The rate of production of NO in the thermosphere is expected to vary greatly over the course of an 11-year solar cycle because the fluxes of both extreme ultraviolet radiation and auroral particles are known to increase substantially from solar minimum to solar maximum. In the stratosphere, NO participates in a catalytic cycle which constitutes the dominant photochemical destruction mechanism for stratospheric ozone. If appreciable long range transport of NO from the thermosphere to the upper stratosphere occurs, its effects should therefore be manifested in upper atmospheric ozone density variations over the 11-year solar cycle. In this paper, model predictions of the seasonal and latitudinal variations in upper stratospheric O3 associated with NO transport for different levels of solar activity are compared to satellite observations of upper stratospheric ozone abundances.  相似文献

The response of the stratosphere and lower mesosphere to quasi-eleven-year solar activity cycle (indicated by sunspot variations) is studied by using temperature data obtained from rockets which are mostly based on datasonde system throughout the decade 1969–1978. It is suggested that the solar trace is evident at wintertime in the strato-mesosphere over low and middle latitudes. At summertime in the lower mesosphere over high latitudes the solar trace is absent. During springtime the solar signal appears over low latitudes and diminishes to the middle and high latitudes. The reverse occurs at falltime. The observed stratospheric temperature and ozone variations during the solar activity cycle are possibly within model calculations of UV and solar particle enhancements at solar maximum.  相似文献

The possibility that snowmelt could have provided liquid water for valley network formation early in the history of Mars is investigated using an optical-thermal model developed for dusty snowpacks at temperate latitudes. The heating of the postulated snow is assumed to be driven primarily by the absorption of solar radiation during clear sky conditions. Radiative heating rates are predicted as a function of depth and shown to be sensitive to the dust concentration and the size of the ice grains while the thermal conductivity is controlled by temperature, atmospheric pressure, and bulk density. Rates of metamorphism indicate that fresh fine-grained snow on Mars would evolve into moderately coarse snow during a single summer season. Results from global climate models are used to constrain the mean-annual surface temperatures for snow and the atmospheric exchange terms in the surface energy balance. Mean-annual temperatures within Martian snowpacks fail to reach the melting point for all atmospheric pressures below 1000 mbar despite a predicted temperature enhancement beneath the surface of the snowpacks. When seasonal and diurnal variations in the incident solar flux are included in the model, melting occurs at midday during the summer for a wide range of snow types and atmospheric pressures if the dust levels in the snow exceed 100 ppmw (parts per million by weight). The optimum dust concentration appears to be about 1000 ppmw. With this dust load, melting can occur in the upper few centimeters of a dense coarse-grained snow at atmospheric pressures as low as 7 mbar. Snowpack thickness and the thermal conductivity of the underlying substrate determine whether the generated snow-melt can penetrate to the snowpack base, survive basal ice formation, and subsequently become available for runoff. Under favorable conditions, liquid water becomes available for runoff at atmospheric pressures as low as 30 to 100 mbar if the substrate is composed of regolith, as is expected in the ancient cratered terrain of Mars.  相似文献

An AOST Fourier spectrometer of the Phobos-Soil project is intended for studying Mars and Phobos by means of measurements of IR radiation spectra of the Martian surface and atmosphere, the Phobos surface, and the spectrum of solar radiation passing through the Martian atmosphere on its limb. The main scientific problems to be solved with the spectrometer on Mars are measurements of methane content, search for minor constituents, and study of diurnal variations in the temperature and atmospheric aerosol. The spectrometer will also study the Martian and Phobos surface both remotely and after landing. The spectral range of the instrument is 2.5?C25 ??m, the best spectral resolution (without apodization) is 0.6 cm?1, and the instantaneous field of view is 2.5°. The recording time of one spectrum is equal to 5 s in solar observations and 50 s in observations of Mars and Phobos. The instrument has self-thermal stabilization and two-axis pointing systems, as well as a built-in radiation source for flight calibration. The spectrometer mass is 4 kg, and power consumption is up to 13 W. Scientific problems, measurement modes, and, briefly, engineering implementation of the experiment are discussed in this work.  相似文献

