The stress field developed in the Brazilian disc is determined assuming that the disc is under the influence of a combination of two load distributions, namely normal (radial)- and shear (frictional)-stresses, both of them acting along two finite symmetric arcs of the disc periphery. The nature of the two distributions as well as the extent of the loaded arcs are obtained from the solution of the respective contact problem according to which the disc and the jaw are considered as a system of two elastic plane bodies in contact pressed against each other. Emphasis is given to the stresses due to friction since the stress field due to the specific distribution of radial pressure is already known. It is concluded that the role of friction cannot be ignored, especially in the immediate vicinity of the contact rim. Moreover, for high surface roughness the overall transverse normal stress component in this region becomes of tensile nature indicating increased possibility of premature local cracking (taking into account the low tensile strength of the materials tested using the Brazilian disc test). On the other hand, the stress field at the disc’s center is totally insensitive to both the exact distribution of radial pressure and also to the presence or absence of friction. It is thus indicated that in case fracture in the immediate vicinity of the contact rim is by some means suppressed (reducing for example drastically the coefficient of friction) the results of the Brazilian disc test correspond, in a satisfactory manner, to those predicted by Hondros’ classic approach. 相似文献

To study the location of crack initiation and its failure mode in the Brazilian test, the analytical location of the crack initiation under different failure modes was first discussed with the stress formulas of the Brazilian test. Then, by using the numerical simulation technique of fast Lagrangian analysis of continua to simulate the ideal Brazilian test, we found that: (a) when the crack was a tensile fracture, the crack initiation point was found to be around the maximum tension stress point; (b) when the crack was a shear failure, the crack initiation point, which was only related to the internal friction angle, was found between the maximum tension stress point and the tensile critical point; and c. the numerical conclusion well verified the correctness of the theoretical analysis and was in good agreement with the results of other papers. 相似文献

Rock mechanics and geomechanical studies can provide crucial information for economic geothermal reservoir development. Although significant progress has been made in reservoir geomechanics, technical challenges specific to the geothermal area (high temps, data collection, experimentation issues) have prevented widespread use of geomechanics in geothermal reservoir development. However, as the geothermal industry moves to develop more challenging resources using the concept of enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), and to maximize productivity from conventional resources, the need for improved understanding of geomechanical issues and developing specific technologies for geothermal reservoirs has become critical. Rock mechanics research and improved technologies can impact areas related to in-situ stress characterization, initiation and propagation of artificial and natural fractures, and the effects of coupled hydro-thermo-chemo-mechanical processes on fracture permeability and induced seismicity. Rock mechanics/geomechanics research, including experimental and theoretical investigations as well as numerical and analytical solutions, has an important role in optimizing reservoir design and heat extraction strategies for sustainable geothermal energy development. A number of major areas where rock mechanics research can facilitate geothermal systems development are reviewed in this paper with particular emphasis on EGS design and management. 相似文献
