The Portland metropolitan area historically is the most seismically active region in Oregon. At least three potentially active faults are located in the immediate vicinity of downtown Portland, with the Portland Hills Fault (PHF) extending directly beneath downtown Portland. The faults are poorly understood, and the surface geologic record does not provide the information required to assess the seismic hazards associated with them. The limited geologic information stems from a surface topography that has not maintained a cumulative geologic record of faulting, in part, due to rapid erosion and deposition from late Pleistocene catastrophic flood events and a possible strike-slip component of the faults. We integrated multiple high-resolution geophysical techniques, including seismic reflection, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and magnetic methods, with regional geological and geophysical surveys to determine that the Portland Hills Fault is presently active with a zone of deformation that extends at least 400 m. The style of deformation is consistent with at least two major earthquakes in the last 12–15 ka, as confirmed by a sidehill excavation trench. High-resolution geophysical methods provide detailed images of the upper 100 m across the active fault zone. The geophysical images are critical to characterizing the structural style within the zone of deformation, and when integrated with a paleoseismic trench, can accurately record the seismic history of a region with little surface geologic exposure.  相似文献

Mt. St. Hilaire occurs as a small funnel-shaped intrusion in the Monteregian petrographic province of Quebec and consists of alkali gabbros and later nepheline syenites. Based on field relations, petrography, and geochemistry, five types of gabbro are recognized. In order of intrusion these are: leucogabbro, foliated gabbro, kaersutite-biotite gabbro, kaersutite gabbro, and a gabbro-melagabbro series. Based on analyses of the early-forming ilmenite-titanomagnetite, the gabbros crystallized under high fO2 conditions which lead to subsequent crystallization of olivines with high MnO contents. Fractionation of ilmenite and titanomagnetite was a major control on the Ti and A[TV]concentrations in the clinopyroxenes. Plagioclase compositions in the gabbros became richer in Ab contents in the sequence gabbro-melagabbro to leucogabbro. Whole-rock analyses suggest that the parental magma of alkali basaltic composition was fairly evolved prior to emplacement. Lack of olivine in the cumulate gabbro-melagabbros and low Ni and Cr in all gabbros may reflect either extreme olivine fractionation and/or a very low olivine content in the source material for these basalts. Differentiation of the gabbros occurred both pre- and post-emplacement, probably by a process of crystal-liquid fractionation at depths between 3-5 and 8 km. This is in accordance with geophysical measurements for other Monteregian intrusions. A model is presented for the mechanism of emplacement.  相似文献

The 1995–1999 eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano,Montserrat, has produced a crystal-rich andesite containingquench-textured mafic inclusions, which show evidence of havingbeen molten when incorporated into the host magma. Individualcrystals in the andesite record diverse histories. Amphibolephenocrysts vary from pristine and unaltered to strongly oxidizedand pseudomorphed by anhydrous reaction products. Plagioclasephenocrysts are commonly reverse zoned, often with dusty sievetextures. Reverse zoned rims are also common on orthopyroxenephenocrysts. Pyroxene geothermometry gives an average temperatureof 858 ± 20°C for orthopyroxene phenocryst cores,whereas reverse zoned rims record temperatures from about 880to 1050°C. The heterogeneity in mineral rim compositions,zoning patterns and textures is interpreted as reflecting non-uniformreheating and remobilization of the resident magma body by intrusionof hotter mafic magma. Convective remobilization results inmixing together of phenocrysts that have experienced differentthermal histories, depending on proximity to the intruding maficmagma. The low temperature and high crystallinity are interpretedas reflecting the presence of a cool, highly crystalline magmabody beneath the Soufriere Hills volcano. The petrological observations,in combination with data on seismicity, extrusion rate and SO2fluxes, indicate that the current eruption was triggered byrecent influx of hot mafic magma. This is responsible for the subsequent evolution of the North African passive margin during the Late Cretaceous, and the creation of the fold–thrust belt and associated foreland deformations. This thinned crust was an area of mantle upwelling that favoured the increase of isotherms, the uprise of basalt magma, and the circulation of hydrothermal fluids. The Cretaceous magmatism generated a major hydrothermal event characterised by the circulation of hot fluids along faults and a relatively high heat flow in the basin. Temperature elevation and hydrothermal conditions led to alteration of basalts and generated a new mineral equilibrium around the enclosing sedimentary deposits.  相似文献

