A new chemical etching technique has been developed to study defect structures in terrestrial and lunar olivine crystals. Dislocations, low-angle dislocation boundaries, dislocation arrays and pile-ups have been observed on the (010, (100), and (001) faces of both polished and cleaved naturally deformed single crystal olivine, on various orientations of crystals in dunite, and in an experimentally deformed olivine crystal. Etching of Apollo 12 igneous rocks revealed dislocations and radiation damage tracks in lunar olivine. Dislocation etching of the (001) face of olivine is reported for the first time in this paper.  相似文献

Cleaved and mechanically polished surfaces of olivine from peridotite xenoliths from San Carlos, Arizona, were chemically etched using the techniques of Wegner and Christie (1974). Dislocation etch pits are produced on all surface orientations and they tend to be preferentially aligned along the traces of subgrain boundaries, which are approximately parallel to (100), (010), and (001). Shallow channels were also produced on (010) surfaces and represent dislocations near the surface that are etched out along their lengths. The dislocation etch channel loops are often concentric, and emanate from (100) subgrain boundaries, which suggests that dislocation sources are in the boundaries. Data on subgrain misorientation and dislocation line orientation and arguments based on subgrain boundary energy minimization are used to characterize the dislocation structures of the subgrain boundaries. (010) subgrain boundaries are of the twist type, composed of networks of [100] and [001] screw dislocations. Both (100) and (001) subgrain boundaries are tilt walls composed of arrays of edge dislocation with Burgers vectors b=[100] and [001], respectively. The inferred slip systems are {001} 〈100〉, {100} 〈001〉, and {010} 〈100〉 in order of diminishing importance. Exploratory transmission electron microscopy is in accord with these identifications. The flow stresses associated with the development of the subgrain structure are estimated from the densities of free dislocations and from the subgrain dimensions. Inferred stresses range from 35 to 75 bars using the free dislocation densities and 20 to 100 bars using the subgrain sizes.  相似文献

According to their genesis, meteorites are classified into heliocentric (which originate from the asteroid belt) and planetocentric (which are fragments of the satellites of giant planets, including the Proto-Earth). Heliocentric meteorites (chondrites and primitive meteorites genetically related to them) used in this study as a characteristic of initial phases of the origin of the terrestrial planets. Synthesis of information on planetocentric meteorites (achondrites and iron meteorites) provides the basis for a model for the genesis of the satellites of giant planets and the Moon. The origin and primary layering of the Earth was initially analogously to that of planets of the HH chondritic type, as follows from similarities between the Earth’s primary crust and mantle and the chondrules of Fe-richest chondrites. The development of the Earth’s mantle and crust precluded its explosive breakup during the transition from its protoplanetary to planetary evolutionary stage, whereas chondritic planets underwent explosive breakup into asteroids. Lunar silicate rocks are poorer in Fe than achondrites, and this is explained in the model for the genesis of the Moon by the separation of a small metallic core, which sometime (at 3–4 Ga) induced the planet’s magnetic field. Iron from this core was involved into the generation of lunar depressions (lunar maria) filled with Fe- and Ti-rich rocks. In contrast to the parent planets of achondrites, the Moon has a olivine mantle, and this fact predetermined the isotopically heavier oxygen isotopic composition of lunar rocks. This effect also predetermined the specifics of the Earth’s rocks, whose oxygen became systematically isotopically heavier from the Precambrian to Paleozoic and Mesozoic in the course of olivinization of the peridotite mantle, a processes that formed the so-called roots of continents.  相似文献

We present the analytical methods that have been developed for the first high-precision Fe isotope analyses that clearly identify naturally-occurring, mass-dependent isotope fractionation. A double-spike approach is used, which allows rigorous correction of instrumental mass fractionation. Based on 21 analyses of an ultra pure Fe standard, the external precision (1-SD) for measuring the isotopic composition of Fe is ±0.14 ‰/mass; for demonstrated reproducibility on samples, this precision exceeds by at least an order of magnitude that of previous attempts to empirically control instrumentally-produced mass fractionation (Dixon et al., 1993). Using the double-spike method, 15 terrestrial igneous rocks that range in composition from peridotite to rhyolite, 5 high-Ti lunar basalts, 5 Fe-Mn nodules, and a banded iron formation have been analyzed for their iron isotopic composition. The terrestrial and lunar igneous rocks have the same isotopic compositions as the ultra pure Fe standard, providing a reference Fe isotope composition for the Earth and Moon. In contrast, Fe-Mn nodules and a sample of a banded iron formation have iron isotope compositions that vary over a relatively wide range, from δ56Fe = +0.9 to −1.2 ‰; this range is 15 times the analytical errors of our technique. These natural isotopic fractionations are interpreted to reflect biological (“vital”) effects, and illustrate the great potential Fe isotope studies have for studying modern and ancient biological processes.  相似文献

