In-place recycling of asphalt pavement materials is a sustainable rehabilitation method. Existing hot-mix asphalt (HMA) layer is pulverized and blended with some or the entire base course and possibly some subgrade to form a broadly graded material referred to as recycled pavement material (RPM). The RPM is then compacted as the new base course and overlaid by a new layer of HMA. In some occasions, additives are added to increase the strength of RPM base course, such as cement, emulsion, fly ash. It is plausible to utilize high calcium high carbon fly ash, as the high level of carbon prevents fly ash from being used in concrete. A series of laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of these materials, including crushed aggregate, untreated RPM, and treated RPM with high carbon fly ash. The tests included compaction, California Bearing Ratio, resilient modulus, and unconfined compressive strength for treated RPM. The engineering properties of these materials were compared.  相似文献

Summary The purpose of this study is to statistically correlate the fragmentation gradient () and average fragment size () with the blasting test parameters for rock masses having different characteristics. Blasting tests were conducted in limestone exposed during the highway construction between Tarsus and Pozanti (Turkey). Three test sites were classified as poor rock, good rock, and very good rock according to their RMR ratings. The selected blasting test parameters that affect the degree of fragmentation were burden, bench height and ANFO charge. After each blast, the muckpiles were screened and fragment size distribution graphs were plotted. Yates' method was applied for experimental design and analysis of variance. The single and combined effects of blasting test parameters were analyzed through the Yates' tables and significant and non-significant treatment combinations were determined for different rock masses. Some conclusions drawn from this research are: 1. The increase of RMR ratings promotes fragmentation, hence, increases blasting efficiency. 2. In rock masses of low RMR ratings, the volume of broken material is large, but fragmentation into small sizes is low. The opposite is true for rock masses of high RMR ratings. 3. The length of charge column is the significant factor affecting the average fragment size regardless the type of rock mass and is more significant in very good quality rock mass.  相似文献

Alkali-aggregate reactivity (AAR) involves a reaction between the pore solution of concrete and certain minerals found in some aggregates. To assess the potential AAR various physical and chemical tests are available and extensively used. The petrographic examination is the initial assessment that decides the further investigation for potential reactivity of an aggregate. A chemical approach is another option to assess the aggregate for potential AAR. The accelerated mortar bar method and concrete prism tests are other very important tests for determination of potential AAR of aggregates samples. However, a combination of the results of all the techniques provides most reliable results for potential AAR in aggregates. Moreover, each test represents the stepwise investigation and provides the decision for the test of next approach. Petrographic examination and chemical test methods are the quick decision-making methods for the estimation of potential AAR. In some cases, by these two methods, the aggregate can be selected and rejected confidently. However, for critical values or doubtful aggregates, further tests are necessary to develop a higher confidence level of the results. The present study comprises of the assessment of the alkali-reactivity of siliceous and carbonate aggregates using petrographic and chemical approaches. X-ray diffraction analysis was used as a complementary method to the petrographic evaluation. Moreover, under chemical approach, two separate test methods were used for siliceous and carbonate aggregates. The study also included a comparison between the petrographic examination and chemical analysis for the same aggregate samples and found significant results.  相似文献

Most blasting operations are associated with various forms of energy loss, emerging as environmental side effects of rock blasting, such as flyrock, vibration, airblast, and backbreak. Backbreak is an adverse phenomenon in rock blasting operations, which imposes risk and increases operation expenses because of safety reduction due to the instability of walls, poor fragmentation, and uneven burden in subsequent blasts. In this paper, based on the basic concepts of a rock engineering systems (RES) approach, a new model for the prediction of backbreak and the risk associated with a blast is presented. The newly suggested model involves 16 effective parameters on backbreak due to blasting, while retaining simplicity as well. The data for 30 blasts, carried out at Sungun copper mine, western Iran, were used to predict backbreak and the level of risk corresponding to each blast by the RES-based model. The results obtained were compared with the backbreak measured for each blast, which showed that the level of risk achieved is in consistence with the backbreak measured. The maximum level of risk [vulnerability index (VI) = 60] was associated with blast No. 2, for which the corresponding average backbreak was the highest achieved (9.25 m). Also, for blasts with levels of risk under 40, the minimum average backbreaks (<4 m) were observed. Furthermore, to evaluate the model performance for backbreak prediction, the coefficient of correlation (R 2) and root mean square error (RMSE) of the model were calculated (R 2 = 0.8; RMSE = 1.07), indicating the good performance of the model.  相似文献