The tuffs and lava of the Igwisi Hills are the youngest magmatic rocks on the Tanzania Craton. They consist of small xenoliths of phlogopite-calcite-garnet lherzolite in an olivine-calcite-dolomite-apatite-perovskite-spinel-serpentine matrix. Their mineralogy, major element chemistry and isotope chemistry indicate strong affinities with kimberlite, particularly the calcite-rich kimberlites of the Benfontein Sills, South Africa. As such, the Igwisi Hills are the youngest example of kimberlite magmatism. The magma formed by small degrees of melting of a carbonate-apatite-bearing peridotite source at depths in excess of 110 km.  相似文献

We investigated chemical and isotopic compositions of clinopyroxene crystals from well age-constrained juvenile scoria clasts, lava flows, and hypoabyssal magmatic ejecta representative of the whole eruptive history of the Alban Hills Volcanic District. The Alban Hills is a Quaternary ultra-potassic district that was emplaced into thick limestone units along the Tyrrhenian margin of Italy. Alban Hills volcanic products, even the most differentiated, are characterised by low SiO2 content. We suggest that the low silica activity in evolving magmas can be ultimately due to a decarbonation process occurring at the magma/limestone interface. According to the liquid line of descent we propose, the differentiation process is driven by crystallisation of clinopyroxene + leucite ± apatite ± magnetite coupled with assimilation of a small amount of calcite and/or with interaction with crustal CO2. By combining age, chemical data, strontium and oxygen isotopic compositions, and REE content of clinopyroxene, we give insights into the evolution of primitive ultrapotassic magmas of the Alban Hills Volcanic District over an elapsed period of about 600 kyr. Geochemical features of clinopyroxene crystals, consistent with data coming from other Italian ultrapotassic magmas, indicate that Alban Hills primary magmas were generated from a metasomatized lithospheric mantle source. In addition, our study shows that the 87Sr / 86Sr and LREE/HREE of Alban Hills magmas continuously diminished during the 600–35 ka time interval of the Alban Hills eruptive history, possibly reflecting the progressive depletion of the metasomatized mantle source of magmas.  相似文献

长白山火山区地壳热结构尚未建立,目前基于地球物理探测手段获得的天池火山浅部岩浆房赋存深度存在差异.通过对天池火山北坡CZK07钻孔测温情况的研究,在资料评价与地温梯度计算的基础上,结合全新世岩浆房温度资料,估算了北坡浅部岩浆房的赋存深度.CZK07钻孔位于地球物理探测所推测的浅部岩浆房正上方,靠近历史时期火山喷发火口,在孔深约610 m处地温较高且稳定(102.5~106.8℃).连续测温资料显示,钻孔地温随深度呈一次正相关变化,地温梯度主要变化于134~178℃/km之间(平均为153℃/km),可大致代表浅部岩浆房上覆地壳的地温梯度.基于前人浅部岩浆房的温度研究,本次定量估算的天池火山北坡浅部岩浆房的赋存深度,为天池水面下5.25~7.21 km,与地球物理探测的反演结果相近.  相似文献