The patrol of Martian water vapor carried out with the echelle-coudé scanner at McDonald Observatory during the 1972–1974 apparition has produced 469 individual photoelectric scans of Doppler-shifted Martian H2O lines. Almost an entire Martian year was covered during the 1972–1974 period (Ls = 118?269° and 301?80°). Three types of coverage have been obtained: (1) regular—the slit placed pole to pole on the central meridian; (2) latitudinal—the slit placed parallel to the Martian equator at various latitudes; (3) diurnal—the slit placed parallel to the terminator at several times during a Martian day measured from local noon. Both the seasonal and diurnal effects seem to be controlled by the insolation and not the local topography with respect to the 6.1 mb surface. A slight negative correlation with elevation was noted which improved during the seasons of greater H2O content. The previous seasonal behavior has been confirmed and amplified. The following are the primary conclusions: (1) The planetwide abundance is low (5?15 μm of ppt H2O) during both equinoctical periods. (2) The maximum abundance of about 40 μm occurs in each hemisphere after solstice at about 40° latitude in that hemisphere. (3) The latitude of the maximum amount in the N-S distribution precedes the latitude of maximum insolation by 10–20° of latitude. (4) During the “drier” seasons (5–20 μm) near the equinoxes on Mars, the atmospheric water vapor changes by a factor of 2–3x over a diurnal cycle with the maximum near local noon. (5) The effects of the 1973 dust storm during the southern summer reduced the amount of water vapor over the southern hemisphere regions to 3–8 μm.  相似文献

A one-dimensional photochemical-transport model for the martian lower atmosphere has been developed to study the diurnal cycles of wave-photochemistry coupling. The model self-consistently calculates water vapor mixing ratio profiles, which exhibit strong vertical and diurnal variations mainly due to the high sensitivity of the saturation vapor pressure to temperature variation. The dynamical coupling of water vapor caused by the temperature variation induced by tidal waves, vertical transport parameterized by eddy diffusion, and linear relaxation introduced in condensation-sublimation processes all have similar timescales of diurnal variation. This leads to a significant asymmetric distribution of water vapor concentration as a function of local time. As a result, the net effect of the temperature variation by tidal waves depletes the water vapor concentration in its diurnal mean. The coupling processes also deplete the diurnally averaged HOx concentration, which in turn leads to significant enhancements of both ozone concentration and the associated airglow emissions in the martian atmosphere. The model also shows explicitly the importance of photochemical-transport coupling to the airglow emissions and its implications in species retrievals when the photochemical times of the excited states are comparable to the timescale of diurnal variation.  相似文献

Over an 18-year period, seasonal changes in the north-south asymmetry of polarization at high latitudes of Jupiter have been revealed by polarimetric observations in blue light. The average seasonal difference in the polarization degree between north and south is positive and equal to about 0.5%. There is some relationship between seasonal variations in the observed difference and the seasonal north-south asymmetry in solar radiation incident on Jupiter's atmosphere. There are two maxima on the observed seasonal curve, falling on the jovian spring and autumn and coinciding correspondingly with positive and negative maxima of the heliographic latitude of Jupiter. Two possible explanations are discussed: seasonal changes in insolation and/or time-dependent magnetospheric influence on the polar events.  相似文献

