The joint Japan/US/UK Hinode mission includes the first large-aperture visible-light solar telescope flown in space. One component of the Focal Plane Package of that telescope is a precision spectro-polarimeter designed to measure full Stokes spectra with the intent of using those spectra to infer the magnetic-field vector at high precision in the solar photosphere. This article describes the characteristics of the flight hardware of the Hinode Spectro-Polarimeter, and summarizes its in-flight performance.  相似文献

The lunar photometric function, which describes the dependency of the observed radiance on the observation geometry, is used for photometric correction of lunar visible/near-infrared data. A precise photometric correction parameter set is crucial for many applications including mineral identification and reflectance map mosaics. We present, for the first time, spectrally continuous photometric correction parameters for both sides of the Moon for wavelengths in the range 0.5-1.6 μm and solar phase angles between 5° and 85°, derived from Kaguya (SELENE) Spectral Profiler (SP) data. Since the measured radiance also depends on the surface albedo, we developed a statistical method for selecting areas with relatively uniform albedos from a nearly 7000-orbit SP data set. Using the selected data set, we obtained empirical photometric correction parameter sets for three albedo groups (high, medium, and low). We did this because the photometric function depends on the albedo, especially at phase angles below about 20° for which the shadow hiding opposition effect is appreciable. We determined the parameters in 160 bands and discovered a small variation in the opposition effect due to the albedo variation of mafic mineral absorption. The consistency of the photometric correction was checked by comparing observations made at different times of the same area on the lunar surface. Variations in the spectra obtained were lower than 2%, except for the large phase angle data in mare. Lastly, we developed a correction method for low solar elevation data, which is required for high latitude regions. By investigating low solar elevation data, we introduced an additional correction method. We used the new photometric correction to generate a 1° mesh global lunar reflectance map cube in a wavelength range of 0.5-1.6 μm. Surprisingly, these maps reveal that high latitude (?75°) regions in both the north and south have much lower spectral continuum slopes (color ratio r1547.7nm/r752.8nm ? 1.8) than the low and medium latitude regions, which implies lower degrees of space weathering.  相似文献

We study 7530 sunspot umbrae and pores measured by the Hinode Spectropolarimeter (SP) between November 2006 and November 2012. We primarily seek confirmation of the long term secular decrease in the mean magnetic field strength of sunspot umbrae found by Penn and Livingston (IAU Symp. 273, 126, 2011) between 1998 and 2011. The excellent SP photometric properties and full vector magnetic field determinations from full-Stokes Milne–Eddington inversions are used to address the interrelated properties of the magnetic field strength and brightness temperature for all umbral cores. We find non-linear relationships between magnetic field strength and umbral temperature (and continuum contrast), as well as between umbral radius and magnetic field strength. Using disambiguated vector data, we find that the azimuths measured in the umbral cores reflect an organization weakly influenced by Joy’s law. The large selection of umbrae displays a log-normal size spectrum similar to earlier solar cycles. Influenced by the amplitude of the solar cycle and the non-linear relationship between umbral size and core magnetic field strength, the distribution of core magnetic field strengths, fit most effectively with a skew-normal distribution, shows a weak solar cycle dependence. Yet, the mean magnetic field strength does not show a significant long term trend.  相似文献

High precision center-limb spectrograms of the K i resonance doublet line at λ 7699 Å were used to study the line formation and to determine the abundance of potassium in the solar atmosphere. The LTE assumption is not valid for these lines. Synthetic profiles computed in NLTE reproduce very well the observed center-limb line behaviour and yield log? K = 5.14±0.10 for the solar abundance of potassium (on the scale of log? H = 12 for Hydrogen).  相似文献