The Monteregian Hills consist of a series of alkaline intrusionsand associated dikes and sills emplaced along a linear west-easttrend extending from 35 km west of Montreal, Quebec, to 190km east of Montreal. The igneous activity occurred between 117Ma and 141 Ma and the age data show a distinct bimodality, withstrongly undersaturated magmas emplaced at c. 118 Ma and slightlyundersaturated magmas emplaced at c. 136 Ma. The eastern intrusionslargely consist of gabbros, diorites, and a variety of felsicrocks as compared to the more mafic character of the westernintrusions which largely consist of pyroxenites, gabbros, anddiorites. The eastern intrusions were emplaced through a thicksequence of folded and faulted geosynclinal sediments whichseems to have played a role in determining their felsic character. Mounts Brome and Shefford are located approximately 80 km eastof Montreal. The dominant rock type at Mount Shefford is a dioritewhich has been intruded by arcuate bodies of pulaskite and nordmarkite.Mount Brome consists of an outer crescent-shaped gabbro body,composed of several cyclical units, and a large syenite bodydivided into a slightly quartz-undersaturated unit (pulaskite)and a slightly oversaturated unit (nordmarkite). The two unitsare chemically similar, but the nordmarkite has elevated initialSr ratios suggesting that crustal contamination is responsiblefor its oversaturation. Both complexes have been intruded bynepheline-bearing diorites, and at Mount Brome, foyaites, tinguaites,and laurdalites. Mount Megantic is located approximately 190km east of Montreal and consists of an outer normarkite annulus,separated by a gabbro-dioritic body from an inner granite plug. Five different magma types have been identified in the easternMonteregian Hills. Type 1, precursor to the gabbros and syenitesat Mounts Shefford and Brome, is an alkali picrite generatedby limited partial melting of a garnet lherzolite, with subsequentevolution controlled by the removal of olivine, pyroxene, andplagioclase. Type 2, precursor to the gabbros and nordmarkitesat Mount Megantic, is apparently produced by moderate partialmelting of a spinel lherzolite, and this magma subsequentlyevolved to a quartz-saturated residuum. Type 3, which producedthe rocks of the strongly undersaturated series, is equivalentto the basanite magmas generated by small degrees of meltingof a spinel lherzolite, which formed similar rocks in the westernMonteregian Hills. The high concentration of incompatible elementsand high-charge-density cations in these magmas indicates thatthe mantle source regions were enriched in these elements. Type4, Mount Shefford nordmarkite, and Type 5, Mount Megantic granite,magmas apparently originated in the crust by partial meltingof, respectively, amphibolite or granulite facies metadioriteand metagraywacke sources.  相似文献

河北省丰宁县坝州营金矿床赋存于五台期侵位的“变闪长岩”中,该区从太古代到中生代长期处于构造隆升剥蚀状态,发育多期岩浆侵位事件,为金矿提供了充分的成矿条件。根据区域地质背景及围岩蚀变、矿化等特征,推断本矿床属于受构造控制的中一低温热液石英脉型金矿。结合矿区地质特征开展地球物理工作,以高密度电法圈定了地下矿化体的范围,辅以音频大地电磁测量,实现探测相对深部断裂构造,并以钻探证实,取得了找矿突破,达到了推断控矿构造的走向和找矿前景等目的。  相似文献

During late May and early June of 1993, we conducted two shallow, high-resolution seismic reflection surveys (Mini-Sosie method) across the southern escarpment of the Benton Hills segment of Crowleys Ridge. The reflection profiles imaged numerous post-late Cretaceous faults and folds. We believe these faults may represent a significant earthquake source zone.

The stratigraphy of the Benton Hills consists of a thin, less than about 130 m, sequence of mostly unconsolidated Cretaceous, Tertiary and Quaternary sediments which uncomfortably overlie a much thicker section of Paleozoic carbonate rocks. The survey did not resolve reflectors within the upper 75–100 ms of two-way travel time (about 60–100 m), which would include all of the Tertiary and Quaternary and most of the Cretaceous. However, the Paleozoic-Cretaceous unconformity (Pz) produced an excellent reflection, and locally a shallower reflector within the Cretaceous (K) was resolved. No coherent reflections below about 200 ms of two-way travel time were identified.

Numerous faults and folds, which clearly offset the Paleozoic-Cretaceous unconformity reflector, were imaged on both seismic reflection profiles. Many structures imaged by the reflection data are coincident with the surface mapped locations of faults within the Cretaceous and Tertiary succession. Two locations show important structures that are clearly complex fault zones. The English Hill fault zone, striking N30°–35°E, is present along Line 1 and is important because earlier workers indicated it has Pleistocene Loess faulted against Eocene sands. The Commerce fault zone striking N50°E, overlies a major regional basement geophysical lineament, and is present on both seismic lines at the southern margin of the escarpment.

