We present new magnetic field measurements of the K2 main‐sequence star ϵ Eri based on principal components analysis (PCA) line‐profile reconstructions. The aim of this paper is to quantify the surface‐averaged magnetic field and search for possible variations. A total of 338 optical échelle spectra from our robotic telescope facility STELLA with a spectral resolution of 55 000 were available for analysis. This time‐series was used to search for the small line‐profile variations due to a surface magnetic field with the help of a PCA. Evidence for a spatial and temporal inhomogeneous magnetic field distribution is presented. The mean, surface averaged, magnetic field strength was found tobe 〈B〉 = 186 ± 47 G in good agreement with previous Zeeman‐broadening measurements. Clear short‐term variations of the surface averaged magnetic field of up to few tens Gauss were detected together with evidence for a three‐year cycle in the surface‐averaged magnetic field of ϵ Eri. Spectropolarimetric time series of two sunspots are investigated to search for magnetic field oscillations. While the existence of velocity oscillations in the five-minute band is clearly confirmed, periodic variations of the magnetic field strength or the magnetic angles inclination and azimuth are small and restricted to very narrow areas. They occur in single frequency bins, but different for magnetic field strength and angles. Small dark structures embedded in one penumbra or in the near surroundings of the other spot exhibit enhanced power for the magnetic variations at all frequencies. Phase differences are rather unsure. The obtained values are in agreement with intrinsic magnetic field variations produced by slow magnetoacoustic modes as well as with an opacity mechanism connected with fast modes.  相似文献

The magnetic field strength in sunspots was derived from time series of two-dimensional spectra taken with the Göttingen 2D-spectrometer at the Vacuum Tower Telescope on Tenerife in August 1997. For the present measurements the magnetically sensitive line Fe?i 684.3 nm was selected. The main spot of the investigated sunspot group has a maximum magnetic field strength of 2270 G. Enhanced power of the magnetic field variations was found at the boundary between umbra and penumbra for all frequency ranges. These fluctuations are not well correlated with those of intensity variations or line shifts. Other spatial power peaks occur in a dark patch inside the centreside penumbra and at the centres of some accompanying small spots. Since no clear peaks at certain frequencies are found, the variations are not harmonic oscillations. A possible relation to Hα flares is investigated. There are several cases of published observations of magnetic field variations where flares occurred soon after the measurements, but very little before. Therefore it is not very probable that flares act as exciters of magnetic field variations.

We analysed the combined Greenwich (1874–1976) and Solar Optical Observatories Network (1977–2011) data on sunspot groups. The daily rate of change of the area of a spot group is computed using the differences between the epochs of the spot group observation on any two consecutive days during its life-time and between the corrected whole spot areas of the spot group at these epochs. Positive/negative value of the daily rate of change of the area of a spot group represents the growth/decay rate of the spot group. We found that the total amounts of growth and decay of spot groups whose life times ≥2 days in a given time interval (say one-year) well correlate to the amount of activity in the same interval. We have also found that there exists a reasonably good correlation and an approximate linear relationship between the logarithmic values of the decay rate and area of the spot group at the first day of the corresponding consecutive days, largely suggesting that a large/small area (magnetic flux) decreases in a faster/slower rate. There exists a long-term variation (about 90-year) in the slope of the linear relationship. The solar cycle variation in the decay of spot groups may have a strong relationship with the corresponding variations in solar energetic phenomena such as solar flare activity. The decay of spot groups may also substantially contribute to the coherence relationship between the total solar irradiance and the solar activity variations.  相似文献

Results of UBV photometry and polarimetry of 1580 Betulia during its 1976 apparition are presented. The synodic period of rotation is found to be 6.130 hr. The linear phase coefficient and absolute magnitude of the primary maximum in V are 0.032 mag/deg and 14.88, respectively. No color variations with rotation or solar phase angle detected, the mean colors being B?V = 0.66 and U?B = 0.24. Betulia's lightcurve is unique among asteroids studied to date in that it displays three maxima and three minima within one rotational cycle, indicative of a region of greater roughness and/or a dark spot on one of its broad faces. Polarization results indicate a low albedo and a mean diameter of about 7 km, establishing Betulia as the first C type asteroid to be found among the Mars crossers. A model accounting for most features of Betulia's lightcurve is given by a prolate spheroid rotating about one of its shorter axes having an axis ratio of 1:1.21 with a major topographic feature on one of its broad faces.  相似文献

A quasi-static magnetic field similar to that of a large single sunspot is assumed to be embedded in a photospheric model of an Ao star. The differences of the model atmosphere within the magnetic spot relative to the photosphere are calculated by means of the equations of hydromagnetics. The differences are small for τ ≧ I but increase towards smaller τ. The spot model is more transparent in its high layers. In equal geometrical depth the thermodynamic parameters are reduced by the magnetic field. While a small spot is darker than its photospheric surroundings, a large spot appears brighter; the wavelength dependence of its excess in brightness coincides with observations. Compared with the photosphere, the Balmer lines show narrower and deeper cores in the large spot, these differences increase towards larger quantum numbers. Also these features are qualitatively confirmed by observations. An outline is given how to extend and generalize the present model calculations.  相似文献