The parameters of the magnetic flux distribution inside low-latitude coronal holes (CHs) were analyzed. A statistical study of 44 CHs based on Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)/MDI full disk magnetograms and SOHO/EIT 284?Å images showed that the density of the net magnetic flux, B net, does not correlate with the associated solar wind speeds, V x . Both the area and net flux of CHs correlate with the solar wind speed and the corresponding spatial Pearson correlation coefficients are 0.75 and 0.71, respectively. A possible explanation for the low correlation between B net and V x is proposed. The observed non-correlation might be rooted in the structural complexity of the magnetic field. As a measure of the complexity of the magnetic field, the filling factor, f(r), was calculated as a function of spatial scales. In CHs, f(r) was found to be nearly constant at scales above 2 Mm, which indicates a monofractal structural organization and smooth temporal evolution. The magnitude of the filling factor is 0.04 from the Hinode SOT/SP data and 0.07 from the MDI/HR data. The Hinode data show that at scales smaller than 2 Mm, the filling factor decreases rapidly, which means a multifractal structure and highly intermittent, burst-like energy release regime. The absence of the necessary complexity in CH magnetic fields at scales above 2 Mm seems to be the most plausible reason why the net magnetic flux density does not seem to be related to the solar wind speed: the energy release dynamics, needed for solar wind acceleration, appears to occur at small scales below 1 Mm.  相似文献

Fabry-Perot interferometer measurements of the Doppler shifts and widths of the nightglow 630.0 nm line at Laurel Ridge Observatory, Pennsylvania are presented for the period 1975 to 1979, covering both solar minimum and solar maximum conditions. The F-region neutral wind vectors vn and temperatures Tn deduced from these measurements show both day-to-day changes and overall seasonal patterns in the nocturnal variations during geomagnetically quiet conditions. Divergence in both the meridional and zonal horizontal flow is noted on occasion. The vn results are compared with models including only solar EUV heating and those with EUV plus a high latitude heat source. The aggregate vn data for solar cycle minimum conditions agree best with model predictions for winter zonal and equinoctal meridional winds and worst for winter meridional and summer zonal winds. At solar cycle maximum the predicted, rapid transition at equinox from summer to winter wind patterns and vice-versa is observed. The Tn data are in reasonable agreement with the MSIS model predictions.  相似文献

We study the solar-activity and solar-polarity dependence of galactic cosmic-ray intensity (CRI) on the solar and heliospheric parameters playing a significant role in solar modulation. We utilize the data for cosmic-ray intensity as measured by neutron monitors, solar activity as measured by sunspot number (SSN), interplanetary plasma/field parameters, solar-wind velocity [V] and magnetic field [B], as well as the tilt of the heliospheric current sheet [Λ], and we analyze these data for Solar Cycles 20?–?24 (1965?–?2011). We divide individual solar cycles into four phases, i.e. low, high, increasing, and decreasing solar activity. We perform regression analysis to calculate and compare the CRI-response to changes in different solar/interplanetary parameters during
  1. different phases of solar activity and
  2. similar activity phases but different polarity states.
We find that the CRI-response is different during negative (A<0) as compared to positive (A>0) polarity states not only with SSN and Λ but also with B and V. The relative CRI-response to changes in various parameters, in negative (A<0) as compared to positive (A>0) state, is solar-activity dependent; it is ≈?2 to 3 times higher in low solar activity, ≈?1.5 to 2 times higher in moderate (increasing/decreasing) activity, and it is nearly equal in high solar-activity conditions. Although our results can be ascribed to the preferential entry of charged particles via the equatorial/polar regions of the heliosphere as predicted by drift models, these results also suggest that we should look for any polarity-dependent response of solar-wind and transport parameters in modulating CRI in the heliosphere.  相似文献

We study solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) during the deep solar minimum, including the declining phase, of solar cycle 23 and compare the results of this unusual period with the results obtained during similar phases of the previous solar cycles 20, 21, and 22. These periods consist of two epochs each of negative and positive polarities of the heliospheric magnetic field from the north polar region of the Sun. In addition to cosmic-ray data, we utilize simultaneous solar and interplanetary plasma/field data including the tilt angle of the heliospheric current sheet. We study the relation between simultaneous variations in cosmic ray intensity and solar/interplanetary parameters during the declining and the minimum phases of cycle 23. We compare these relations with those obtained for the same phases in the three previous solar cycles. We observe certain peculiar features in cosmic ray modulation during the minimum of solar cycle 23 including the record high GCR intensity. We find, during this unusual minimum, that the correlation of GCR intensity is poor with sunspot number (correlation coefficient R=?0.41), better with interplanetary magnetic field (R=?0.66), still better with solar wind velocity (R=?0.80) and much better with the tilt angle of the heliospheric current sheet (R=?0.92). In our view, it is not the diffusion or the drift alone, but the solar wind convection that is the most likely additional effect responsible for the record high GCR intensity observed during the deep minimum of solar cycle 23.  相似文献