The fault zones imaged by these surveys are 30 km from the area of intense microseismicity in the New Madrid seismic zone (NMSZ). If these are northeast and north-northeast oriented fault zones like those at Thebes Gap they are favorably oriented in the modern stress field to be reactivated as right-lateral strike slip faults. Currently, earthquake hazards assessments are most dependent upon historical seismicity, and there are little geological data available to evaluate the earthquake potential of fault zones outside of the NMSZ. We anticipate that future studies will provide evidence that seismicity has migrated between fault zones well beyond the middle Mississippi Valley. The potential earthquake hazards represented by faults outside the NMSZ may be significant.  相似文献

花岗质岩浆的起源、迁移及就位是研究大陆岩石圈流变学特性的重要方面。然而,板内伸展背景下同构造花岗岩体的岩浆来源、就位机制和岩浆流动与区域应力场的关系等问题缺乏系统性的总结。晚中生代期间华北板块东部逐渐变为区域伸展体制,同时中浅部地壳形成一系列的韧性剪切带、变质核杂岩和拆离断层,这些伸展构造往往伴有同剪切变形的花岗岩体。因此,华北东部是系统研究板内伸展背景下同构造花岗岩体的最佳区域。本文选取多个典型的同构造花岗岩体,进行综合分析。通过归纳总结这些同构造岩体的岩石地球化学和年代学资料,发现多数同构造岩体具有多个岩浆源区,且较早就位的中性岩席(单元)往往来自壳幔混合岩浆或新生下地壳的部分熔融,而较晚的酸性岩席(单元)则主要来源于古老下地壳的部分熔融。这一特点反映了同伸展岩体岩浆源区由深至浅的演化规律,也揭示了区域伸展背景下源自地幔的流体和热量是触发地壳部分熔融的重要因素。通过分析岩浆就位过程中围岩和岩体中形成的定向及变形组构,发现华北东部同伸展岩体的就位模式可分为三大类:以扁平岩床或岩基形式就位于中部地壳的水平韧性剪切带内;岩浆以近直立运移的方式形成长轴平行拆离断层的岩基,就位于变质核杂岩核部或拆离断层下盘;岩浆就位于再活化的先存断裂,通过膨胀作用、挤压围岩获得就位空间并使围岩变形,形成类似底辟作用的就位方式。剪切应力和浮力是影响岩浆运移方向的重要力学参数。岩浆自源区上升的过程中浮力起着主要控制作用,就位于韧性剪切带时剪切应力起着控制作用,就位于浅部地壳的脆-韧性过渡带时浮力的作用再次凸显。  相似文献

Granular xenoliths (ejecta) from pyroclastic deposits emplaced during the latest stages of activity of the Alban Hills volcano range from ultramafic to salic. Ultramafic types consist of various proportions of olivine, spinel, clinopyroxene and phlogopite. They show low SiO2, alkalies and incompatible element abundances and very high MgO. However, Cr, Co and Sc are anomalously low, at a few ppm level. Olivine is highly magnesian (up to Fo%=96) and has rather high CaO (1% Ca) and very low Ni (around a few tens ppm) contents. These characteristics indicate a genesis of ultramafic ejecta by thermal metamorphism of a siliceous dolomitic limestone, probably with input of chemical components from potassic magma. The other xenoliths have textures and compositional characteristics which indicate that they represent either intrusive equivalents of lavas or cumulates crystallized from variably evolved ultrapotassic magmas. One sample of the former group has major element composition resembling ultrapotassic rocks with kamafugitic affinity. Some cumulitic rocks have exceedingly high abundances of Th (81–84 ppm) and light rare-earth elements (LREE) (La+Ce=421–498 ppm) and extreme REE fractionation (La/Yb=288–1393), not justified by their modal mineralogy which is dominated by sanidine, leucite and nepheline. Finegrained phases are dispersed through the fractures and within the interstices of the main minerals. Semiquantitative EDS analyses show that Th and LREE occur at concentration levels of several tens of percent in these phases, indicating that their presence is responsible for the high concentration of incompatible trace elements in the whole rocks. The interstitial position of these phases and their association with fluorite support a secondary origin by deposition from fluorine-rich fluids separated from a highly evolved potassic liquid. The Nd isotopic ratios of the cjecta range from 0.51182 to 0.51217. 87Sr/86Sr ratios range from 0.70900 to 0.71036. With the exception of one sample, these values are lower than those of the outcropping lavas, which cluster around 0.7105±3. This indicates either the occurrence of several isotopically distinct potassic magmas or a variable interaction between magmas and wall rocks. However, this latter hypothesis requires selective assimilation of host rocks in order to explain isotopic and geochemical characteristics of lavas and xenoliths. The new data indicate that the evolutionary processes in the potassic magmas of the Alban Hills were much more complex than envisaged by previous studies. Interaction of magmas with wall rocks may be an important process during magmatic evolution. Element migration by gaseous transfer, often invoked but rarely constrained by sound data, is shown to have occurred during the latest stages of magmatic evolution. Such a process was able to produce selective enrichment of Th, U, LREE and, to a minor degree, Ta and Hf in the wall rocks of potassic magma chamber. Finally, the occurrence of xenoliths with kamafugitic composition points to the existence of this type of ultrapotassic magma at the Alban Hills.  相似文献

