In this paper we study nonaxisymmetric oscillations of thin twisted magnetic tubes taking the density variation along the tube into account. We use the approximation of the zero-beta plasma. The magnetic field outside the tube is straight and homogeneous; however, it is twisted inside the tube. We assume that the azimuthal component of the magnetic field is proportional to the distance from the tube axis and that the tube is only weakly twisted (i.e., the ratio of the azimuthal and axial components of the magnetic field is small). Using the asymptotic analysis we show that the eigenmodes and eigenfrequencies of the kink and fluting oscillations are described by a classical Sturm – Liouville problem for a second-order ordinary differential equation. The main result is that the twist does not affect the kink mode.  相似文献

We studied nonlinear kink oscillations of a thin magnetic tube using the cold-plasma approximation. We assumed that the plasma density varies along the tube but does not vary in the radial direction. Using the regular perturbation method, we show that the nonlinearity does not affect the oscillation amplitude. We also calculated the nonlinear correction to the oscillation frequency, which is proportional to the oscillation amplitude squared. As an example, we considered nonlinear oscillations of a coronal magnetic loop of half-circle shape in an isothermal atmosphere with equal plasma temperatures inside and outside the loop.  相似文献

We consider the damping mechanisms for the radial oscillations of solar coronal loops in the approximation of a thin magnetic flux tube. We show that the free tube oscillations can have a high Q if the plasma density inside the magnetic flux tube is much higher than the density outside. We analyze the effect of radial coronal-loop magnetic-field oscillations on the modulation of the microwave radiation from solar flares. In the case of a nonthermal gyrosynchrotron mechanism, the fluxes from optically thin and optically thick sources are modulated in antiphase. Based on our model, we diagnose the flare plasma. For the event of May 23, 1990, we estimate the spectral index for accelerated electrons, α≈4.4, and the magnetic-field strength in the region of energy release, B≈190 G.  相似文献

We study global non-axisymmetric oscillation modes trapped near the inner boundary of an accretion disc. Observations indicate that some of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in the luminosities of accreting compact objects (neutron stars, black holes and white dwarfs) are produced in the innermost regions of accretion discs or boundary layers. Two simple models are considered in this paper. The magnetosphere–disc model consists of a thin Keplerian disc in contact with a uniformly rotating magnetosphere with and low plasma density, while the star–disc model involves a Keplerian disc terminated at the stellar atmosphere with high density and small density scaleheight. We find that the interface modes at the magnetosphere–disc boundary are generally unstable due to Rayleigh–Taylor and/or Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities. However, differential rotation of the disc tends to suppress Rayleigh–Taylor instability, and a sufficiently high disc sound speed (or temperature) is needed to overcome this suppression and to attain net mode growth. On the other hand, Kelvin–Helmholtz instability may be active at low disc sound speeds. We also find that the interface modes trapped at the boundary between a thin disc and an unmagnetized star do not suffer Rayleigh–Taylor or Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, but can become unstable due to wave leakage to large disc radii and, for sufficiently steep disc density distributions, due to wave absorption at the corotation resonance in the disc. The non-axisymmetric interface modes studied in this paper may be relevant to the high-frequency QPOs observed in some X-ray binaries and in cataclysmic variables.  相似文献

Using time evolutions of the relevant linearized equations, we study non-axisymmetric oscillations of rapidly rotating and superfluid neutron stars. We consider perturbations of Newtonian axisymmetric background configurations and account for the presence of superfluid components via the standard two-fluid model. Within the Cowling approximation, we are able to carry out evolutions for uniformly rotating stars up to the mass-shedding limit. This leads to the first detailed analysis of superfluid neutron star oscillations in the fast rotation regime, where the star is significantly deformed by the centrifugal force. For simplicity, we focus on background models where the two fluids (superfluid neutrons and protons) corotate, are in β-equilibrium and co-exist throughout the volume of the star. We construct sequences of rotating stars for two analytical model equations of state. These models represent relatively simple generalizations of single fluid, polytropic stars. We study the effects of entrainment, rotation and symmetry energy on non-radial oscillations of these models. Our results show that entrainment and symmetry energy can have a significant effect on the rotational splitting of non-axisymmetric modes. In particular, the symmetry energy modifies the inertial mode frequencies considerably in the regime of fast rotation.  相似文献