We present here the annual behavior of atmospheric water vapor on Mars, as observed by the OMEGA spectrometer on board Mars Express during its first martian year. We consider all the different features of the cycle of water vapor: temporal evolution, both at a seasonal and at a diurnal scale; longitudinal distribution; and the vertical profile, through the variations in the saturation height. We put our results into the context of the current knowledge on the water cycle through a systematic comparison with the already published datasets. The seasonal behavior is in very good agreement with past and simultaneous retrievals both qualitatively and quantitatively, within the uncertainties. The average water vapor abundance during the year is ∼10 pr. μm, with an imbalance between northern and southern hemisphere, in favor of the first. The maximum of activity, up to 60 pr. μm, occurs at high northern latitudes during local summer and shows the dominance of the northern polar cap within the driving processes of the water cycle. A corresponding maximum at southern polar latitudes during the local summer is present, but less structured and intense. It reaches ∼25 pr. μm at its peak. Global circulation has some influence in shaping the water cycle, but it is less prominent than the results from previous instruments suggest. No significant correlation between water vapor column density and local hour is detected. We can constrain the amount of water vapor exchanged between the surface and the atmosphere to few pr. μm. This is consistent with recent results by OMEGA and PFS-LW. The action of the regolith layer on the global water cycle seems to be minor, but it cannot be precisely constrained. The distribution of water vapor on the planet, after removing the topography, shows the already known two-maxima system, over Tharsis and Arabia Terra. However, the Arabia Terra increase is quite fragmented compared with previous observations. A deep zone of minimum separates the two regions. The saturation height of water vapor is mainly governed by the variations of insolation during the year. It is confined within 5-15 km from the surface at aphelion, while in the perihelion season it stretches up to 55 km of altitude.  相似文献

The seasonal variation of neutron emissions from Mars in different spectral intervals measured by the HEND neutron detector for the entire Martian year are analyzed. Based on these data, the spatial variations of the neutron emissions from the planet are globally mapped as a function of season, and the dynamics of seasonal variation of neutron fluxes with different energies is analyzed in detail. No differences were found between seasonal regimes of neutron fluxes in different energy ranges in the southern hemisphere of Mars, while the regime of fast neutrons (with higher energies) during the northern winter strongly differs from that during the southern winter. In winter (L s = 270°–330°), the fast neutron fluxes are noticeably reduced in the northern hemisphere (along with the consecutive thickening of the seasonal cap of solid carbon dioxide). This provides evidence of a temporary increase in the water content in the effective layer of neutron generation. According to the obtained estimates, the observed reduction of the flux of fast neutrons in the effective layer corresponds to an increase in the water abundance of up to 5% in the seasonal polar cap (70°–90°N), about 3% at mid-latitudes, and from 1.5 to 2% at low latitudes. The freezing out of atmospheric water at the planetary surface (at middle and high latitudes) and the hydration of salt minerals composing the Martian soil are considered as the main processes responsible for the temporary increase in the water content in the soil and upper layer of the seasonal polar cap. The meridional atmospheric transport of water vapor from the summer southern to the winter northern hemisphere within the Hadley circulation cell is a basic process that delivers water to the subsurface soil layer and ensures the observed scale of the seasonal increase in water abundance. In the summer northern hemisphere, the similar Hadley circulation cell transports mainly dry air masses to the winter southern hemisphere. The point is that the water vapor becomes saturated at lower heights during aphelion, and the bulk of the atmospheric water mass is captured in the near-equatorial cloudy belt and, thus, is only weakly transferred to the southern hemisphere. This phenomenon, known as the Clancy effect, was suggested by Clancy et al. (1996) as a basic mechanism for the explanation of the interhemispheric asymmetry of water storage in permanent polar caps. The asymmetry of seasonal meridional circulation of the Martian atmosphere seems to be another factor determining the asymmetry of the seasonal water redistribution in the “atmosphere-regolith-seasonal polar caps” system, found in the peculiarities of the seasonal regime of the neutron emission of Mars.  相似文献

Insight into the causes of the annual and semi-annual ozone oscillations may be gained from the analysis of photochemical model behavior. In this paper, the monthly variations of the ozone mixing ratio computed by the two-dimensional photochemical model of Garcia and Solomon (1983, J. geophys. Res. 88, 1379) are Fourier-analyzed and compared with SBUV observations of ozone mixing ratio. Remarkably good qualitative agreement between the model calculations and the observations is found. Analysis of computed transport and chemical production and destruction rates reveals the causes of the modelled seasonal ozone variations.