Etching of alkali feldspar cleavage fragments with hydrofluoric acid vapor, followed by study of the surfaces by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), is a simple and rapid technique for characterizing the microtextures of crypto- and microperthites. This technique has a number of advantages over conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) including ease of sample preparation and the large areas of crystals which can be imaged. Alkali feldspars studied by the method can yield important information on the cooling history of igneous and metamorphic rocks, fluid-feldspar interactions and the morphology and microstructures of albite exsolution lamellae. Some of these applications are illustrated by examples of etched crypto- and micro-perthites from the Klokken layered syenite, south Greenland and the Shap granite, north-west England.  相似文献

我国月球探测一期工程获国家批准立项和“嫦娥一号”卫星成功发射及运行这一历史性事件标志着我国已继人造地球卫星、载人航天阶段之后,开始进入人类航天活动的第三领域——深空探测。无疑此时探讨人类这一伟大社会实践活动的自然科学意义,特别是深空探测对象的科学内涵具有重要的现实意义。随着相关技术的开发、创新和成熟,工作重点将逐渐转移到深空探测对象本身的科学研究上来,即认识地球之外的行星体以及更深刻地重新审视地球。本文讨论了现阶段深空探测对象——月球及类地行星的基本物质属性,回顾美国和前苏联两国探月计划实施历史的启示,Apollo计划的演变.科学内容的纳入及宇航员地学素养的要求,Apollo登月计划的实施对月球科学本身的促进,以及对20世纪地球科学发展、人才队伍建设和分析技术进步等的重大影响,总结了前苏联探月计划的成败及其教训,并对我国月球探测工程立项历史等方面进行了分析。在此基础上,论述了月球科学及类地行星研究的地球科学属性,并强调指出地球科学家应将月球及整个类地行星研究纳入到地球系统科学的框架之中。  相似文献

Mechanical albite and pericline twins were induced in seven feldspars, (Na, Ca) (Al, Si)4O8, in triaxial compression tests at 800° C, 8 to 10 kb confining pressure. Two were initially in a high temperature structural state (disordered) (An1, An59). Three (An32, An39, and An53) were slightly disordered, and two (An76 and An95) had the transitional and primitive anorthite structure, respectively. No microscopic twinning was detected in comparable tests on ordered albite and oligoclase (An1, An20), feldspars in the peristerite range (An11 An14) or in a low structural state labradorite (An51). Other deformational features include lamellae 60 to 80° from the c axis and (010) slip in the opposite sense for (010) twinning.Work performed under the auspices of the U. S. Lunar and terrestrial orthopyroxenes (Mg,Fe,Ca)2Si2O6 contain varying abundances of coherent, Ca-enriched Guinier-Preston (G.P.) zones. G.P. zones 5–6 unit cells thick have been found in one lunar sample whereas all other examples (lunar and terrestrial) are only one unit-cell-thick. Electron diffraction maxima from the larger lunar G.P. zones indicate that d 100=18.52 Å whereas, d 100=18.2 Å for the host. This increase in the a direction corresponds to an increase in calcium content in the G.P. zones over that of the host of ~25 mol% Ca2Si2O6. Diffraction patterns of the hk0 net from an area containing G.P. zones show extra spots (h=2n+1) not observed in the host orthopyroxene (Pbca), that violate the a-glide of the host. The G.P. zones, therefore, have space group Pbc21 if it is assumed that the c-glide of pyroxene is retained and the space group of the G.P. zone is a subgroup of Pbca. The loss of the a-glide in the G.P. zones results in 4 distinct silica chains and 4 distinct cation sites M1A, M1B, M2A, M2B; by symmetry, equivalent M2A or M2B sites are clustered together in only one-half of the unit cell. As one-fourth of the divalent cations in the G.P. zones are calcium, ordering of Ca on M2A or M2B would produce a zone 9 Å thick extended parallel to (100) with the composition of Ca(Mg,Fe)Si2O6, but constrained by the host to the structure of orthopyroxene. This zone and the Ca-poor half-unit-cell then constitute an 18 Å thick G.P. zone. Heating experiments of varying duration indicate that the zones become unstable with respect to the host orthopyroxene at ~950°C for Wo0.6 and ~1,050°C for Wo2.5. The zones are interpreted in terms of the pyroxene subsolidus as a metastable phase having either a solvus relationship with orthopyroxene or originating as a distinct phase. The size, distribution, composition and structure of G.P. zones may be an important indicator of the low-temperature thermal history of orthopyroxene.  相似文献

