We observed Phoebe for 13 nights over a period of 55 days before, during, and after the 2005 Saturn opposition with the New Mexico State University (NMSU) 1-m telescope at Apache Point Observatory (APO) in Sunspot, NM and characterized the width and magnitude of Phoebe’s opposition surge in BVRI filters. Our observations cover a phase angle range of 4.87° to 0.0509°. We use a Hapke reflectance model incorporating shadow hiding and coherent backscatter to investigate the wavelength dependence of Phoebe’s opposition surge. We find a significant opposition surge magnitude of 55-58% between phase angles of 5° and 0°. We find the strongest opposition surge for phase angles less than 2° in the I-band. The coherent backscatter angular width is on the order of 0.50°. We find Phoebe’s albedo to be spectrally flat within our error limits, with a B-band albedo of 0.0855 ± 0.0031, a V-band albedo of 0.0856 ± 0.0023, an R-band albedo of 0.0843 ± 0.0020, and an I-band albedo of 0.0839 ± 0.0023. We compare Phoebe’s albedo, color, and opposition surge magnitudes and slopes with those of other outer solar system bodies and find similarities to Centaurs, Nereid, Puck, and Comets 19P/Borrelly, 9P/Tempel 1, and 81P/Wild 2. We find that this comparison supports the idea that Phoebe originated in the Kuiper Belt. We also discuss the caveats of using results from a Hapke reflectance model to derive specific surface particle properties.  相似文献

We have extended our earlier work on space weathering of the youngest S-complex asteroid families to include results from asteroid clusters with ages <106 years and to newly identified asteroid pairs with ages <5 × 105 years. We have identified three S-complex asteroid clusters amongst the set of clusters with ages in the range 105-6 years—(1270) Datura, (21509) Lucascavin and (16598) 1992 YC2. The average color of the objects in these clusters agrees with the color predicted by the space weathering model of Willman et al. (Willman, M., Jedicke, R., Nesvorný, D., Moskovitz, N., Ivezi?, Z., Fevig, R. [2008]. Icarus 195, 663-673). SDSS five-filter photometry of the members of the very young asteroid pairs with ages <105 years was used to determine their taxonomic classification. Their types are consistent with the background population near each object. The average color of the S-complex pairs is PC1 = 0.49 ± 0.03, over 5σ redder than predicted by Willman et al. (Willman, M., Jedicke, R., Nesvorný, D., Moskovitz, N., Ivezi?, Z., Fevig, R. [2008]. Icarus 195, 663-673). This may indicate that the most likely pair formation mechanism is a gentle separation due to YORP spin-up leaving much of the aged and reddened surface undisturbed. If this is the case then our color measurement allows us to set an upper limit of ∼64% on the amount of surface disturbed in the separation process. Using pre-existing color data and our new results for the youngest S-complex asteroid clusters we have extended our space weather model to explicitly include the effects of regolith gardening and fit separate weathering and gardening characteristic time scales of τw = 960 ± 160 Myr and τg = 2000 ± 290 Myr respectively. The first principal component color for fresh S-complex material is PC1 = 0.37 ± 0.01 while the maximum amount of local reddening is ΔPC1 = 0.33 ± 0.06. Our first-ever determination of the gardening time is in stark contrast to our calculated gardening time of τg ∼ 270 Myr based on main belt impact rates and reasonable assumptions about crater and ejecta blanket sizes. A possible resolution for the discrepancy is through a ‘honeycomb’ mechanism in which the surface regolith structure absorbs small impactors without producing significant ejecta. This mechanism could also account for the paucity of small craters on (433) Eros.  相似文献