Samples of pyroclastic rocks from Abakaliki area (Nigeria) were subjected to geological and geochemical tests to determine the suitability and durability of the rocks as concrete aggregate. Petrographic analysis shows fine-grained texture and predominance of plagioclase (21–60 %) and shaley-muddy lithic fragment, while geochemical analysis classifies the rocks as alkaline. Analysis indicates that the pyroclastics would likely perform marginally well as concrete aggregates, especially in heavy Portland cement concrete and bituminous concrete. This is due to appreciably high values of natural moisture content, low bulk density, relative density and specific gravity, which suggests low durability, high voids and less aggregate absorption in concrete and bitumen mixes. The rocks are rated as moderate to high strength material on the basis of their unconfined compressive strength values, but are very likely to have low durability as buttressed by poor sulphate soundness test results, probably due to high amount of weak minerals. Analyses reveal that the Abakaliki Pyroclastics are not completely satisfactory as concrete aggregates source, despite their origin, texture, strength and economic availability. Hence, caution is required when they are used in concrete projects.  相似文献

Application of Dynamic Compaction in Highway: A Case Study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The application case of dynamic compaction (DC) is realized in highway. In this paper, the in situ tests for evaluating effectiveness of DC are performed on a liquefiable soil and soft soil interbedding foundation encountered in highway engineering practice. Excess pore pressure, total surface settlement and lateral deformation under DC impact are measured and analysed. The cone penetration test (CPT) and spectral analysis of surface wave (SASW) are used for investigating the compaction effectiveness. The formulation of the predicting improvement depth of the DC is presented according to the pseudo-static mechanics method and is of obvious meaning of soil mechanics compared with Mendard’s formulation. The calculating results of the formulation of improvement depth of the DC are agreement with the measuring results. The investigation results indicate that the DC technique is an effective way for improving liquefiable soil and soft soil interbedding foundation in highway engineering practice.  相似文献

In any open cast mine, the management of stripped spoil during mining is crucial to the mine’s successful operation. The improper management of the overburden (OB) dump can result in stability issues which may affect safety and production of the mine. Various literatures have reported the failure of open pit dumps and the consequences in loss of life, production and impact on neighbouring amenities. Recently, the failure of an out-of-pit OB dump at an Indian Colliery was reported. The failed OB dump displaced spoil approximately 70 m from the original location of the dump toe and impacted on neighbouring amenities. This paper back analyse material properties and investigates the probable mechanism of this OB failure. Well established tools including limiting equilibrium and continuum numerical methods have been used to understand and identify the failure kinematics of this dump. It has been found that the residual friction angle of the material comprising the dump structural unit dominates stability. Mobilisation of residual strength can occur by operational induced strains and/or the presence of water. The shear strength of the foundation was fully mobilised and provided a slip surface for the overlying dump material. The resultant failure is manifest as a bilinear wedge movement of two ridged blocks defined by linear rupture planes.  相似文献

Roadway instability has always been a major concern in deep underground coal mines where the surrounding rock strata and coal seams are weak and the in situ stresses are high. Under the high overburden and tectonic stresses, roadways could collapse or experience excessive deformation, which not only endangers mining personnel but could also reduce the functionality of the roadway and halt production. This paper describes a case study on the stability of roadways in an underground coal mine in Shanxi Province, China. The mine was using a longwall method to extract coal at a depth of approximately 350 m. Both the coal seam and surrounding rock strata were extremely weak and vulnerable to weathering. Large roadway deformation and severe roadway instabilities had been experienced in the past, hence, an investigation of the roadway failure mechanism and new support designs were needed. This study started with an in situ stress measurement programme to determine the stress orientation and magnitude in the mine. It was found that the major horizontal stress was more than twice the vertical stress in the East–West direction, perpendicular to the gateroads of the longwall panel. The high horizontal stresses and low strength of coal and surrounding rock strata were the main causes of roadway instabilities. Detailed numerical modeling was conducted to evaluate the roadway stability and deformation under different roof support scenarios. Based on the modeling results, a new roadway support design was proposed, which included an optimal cable/bolt arrangement, full length grouting, and high pre-tensioning of bolts and cables. It was expected the new design could reduce the roadway deformation by 50 %. A field experiment using the new support design was carried out by the mine in a 100 m long roadway section. Detailed extensometry and stress monitorings were conducted in the experimental roadway section as well as sections using the old support design. The experimental section produced a much better roadway profile than the previous roadway sections. The monitoring data indicated that the roadway deformation in the experimental section was at least 40–50 % less than the previous sections. This case study demonstrated that through careful investigation and optimal support design, roadway stability in soft rock conditions can be significantly improved.  相似文献