It will be shown that at high latitudes and low altitudes, modelled ozone abundances increase in the winter due to transport and decrease in the summer due to chemical destruction. In the middle stratosphere, the calculated annual ozone variation is largely due to the annual variation in the odd-oxygen production rate, and in the upper stratosphere, the computed annual ozone variation is caused by the large calculated annual oscillation in temperature. Comparison between the model and observations suggests that the equatorial semi-annual oscillation above 10 mb is caused mainly by the semi-annual temperature and wind oscillation (SAO). Below 10 mb the computed equatorial ozone variation is caused by the increased rates of odd-oxygen production associated with the semi-annual zenith crossings of the Sun. Finally, the calculated polar semi-annual ozone oscillations are found to be caused by modulation of the radiatively driven middle-stratospheric ozone variation by temperature dependent chemical destruction processes.  相似文献

A two-dimensional numerical model with coupled photochemistry and dynamics has been used to investigate the response of the middle atmosphere (16–116 km) to changes in solar activity over the 11-year solar cycle. Model inputs that vary with solar cycle include solar radiation, cosmic ray and auroral ionization rates and the flux of NOx at the model's upper boundary. In this study, the results of model runs for solar cycle minimum and maximum conditions are compared. In the stratosphere, using currently accepted estimates of changes in solar radiation at wavelengths longer than 180 nm, only small responses in ozone, temperature and zonal winds are obtained. On the other hand, changes at shorter wavelengths, and the effects of particle precipitation, lead to large variations in the abundances of trace species in the thermosphere and upper mesosphere. In particular, very large abundances of NOx are produced above 90 km by auroral particle precipitation. Considerable amounts of NOx are transported subsequently to the stratosphere by the global mean meridional circulation. It is shown that this excess NOx can lead to significant decreases in ozone concentrations at high latitudes and that it may explain observations of nitrate deposition in Antarctic snow.  相似文献

The concept is described of deducing the temperature and constituent profile of a planetary atmosphere from orbiter measurements of the planet's ir limb radiance profile. Expressions are derived for the weighting functions associated with the limb radiance profile for a Goody random band model. Analysis of the weighting functions for the Martian atmosphere indicates that a limb radiance profile in the 15 μm CO2 band can be used to determine the Martian atmospheric temperature profile from 20 to 60 km. Simulation of the Martian limb radiance profile in the rotational water vapor band indicates that Martian water vapor mixing ratios can be inferred from limb radiance observations in a water vapor band.  相似文献

We have used data from five neutron monitor stations with primary rigidity (Rm) ranging from 16 GeV to 33 GeV to study the diurnal variations of cosmic rays over the period: 1965–1986 covering one 22-year solar magnetic cycle. The heliosphere interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and plasma hourly measurements taken near Earth orbit, by a variety of spacecraft, are also used to compare with the results of solar diurnal variation. The local time of maximum of solar diurnal diurnal variations displays a 22-year cycle due to the solar polar magnetic field polarities. In general, the annual mean of solar diurnal amplitudes, magnitude of IMF and plasma parameters are found to show separte solar cycle variations. Moreover, during the declining period of the twenty and twenty-ne solar cycles, large solar diurnal amplitudes are observed which associated with high values of solar wind speed, plasma temperature and interplanetary magnetic field magnitude B3.  相似文献