The first results of the observational program devoted to simultaneous investigation of asteroid polarimetric and photometric opposition phenomena are presented. UBVRI polarimetric and V-band photometric observations of the S-type Asteroid 20 Massalia and the E-type Asteroids 214 Aschera and 620 Drakonia were carried out in 1996-1999 down to phase angles of 0.08°, 0.7°, and 1.2°, correspondingly. The S-type Asteroid 20 Massalia is characterized by the pronounced brightness opposition surge with an amplitude larger than that observed for the E-type asteroids. A sharp peak of negative polarization at small phase angles was not observed for this asteroid. The value of polarization degree at phase angle α<1° is less than 0.5% for both S and E types. The negative polarization branches of S and especially E-asteroids have an asymmetrical shape. The phase angle at which the polarization minimum occurs is close to the angle at which non-linear increase begins in the asteroid magnitude phase curves. A relation of the observed effects to the mechanism of coherent backscattering is discussed.  相似文献

Photoelectric observations of the minor planet 127 Johanna were made in the UBV (RI)c photometric system during its apparition in 1991 at the Piszkéstetõ mountain-station of Konkoly Observatory from August to December, when it showed a brightness variation with an amplitude of about 0.2 magnitude. The derived H, G values in the two-parameter magnitude system in V are 8.459 ± 0.013 and 0.114 ± 0.020, respectively. The determined V linear phase coefficient is of 0.036 ± 0.001 (mag/deg). The value of G and the observed values of color indices (U-B), (B-V) confirm that this asteroid belongs to the C taxonomic class as it was previously classified. The estimated effective diameter is between 96 and 118 km if the assumed V geometric albedo is of 0.06 and 0.04, respectively. The available data suggest a pure principal axis rotation mode. The mean synodic rotational period of the asteroid 127 Johanna is 6.94 ± 0.29 h. The uncertainty is due to the changing of aspect geometry. This value of the synodic rotation period means that this asteroid has an intermediate rotation period. The sense of rotation is prograde as indicated by the temporal evolution of the time derivative of the ecliptic longitude of the phase angle bisector as well as with the increasing synodic period of rotation during the same interval (October/November and December in 1991). The composite lightcurves created for short arc time data reveal structures with breakings and linear portions in V; this fact and the Fourier coefficients indicate a probably irregularly shaped body. There are slight indications that the B-V is redder close to the brightness minimum and the V-Rc is redder at the brightness maximum, and the periodic behavior cannot be proved in V-Ic. The less full rotational phase coverage of the observational data is insufficient to construct a shape model. The accurate pole orientation obviously cannot be determined using one opposition lightcurve data only. Further observations are required to get a more accurate knowledge of the physical parameters of this asteroid. For this purpose, a good opportunity to perform observations arose in December 1996, when this asteroid was in opposition at the northernmost declination.  相似文献

Observations of Saturn's distant moon Phoebe were made at far-ultraviolet (FUV) (1100-1900 Å) and extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) (600-1100 Å) wavelengths by the Cassini Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) during the Cassini spacecraft flyby on June 11, 2004. These are the first UV spectra of Phoebe and the first detection of water ice on a Solar System surface using FUV wavelengths. The characteristics of water ice in the FUV are presented, and Hapke models are used to interpret the spectra in terms of composition and grain size; the use of both areal and intimate mixing models is explored. Non-ice species used in these models include carbon, ice tholin, Triton tholin, poly-HCN and kerogen. Satisfactory disk-integrated fits are obtained for intimate mixtures of ∼10% H2O plus a non-ice species. Spatially resolved regions of higher (∼20%) and lower (∼5%) H2O ice concentrations are also detected. Phoebe does not display any evidence of volatile activity. Upper limits on atomic oxygen and carbon are 5×1011 and 2×1012 atoms/cm2, respectively, for solar photon scattering. The UVIS detection of water ice on Phoebe, and the ice amounts detected, are consistent with IR measurements and contribute to the evidence for a Phoebe origin in the outer Solar System rather than in the main asteroid belt.  相似文献