This paper describes our studies of evolution of the solar magnetic field with different sign and field strength in the range from –100 G to 100 G. The structure and evolution of large‐scale magnetic fields on the Sun during the last 3 cycles of solar activity is investigated using magnetograph data from the Kitt Peak Solar Observatory. This analysis reveals two groups of the large‐scale magnetic fields evolving differently during the cycles. The first group is represented by relatively weak background fields, and is best observed in the range of 3–10 Gauss. The second group is represented by stronger fields of 75–100 Gauss. The spatial and temporal properties of these groups are described and compared with the total magnetic flux. It is shown that the anomalous behaviour of the total flux during the last cycle can be found only in the second group. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We present spot models for nine years of continuous VIc photometry of UZ Lib from 1993–2001. The relatively stable double‐humped light curve shape suggests extreme phase coherence. From the spot‐modelling analysis, we found that the major spots or spot groups are always located on the hemisphere facing the secondary star and exactly in the opposite hemisphere anti‐facing the secondary. Several single‐humped light curves and our suggested binary scenario rule out a pure ellipsoidal variability as the cause of the double‐humped light curve shape. We try to explain this preferred spot pattern with a magnetic‐field structure that connects the two components, as suggested earlier for RS CVn stars in general. A possible 4.8 years spot cycle is found from the long‐term brightness variations but needs confirmation. We rediscuss the basic astrophysical data of UZ Lib. The Hipparcos parallax is likely wrong, a possible reason could be that UZ Lib is e.g., a triple system.  相似文献

Further investigations of the Ap star γ Equ (SCHOLZ , 1975) showed that a very slow variation of the longitudinal magnetic field exists, with a change of sign in the years 1970/1971. In three spectrograms obtained near of the crossover points of the longitudinal magnetic field hints are given at the presence of a transversal magnetic field of about 3500 Gauß. The radial velocity measurements show no definitive variations.  相似文献

In view of the recently discovered time variations in rotation velocity within the solar differentially rotating tachocline (Howe et al. 2000), we study conditions for the equilibrium and excitation of motions in nonrigidly rotating magnetized layers of the radiative zones located near the boundaries of the convection zone. The emphasis is on the possible relationship between quasi-periodic tachocline pulsations and the generation of a nonaxisymmetric magnetic field in the convection zone. This field generation is studied under the assumption that it results from a reduction in the expenditure of energy on convective heat transport. The (antisymmetric about the equator) field is shown to increase in strength if there are both a radial gradient in angular velocity and steady-state axisymmetric meridional circulation of matter. The sense of circulation is assumed to change (causing the sign of the generated field to change) after the maximum permissible field strength is reached. This is apparently attributable to the excitation of the corresponding turbulent viscosity of the medium. It is also important that the cyclic field variations under discussion are accompanied by variations in solar-type dipole magnetic field.  相似文献

In order to search for oscillations in velocity and magnetic field strength within a sunspot umbra, a time series of spectra has been obtained through a circular analyzer and the Gregory-Coudé telescope at the Observatorio del Teide, Tenerife. The velocity oscillations clearly show peaks of power at periods between 2 and 7 minutes, with a maximum at 5 minutes. The apparent variations of the magnetic field strength, however, don't exhibit significant oscillations; these fluctuations are rather produced by the influence of parasitic stray light from the surrouding quiet sun which are also visible in the measured time variations of the umbral contrast of continuum intensity.  相似文献

The determination of the radial velocity and the effective magnetic field strength for the peculiar A-type stars 53 Cam and γ Equ lad to the following results 53 Cam: The radial velocity shows a dependence on the excitation, resp. ionization potential in the way that evidently lines with higher excitation potential have higher radial velocity. We cannot explain this result with the rotator model without an essential modification of that. The amount and the time variation of the effective magnetic field agrees only approximately with that determined by BABCOCK. A secular variation may be indicated, but needs further confirmation. The effective magnetic field strength determined from the SiII-line λ = 4130.884 Å shows an essential smaller value than that by the other lines. The investigation of γ Equ yielded the following results: The best way to represent both the radial velocity and the effective magnetic field strength is a period of 1786 days given by STEINITZ and PYPER. We did not find a difference of the radial velocities derived from different lines and no line intensity variations. However, there seems to be observational evidence that short and obvious accidental variations of the radial velocity and effective magnetic field exist.  相似文献

The first aim of the present work is to compute a more accurate and recent model for the Earth’s magnetic field. The second aim is to determine the effects of the Earth’s magnetic field on the motion of a charged artificial satellite to evaluate the variations of the orbital elements of the satellite due to these effects. The magnetic field and its variation with time have been studied at different heights, longitudes and latitudes. The geomagnetic field is considered as a multiple potential field and the electrical charge of the satellite is assumed to be constant. A new computer code has been constructed to follow the components of the magnetic field in spherical harmonic models. The Gauss equations are solved numerically. The results concentrate on the computation of the numerical values of orbital perturbation for the case of a low Earth satellite. RS-1 satellite and space craft gravity probe B (GPB) are chosen as cases of studies for a detailed numerical analysis.  相似文献

