A study of the metallic lines in bright quiescent prominences indicates that the optical thickness in the K line of Ca ii may reach values as high as 103. This is about 10 times larger than the optical thickness in the H line and may explain some peculiarities of the H and K lines in solar prominences.  相似文献

The hydrogen and helium lines are the most prominent lines in the solar prominences spectra. Observations with the SUMER spectrometer onboard SOHO showed that there are weak lines in the blue wings of the Lyman series which affect their profiles. They were all identified as He ii lines in the Lyman series wings, except for the Lα line whose profile was affected by the use of an attenuator. The He ii lines are the even Balmer lines of the He ii system, a set of lines that we complete with the odd ones. We characterize them by comparison with the blue wings of the Lyman series in order to improve the H Lyman series observations and modeling, on one hand and to provide He ii lines observations for further combined H – He i – He ii modeling, on the other hand.  相似文献

The small phase-lag between velocities observed at different chromospheric levels is interpreted as being due to acoustic waves reflected by the very hot atmospheric layers of the chromosphere-corona transition zone. We consider first an isothermal slab, then a realistic solar atmospheric model and calculate weighting functions for velocities in Ca ii lines. It is shown that taking into account these functions and integrating over horizontal wave numbers leads to a good agreement with previous observations (Mein, 1977) in the case of 8498 and 8542 Ca ii lines. For the K line, the less good agreement shows that magnetoacoustic waves become important in the upper chromospheric layers.  相似文献

High spatial resolution spectral observations of five hedgerow prominences were made in H, He i D3 and Ca ii H and K.The observed relations between the lines were not the same in all prominences. The Ca ii H and K lines were 2–4 times brighter relative to H and D3 than predicted theoretically. The optical thickness of H was less than for the H and K lines, the H was optically thin in medium faint prominence structures. Arch-like features are often seen in spectrograms of very strong lines near the solar limb when the slit crosses the chromospheric network. An observed relation between line-of-sight velocities and the longitudinal component of the magnetic field in quiescent prominences is discussed. Weak fields in quiescent prominences are associated with large velocities determined from Doppler shifts of resolved emission knots and Doppler line widths measured in Ca ii K line. It is suggested that the observed irregular motions in prominences are driven by photospheric horizontal convection coupled by the prominence magnetic field. An energy flux of 3 × 105 ergs cm–2 sec–1 present in the form of Alfvén waves in quiescent prominences is consistent with the observations.  相似文献

Attention is drawn to a very simple instrumental arrangement for eclipse observations of the spectra of the chromosphere and prominences using a plane grating as polar heliostat and a short focus camera. A discussion is made of an infrared chromospheric spectrum showing traces of Thomson-scattered Ca ii absorption lines in the continuous spectrum. If the effect is real, it indicates a temperature of the order of 5000 K. A simple vector formula is presented describing various types of Doppler effects appearing in radiation scattered by moving particles.  相似文献

We present theoretical Ca ii K-line profiles and filtergram contrasts for several recent models of solar faculae. The line profiles vary greatly between models and between complete and partial frequency redistribution non-LTE calculations for any given model. The filtergram contrasts are relatively insensitive to the line formation theory which greatly simplifies the calculation for comparison with observations. The energy balance for cool quiescent prominences is examined using a 6000 km, 6000 K isothermal slab model prominence with a density gradient dictated by a modified Kippenhahn-Schlüter model. The model is irradiated from both sides by the coronal, chromospheric, and photospheric radiation fields. The radiative transfer problem is solved in detail for the Lyman continuum and H to determine the net radiative energy loss for hydrogen. An estimate of the energy loss for Ca ii H and K indicates that this source of energy loss is unimportant when compared with the hydrogen radiation. The radiative energy loss is easily balanced by the conductive energy gain from the corona.The only difficulty with our model is that the total hydrogen density must be of the order of 3 × 1012/ cm3 to match the n = 2 population density of 5 × 104/cm3 obtained from observation. To support a prominence of this density and a thickness of 6000 km against gravity requires magnetic fields of the order of 20 G which is much higher than the average magnetic field in quiescent prominences deduced from limb observations. We develop a relatively simple procedure for deriving models of upper photospheric regions based on the damping wings of the Ca ii resonance and infrared triplet lines. The procedure is used to derive a facular model but can also be applied to late-type stars. We compute a new grid of plage models to determine the difference in temperature versus mass column density structure T(m) between plage regions and the quiet solar chromosphere, and to test whether the solar chromosphere is geometrically thinner in plages. We compare partial redistribution calculations of Mg ii h and k and Ca ii K to NRL Skylab observations of Mg ii h and k in six active regions and Ca ii K intensities obtained from spectroheliograms taken at approximately the same time as the Mg ii observations. We find that the plage observations are better matched by models with linear (in log m) temperature distributions and larger values of m 0 (the mass column density at the 8000 K layer in the chromosphere), than by models with larger low chromosphere temperature gradients but values of m 0 similar to the quiet Sun. Our derived temperature structures are in agreement with the grid originally proposed by Shine and Linsky, but our analysis is in contrast to the study by Kelch which implies that stellar chromospheric geometrical thickness is not affected by chromospheric activity. We conclude that either the stellar Mg ii observations upon which the Kelch study was based are of poorer quality than had been assumed, or that the spatial averaging of inhomogeneous structures, which is inherent in the stellar data, does not lead to a best fit one-component model similar in detail to that of a stellar or a solar plage.Visiting Astronomer at Kitt Peak National Observatory, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.Staff member, Quantum Physics Division, National Bureau of Standards.  相似文献