We present near-infrared spectrometer (NIS) observations (0.8 to 2.4 μm) of the S-type asteroid 433 Eros obtained by the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft and report results of our Hapke photometric model analysis of data obtained at phase angles ranging from 1.2° to 111.0° and at spatial resolutions of 1.25×2.5 to 2.75×5.5 km/spectrum. Our Hapke model fits successfully to the NEAR spectroscopic data for systematic color variations that accompany changing viewing and illumination geometry. Model parameters imply a geometric albedo at 0.946 μm of 0.27±0.04, which corresponds to a geometric albedo at 0.550 μm of 0.25±0.05. We find that Eros exhibits phase reddening of up to 10% across the phase angle range of 0-100°. We observe a 10% increase in the 1-μm band depth at high phase angles. In contrast, we observe only a 5% increase in continuum slope from 1.486 to 2.363 μm and essentially no difference in the 2-μm band depth at higher phase angles. These contrasting phase effects imply that there are phase-dependent differences in the parametric measurements of 1- and 2-μm band areas, and in their ratio. The Hapke model fits suggest that Eros exhibits a weaker opposition surge than either 951 Gaspra or 243 Ida (the only other S-type asteroids for which we possess disk-resolved photometric observations). On average, we find that Eros at 0.946 μm has a higher geometric albedo and a higher single-scatter albedo than Gaspra or Ida at 0.56 μm; however, Eros's single-particle phase function asymmetry and average surface macroscopic roughness parameters are intermediate between Gaspra and Ida. Only two of the five Hapke model parameters exhibit a notable wavelength dependence: (1) The single-scatter albedo mimics the spectrum of Eros, and (2) there is a decrease in angular width of the opposition surge with increasing wavelength from 0.8 to 1.7 μm. Such opposition surge behavior is not adequately modeled with our shadow-hiding Hapke model, consistent with coherent backscattering phenomena near zero phase.  相似文献

This study reports the analysis of far ultraviolet (FUV) limb spectra of the airglow of Saturn in the 1150-1850 Å spectral window, obtained with the Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) onboard Cassini, spanning altitudes from −1200 to 4000 km. The FUV limb emission consists of three main contributions: (1) H Ly-α peaking at 1100 km with a brightness of 0.8 kilo-Rayleighs (kR), (2) reflected sunlight longward of 1550 Å which maximizes at −950 km with 16.5 kR and (3) H2 bands in the 1150-1650 Å bandwidth, peaking at 1050 km reaching a maximum of 3.9 kR.A vertical profile of the local H2 volume emission rate has been derived using the hydrocarbon density profiles from a model of the Saturn equatorial atmosphere. It is well matched by a Chapman function, characterized by a maximum value of 3.5 photons cm−3 s−1 in the 800-1650 Å UV bandwidth, peaking at 1020 km.Comparisons between the observed spectra and a first-order synthetic airglow H2 model in the 1150-1650 Å bandwidth show that the spectral shape of the H2 bands is accounted for by solar fluorescence and photoelectron excitation. The best fits are obtained with a combination of H2 fluorescence lines and 20 eV electron impact spectra, the latter contributing ∼68% of the total H2 airglow emission.  相似文献

Six nights of R-band CCD observations of the classical Kuiper Belt Object (KBO) 20000 Varuna (2000 WR106) were obtained at the Palomar Mountain 60- and 200-in telescopes. The observations were scheduled to take advantage of a particularly favorable apparition which allowed us to sample down to extremely small solar phase angle (α=0.036°). After rotational lightcurve subtraction, we found that the KBO exhibited a strong opposition surge of ∼0.1 mag at phase angles α<0.1°. We modeled our composite solar phase curve of Varuna using both H-G parameterization and Hapke theory and concluded that similar opposition surges may be wide spread among KBOs and that the regolith of Varuna may be significantly more porous than a typical main-belt C-type asteroid. Wide-spread opposition surges lead to higher albedos than derived assuming linear phase behavior: on the whole KBOs may be brighter than previously assumed.  相似文献