A time-dependent one-dimensional model of Saturn's ionosphere has been developed as an intermediate step towards a fully coupled Saturn Thermosphere-Ionosphere Model (STIM). A global circulation model (GCM) of the thermosphere provides the latitude and local time dependent neutral atmosphere, from which a globally varying ionosphere is calculated. Four ion species are used (H+, H+2, H+3, and He+) with current cross-sections and reaction rates, and the SOLAR2000 model for the Sun's irradiance. Occultation data from the Voyager photopolarimeter system (PPS) are adapted to model the radial profile of the ultraviolet (UV) optical depth of the rings. Diurnal electron density peak values and heights are generated for all latitudes and two seasons under solar minimum and solar maximum conditions, both with and without shadowing from the rings. Saturn's lower ionosphere is shown to be in photochemical equilibrium, whereas diffusive processes are important in the topside. In agreement with previous 1-D models, the ionosphere is dominated by H+ and H+3, with a peak electron density of ∼104 electrons cm−3. At low- and mid-latitudes, H+ is the dominant ion, and the electron density exhibits a diurnal maximum during the mid-afternoon. At higher latitudes and shadowed latitudes (smaller ionizing fluxes), the diurnal maximum retreats towards noon, and the ratio of [H+]/[H+3] decreases, with H+3 becoming the dominant ion at altitudes near the peak (∼1200-1600 km) for noon-time hours. Shadowing from the rings leads to attenuation of solar flux, the magnitude and latitudinal structure of which is seasonal. During solstice, the season for the Cassini spacecraft's encounter with Saturn, attenuation has a maximum of two orders of magnitude, causing a reduction in modeled peak electron densities and total electron column contents by as much as a factor of three. Calculations are performed that explore the parameter space for charge-exchange reactions of H+ with vibrationally excited H2, and for different influxes of H2O, resulting in a maximum diurnal variation in electron density much weaker than the diurnal variations inferred from Voyager's Saturn Electrostatic Discharge (SED) measurements. Peak values of height-integrated Pedersen conductivities at high latitudes during solar maximum are modeled to be ∼42 mho in the summer hemisphere during solstice and ∼18 mho during equinox, indicating that even without ionization produced by auroral processes, magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling can be highly variable.  相似文献

A model for exchange of water from the atmosphere to condensing CO2 caps is developed. The rate of water condensation in the caps is assumed to be proportional to the meridional heat flux. It follows that the amount of water condensed in the caps varies inversely with the amount of CO2 condensed. The seasonal phase of the release of water from the caps is not consistent with observed variations in the abundance of atmospheric water. Seasonal variations of atmospheric water abundance are most consistent with vapor exchange between the atmosphere and permafrost in the subtropics. Although water condensation in semipermanent caps is normally very slow, it may take place at a much faster rate at unusually high atmospheric temperatures, such as those produced by absorption of solar radiation by airborne dust.  相似文献

The factors which affect fusion and evaporation of ice under a variety of Martian surface conditions are examined. It is found that a frost or ice deposit will pass through a transient liquid phase in temperate latitudes during summer, if the ice is partly or wholly dust covered. The barrier to free gaseous diffusion which the surface material presents is, under favorable (and definable) conditions, more than adequate to force the water to remain in the liquid state until its evaporation is complete. Furthermore, for a realistic range of regolith particle sizes and porosities, and depths of burial of the ice, the lifetime of the ice can be considerably longer than the duration of a single diurnal warming cycle. Current knowledge of the seosonal and diurnal behavior of the atmospheric vapor is summarized and discussed as it relates to the availability of surface ice at temperate latitudes.  相似文献

The seasonal evolution of the H2O snow in the Martian polar caps and the dynamics of water vapor in the Martian atmosphere are studied. It is concluded that the variations of the H2O mass in the polar caps of Mars are determined by the soil thermal regime in the polar regions of the planet. The atmosphere affects water condensation and evaporation in the polar caps mainly by transferring water between the polar caps. The stability of the system implies the presence of a source of water vapor that compensates for the removal of water from the atmosphere due to permanent vapor condensation in the polar residual caps. The evaporation of the water ice that is present in the surface soil layers in the polar regions of the planet is considered as such a source. The annual growth of the water-ice mass in the residual polar caps is estimated. The latitudinal pattern of the seasonal distribution of water vapor in the atmosphere is obtained for the stable regime.Translated from Astronomicheskii Vestnik, Vol. 38, No. 6, 2004, pp. 497–503.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2004 by Aleshin.  相似文献

