Geomorphological processes are an integral part of ecosystem functioning and ecosystem functioning affects geomorphological processes. Increasingly widespread acknowledgement of this simple idea is manifest in a vigorous research community engaged with questions that address the two‐way interaction between biota and geomorphology, at a range of scales and in a variety of terrestrial and aquatic environments. Geomorphological disturbances are a core element of biogeomorphological interest, and although the disciplines of geomorphology and ecology have each developed languages and theories that help to explore, model and understand disturbance events, little attempt has been made to draw together these approaches. Following a brief review of these issues, we introduce thirteen papers that investigate the interactions and feedbacks between geomorphological disturbance regimes and ecosystem functions. These papers reveal the singularity of wildfire impacts, the importance of landsliding for carbon budgeting and of vegetation accumulation for landsliding, the zoogeomorphic role of iconic and ‘Cinderella’ animals in fluvial geomorphology, biophysical interactions in aeolian, fluvial and torrential environments and the utility of living ecosystems as archives of geomorphic events. Most of these papers were first presented in a conference session at the European Geoscience Union General Assembly in 2010 and several others are from recent volumes of Earth Surface Processes and Landforms. Following the 1st International Workshop on Waves, Storm Surges and Coastal Hazards, which incorporated the 15th session of the long-standing the International Workshop on Wave Hindcasting and Forecasting, in September 2017 in Liverpool, United Kingdom, a topical collection has appeared in recent issues of Ocean Dynamics. Here, we give a brief overview of the 15 papers published in this topical collection as well as an overview of the widening scope of the conference in recent years. The continuing trend towards closer integration between the wave and ocean modeling communities is reflected in this workshop, culminating in the renaming of the workshop, while maintaining the connection with the three-decade long history of the wave workshop. This is also seen in this topical collection, with several papers exploring wave-generated storm surge, wave-tide contributions to coastal flooding, forcing a global ocean model with fluxes from a wave model and interaction between surface waves and sea ice.

Marine and river bedforms are rhythmic features driven by unidirectional or reversing currents and waves. They are ubiquitous on the floors of rivers, estuaries, coastal and marine settings. Despite a considerable history of dedicated studies, many aspects of their origin, development and dynamics are still the subject of scientific debate in various disciplines. The MARID conferences series hosts experts from geosciences, physics, engineering and other disciplines to provide a platform for the interdisciplinary exchange of fundamental and applied knowledge of marine and river dune dynamics. MARID VI took place in April 2019 in Bremen, Germany. Related scientific contributions are presented in this special issue of Earth Surface Processes and Landforms. An overview of the conference series and the specifics of MARID VI, as well as considerations in the context of equity, diversity and inclusion, are given. Following the 14th International Workshop on Wave Hindcasting and Forecasting and 5th Coastal Hazards Symposium in November 2014 in Key West, Florida, a topical collection has appeared in recent issues of Ocean Dynamics. Here, we give a brief overview of the 16 papers published in this topical collection as well as an overview of the widening scope of the conference in recent years. A general trend in the field has been towards closer integration between the wave and ocean modelling communities. Fifteen papers are included in Volume 2 of a PAGEOPH topical issue Tsunamis in the World Ocean: Past, Present, and Future. These papers are briefly introduced. They are grouped into three categories: reports and studies of recent tsunamis, studies on tsunami statistics and application to tsunami warning, and modeling studies of tsunami runup and inundation. Most of the papers were presented at the 24th International Tsunami Symposium held 14–16 July 2009 in Novosibirsk, Russia, and reflect the current state of tsunami science.  相似文献

This commentary brings together, as a virtual Special Issue, a number of recent papers in Earth Surface Processes and Landforms that are all related to issues of scale in soil erosion. Empirical concepts that were developed in the 1940s are now in need of re‐thinking, and papers are increasingly exploring, through modelling and measurement, appropriate ways to recognize the mechanisms that connect processes across time and space scales. Issues include a more nuanced approach to selective transportation, responses to variability in surface and sub‐surface conditions and the need to analyse measurements in ways that can be transferred between sites and storms. Summary A solution of the direct gravity problem for a finite body with variable density is given. The method is based on Green's formula and is applicable when a particular solution of Poisson's equation is known. The attraction due to the body is expressed by integrals over its surface The exact solution of the direct gravity problem, as known from the theory of two-dimensional fields [1–3], is closely connected with the problem of the analytic continuation of the exterior field of the attracting mass system into its interior. In the first place, this is a problem of determining the singularities of the exterior field, their distribution within the system and their nature. This approach to the solution of the direct problem is also meaningful from the point of view of determining the characteristics of the attracting system and, therefore, also of solving the inverse problem. In the case of two-dimensional fields the methods of analytical continuation were widely developed in a series of well-known papers by V. N. Strakhov, and they are mainly based on the methods of the theory of the functions of the complex variable. These methods were also successfully applied by Tsirulskii and Golizdra [1, 2] in treating the homogeneous and inhomogeneous, two-dimensional direct problem by means of Cauchy's integrals. This article reports on the Special Issue of Earth Surface Processes and Landforms dedicated to planetary dune analogues and the advances that have been made through the integration of remote sensing and terrestrial field data to better model and understand aeolian systems. The 11 articles presented demonstrate a spectrum of analytical techniques that are employed to investigate ripples, dunes, draa and ergs across a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Nine of the papers involve innovative research about aeolian bedforms and processes, while the final two papers are examples of how vast quantities of data may be organized and scrutinized using a GIScience approach. Based on these 11 papers and the many abstracts archived in a series of three planetary dunes workshops at the Lunar Planetary Institute ( http://www.lpi.usra.edu/publications/abstracts.shtml ; LPI Contributions 1403, 1552, and 1673) it is evident that there exists diverse and complementary approaches to the comparative study of landforms and processes for terrestrial and extra‐terrestrial aeolian landscapes that is driven by a vibrant international community of scientists and educators that engage in the cross‐fertilization of ideas. This paper is the third one of a series of three papers on the fluid evolution of the crust-upper mantle and the causes of earthquakes. Based on the last two papers, a model of the crustal resistivity structure and the deep-seated fluid evolution is presented, and also a seismogeny theory is set up, which is called the potential-kinetic energy transformation model. In this model, the crustal deep-seated fluid evolution is considered to take the most important effect on the seismogenic process. Taking the Tangshan M7.8 earthquake of 1976 as an example, the earthquakes occurred in a pull-apart rifting basin are analyzed, and finally the crust outgassing in the seismogenic processes is discussed, referring to the here-presented theory of seismogeny. Theoretical, modeling, experimental and monitoring of sediment transport in gravel bed rivers are introduced. The key findings of 27 papers on this theme were published in Earth Surface Processes and Landforms during the past year. Among these, 18 papers were published by attendants of the 8th Gravel Bed River Workshop held in Japan in 2015. This Commentary introduces the main themes associated with these papers including innovations in sediment transport conceptualization and modeling and monitoring, and also three wider themes: the importance of sediment supply; relationships between gravel bed river science and restoration; and the growing recognition of the critical role played by wood in gravel bed rivers.