In this paper the Stardust disk-integrated phase curve at phase 47.2-134.6° of the Asteroid 5535 Annefrank, combined with groundbased observations (at phase 2.3-18.3°), are fit with Hapke’s photometric model. We confirm Newburn et al.’s (Newburn, R.L. et al. [2003]. J. Geophys. Res. 108 (E11), 5117. doi:10.1029/2003JE002106) observation that Annefrank exhibits a steep phase curve. This manifests itself in an unusually high fit surface roughness parameter of 49°. The single particle scattering albedo is 0.62, also high for an S-asteroid, while the fit phase function is more forward scattering than the typical S-asteroid being nearly isotropic with an asymmetry parameter of −0.09. The fit opposition surge width (h = 0.015) is typical of S-asteroids. However these fits assume a spherical shape to the asteroid. Li et al. (Li, J., A’Hearn, M.F., McFadden, L.A. [2004]. Icarus, 415-431) have shown that this assumption may lead to significant errors particularly at high phase angles leading to higher modeled single particle scattering albedos, macroscopic roughnesses and more forward scattering phase functions than actually exhibited. Our results confirm this finding—fitting only the data below 90° phase yields lower particle albedos (0.41) and roughnesses (20°) and more backscattering particles (−0.19) than the fit including the high phase angle data. Overall Annefrank appears to be on the bright side but otherwise is typical for an S-type asteroid suggesting that it may be a recent collisional fragment with a relatively immature surface which has had relatively little time to be weathered.  相似文献

Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) are generally very faint and cannot in practice be monitored with a well-sampled long-term light curve; so our discovery of the bright KBO 2000 EB173 offers an excellent opportunity for synoptic studies. We present a well-sampled photometric time series (77 R and 29 V magnitudes on 78 nights) over a 225-day time span centered on the 2001 opposition. The light curve (corrected to the year 2001 opposition distance) varies from 19.11 to 19.39 mag with a single peak that is smooth, time symmetric, and coincident with opposition. All variations in the light curve are consistent with a linear opposition surge (ROPP=19.083+0.125∗α, where α is the solar phase angle), while any rotational modulation must have a peak-to-peak amplitude of less than 0.097 mag. This is the first measured opposition surge for any KBO (other than Pluto). The VR color is 0.63±0.02, with no apparent variation with phase at the few percent level. With R=19.11 at opposition, 2000 EB173 remains the brightest known KBO and a prime target for future photometric and spectroscopic studies.  相似文献

We present new polarimetric and photometric observations of the high-albedo Asteroid 64 Angelina in the UBVRI wavebands at phase angles ranging from 0.43° to 13.02° during oppositions in 1995, 1999, and 2000/2001. The polarization opposition effect has been observed in the form of a sharp peak of negative polarization with amplitude of about −0.4% centered at αmin≈1.8°, which is superimposed on the regular negative polarization branch. The amplitude of the polarization opposition effect appears to be apparition-dependent. Our photometric data confirm the early detected by Harris et al. [1989. Phase relations of high-albedo asteroids: The unusual opposition brightening of 44 Nysa and 64 Angelina. Icarus 81, 365-374] of a very strong and unusually narrow opposition spike, i.e., brightness opposition effect, for Angelina. Thus, 64 Angelina is the first asteroid for which both the polarization opposition effect and the brightness opposition effect have been detected. We observed that the polarization opposition effect as well as the regular negative polarization branch depends on the wavelength of scattered light, but in different manners. In addition, the colors B-V and V-R show little phase-angle dependence, while the color U-B increases with increasing phase angle, thus indicating that the amplitude of the brightness opposition effect is larger in the U band and almost the same in the B, V, and R bands. It appears that all colors indices begin to increase with decreasing phase angle to zero. The composite lightcurve computed with a period of 8.752 h has amplitude of 0.13 magnitude.  相似文献