We investigate the MHD waves in a double magnetic flux tube embedded in a uniform external magnetic field. The tube consists of a dense hot cylindrical cord surrounded by a co-axial shell. The plasma and the magnetic field are taken to be uniform inside the cord and also inside the shell. Two slow and two fast magnetosonic modes can exist in the thin double tube. The first slow mode is trapped by the cord, the other is trapped by the shell. The oscillations of the second mode have opposite phases inside the cord and shell. The speeds of the slow modes propagating along the tube are close to the tube speeds inside the cord and the shell. The behavior of the fast modes depends on the magnitude of Alfvén speed inside the shell. If it is less than the Alfvén speed inside the cord and in the environment, then the fast mode is trapped by the shell and the other may be trapped under the certain conditions. In the opposite case when the Alfvén speed in the shell is greater than those inside the cord and in the environment, then the fast mode is radiated by the tube and the other may also be radiated under certain conditions. The oscillation of the cord and the shell with opposite phases is the distinctive feature of the process. The proposed model allows to explain the basic phenomena connected to the coronal oscillations: i) the damping of oscillations stipulated in the double tube model by the radiative loss, ii) the presence of two different modes of perturbations propagating along the loop with close speeds, iii) the opposite phases of oscillations of modulated radio emission, coming from the near coronal sources having sharply different densities.  相似文献

We consider kink oscillations of thin magnetic tubes with the equilibrium density discontinuous in the axial direction. The aim is to find out what boundary conditions have to be used at a contact discontinuity where the equilibrium density jumps. At a contact discontinuity perturbations of all quantities but the density have to be continuous. However, in the thin-tube approximation, all these conditions cannot be satisfied simultaneously. It is shown that in the thin-tube approximation, there is a boundary layer with the thickness of the order of the tube radius that embraces the contact discontinuity. In this boundary layer the variation of the loop displacement and its axial derivative is negligible. In contrast, the total pressure variation in the boundary layer is very strong. Hence, the correct boundary conditions at a contact discontinuity in the thin-tube approximation are the continuity of the tube displacement and its axial derivative.  相似文献

Dwarf nova oscillations (DNOs) have been observed in a number of cataclysmic variables. I propose that these oscillations could be produced by a non-axisymmetric bulge at the transition between the optically thick disc and the optically thin boundary layer region. This would naturally explain the observed oscillation periods and the dependence of the oscillation amplitude on photon energy. The transition radius moves inward and outward with changing mass accretion rate, which explains the correlation between period and flux, and the time-scale for period variations. The underlying cause of the non-axisymmetry that produces the oscillations is not known, so it is not possible to predict the oscillation amplitude from first principles.  相似文献

We consider a model of a coronal loop in the form of a cord surrounded by a coaxial shell. Two slow magnetosonic waves longitudinally propagate within a thin flux tube on the m=0 cylindrical mode with velocities close to the tube velocities in the cord and the shell. One wave propagates inside the cord, while the other propagates inside the shell. A peculiar feature of the second wave is that the plasma in the cord and the shell oscillates with opposite phases. There are two fast magnetosonic waves on each of the cylindrical modes with m>0. If the plasma density in the shell is lower than that in the surrounding corona, then one of the waves is radiated into the corona, which causes the loop oscillations to be damped, while the other wave is trapped by the cord, but can also be radiated out under certain conditions. If the plasma density in the shell is higher than that in the cord, then one of the waves is trapped by the shell, while the other wave can also be trapped by the shell under certain conditions. In the wave trapped by the shell and the wave radiated by the tube, the plasma in the cord and the shell oscillates with opposite phases.  相似文献