We have studied the extent to which various transport processes affect the dispersal of a gas artificially injected into the night-time atmosphere at F-region altitudes. In addition to diffusion, we have found that nonlinear acceleration, viscous stress, and thermospheric winds affect the dispersal of the injected gas. The magnitude of the effect depends on the atmospheric density, which is a function of solar activity. For an injected H2 gas, non-linear acceleration and viscous stress rapidly become more important than diffusion above about 300 km for low solar activity (T = 750K), 340 km for moderate solar activity (T = 1000K), and 400 km for high solar activity (T = 1500K). For an injected H2O gas, the corresponding altitudes are 350, 400, and 470 km for low, moderate and high solar activity, respectively. The effect of nonlinear acceleration and viscous stress is to retard the expansion of the injected gas. Thermospheric winds of 150–400 m s?1 are important at altitudes near and below the F-region peak electron density. These winds act to transport the injected gas in the wind direction and this affects the shape and temporal development of the subsequent ionospheric hole. Because the H2O diffusion coefficient is smaller than the H2 diffusion coefficient, winds are more important for H2O than for H2.  相似文献

The variation of the geomagnetic activity index Ap at the IMF sector boundaries (+ to ? and ? to +) has been studied for three solar cycles, separating data into vernal and autumnal equinoxes. It was found that a reported increase in Ap as an effect of a Hale boundary can be better attributed to the occurrence of a negative IMF Bz component in the geocentric solar magnetospheric coordinate system and to the occurrence of high speed solar wind streams.  相似文献

The ESA astrometric mission Gaia, due for a launch in late 2011, will observe a huge number of asteroids (∼350,000 brighter than V<20) with an unprecedented positional precision (at the sub-milliarcsecond level). This precision will play an important role for the mass determination of about hundred minor planets with a relative precision better than 50%. Presently, due primarily to their perturbations on Mars, the uncertainty in the masses of the largest asteroids is the limiting factor in the accuracy of the solar system ephemerides. Besides, such high precision astrometry will enable to derive direct measurements of the masses of the largest asteroids which are of utmost significance for the knowledge of their physical properties. The method for computing the masses is based on the analysis of orbital perturbations during close encounters between massive asteroids (perturbers) and several smaller minor planets (targets). From given criteria of close approaches selection, we give the list of asteroids for which the mass can be determined, and the expected precision of these masses at mission completion. We next study the possible contribution of the ground-based observations for the mass determination in some special observation cases of close approaches.  相似文献

The energy and altitude distributions for nitrogen atoms produced from photodissociation of N2 and dissociative recombination of N+2 have been computed for the low and high solar activity martian thermospheres. We find that the fraction of nitrogen atoms with E>Eesc at the exobase is ∼2.5% for photodissociation as compared to ∼22.6% for dissociative recombination. However, the peak magnitudes of the production rate profiles for dissociative recombination are a factor of ∼1000 and ∼200 times smaller than those of photodissociation at low and high solar activities, respectively. Thus, our findings suggest that photodissociation of N2 is the dominant escape mechanism for atomic nitrogen for both the low and high solar activity martian thermospheres. The general consensus in the field prior to these research results was that dissociative recombination of N+2 was the main escape mechanism. We find that it is the dissociation of N2 along repulsive states that results in the production of very energetic nitrogen atoms.  相似文献

We present results of the dual-frequency radio sounding of the Venusian ionosphere carried out by the Venera 9 and 10 satellites in 1975. Thirteen height profiles of electron density for different solar zenith angles varying from 10 to 87° have been obtained by analyzing the refraction bending of radiorays in the sounded ionssphere. The main maximum of electron density at a height of 140–150 km depends on the solar zenith angle and is 1.4 to 5 × 105 cm?3. The lower maximum is determined definitely to be at ~130 km high. In the main and lower maxima the electron density variations with solar zenith angle are in good agreement with the Chapman layer theory. For the first time it is found that the height of the upper boundary for the daytime ionosphere (hi) depends regularly on the solar zenith angle. At Z < 60°, hi does not exceed 300 km while at Z > 60°, it increases with Z and comes up to ~ 600 km at Z ~ 80°.  相似文献