We have analyzed the Cassini Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (UVIS) observations of the Jupiter aurora with an auroral atmosphere two-stream electron transport code. The observations of Jupiter by UVIS took place during the Cassini Campaign. The Cassini Campaign included support spectral and imaging observations by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). A major result for the UVIS observations was the identification of a large color variation between the far ultraviolet (FUV: 1100-1700 Å) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV: 800-1100 Å) spectral regions. This change probably occurs because of a large variation in the ratio of the soft electron flux (10-3000 eV) responsible for the EUV aurora to the hard electron flux (∼15-22 keV) responsible for the FUV aurora. On the basis of this result a new color ratio for integrated intensities for EUV and FUV was defined (4πI1550-1620 Å/4πI1030-1150 Å) which varied by approximately a factor of 6. The FUV color ratio (4πI1550-1620 Å/4πI1230-1300 Å) was more stable with a variation of less than 50% for the observations studied. The medium resolution (0.9 Å FWHM, G140M grating) FUV observations (1295-1345 Å and 1495-1540 Å) by STIS on 13 January 2001, on the other hand, were analyzed by a spectral modeling technique using a recently developed high-spectral resolution model for the electron-excited H2 rotational lines. The STIS FUV data were analyzed with a model that considered the Lyman band spectrum (B ) as composed of an allowed direct excitation component (X ) and an optically forbidden component (X followed by the cascade transition ). The medium-resolution spectral regions for the Jupiter aurora were carefully chosen to emphasize the cascade component. The ratio of the two components is a direct measurement of the mean secondary electron energy of the aurora. The mean secondary electron energy of the aurora varies between 50 and 200 eV for the polar cap, limb and auroral oval observations. We examine a long time base of Galileo Ultraviolet Spectrometer color ratios from the standard mission (1996-1998) and compare them to Cassini UVIS, HST, and International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) observations.  相似文献

We analyze data sets obtained with the Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) onboard the Cassini spacecraft after the Saturn Orbit Insertion (SOI). Using the mid-IR interferometer's FP3 channel (600-1100 cm−1), we derive radial temperature profiles for the C ring with a spatial resolution never achieved before. For the first time, the C ring's plateaus and ringlets can be clearly separated from the optically thinner background and their thermal behavior is studied separately for different viewing geometries. In particular, thermal phase curves derived for the plateaus reveal an interesting surge near 0° phase, not observed in the background. We show that mutual shadowing in the plateaus can explain the existence of the surge but is not sufficient to model the phase curves in detail. By analogy with thermal emission of asteroid surfaces we discuss the possible influence of small scale and large scale roughness of the ring structure itself. Because infrared emissivity cannot be derived without being deconvolved from the ‘structural’ filling factor, we examine temperature and filling factors measurements at opposition where the filling factor is most constrained. The occurrence of higher temperatures in the plateaus than in the background near opposition likely arises from enhanced mutual heating between particles, multiple scattering and surface roughness combined with a higher single-scattering albedo.  相似文献

On 5 September 2008, the Rosetta spacecraft encountered the asteroid 2867 Steins on its way to the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. This was the first of two planned asteroid fly-bys performed by the probe, the second fly-by being with the much larger asteroid 21 Lutetia in July 2010. The VIRTIS imaging spectrometer (IFOV 0.250 mrad, overall spectral range 0.25-5.1 μm) onboard Rosetta acquired data of Steins already before the closest approach phase, when the target was spatially unresolved, in order to obtain a light curve of the asteroid in the infrared spectral range extending up to 5 μm, that was never explored before. The VIRTIS light curve campaign started at 11:30 UTC onboard time, when the spacecraft was about 221,377 km away from the target, and ended at 17:58 UTC, at a distance of 20,741 km away from Steins. During this timeframe, the solar phase angle of the asteroid was roughly constant, ranging from 38.2° to 36.3°.Assuming the most recent value derived for the rotational period of Steins (Lamy et al., 2008), the VIRTIS observations covered slightly more than one rotation of the asteroid. In this interval, VIRTIS collected 8 hyperspectral cubes where Steins was captured 119 times, both in the visual and in the infrared range. Given the low signal and the unresolved appearance of the source, for which the instrument was not designed, only a small subset of wavelengths turned out to be suitable to sample the light curve. Nevertheless, in both the VIS and NIR ranges we find a similar trend, with two different maxima and minima during one rotational period, and amplitudes consistent with the results in the visual range obtained in previous works, including the data set acquired by the OSIRIS camera onboard Rosetta. We also report the presence of a new broad feature centered at approximately 0.81-0.82 μm, which is seen in the visual data throughout the rotation of the asteroid.  相似文献