In this paper, the slow MHD mode oscillations of the coronal plasma are studied. The aim is to identify the effect of structuring (such as magnetic field, temperature, density, and pressure) on the frequencies of oscillations. We modelled the coronal medium as a low-β plasma with longitudinally density and pressure stratifications and a weakly inhomogeneous magnetic field varied slowly with height and radial directions. The linearized ideal MHD equations reduced to a single Klein–Gordon differential equation for square of oscillatory frequencies. The eigenfunctions and analytical dispersion relations are derived. The dispersion relations were solved numerically. In the case of uniform magnetic field, the previous studies verified. Our numerical results show that, the frequencies and their ratios are very sensitive functions of pressure scale height, and slightly varying functions of inhomogeneity parameter of magnetic field. By changing the magnetic field strength between the apex and footpoints of the loop about 50%, the frequencies ratio are changed about 5%. We concluded that, the pressure scale height and temperature gradient are first order effects and inhomogeneity of magnetic field is a second order effect on the slow mode oscillations.  相似文献

We study torsional Alfvén oscillations of magnetars, that is neutron stars with a strong magnetic field. We consider the poloidal and toroidal components of the magnetic field and a wide range of equilibrium stellar models. We use a new coordinate system  ( X , Y )  , where     and     and a 1 is the radial component of the magnetic field. In this coordinate system, the one+two-dimensional evolution equation describing the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs), see Sotani et al., is reduced to a one+one-dimensional equation where the perturbations propagate only along the y -axis. We solve the one+one-dimensional equation for different boundary conditions and the open magnetic field lines, that is magnetic field lines that reach the surface and there match up with the exterior dipole magnetic field as well as closed magnetic lines, i.e. magnetic lines that never reach the stellar surface. For the open field lines, we find two families of QPO frequencies: a family of 'lower' QPO frequencies which is located near the x -axis and a family of 'upper' frequencies located near the y -axis. According to Levin, the fundamental frequencies of these two families can be interpreted as the turning point of the continuous spectrum. We find that the upper frequencies are multiples of the lower ones by a constant equalling  2 n + 1  . For the closed lines, the corresponding factor is   n + 1  . By using these relations, we can explain both the lower and the higher observed frequencies in SGR 1806−20 and SGR 1900+14.  相似文献

This paper considers the structural properties of a sunspot-like magnetic flux tube which lacks perfect axisymmetry. The flux tube is taken to be in static equilibrium with an atmosphere in a uniform gravity. Assuming the departure from axisymmetry to be slight, the equations for the first order non-axisymmetric part of the equilibrium are derived in cylindrical coordinates. These first order equations reduce to a linear second order hyperbolic partial differential equation in the r-z plane. Whereas Cauchy type boundary conditions are appropriate for hyperbolic equations, physical considerations dictate the specification of boundary conditions on a closed surve for our problem of interest. The construction of solutions to this boundary value problem is illustrated with three analytically soluble cases, where the zero-order axisymmetric equilibria are chosen to have magnetic field geometry of different complexity. A physical discussion of the results is given.  相似文献

In this paper the observed 1.4–1.6 s quasi-periodic oscillations in the spike radiation of the microwave outburst of 1981 May 16 are analysed in teras of MHD waves. We point out that the fast magnetoacoustic waves (“sausage” mode) propagating inside and outside a loop can modulate the magnetic field and the pitch angle distribution of the electron beams in the source region. The growth rate of electron-cyclotron-maser instability is then affected to give rise to the quasi-periodic oscillations. Quantitative estimates of relevant physical parameters are given.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the conditions of realization and stability of kink modes with azimuthal wave numbers m = ±1 in a cylindrical plasma filament with a twisted magnetic field and a homogeneous current along its axis. We assume that there are vertical constant magnetic fields inside and outside of the filament; the filament is surrounded by current-free plasma; and outside of its boundary, the azimuthal magnetic field decreases inversely in proportion to the distance from the filament’s border. The dispersion equations for stable and unstable modes are obtained in the approximation of “thin” plasma filament. The analysis of the equations for the case of discontinuous vertical magnetic field at the filament’s boundary is provided. The conditions of propagation of the wave modes have been defined. We have obtained that the unstable modes with m = ±1 cannot be realized. The results of this work can be applied to the interpretation of the solar magnetic flux tubes’ behavior using measurements provided by the spacecrafts.  相似文献

