appear in the magnetosheath which evolves into a thin layer bounded by sharp gradients in the magnetic field and plasma quantities. For a given reconnection rate and calculated parameters of the magnetic barrier, we estimate the duration and length scale of a reconnection pulse as a function of the solar wind parameters. Considering a sudden decrease of the magnetic field near the magnetopause caused by the reconnection pulse, we study the relaxation process of the magnetic barrier. We find that the relaxation time is longer than the duration of the reconnection pulse for large Alfvén-Mach numbers.  相似文献

We describe how a local plasma structure can be changed by a transverse shear flow using numerical simulation to investigate the disturbance process near the magnetopause. The results show that magnetic field lines are bent by transverse shear flow disturbance near the current sheet region. There are multiple bipolar structures of the normal magnetic field in the numerical simulation. We term this new feature as K-point magnetic reconnection, realistic for discussing space observations.  相似文献

The problem of pressure limitations on the rate of flux pile-up magnetic reconnection is studied. We first examine the recent suggestion of Jardine and Allen (1998) for moderating the build-up of magnetic pressure in the current sheet by considering inflows with nonzero vorticity. An analytic argument shows, however, that unbounded magnetic pressures in the limit of small resistivities can be avoided only at the cost of unphysical dynamic pressures in the plasma. Hence, the pressure limitation on the reconnection rate in a low-beta plasma cannot be avoided completely. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that reconnection can be more rapid in a new solution that balances the build-up in dynamic pressure against both the plasma and magnetic pressures. This exact MHD solution has the characteristics of merging driven by the coalescence instability. The maximum energy release rate of the model is capable of explaining a modest solar flare.  相似文献

We present the results of charged particle orbit calculations in prescribed electric and magnetic fields motivated by magnetic reconnection models. Due to the presence of a strong guide field, the particle orbits can be calculated in the guiding centre approximation. The electromagnetic fields are chosen to resemble a reconnecting magnetic current sheet with a localised reconnection region. An initially Maxwellian distribution function in the inflow region can develop a beam-like component in the outflow region. Possible implications of these findings for acceleration scenarios in solar flares will be discussed.  相似文献

This work is devoted to study the magnetic reconnection instability under solar spicule conditions. Numerical study of the resistive tearing instability in a current sheet is presented by considering the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) framework. To investigate the effect of this instability in a stratified atmosphere of solar spicules, we solve linear and non-ideal MHD equations in the x?z plane. In the linear analysis it is assumed that resistivity is only important within the current sheet, and the exponential growth of energies takes place faster as plasma resistivity increases. We are interested to see the occurrence of magnetic reconnection during the lifetime of a typical solar spicule.  相似文献

Analysis of the Interball-1 spacecraft data (1995 – 2000) has shown that the solar wind ion flux sometimes increases or decreases abruptly by more than 20% over a time period of several seconds or minutes. Typically, the amplitude of such sharp changes in the solar wind ion flux (SCIFs) is larger than 0.5×108 cm−2 s−1. These sudden changes of the ion flux were also observed by the Solar Wind Experiment (SWE), on board the Wind spacecraft, as the solar wind density increases and decreases with negligible changes in the solar wind velocity. SCIFs occur irregularly at 1 AU, when plasma flows with specific properties come to the Earth’s orbit. SCIFs are usually observed in slow, turbulent solar wind with increased density and interplanetary magnetic field strength. The number of times SCIFs occur during a day is simulated using the solar wind density, magnetic field, and their standard deviations as input parameters for a period of five years. A correlation coefficient of ∼0.7 is obtained between the modelled and the experimental data. It is found that SCIFs are not associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs), corotating interaction regions (CIRs), or interplanetary shocks; however, 85% of the sector boundaries are surrounded by SCIFs. The properties of the solar wind plasma for days with five or more SCIF observations are the same as those of the solar wind plasma at the sector boundaries. One possible explanation for the occurrence of SCIFs (near sector boundaries) is magnetic reconnection at the heliospheric current sheet or local current sheets. Other probable causes of SCIFs (inside sectors) are turbulent processes in the slow solar wind and at the crossings of flux tubes.  相似文献
