For two fields of the Virgo cluster of galaxies a photometry in B, V, and R has been performed. A total of 72 galaxies has been identified and their magnitudes and diameters have been determined.  相似文献

The CfAl Catalog of Huchra et al. is examined for identification of groups of galaxies with the use of a variation of the percolation method previously used by Huchra and Geller. The main difference between our method and Huchra-Geller method is in the selection criterion for components. We use the value of the gravitational field potential to determine component galaxies. This approach is physically more valid than the distances between galaxies. It is shown that the selection parameters E0 and V0 need not be changed with distance to account for changes in the observed luminosity function of galaxies. Thus, it is unnecessary in our approach to use the luminosity function of galaxies for identification of groups. The dependence of the main characteristics of groups on the selection parameters is investigated. The interval of the selection parameters within which the group characteristics are least dependent on these parameters is determined. Groups of galaxies detected with any pairs of E0 and V0 values from these intervals can be considered essentially real. We study the mass-radius relationship for aggregates of galaxies, viz. binaries, small groups and clusters. The data are subjected to a simple best-fit analysis similar to the one carried out earlier for individual field galaxies. The analysis shows that: (i) The data on binary galaxies are consistent with the assumption that binaries are just two galaxies, each with an individual isothermal (M ∫R) dark matter halo, moving under the mutual gravitational attraction, (ii) The data on the groups of galaxies are too scattered to obey a single power-law relation of the formM = kR n with any degree of reliability, (iii) The data on groups and clusters fit better with a law of the formM = AR 3 +BR. This form suggests the existence of two components in dark matter—one which is clustered around the galaxies (M ∫R) and another which is distributed smoothly (M ∫R 3 ). The smooth distributions becomes significant only at scales ≥ 1 Mpc and hence does not affect binaries significantly. We briefly discuss the theoretical implications of this analysis  相似文献

We present the first results of our X‐shooter observations for a sample of dwarf (–17 < MB < –15) galaxies in nearby (0.04 < z < 0.07) galaxy clusters. This luminosity range is fundamental to trace the evolution of higher‐z star‐forming cluster galaxies down to the present day, and to explore the galaxy scaling relations of early‐type galaxies over a broad mass range. Thanks to high resolution and availability of several lines we can derive the velocity dispersion of the galaxies in this range of luminosities and we begin the construction of the fundamental plane of faint early‐type galaxies (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We examine the relation between the global parameters of spiral galaxies and their morphological type. We have represented the rotational velocityV at a radius of 25 mag arc sec–2 against this radiusR for a sample of 56 galaxies. Different types of galaxies appear separated on this diagram. We have plotted above theV-R diagram isolines of total mass, angular momentum and mean surface density for isolated galaxies with circular motion in centrifugal equilibrium showing: (1) That the parameter that represents the morphological type is the mean surface density or its observational parameterV 2/R. (2) From aV-R diagram we can easily see what kinds of correlations we expect to find between the global properties of galaxies and their morphological type. (3) For every morphological type of galaxies there is a critical mass above which there is a change in its dynamical behaviour. Finally, consideringV 2/R as representative of the morphological type, we can deduce theoretically the empirical Tully-Fisher relation and the dependence of the slope and the zero point on the morphological type. The separation in logV that we expect to find for different types of galaxies for a constant luminosity is the same order as the experimental errors in the determination of logV. This explains the tight power-law relationship observed between this and the luminosity.  相似文献

We discuss observations of the first galaxies, within cosmic reionization, at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths. We present a summary of current observations of the host galaxies of the most distant QSOs (z∼6). These observations reveal the gas, dust, and star formation in the host galaxies on kpc-scales. These data imply an enriched ISM in the QSO host galaxies within 1 Gyr of the big bang, and are consistent with models of coeval supermassive black hole and spheroidal galaxy formation in major mergers at high redshift. Current instruments are limited to studying truly pathologic objects at these redshifts, meaning hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (L FIR ∼1013 L ). ALMA will provide the one to two orders of magnitude improvement in millimeter astronomy required to study normal star forming galaxies (i.e. Ly-α emitters) at z∼6. ALMA will reveal, at sub-kpc spatial resolution, the thermal gas and dust—the fundamental fuel for star formation—in galaxies into cosmic reionization.  相似文献