Mean profiles of eighteen neutral iron lines of varying strengths were measured at selected positions from the center of the solar disk to the limb. These profiles were obtained by rapid photoelectric scanning of the spectrum with a double-pass spectrometer. The Fe i lines selected are representative of most of the stronger low-lying transitions in the neutral iron atom. In addition to the iron lines, this observational program includes center-to-limb measurements of three Ti ii lines and of the Ca i resonance line 4226.7. The line profiles are presented here in graphical form after correction for instrumental effects and normalization to the local disk center continuum.Both Kitt Peak National Observatory and the National Center for Atmospheric Research are sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

The shapes of the Ca ii H and K lines in sunspot umbral spectra vary from single asymmetric peaks near the centre of the disk to almost symmetric double peaks at the limb. In addition, there are other differences in the behaviour of both H and K lines in sunspots compared to the quiet Sun. The whole complex of the phenomena observed can not be explained by large scale chromosphere motions. Instead, a satisfactory model reproducing in detail peculiarities of the umbral emission reversals contains a cloud of emitting and absorbing gas located above the chromosphere, which flows into the sunspot. The radiation field parameters in such a cloud are consistent with the concept of weak quiescent prominences above the umbra.  相似文献

The rare-earth ions cerium ii, lanthanum ii, dysprosium ii, and additionally zirconium ii and iron ii, are seen as weak emission features in the wings of the solar Ca ii H and K lines. The strength of these emission lines increases on the disk toward the limb. We provide recent high-resolution observations at disk center and at the limb. The identity of the weak lines is re-worked. We point out the unique role of eclipse spectra in distinguishing between the photospheric and chromospheric origins of emission lines. It is then demonstrated from our full disk (Sun-as-a-Star) and center disk archives, 1974 – 2010, that no activity cycle related signal is evident (save for the H and K lines themselves).  相似文献

Measurements of the ionized Ca ii K line are one of the major resources for long-term studies of solar and stellar activity. They also play a critical role in many studies related to solar irradiance variability, particularly as a ground-based proxy to model the solar ultraviolet flux variation that may influence the Earth’s climate. Full disk images of the Sun in Ca ii K have been available from various observatories for more than 100 years and latter synoptic Sun-as-a-star observations in Ca ii K began in the early 1970s. One of these instruments, the Integrated Sunlight Spectrometer (ISS) has been in operation at Kitt Peak (Arizona) since late 2006. The ISS takes daily observations of solar spectra in nine spectra bands, including the Ca ii K and H lines. We describe recent improvements in data reduction of Ca ii K observations, and present time variations of nine parameters derived from the profile of this spectral line.  相似文献

On scans obtained with the Oxford photoelectric spectrometer, the [Ca ii] transition 4s 2S1/2-3d 2D3/2; is identified with a weak Fraunhofer line. It is argued that the strength of the line is consistent with the abundance of calcium which is derived from the permitted lines of Ca i and Ca ii.  相似文献

We obtained simultaneous spectra with a spatial resolution of 1/2 and a temporal resolution of 15 s in H, Ca ii-K, Caii 8542 Å, and three Fei lines of the sunspot group responsible for the large flares of August, 1972 (McMath No. 11976). A time series taken 1972, August 3 in the Fei 6173 Å Zeeman sensitive line was analyzed for oscillations of field strength and the angle between the field and the line of sight, and for changes of the field associated with the Ca ii-K umbral flashes discovered by Beckers and Tallant (1969). The power spectra show no significant peaks, conflicting with the results of Mogilevskii et al. (1972) who reported oscillations in the longitudinal component of the field strength with periods of 56, 90, and 150 s. Changes in the field were not observed to be correlated with the occurrence of umbral flashes. These results place restrictions on magnetic modes of energy transport between the photospheric layers and the chromospheric layers where the umbral flashes are observed.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Quiescent prominences It is found that Heii 4686 is emitted in the same cold region of 10000 K as hydrogen, metal and neutral helium emission lines. This conclusion is based on the finding that the observed width of 4686 is the same as the calculated width of 4686. The calculated width is derived from the observed widths of hydrogen and metallic lines. The large intensity of Heii 4686 in 10000 K can be explained by the ionization of Heii due to the UV radiation below 228 Å that comes from the corona and the transition region.Loop prominences The very broad width (30 to 50 km s–1) of 4686 for two post-flare loop prominences shows that the Heii line is emitted in hot regions different from regions of hydrogen and metal emission. From the widths of the Balmer lines and many metallic lines the kinetic temperature for one loop is found to be 16000 K in one part and 7600 K in another part. The electron densities are 1012.0 cm–3 and less than 1011.0 cm–3 respectively.Chromosphere The intensity of 4686 in the chromosphere can be interpreted in terms of a temperature of 10000 K with the ionization due to UV radiation. But, since observations of the width of 4686 are not available, a definitive conclusion for the chromosphere cannot be reached.  相似文献

Although the Ca ii K232 network is known to be cospatial with magnetic elements there has been doubt as to the magnetic origin of the fainter K2V points. A systematic study of the internal horizontal (line-of-sight) motions of quiescent prominences which were observed at the limb has been made by using fourier techniques to analyse the shift of the Ca ii K line as a function of height above the limb. The results indicate that a characteristic size for the velocity elements is present in 70% of the 13 prominences studied. This size of 4700 km is attributed to Alfvén waves induced by horizontal convective motions in the photosphere as previously suggested by Malville.