We present results of nonlinear, two-dimensional, numerical simulations of magneto-acoustic wave propagation in the photosphere and chromosphere of small-scale flux tubes with internal structure. Waves with realistic periods of three to five minutes are studied, after horizontal and vertical oscillatory perturbations are applied to the equilibrium model. Spurious reflections of shock waves from the upper boundary are minimized by a special boundary condition. This has allowed us to increase the duration of the simulations and to make it long enough to perform a statistical analysis of oscillations. The simulations show that deep horizontal motions of the flux tube generate a slow (magnetic) mode and a surface mode. These modes are efficiently transformed into a slow (acoustic) mode in the v A<c S atmosphere. The slow (acoustic) mode propagates vertically along the field lines, forms shocks, and remains always within the flux tube. It might effectively deposit the energy of the driver into the chromosphere. When the driver oscillates with a high frequency, above the cutoff, nonlinear wave propagation occurs with the same dominant driver period at all heights. At low frequencies, below the cutoff, the dominant period of oscillations changes with height from that of the driver in the photosphere to its first harmonic (half period) in the chromosphere. Depending on the period and on the type of the driver, different shock patterns are observed.  相似文献

The dispersion properties of the sausage eigenmodes of oscillations in a thin magnetic flux tube are numerically analyzed in terms of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The period of the modes accompanied by the emission of MHD waves into the surrounding medium, which leads to acoustic damping of oscillations, is determined by the radius of the tube, not by its length. The dissipation of the sausage oscillations in comparatively high (?0.7R ) and tenuous (?6 × 108 cm?3) coronal loops is considered. Their Q factor has bound found to be determined by the acoustic damping mechanism. The ratio of the plasma densities outside and inside the loop and the characteristic height of the emission source have been estimated by assuming the quasi-periodic pulsations of meter-wavelength radio emission to be related to the sausage oscillations.  相似文献

Nonlinear modulated both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric MHD wave propagation in magnetic flux tubes is studied. In the cylindrical coordinates, ordinary differential equation with cubic nonlinearity is derived. In both cases of symmetry, the equation has solitary solutions. Modulation stability of the solutions is studied. The results of the study show that the propagation of axisymmetric soliton causes rising of plasma temperature in peripheral regions of a magnetic flux tube. In the non-axisymmetric case, it gives also temperature rising effect. Results of theoretical study are examined on idealized model of chromospheric spicule.  相似文献

We consider the non-axisymmetric, dynamical instability of a thin accretion torus with a non-zero shift of corotation radius. By numerical method we evaluated the wave number dependence of the linear rate of growth of instability and the co-rotation shift. The rate of growth is only slightly affected by the non-zero co-rotation shift, while the dispersion relation in the case of a shift is the same as that of the linear KdV equation. This shows that the “planet-like” solution found in numerical simulations of thin tori is very probably analogous to the soliton solution of the KdV equation.  相似文献

We report high-sensitivity dual-frequency observations of radio oscillations from GRS 1915+105 following the decay of a major flare event in 2000 July. The oscillations are clearly observed at both frequencies, and the time-resolved spectral index traces the events between optically thin and thick states. While previously anticipated from sparse observations and simple theory, this is the first time a quasi-periodic signal has been seen in the radio spectrum, and is a clear demonstration that flat radio spectra can arise from the combination of emission from optically thick and thin regions. In addition, we measure the linear polarization of the oscillations, at both frequencies, at a level of about  1–2  per cent, with a flat spectrum. Cross-correlating the two light curves we find a mean delay, in the sense that the emission at 8640 MHz leads that at 4800 MHz, of around 600 s. Comparison with frequency-dependent time-delays reported in the literature reveals that this delay is variable between epochs. We briefly discuss possible origins for a varying time-delay, and suggest possible consequences.