Interpolated grids of coal bed thickness are being considered for use in a proposed method for taxation of coal in the state of West Virginia (United States). To assess the origin and magnitude of possible inaccuracies in calculated coal tonnage, we used conditional simulation to generate equiprobable realizations of net coal thickness for two coals on a 7 min topographic quadrangle, and a third coal in a second quadrangle. Coals differed in average thickness and proportion of original coal that had been removed by erosion; all three coals crop out in the study area. Coal tonnage was calculated for each realization and for each interpolated grid for actual and artificial property parcels, and differences were summarized as graphs of percent difference between tonnage calculated from the grid and average tonnage from simulations. Coal in individual parcels was considered minable for valuation purposes if average thickness in each parcel exceeded 30 inches. Results of this study show that over 75% of the parcels are classified correctly as minable or unminable based on interpolation grids of coal bed thickness. Although between 80 and 90% of the tonnages differ by less than 20% between interpolated values and simulated values, a nonlinear conditional bias might exist in estimation of coal tonnage from interpolated thickness, such that tonnage is underestimated where coal is thin, and overestimated where coal is thick. The largest percent differences occur for parcels that are small in area, although because of the small quantities of coal in question, bias is small on an absolute scale for these parcels. For a given parcel size, maximum apparent overestimation of coal tonnage occurs in parcels with an average coal bed thickness near the minable cutoff of 30 in. Conditional bias in tonnage for parcels having a coal thickness exceeding the cutoff by 10 in. or more is constant for two of the three coals studied, and increases slightly with average thickness for the third coal.  相似文献

Waste management issue in mining industry has become increasingly important. In this regard, construction of tailings dams plays a major role. Most of the tailings dams require some kinds of remedial actions during their operational lifetime, among which heightening is the most common. In the first stage of the remedial provisions for Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex tailings dam in Iran, it has been decided to use hydrocyclone method to provide suitable construction material due to the high cost associated with using borrow materials for heightening of the dam. To undertake this project a series of laboratory experiments was performed to determine the copper ‘original tailings’ and ‘cycloned materials’ geotechnical characteristics to evaluate the applicability of the cycloned materials for construction purposes. Different laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the grain-size distribution, Atterberg limits, specific gravity, maximum density, shear strength parameters, consolidation coefficient, and hydraulic conductivity. The results were compared with those of similar mines to check whether they follow the trends observed in other copper tailing materials elsewhere. Variation of the cohesion and internal friction angle versus different compaction ratios were studied in order to determine realistic shear strength parameters for tailing dam stability analysis. In this study, using oedometer test, a mild linear relation between void ratio and the consolidation coefficient has been found for tailings materials. By considering the effects of void ratio and weight of passing sieve #200 materials, a new relationship is proposed that can be used for estimating the copper slimes hydraulic conductivity in seepage analysis of tailings dams.  相似文献

为更方便、有效的勘察干旱半干旱地区的浅层地下水信息,以辽宁省朝阳市区域为研究区,以2004~2010年TM多光谱数据为基础,利用修正归一化水体差异指数提取了多年的地表土壤湿度信息。通过对土壤湿度信息分级并对植被、岩石以及地表水体进行掩模处理,得到了土壤湿度信息的分级图。同时,为了比较土壤湿度较大地区地下水的赋存信息,进行了实地考察并对比水文地质资料,认为基本与遥感所得结论一致,证明了该方法在半干旱地区的可行性与有效性。  相似文献

铊是13种优先控制的有毒有害重金属元素之一,研究微生物与铊之间的相互作用有重要的理论意义和应用价值。在黔西南滥木厂铊矿区采集土壤和沉积物,借助平板筛选法在铊浓度为1000 mg/L水平筛选得到九株高耐受性菌株,用于真菌对铊的胞外吸附作用实验,并采用液体发酵法考察真菌对铊的胞外吸附作用,实验设计了1000 mg/L、1200 mg/L和1500mg/L三种铊处理水平,借助ICP-MS检测分析样品的铊含量,以此计算吸附效率。结果表明,三种处理水平中,真菌菌株对铊的吸附效率为4.63%~16.89%,且随着环境中铊浓度的上升,菌丝体(或菌丝球)生物量明显减少,导致吸附效率的下降;真菌对常量元素如钙、钠、钾的吸附与对铊的吸附呈显著正相关。这表明真菌细胞对钙、钾的吸附方式可能与对铊的吸附方式类似。  相似文献