长江中下游地区是中国重要的成矿带之一。本文利用地震、大地电磁数据以及野外地质调查,并结合前人研究的地球物理和岩石地球化学资料,明确了长江中下游地区现今深部构造,系统分析了其成矿动力学演化机制。本区发育有三大断裂体系:大别-苏鲁前陆断裂系、江南-雪峰断裂系和中国东部NE-NNE向走滑断裂系。大别-苏鲁前陆断裂系为一自北向南的叠瓦式逆冲推覆构造,而江南-雪峰断裂系为一自南向北的多级逆冲推滑构造,它们沿来安-望江-阳新-天门一线形成强烈的挤压对冲构造样式。中国东部NE-NNE向走滑断裂系早期主要表现为左行平移走滑并侧向挤压,参与了对冲构造形成过程,只是部分切割其它两个逆冲体系。这三大断裂体系均经历了印支-燕山期穿时递进的构造变形。152~135Ma,古太平洋板块向欧亚大陆俯冲时,板片可能沿着转换断层撕裂并产生底侵体。下地壳在底侵体的烘烤作用下熔融并受到混染,其岩浆在多级逆冲推覆和滑脱构造背景下充分结晶分异形成低镁埃达克岩,于断隆或隆坳过渡带生成铜矿。135~127Ma,长江中下游成矿带深部地幔开始上隆,诱发加厚岩石圈沿着郯庐断裂带局部拆沉,并引发富集地幔上升流。其与残留地壳交代反应,在郯庐断裂带两侧形成高镁埃达克岩。古太平洋板块继续向南西俯冲并发生逆时针旋转,长江中下游地区大多数NNE向断裂已转变为右行走滑,形成右行右阶的走滑拉分盆地。上隆地幔的基性岩浆沿着深切地壳的走滑断裂上升到盆地中,快速冷却形成橄榄玄粗岩岩系,从而在接触带或潜火山岩体顶部分异产生铁矿。  相似文献

The Monteregian Hills petrographic province of southwesternQuebec, Canada, consists of a series of alkaline intrusionsemplaced along faults associated with the St. Lawrence graben.The intrusions are crudely cylindrical in shape, show verticalcontacts, and apparently extend to great depths. Where observed,igneous foliation is generally steeply dipping. The western intrusions consist of two petrographically distinctgroups. One group is composed of slightly undersaturated tocritically saturated pyroxenites and gabbros, largely of cumulateorigin, and associated slightly quartz-saturated syenites. Thesecond group is composed of strongly to moderately undersaturateddiorites, monzonites, and syenites which contain significantamounts of feldspathoidal minerals. The Oka carbonatite complexbelongs to the latter group. Available age data indicate that these two petrographic groupsrepresent separate periods of igneous activity. The slightlyundersaturated to critically saturated series has a mean ageof 136 Ma, while the strongly to moderately undersaturated serieshas a mean age of 118 Ma. Mounts Royal and St. Bruno are largely composed of gabbros andpyroxenites which belong to the slightly undersaturated to criticallysaturated series. These units consist of variable amounts ofcumulus pyroxene and olivine and intercumulus minerals. Someof the finer-grained gabbros approximate liquid compositions.Major and trace element rock and mineral chemistry demonstratethat the evolution of these magmas was largely controlled bypyroxene and olivine fractionation, with plagioclase appearingon the liquidus late in the crystallization history. The quartz-bearingsyenites at Mt. St. Bruno represent a late stage differentiatewhich was contaminated by siliceous crustal material. The strongly to moderately undersaturated series is representedby the essexites and pulaskites at Mount Johnson and the nepheline-bearingdiorites and feldspathoidal monzonites and syenites at MountRoyal. The petrogenetic relationships between these rocks arecomplex and apparently involve a number of processes includingliquid immiscibility, contamination, and alkali transport. Low initial Sr isotope ratios (0.7032 to 0.7035) for both ofthese rock series indicate a mantle origin. Calculated initialmelts are alkali picrites for the slightly undersaturated tocritically saturated series and basanites for the strongly tomoderately undersaturated series. The alkali picrites can beproduced by an 8 per cent melt of a light rare-earth enrichedgarnet lherzolite source. The basanites require a much morelimited degree of melting (1–2 per cent) of a spinel lherzolitesource. In the case of the basanites, CO2 may have played animportant role in determining the nepheline-normative characterof the magmas.  相似文献