Several one and two dimensional mean field models are analyzed where the effects of current helicity fluxes and boundaries are included within the framework of the dynamical quenching model. In contrast to the case with periodic boundary conditions, the final saturation energy of the mean field decreases inversely proportional to the magnetic Reynolds number. If a nondimensional scaling factor in the current helicity flux exceeds a certain critical value, the dynamo can operate even without kinetic helicity, i.e. it is based only on shear and current helicity fluxes, as first suggested by Vishniac & Cho (2001, ApJ 550, 752). Only above this threshold is the current helicity flux also able to alleviate catastrophic quenching. The fact that certain turbulence simulations have now shown apparently non‐resistively limited mean field saturation amplitudes may be suggestive of the current helicity flux having exceeded this critical value. Even below this critical value the field still reaches appreciable strength at the end of the kinematic phase, which is in qualitative agreement with dynamos in periodic domains. However, for large magnetic Reynolds numbers the field undergoes subsequent variations on a resistive time scale when, for long periods, the field can be extremely weak. Simultaneous observations of relative umbral intensities in four wavelength regions are presented. In the visual wavelength region the umbral intensities show lower values than given by most authors. By observing the same spot during different seeing conditions the method of correction for stray light is found to be consistent within the accuracy of the method. In addition, a new simple correction method is suggested.  相似文献

Numerical solutions of a heat conduction problem in an anisotropic medium are used for a discussion of the possibility to explain the temperature distribution in sunspots and their environment. The anisotropy is assumed being due to the strong magnetic field in sunspots and the region below. This magnetic field forces the convection to take an anisotropic structure (two-dimensional turbulence) and thus the region gets anisotropic conduction properties, on the average. The discussion shows that the observed temperature profiles can be explained in case the depth of the region of anisotropy is about as large as the diameter of the spot or larger.  相似文献

The maximum magnetic field strength generated by Weibel-type plasma instabilities is estimated for typical conditions in the interstellar medium. The relevant kinetic dispersion relations are evaluated by conducting a parameter study both for Maxwellian and for suprathermal particle distributions showing that micro Gauss magnetic fields can be generated. It is shown that, depending on the streaming velocity and the plasma temperatures, either the longitudinal or a transverse instability will be dominant. In the presence of an ambient magnetic field, the filamentation instability is typically suppressed while the two-stream and the classic Weibel instability are retained.  相似文献

The solar wind plasma exhibits many features of the solar surface passed on to the interplanetary medium as temporal variations due to the solar rotation. The yearly average values of solar wind velocity, and geomagnetic index A p during 1965–1999 were found to exhibit long period evolution. They were found to peak around the declining phase of each solar cycle. While the solar wind velocity peaks around the second half of the declining phase, the IMF field strength increases around the first half of the declining phase of each solar cycle. The power spectrum of these parameters shows peaks around 37-day, 30-day, 27-day, 13.5-day, 9-day, and 7-day periods. The temporal evolution of the power spectrum of the solar wind plasma parameters and the geomagnetic activity index A p are also studied in detail and presented with the help of contour graphs. These studies indicate that the strength of the quasi-periodicities in the interplanetary medium evolves with time.  相似文献

From an analysis of the distribution of sunspot groups with respect to their maximum areas we find that this distribution consists of two distinct components. One component contributes to spot groups of all possible values of A* with a distribution density varying as ∼ exp (b1 á * 1/2 ) with b1 nearly constant from cycleto cycle and having a mean value ∼10-4 km-1. The other component is predominantly responsible for spot groups withA* ≲, 30 *10-6 hemisphere but may provide a few spot groups even above 50 * l0-6 hemisphere. This component may follow a distribution density ∼ exp (-b2 A*). We also determine the widths of the latitude zones over which spot groups in various intervals of A* appear and study their variation with time. These widths and their variations indicate that the two statistical samples of spot groups may be produced by two families of flux-tube clusters as suggested earlier in a phenomenological model. Very thin flux-tube clusters in the statistical samples seem to be related to the ephemeral active regions and X-ray bright points.  相似文献

We propose a mechanism whereby the solar wind flowing past the magnetosphere of Uranus causes a Faraday disc dynamo topology to be established and power to be extracted from the kinetic energy of rotation of Uranus. An immediate consequence of this dynamo is the generation of Birkeland currents that flow in and out of the sunlit polar cap with the accompanying production of polar aurora. We calculate the power extracted from planetary rotation as a function of planetary dipole magnetic moment and the ionospheric conductivity of Uranus. For plausible values of ionospheric conductivity, the observed auroral power requires a magnetic moment corresponding to a surface equatorial field of the order of 4 Gauss, slightly larger than the value 1.8 Gauss given by the empirical “magnetic Bodes law”.  相似文献