We have observed well-sampled phase curves for nine Trojan asteroids in B-, V-, and I-bands. These were constructed from 778 magnitudes taken with the 1.3-m telescope on Cerro Tololo as operated by a service observer for the SMARTS consortium. Over our typical phase range of 0.2-10°, we find our phase curves to be adequately described by a linear model, for slopes of 0.04-0.09 mag/° with average uncertainty less than 0.02 mag/°. (The one exception, 51378 (2001 AT33), has a formally negative slope of −0.02 ± 0.01 mag/°.) These slopes are too steep for the opposition surge mechanism to be shadow-hiding (SH), so we conclude that the dominant surge mechanism must be coherent backscattering (CB). In a detailed comparison of surface properties (including surge slope, B-R color, and albedo), we find that the Trojans have surface properties similar to the P and C class asteroids prominent in the outer main belt, yet they have significantly different surge properties (at a confidence level of 99.90%). This provides an imperfect argument against the traditional idea that the Trojans were formed around Jupiter’s orbit. We also find no overlap in Trojan properties with either the main belt asteroids or with the small icy bodies in the outer Solar System. Importantly, we find that the Trojans are indistinguishable from other small bodies in the outer Solar System that have lost their surface ices (such as the gray Centaurs, gray Scattered Disk Objects, and dead comets). Thus, we find strong support for the idea that the Trojans originally formed as icy bodies in the outer Solar System, were captured into their current orbits during the migration of the gas giant planets, and subsequently lost all their surface ices.  相似文献

Solar phase curves between 0.3° and 6.0° and color ratios at wavelengths λ=0.336 μm and λ=0.555 μm for Saturn's rings are presented using recent Hubble Space Telescope observations. We test the hypothesis that the phase reddening of the rings is less due to collective properties of the ring particles than to the individual properties of the ring particles. We use a modified Drossart model, the Hapke model, and the Shkuratov model to model reddening by either intraparticle shadow-hiding on fractal and normal surfaces, multiple scattering, or some combination. The modified Drossart model (including only shadowing) failed to reproduce the data. The Hapke model gives fair fits, except for the color ratios. A detailed study of the opposition effect suggests that coherent backscattering is the principal cause of the opposition surge at very small phase angles. The shape of the phase curve and color ratios of each main ring regions are accurately represented by the Shkuratov model, which includes both a shadow-hiding effect and coherent backscatter enhancement. Our analysis demonstrates that in terms of particle roughness, the C ring particles are comparable to the Moon, but the Cassini division and especially the A and B ring particles are significantly rougher, suggesting lumpy particles such as often seen in models. Another conspicuous difference between ring regions is in the effective size d of regolith grains (d∼λ for the C ring particles, d∼1-10 μm for the other rings).  相似文献