新疆可可托海是世界著名的伟晶岩型稀有金属矿床,该矿床的成因长期存在争议,资源已枯竭多年,其成矿理论及找矿工作均亟待突破。我们对矿区中—上奥陶统哈巴河群变质岩和三叠纪稀有金属花岗岩进行了地质和地球化学研究,并开展了矿区遥感数据解译和地球物理测量工作。结果表明,哈巴河群变质岩以云母片岩为主,与大陆上地壳微量元素含量相似,若以此作为花岗质岩浆的源岩,很难通过部分熔融直接形成含矿熔体;三叠纪稀有金属花岗岩由白云母钠长花岗岩和少量钠长花岗岩组成,其岩浆源于地下深处,在向上运移过程中,经过结晶和流动分异作用,形成富挥发分的含矿岩浆,异地侵位形成稀有金属花岗岩岩枝,矿区存在花岗岩-伟晶岩成矿系统。遥感数据解译显示,矿区发育多个环形影像,这些影像是深部环形构造在浅部的反映,已知的伟晶岩脉及稀有金属花岗岩均赋存其中,指示矿区含矿岩浆活动可能与深部环形构造有关。大地电磁测深显示,在矿区15km以下深处发育低电阻率异常体,反映深部可能存在残余的岩浆房或局部熔融带,矿区花岗质岩浆源于此处;音频大地电磁测深显示,在矿区南北环形构造的深部均存在低电阻率异常。基于上述地质-遥感-地球物理的研究结果,我们预测在矿区之...  相似文献

Many lamprophyre dike and sill rocks in the Monteregian Hills petrographic province of southwestern Quebec contain felsic segregations (ocelli) which have been interpreted as globules of immiscible liquid (Philpotts 1976). Ocelli and matrix material were separated from a number of these rocks and analyzed for major and trace elements. The major element data, when plotted on a Greig diagram, outline a field of possible silicate-liquid immiscibility at higher alumina+alkali content than that previously mapped in iron-rich experimental systems. The trace element data support a liquid immiscibility hypothesis for the formation of these ocelli since high-charge density cations are preferentially concentrated in the matrix (mafic) material, a result which is consistent with theoretical and experimental studies.The distribution of minor and trace elements between ocelli and matrix indicates that several factors control the partitioning of these elements between immiscible felsic and mafic liquids. These factors include the difference in relative polymerization (as measured by the Si∶O ratio) of the two liquids, with an increase in this difference favoring partitioning of the high-charge density cations into the mafic liquid; the concentration of P2O5 in the mafic liquid which favors the partitioning of high-charge density cations into this liquid; the presence of a CO2 vapor (?) phase which favors the partitioning of high-charge density cations into the CO2 enriched phase; and the presence of solid phases at the onset of immiscibility. These observations indicate that the chemical compositions of two possibly immiscible melts should be known if minor and trace element data are to be used as evidence for silicate-liquid immiscibility.  相似文献

闽西南坳陷带矿产资源丰富,是福建省铁、铜、金、煤、石灰岩等金属、非金属矿产的重要产地.永定樟坑-张岩下位于该带的西南部,通过对该区的地质、地球物理等方面的工作,对已发现的主要矿体进行系统的研究,发现了新的矿产地.文章论述了樟坑-张岩下铜多金属矿床的地质与地球物理特征,初步认为是复成因层控型矿床,是由于石炭系与早二叠系碳酸盐岩地层受到中、中酸性岩浆侵入而发生较大规模的夕卡岩化,成矿热液沿断裂面和层间滑脱构造面进一步对碳酸盐岩进行改造、交代而成.  相似文献