Plagioclase feldspars with mean compositions Ab91,3Or4,7An4,0 and Ab88,7An10,1Or1,2 have been studied by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The substructure consists of thin lamellae of albite and oligoclase. Two types of orientations of the lamellar planes were observed. The orientation of the more common type was found to change from (08 \(\bar 1\) ) to about ( \(\bar 1\) , 21, \(\bar 2\) ) as a function of the mean potassium content. The plane of the other type was found to be near ( \(\bar 7\) 12). Only the first type of lamellae produces visible Schiller colours.  相似文献

From the mathematical analysis of the rare-earth data on some of the Apollo 12 samples studied by Hubbard et al. (1971), the possible europium-normal primitive rare-earth pattern, in which europium is normal with respect to the adjacent rare-earth elements, has been estimated. A fact that the igneous rocks (Japanese geosynclinal basalts) appearing to reflect the analogous effect occur locally on the earth enhances our interests in the pattern resulting from the above estimation.  相似文献

Several plagioclase samples from core and rim of rhomb porphyry phenocrysts of the Oslo region were heated under dry conditions at 1050° C for 1, 10, 97, and 811 hours. X-ray powder photographs show that the structurally disordered to intermediate core and rim plagioclases crystallized under similar conditions. The terrestrial mantle has a well defined Sb depletion of ∼7 ± 1 (Jochum and Hofmann, 1997), and the lunar mantle is depleted relative to the Earth by a factor of ∼50 ± 5 (Wolf and Anders, 1980). Despite these well defined depletions, there are few data upon which to evaluate their origin—whether due to volatility or core formation. We have carried out a series of experiments to isolate several variables such as oxygen fugacity, temperature, pressure, and silicate and metallic melt compositions, on the magnitude of . The activity of Sb in FeNi metal is strongly composition dependent such that solubility of Sb as a function of fO2 must be corrected for the metal composition. When the correction is applied, Sb solubility is consistent with 3+ valence. Temperature series (at 1.5 GPa) shows that decreases by a factor of 100 over 400 °C, and a pressure series exhibits an additional decrease between ambient pressure (100 MPa) and 13 GPa. A strong dependence upon silicate melt composition is evident from a factor of 100 decrease in between nbo/t values of 0.3 and 1.7. Consideration of all these variables indicates that the small Sb depletion for the Earth’s mantle can be explained by high PT equilibrium partitioning between metal and silicate melt . The relatively large lunar Sb depletion can also be explained by segregation of a small metallic core, at lower pressure conditions where is much higher (2500).  相似文献