From prints of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey the widths of the equatorial dust layers of a sample of 39 galaxies seen on edge are obtained to be in the range 500 ≤ D ≤ 1600 pc. The width of a dust layer seems to be correlated with the luminosity of the galaxy. The dust lanes of field galaxies are obviously broader than those of the members of the Virgo cluster. This result may be interpreted as a dust deficiency caused by stripping of interstellar matter resulting from galactic collisions and interaction of the galaxies with the intracluster medium.  相似文献

We use optical color indices (colors) from the SDSS database to study the effect of dust in starburst galaxies by mea‐suring the dependence of colors on galaxy inclination. Starburst galaxies with ongoing star formation, are rich with metals/dust and are, therefore, an excellent objects for studying the effect of dust in galaxies. They are selected using the [O III ]λ 5007/Hα vs. [N II ]λ 6584/Hβ diagram, that is, the BPT‐diagram. We use Kauffmann's empirical demarcation line in the BPT‐diagram to exclude galaxies with active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the sample because they have different physical and dust properties from normal galaxies. The sample is divided into bins according to galaxy stellar mass and 4000 Å break (which is a coarse measure of a galaxy star formation history; SFH) and the reddening with inclination is studied as a function of these two physical parameters. Assuming that the dust effect is negligible in the SDSS z ‐band, we derive the attenuation curves for these galaxies. The Eridanus galaxies follow the well-known radio—FIR correlation. The majority (70%) of these galaxies have their star formation rates below that of the Milky Way. The galaxies that have a significant excess of radio emission are identified as low luminosity AGNs based on their radio morphologies obtained from the GMRT observations. There are no powerful AGNs (L 20cm > 1023 W Hz−1) in the group. The two most far-infrared and radio luminous galaxies in the group have optical and HI morphologies suggestive of recent tidal interactions. The Eridanus group also has two far-infrared luminous but radio-deficient galaxies. It is believed that these galaxies are observed within a few Myr of the onset of an intense star formation episode after being quiescent for at least a 100 Myr. The upper end of the radio luminosity distribution of the Eridanus galaxies (L 20cm ∼ 1022 W Hz−1) is consistent with that of the field galaxies, other groups, and late-type galaxies in nearby clusters.  相似文献

The data of Paper I (Doddet al., 1986), representing a catalogue of parameters measured for bright galaxies in field 444 of the Southern Sky Survey, are examined in a search for non-random effects. A global trend of bimodal alignment of galaxies in this field is found. This effect is present even for galaxies of large apparent ellipticity (e0.5) and is interpreted as revealing a real physical phenomenon on the large scale in this field. Analysis of nearest neighbouring pairs of galaxies reveals evidence also for small-scale interactions. The difference in apparent ellipticities between close pairs is larger than would be expected if the galaxies were randomly distributed. Nearest neighbouring galaxies also show a strong preference to be aligned with their major axes parallel. The results are discussed with regard to theories for galaxy formation.  相似文献

A nearby group of galaxies, centered at the spiral galaxy NGC 972 and conspicuously rich in faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies, has been investigated photometrically on the B and V plates, obtained with the Tautenburg 2m Schmidt telescope. For ten certain and probable group members the equivalent B and V brightness profiles have been extracted. Integrated magnitudes and mean colours of faint group members have been estimated. Typically, the dwarfs show a “subexponential” (i.e. a convex curvature over the linear radius) surface brightness profile and often a central excess. Their equivalent profiles are reasonably well fitted by modified isothermal (King) models.  相似文献