A new value of the solar photospheric abundance of iron, independent of line-shape parameters, is derived. Our analysis is based on a study of 40 weak infrared lines (0.85<λ<2.5 μ) for which theoretical oscillator strengths (calculated with configuration interactions taken into account) have recently been computed by Kurucz (1974). The abundance obtained, A Fe = 7.57±0.11 (in the usual scale where log N H = 12.00) is in agreement with the ‘high’ solar values recently reported in the literature and with the meteoritic abundance.  相似文献

We employ annually averaged solar and geomagnetic activity indices for the period 1960??C?2001 to analyze the relationship between different measures of solar activity as well as the relationship between solar activity and various aspects of geomagnetic activity. In particular, to quantify the solar activity we use the sunspot number R s, group sunspot number R g, cumulative sunspot area Cum, solar radio flux F10.7, and interplanetary magnetic field strength IMF. For the geomagnetic activity we employ global indices Ap, Dst and Dcx, as well as the regional geomagnetic index RES, specifically estimated for the European region. In the paper we present the relative evolution of these indices and quantify the correlations between them. Variations have been found in: i) time lag between the solar and geomagnetic indices; ii) relative amplitude of the geomagnetic and solar activity peaks; iii) dual-peak distribution in some of solar and geomagnetic indices. The behavior of geomagnetic indices is correlated the best with IMF variations. Interestingly, among geomagnetic indices, RES shows the highest degree of correlation with solar indices.  相似文献

Related investigations concerning the source and occurrence of Pi 2 micropulsations indicate that (1) Pi 2 peak occurrence is near 2230 LMT, before (after) which the initial disturbance vector orientation is primarily northeast (northwest) in the northern hemisphere; (2) peak occurrence is near 2330 (2030) LMT during intervals of low (high) magnetic activity; (3) also, solar wind pressure is directed at a streaming angle of 188° (165°) during low (high) magnetic activity; (4) Pi 2 rate of occurrence peaks when 1 + ? Kp ? 2?. The diurnal variation of occurrence and of the initial disturbance vector orientation may be caused by a magnetospheric Pi 2 source located near the 2230 LMT meridian. Comparison of Pi 2 peak occurrence time and solar wind variations with magnetic activity indicates possible relationships of the two. The fact that processes generating Pi 2 appear optimum, when 1 + ? Kp ? 2?, is consistent with the inverse relation of the yearly Pi 2 occurrence frequency to solar activity.  相似文献

This paper describes occurrence probabilities and patterns of trans-equatorial proton (TEP), deuteron (TED) and helium (TEH) whistler from the ISIS-2 satellite in time compressed dynamic spectra. It is shown that the TEP whistlers have high occurrence probability in an active solar period, while the TED whistler has low occurrence probability. In a quiet solar period, the TEP whistler has a relatively lower occurrence probability than the TED whistler. The TEP whistler in a quiet solar period shows a strong seasonal variation. That is a higher occurrence probability in the winter than in the summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The curve of occurrence probability of the TED whistler has a valley (no occurrence) at the noon in a solar active period. The minimum occurrence probabilities, which depend on geomagnetic activity appear at about KP = 4-5. These phenomena seem to be explained by using the bouncing surface diagram of multicomponent and inhomogeneous plasmas with various proton density. The spectral pattern of trans-equatorial ion whistlers and calculation of an approximate equation with regard to deuteron effect show that relative proton densities to electrons NP/Ne decrease with increasing solar activity.  相似文献

Values of the Nikol??skii geometric flattening index of the solar corona, H, have been collected for 77 total solar eclipses from 1860 to 2010. The dependence of the H index on the Wolf number and the phase of solar activity is studied. The H index is found to take values in the range 0.9 to 2.5 and to anticorrelate with solar activity: the maximum values of the index are observed at solar minima and the minimum values are observed at solar maxima. In addition, the correlations between the H index and the Ludendorff photometric flattening index a + b and between the H index and extent of polar ray systems along the limb are investigated.  相似文献