Exsolution and coarsening in Fe-free clinopyroxene of composition En45.1Di54.9 was studied at temperatures of 1300, 1200, and 1100°C, and annealing times between 10 min and 4320 h. Based on the wavelength of the exsolution lamellae, the exsolution process can be divided into exsolution sensu stricto and coarsening. During exsolution sensu stricto, the average wavelength of the “001” and “100” lamellae remains constant in contrast to the subsequent coarsening process. A progressive development of the microstructure is observed before coarsening which includes formation of island-like regions of dark contrast without phase separation, occurrence of pigeonite and diopside domains predominantly elongated along (100), formation of “100” exsolution lamellae, dissolution of the “100” lamellae, and predominant occurrence of “001” exsolution lamellae. All observations are in accordance with the exsolution mechanism of spinodal decomposition. After termination of the exsolution process, coarsening of the exsolution lamellae is observed. Extension of remote sensing of planetary bodies to the ultraviolet is now feasiable up to 2000 Å from earth-orbiting telescopes and spacecraft. The benefits of this extension is analysed on the basis of laboratory spectra taken on a large variety of terrestrial, lunar and meteoritic samples. Knowledge of the albedo for two wavelengths at 2300 and 6500 Å permits classification of a surface into one of the following types: lunar, carbonaceous chondrites, ordinary chondrites, achondrites or acidic rocks, basaltic rocks, irons. For lunar-type surfaces, a simple albedo measurement at 6500 Å can be converted into quantitative abundance determinations of silicate, aluminium oxide and iron; a large amount of telescopic lunar photometry data is available for mapping these abundances. Extension of the photometry to 2300 Å permits quantitative measurement of TiO2 abundances. For asteroids and non-icy satellites, rock-type classification and constraints in chemical abundances of Si, Al, Fe and Ti can be derived from photometry at 2300 and 6500 Å. The IUE telescope already orbiting the earth, the Space Telescope to come, the lunar polar orbiter and other spacecraft under prospect are potentially available to provide the photometric observations at 6500 and 2300 Å required.  相似文献

In the second phase of the Chang’E Program an unmanned lunar rover will be launched onto the Moon. When ground scientists get a full understanding of the chemical composition of lunar soil around the rover, they can make more detailed survey plans for the rover and various payloads onboard so as to satisfy their scientific objectives. There is an obvious relationship between the reflectance of lunar soil and its chemical characteristics. Both principal component analysis (PCA) and support vector machine (SVM) models were applied to establishing the relationship between the reflectance spectra and chemical compositions of lunar highland and mare soil samples sent back by Apollo missions 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17 and measured by Lunar Soil Characterization Consortium (LSCC). PCA was used to reduce and select the features of the reflectance spectra of lunar soil samples. Then, these features were put into SVM to estimate the abundances of various chemical components in lunar soil. We also compared the results of our measurement with those obtained by the SVM model [partial least squares (PLS)] and the principal component regression (PCR) model reported in literature. Our studies showed that with the exception of TiO2, the results of prediction of the abundances of chemical compounds in lunar soil by our model are much more reliable than those reported in literature. The reflectance spectra of lunar soil are closely related to the materials from which it was derived.  相似文献

矿物出溶结构保存有早期母体矿物的物理化学条件信息,对其开展研究不仅有助于了解寄主岩石的来源深度,而且有助于研究减压折返的动力学演化过程.在世界许多高压-超高压带的榴辉岩和石榴辉石岩中,人们普遍发现单斜辉石中有定向排列的针状或棒状SiO2析出物,其矿物相主要为α石英,有时会伴生钙质角闪石等含水矿物.这些定向针状或棒状体通常平行于单斜辉石c[001]轴方向延伸,石英长轴可以为其c[0001]轴或a[1120]轴.电子背散射衍射(EBSD)测试结果表明,多数石英(96%)析出物与寄主单斜辉石具有结晶学取向关系:(1) 50%的石英c轴平行,并且[0001]Qz//[001]Cpx;(2)35%的石英至少有一个a轴平行,并且[1120]Qz//[001]Cpx;(3)11%的石英至少有一个s{1121}面平行,并且(1121)Qz//(100)Cpx.钙质角闪石析出物与寄主单斜辉石也具有密切结晶学取向关系:(100)Amp//(100)Cpx、[010]Amp//[010]Cpx、[001]Amp//[001]Cpx、[100]Amp∧[100]Cpx≈32°.上述定量显微构造证据表明,单斜辉石中定向石英析出物是由出溶作用所形成,并且多数石英出溶体形成于α石英稳定域.已有高温高压实验研究数据表明,单斜辉石中空位的形成和钙埃斯科拉组分(CaEs)的含量均受化学组成、压力、温度等多种因素综合影响:单斜辉石中CaEs含量对化学组成非常敏感,并受到共生矿物体系中自由SiO2相和蓝晶石的共同缓冲;相同化学组成和等压条件下,CaEs含量总体上随温度升高缓慢降低;相同化学组成和等温条件下,CaEs含量在<6 GPa区间随压力升高而增加,在>6 GPa区间随压力升高而降低.单斜辉石定向SiO2析出物的形成可能涉及多种因素,高压只是其中必要条件之一.榴辉岩质单斜辉石中“石英±角闪石”析出物很可能形成于开放体系,与熔流体活动密切相关,涉及多阶段物质扩散、晶体成核生长、重结晶、退变质反应等复杂作用过程.单斜辉石中定向SiO2析出物的显微结构特征并非超高压岩石的必要条件,这种特殊显微结构也不能作为证明超高压的充分条件.   相似文献