The distance modulus of the Virgo cluster has been reexamined based on the Tully-Fisher relation between fully corrected B. 1 0 values and 21 cm velocity width derived from RC3 catalogue for spiral galaxies of Sbc-Sdm types, belonging to the “low-velocity” Virgo subcluster, singled out according to the statistical method proposed by Anosova, and led to the value μ = 31.15 ± 0.57 mag. A strong dependence of the intrinsic scatter in the Tully-Fisher relation on the apparent axes ratio of galaxies has been found, with a value of 0.4 mag for strongly flattened, highly inclined galaxies and galaxies with small inclinations and a value of 0.72 mag for objects with intermediate values of axes ratio. The restriction to samples only with galaxies with photoelectric observations does not lead to a considerable change of amplitude of scatter and decreases the value the of distance modulus. The result of SANDAGE and TAMMANN (1975) that the peculiar motion of the galaxies superimposed on the HUBBLE flow is probably smaller than 50 km/s shows that the kinetic energy density of the “galaxy gas” was always smaller than the energy density of radiation or matter if the galaxies were formed later than z ≈︂ 104. The distributionsf(z) of the redshifts for active galaxies (Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, and quasars) have been studied. Some statistically-significant maxima and minima are observed in the distributionsf(z) for these objects. The significance of peaks and gaps increases for the brighter objects, for which the samples are more complete. The clustering of the Seyfert galaxies is significantly different from that of the nearby normal galaxies. The distributionf(z) for the radio galaxies is similar to the analogous distribution for the galaxy clusters. Three of the five peaks in the distributionf(z) for the radio quasars may be caused by the selection effects. Two peaks within the intervalsz (0.5, 0.7) and (1.0, 1.1) are probably real. The corresponding scales of the QSO clustering along the line-of-sight are about 100h –1 Mpc (h is the Hubble constant in the units of 75 km s–1 Mpc–1). The possibility of some global quasi-periodical cycles for the processes of activity is discussed. The period of a cycle for the Seyfert and radio galaxies is about 1×108 years that corresponds to the distances of about 30h –1 Mpc between the shells.  相似文献

We present a catalog of 520 most isolated nearby galaxies with angular velocities V LG < 3500 km/s, covering the entire sky. This population of “space orphans” makes up 4.8% among 10 900 galaxies with measured radial velocities. We describe the isolation criterion used to select our sample, called the “Local Orphan Galaxies”(LOG), and discuss their basic optical and HI properties. A half of the LOG catalog is occupied by the Sdm, Im and Ir morphological type galaxies without a bulge. The median ratio M gas/M star in the LOG galaxies exceeds 1. The distribution of the catalog galaxies on the sky looks uniform with some signatures of a weak clustering on the scale of about 0.5 Mpc. The LOG galaxies are located in the regions where the mean local density of matter is approximately 50 times lower than the mean global density. We indicate a number of LOG galaxies with distorted structures, which may be the consequence of interaction of isolated galaxies with massive dark objects.  相似文献

The near and mid-IR properties of barred and unbarred spiral galaxies are discussed on the basis of complete samples that were compiled earlier. The two types of spirals are shown not to differ from one another in emission power in the near and mid-IR ranges. Multiple regression and principal component analysis have been applied to investigate near and mid-IR properties of SB and SA galaxies, particularly their relation to X-ray and radio continuum emissions. There are definite differences between SB and SA spirals in the near and mid-IR. In the case of SB galaxies, the compactness of 10 m emission is closely related to the J - H color index, and the redder J - H color corresponds to relatively more extended emission at 10 m. It is assumed that these are caused by the bar itself, which stimulates enhanced star formation in a barred galaxy with respect to unbarred spiral.  相似文献

By use of the ANS ultraviolet fluxes, optical (UBV) and IRAS infrared fluxes, several colour indices for a few Markarian galaxies have been investigated. A comparison of these indices with those for normal NGC galaxies has been carried out. Similarities and differences in the indices for the two groups of galaxies have been discussed and possible causes have been indicated.  相似文献