The diurnal and seasonal variations of H+, He+, N+, O+ and Ne are analyzed at 1400-km altitude. Using longitudinally averaged observations of ISIS-2 (April 1971 to December 1972), the ion and electron densities are decomposed via spherical harmonics and Fourier series into time-independent, seasonal and diurnal terms. The time-independent terms of H+ and He+ show a plateauor trough-like structure at medium to low latitudes and a strong decrease towards the poles; N+ and O+, on the other hand, yield an almost inverse picture with a density increase at high latitudes. All constituents, except He+, show at polar latitudes an enhancement during local summer conditions and a depletion during local winter conditions; He+, however, exhibits a winter bulge and a density minimum during local summer. The diurnal variations are strongly latitude dependent; while the amplitudes (relative) of H+, He+, and Ne are rather small, the heavier ions N+ and O+ show a deep minimum early in the morning and a high but flat maximum during daytime.  相似文献

A quantitative model of the state, distribution, and migration of water in the shallow Martian regolith is presented. Reported results are confined to the region of the planet greater than 40° lat. The calculations take into account (1) expected thermal variations at all depths, latitudes, and times resulting from seasonal and astronomically induced insolation variations; (2) variations in atmospheric PH2O and PCO2 resulting from polar insolation variations and regolith adsorptive equilibria; (3) feedback effects related to latent heat and albedo variations resulting from condensation of atmospheric constituents; (4) two possible regolith mineralogies; (5) variable total H2O content of the regolith; (6) kinetics of H2O transport through the Martian atmosphere and regolith; and (7) equilibrium phase partitioning of H2O between the condensed, adsorbed, and vapor phases. Results suggest that the adsorptive capacity of the regolith is important in controlling the state and distribution of high-latitude H2O; unweathered mafic silicates favor the development of shallow ground ice at all temperate and polar latitudes, while heavily weathered clay-like regolith materials leads to a deeper ground ice interface and far more extensive quantities of adsorbed H2O. The capacity of the high-latitude regolith for storage of H2O and the total mass of H2O exchanged between the atmosphere, polar cap, and subsurface over an obliquity cycle is found to be relatively independent of mineralogy. The maximum exchanged volume is found to be 3.0 × 104 km3 of ice per cycle. Implications for the history of the polar caps and the origin of the layered terrain are discussed. Results also suggest that seasonal thermal waves act to force adsorbed H2O into the solid phase over a wide variety of latitude/obliquity conditions. Seasonal phase cycling of regolith H2O is most common at high latitudes and obliquities. Such phase behavior is highly dependent on regolith mineralogy. In a highly weathered regolith, adsorbed H2O is annually forced into the solid phase at all latitudes ≥40° at obliquities greater than approximately 25°. Seasonal adsorption-freezing cycles which are predicted here may produce geomorphologic signatures not unlike those produced by terrestrial freeze-thaw cycles.  相似文献

We analyze the flux of epithermal neutrons from the Martian surface recorded by the Russian High-Energy Neutron Detector (HEND) from February 19 through December 19, 2002. The HEND was installed onboard the NASA 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft and is designed to measure neutron fluxes with energies above 1 eV. Over the period of observations, statistically significant variations in the flux of epithermal (10–100 keV) neutrons were found in the northern and southern polar caps. The largest neutron-flux variations were found at subpolar latitudes, where the relative difference between the summer and winter values can reach severalfold. This correlation becomes weaker with increasing distance from the poles. Thus, the relative change in the neutron flux near the 60° parallel is slightly more than 10%. We assume that the detected variations result from the global circulation of atmospheric carbon dioxide in subpolar Martian regions. To additionally test this assumption, we compared the HEND neutron measurements onboard 2001 Mars Odyssey and the seasonal variations in the CO2-layer thickness as observed by the Mars Orbital Laser Altimeter (MOLA) onboard Mars Global Surveyor (MGS).  相似文献