Abstract— ESA's Rosetta spacecraft will fly by main‐belt asteroid 2867 Steins on September 5, 2008. We obtained new visible wavelength spectra of 2867 Steins on December 19, 2006 (UT), using the Palomar 5 m telescope and the facility Double Spectrograph. Two sets of spectra, taken ~3 h apart, one half of the rotation period for 2867 Steins, show it to be an E‐type asteroid. The asteroid displays a 0.50 μm feature that is considered diagnostic of the E(II) sub‐class, but is deeper than any previously observed E‐type. This feature is most likely due to the presence of oldhamite (CaS) on the asteroid's surface. Also, the observed Steins spectra are far redder than any other known E‐types. There is potential evidence for heterogeneity on hemispheric scales, one side of the asteroid appearing to be significantly redder than the other. No known recovered meteorite sample matches the unusual spectra of 2867 Steins, but the closest analog would be similar to an enstatite achondrite (aubrite).  相似文献

Near-infrared observations of Europa's disk-integrated opposition surge by Cassini VIMS, first published in Fig. 4 of Brown et al. (2003, Icarus, 164, 461), have now been modeled with the commonly used Hapke photometric function. The VIMS data set emphasizes observations at 16 solar phase angles from 0.4° to 0.6°—the first time the <1° phase “heart” of Europa's opposition surge has been observed this well in the near-IR. This data set also provides a unique opportunity to examine how the surge is affected by changes in wavelength and albedo: at VIMS wavelengths of 0.91, 1.73, and 2.25 μm, the geometric albedo of Europa is 0.81, 0.33, and 0.18, respectively. Despite this factor-of-four albedo range, however, the slope of Europa's phase curve at <1° phase is similar at all three wavelengths (to within the error bars) and this common slope is similar to the phase coefficient seen in visible-light observations of Europa. The two components of the opposition surge—involving different models of the physical cause of the surge—are the Shadow Hiding Opposition Effect (SHOE) and the Coherent Backscatter Opposition Effect (CBOE). Because of sparse VIMS phase coverage, it is not possible to constrain all the surge parameters at once in a Hapke function that has both SHOE and CBOE; accordingly, we performed separate Hapke fits for SHOE-only and CBOE-only surges. At 2.25 μm, where VIMS data are somewhat noisy, both types of surges can mimic the slope of the VIMS phase curve at <1° phase. At 0.91 and 1.73 μm, however—where VIMS data are “cleaner”—CBOE does a noticeably poorer job than SHOE of matching the VIMS phase coefficient at <1° phase; in particular, the best CBOE fit insists on having a steeper phase-curve slope than the data. This discrepancy suggests that Europa's near-IR opposition surge cannot be explained by CBOE alone and must have a significant SHOE component, even at wavelengths where Europa is bright.  相似文献

We present new polarimetric and photometric observations of high-albedo E-type Asteroid 44 Nysa in the BVRI wavebands at phase angles ranging from 0.41° to 7.49° during the 2005 opposition. A bimodal phase-angle dependence of polarization was found for Nysa in the V band. The polarization opposition effect was revealed in the form of a secondary minimum of negative polarization with amplitude ∼0.3% centered at a phase angle ∼0.8°. It is superimposed on the regular negative polarization branch with minimal polarization −0.30% at a phase angle 5.8°. We analyzed all available polarimetric data for E-type Asteroids 44 Nysa, 64 Angelina, and 214 Ashera and confirmed the presence of the polarization opposition effect for high-albedo asteroids at phase angle ∼1° with an amplitude ∼0.35%. The magnitude-phase curves reveal the presence of spike-like opposition effect of brightness for 44 Nysa in the BVRI spectral bands. 44 Nysa is the second high-albedo asteroid after 64 Angelina for which both the polarization opposition effect and the brightness opposition effect are detected. The differences between the parameters of the opposition effects for silicate surfaces (44 Nysa, 64 Angelina, Io) and icy surfaces (Europa, Ganymede, Iapetus, Saturn's rings) are discussed. The specific morphological parameters of opposition effects, in particular the angular width of the polarization opposition effect is comparable to that of the brightness opposition effect, provide almost unequivocal evidence that they are caused by coherent backscattering. One of unexpected results of our investigation is that 44 Nysa becomes bluer with increasing phase angle, while 64 Angelina shows phase reddening.  相似文献