Petrographic investigations and electron microprobe analyses have been performed on a rare aggregate of clinopyroxene megacrysts collected from Cenozoic basalts in Yinfengling, Leizhou Peninsula of South China. The aggregate, composed of several clinopyroxene megacrysts, shows abundant exsolution lamellae of garnet (Grt) and orthopyroxene (Opx), and granular texture. Cr- and Ti-poor spinels are also present in this sample. They occur predominantly as Sp–Opx–Grt clusters (Cr# = 0.025–0.034) at the interspace between different megacrysts, and subordinately as bleb-shaped (Cr# = 0.025–0.034) or thin-lamella crystals (Cr# = 0.006–0.021) in clinopyroxene. Three different assemblages of exsolution are identified, namely (1) Sp (high Cr/Al) and Opx; (2) Grt–Opx; (3) Sp (low Cr/Al) and Opx. In addition, some garnets were likely developed as response to breakdown of the high-Cr/Al Sp. The homogeneous compositions in all constituent minerals and the good agreement between calculated Cpx/Grt partition coefficients (K d’s) for trace elements and reference data strongly suggest a chemical equilibrium among coexisting minerals, probably attained by diffusion after the exsolution. Thermobarometric calculation based on exsolved assemblage yields a temperature of 900 ± 30°C and a pressure of 12 ± 2.2 kbar, corresponding to the present-day thermal gradient in the region. Much higher P–T estimates (T = 1,210 ± 30°C, P = 16.2 ± 3.5 kbar) are obtained for the reconstructed composition of cpx prior to exsolution. The contrast in thermal state before and after the exsolution might reflect the thermal evolution of the lithosphere beneath South China during the Cenozoic. Landau theory of the \(P\bar 1 - I\bar 1\) phase transition in Ca-rich plagioclases reveals the sensitivity of the phase transition behaviour to a) Al, Si disorder, b) structural replacement of Ca by Na, and c) inhomogeneities of lattice strains. The following effects are predicted:
  1. A tricritical phase transition exists in fully ordered anorthite. Al, Si disorder and Na, Ca exchange lead to second order phase transitions.
  2. The transition temperatures depend sensitively on the degree of Al, Si disorder and the chemical composition of the Ca-rich plagioclases. Increasing Na-content decreases the transition temperatures.
  3. The thermal evolution of c and d reflections depends on the homogeneity of the crystal and do not necessarily reflect the temperature evolution of the macroscopic lattice strain. A simple quadratic dependence of the X-ray scattering intensity on the order parameter exists only for fully ordered, homogeneous anorthite.
The role of inhomogeneous Al, Si distributions and lattice relaxations are discussed including possible structural modulations.  相似文献

Water samples were collected in the main channel of the Geum River, South Korea, and measured dissolved elemental concentrations and isotopic compositions of nitrate in order to identify the factors controlling water chemistry. Elemental concentrations significantly increased location-wise after the confluence from urban areas, indicating the changes in solute sources from chemical weathering to anthropogenic inputs such as manure, fertilizers, and sewage. In particular, the effect of sewage input is manifested in the concentrations of Cl?, SO4 2?, and Na+, while the NO3 ? concentration is influenced mainly by soil inputs with minor contributions from manure and fertilizer because both δ15N–NO3 and δ18O–NO3 indicate NO3 ? mostly consists of soil-derived nitrates in the upper reaches but manure/sewage nitrates in the lower reaches. The relative proportion of three factors, Cl?, Ca2++Mg2+, and NO3 ?, indicates that water chemistry in the upstream is controlled by the soil weathering but that in the downstream by the sewage. Seasonally, water chemistry during summer is dominated by the soil weathering due to the flushing effect but that during winter by the sewage. This study suggests that the relative proportion of three factors can be used for tracing natural and anthropogenic sources in water chemistry.  相似文献
