This study reports a geochemical investigation of two thick basalt sequences, exposed in the Bracco–Levanto ophiolite (northern Apennine, Italy) and in the Balagne ophiolite (central-northern Corsica, France). These ophiolites are considered to represent an oceanward and a continent-near paleogeographic domain of the Jurassic Liguria–Piedmont basin. Trace elements and Nd isotopic compositions were examined to obtain information about: (1) mantle source and melting process and (2) melt–rock reactions during basalt ascent. Whole-rock analyses revealed that the Balagne basalts are slightly enriched in LREE, Nb, and Ta with respect to the Bracco–Levanto counterparts. These variations are paralleled by clinopyroxene chemistry. In particular, clinopyroxene from the Balagne basalts has higher CeN/SmN (0.4–0.3 vs. 0.2) and ZrN/YN (0.9–0.6 vs. 0.4–0.3) than that from the Bracco–Levanto basalts. The basalts from the two ophiolites have homogeneous initial Nd isotopic compositions (initial εNd from +?8.8 to +?8.6), within typical depleted mantle values, thereby excluding an origin from a lithospheric mantle source. These data also reject the involvement of contaminant crustal material, as associated continent-derived clastic sediments and radiolarian cherts have a highly radiogenic Nd isotopic fingerprint (εNd at the time of basalt formation?=???5.5 and ??5.2, respectively). We propose that the Bracco–Levanto and the Balagne basalts formed by partial melts of a depleted mantle source, most likely containing a garnet-bearing enriched component. The decoupling between incompatible elements and Nd isotopic signature can be explained either by different degrees of partial melting of a similar asthenospheric source or by reaction of the ascending melts with a lower crustal crystal mush. Both hypotheses are reconcilable with the formation of these two basalt sequences in different domains of a nascent oceanic basin.  相似文献

Eocene mafic volcanic rocks occurring in an E–W-trending, curvilinear belt along and north of the Izmir–Ankara–Erzincan suture zone (IAESZ) in northern Anatolia, Turkey, represent a discrete episode of magmatism following a series of early Cenozoic collisions between Eurasia and the Gondwana-derived microcontinents. Based on our new geochronological, geochemical, and isotope data from the Kartepe volcanic units in northwest Anatolia and the extant data in the literature, we evaluate the petrogenetic evolution, mantle melt sources, and possible causes of this Eocene volcanism. The Kartepe volcanic rocks and spatially associated dikes range from basalt and basaltic andesite to trachybasalt and basaltic trachyandesite in composition, and display calc-alkaline and transitional calc-alkaline to tholeiitic geochemical affinities. They are slightly to moderately enriched in large ion lithophile (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE) with respect to high-field strength elements (HFSE) and show negative Nb, Ta, and Ti anomalies reminiscent of subduction-influenced magmatic rocks. The analysed rocks have 87Sr/86Sr(i) values between 0.70570 and 0.70399, positive ?Nd values between 2.7 and 6.6, and Pb isotope ratios of 206Pb/204Pb(i) = 18.6–18.7, 207Pb/204Pb(i) = 15.6–15.7, and 208Pb/204Pb(i) = 38.7–39.1. The 40Ar/39Ar cooling ages of 52.7 ± 0.5 and 41.7 ± 0.3 Ma obtained from basaltic andesite and basalt samples indicate middle to late Eocene timing of this volcanic episode in northwest Anatolia. Calculated two-stage Nd depleted mantle model (TDM) ages of the Eocene mafic lavas range from 0.6 to 0.3 Ga, falling between the TDM ages of the K-enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle of the Sakarya Continent (1.0–0.9 Ga) to the north, and the young depleted mantle beneath central Western Anatolia (0.4–0.25 Ga) to the south. These geochemical and isotopic features collectively point to the interaction of melts derived from a sublithospheric, MORB-like mantle and a subduction-metasomatized, subcontinental lithospheric mantle during the evolution of the Eocene mafic volcanism. We infer triggering of partial melting by asthenospheric upwelling beneath the suture zone in the absence of active subduction in the Northern Neotethys. The geochemical signature of the volcanic rocks changed from subduction- and collision-related to intra-plate affinities through time, indicating an increased asthenospheric melt input in the later stages of Eocene volcanism, accompanied by extensional deformation and rifting.  相似文献

The Cenozoic basalts with OIB-affinity in northern marginal region of the North China Craton are thought to experience minor even no crustal contamination during the magma evolution. The whole-rock Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopes are attributed to a two-component mixing between depleted and enriched mantle sources, while the major element variations are controlled by the fractional crystallization of olivine and clinopyroxene. However, in this study, the new Os isotopic data proposes an opposite model for the Cenozoic basalts in northern marginal region of the North China Craton. In this model, the Jining basalts were contaminated by the Archean mafic rocks during the magma storage and ascent. The crustal contamination process is supported by (1) the highly radiogenic Os isotopic compositions, and (2) the positive correlation between 187Os/188Os and 1/Os of the Jining basalts. By modeling the Os isotopic composition of the basalts, an incorporation of < 10% mafic granulites/amphibolites to the parental magma can successfully explain the initial values of highly radiogenic Os. In contrast, the unradiogenic and uniform Os isotopic compositions of the Chifeng basalts suggest negligible crustal contamination. Os isotopic data acts as an indicator of crustal contamination during magma evolution, providing us a novel insight into the evolution of the intra-continental OIB-like basalts worldwide.©2021 China Geology Editorial Office.  相似文献

Studies of accreted oceanic plateau sections provide crucial information on their structures, compositions, and origins. We investigate the petrogenesis of ultramafic–mafic rocks in the Tangjia–Sumdo greenstone belt of southeast Tibet using petrography, whole-rock geochemistry, and U-Pb zircon geochronology. These rocks are divided into four groups based on geochemical characteristics that include depleted and tholeiitic mafic rocks, transitional mafic rocks, enriched and alkaline mafic rocks, and picritic ultramafic rocks. Depleted and tholeiitic mafic rocks have the oldest crystallization ages (~272 Ma), followed by picritic ultramafic rocks (~270 Ma), transitional mafic rocks (267–254 Ma), and enriched and alkaline mafic rocks (252–250 Ma). Hafnium and neodymium isotope ratios of depleted and tholeiitic mafic rocks (εHf(t) = +13.1–+16.9; εNd(t) = +6.9–+7.1), transitional mafic rocks (εHf(t) = +1.8–+16.9; εNd(t) = +0.8–+5.5), enriched and alkaline mafic rocks (εHf(t) = +0.5–+5.4; εNd(t) = ?1.5 to +1.9) and picritic ultramafic rocks (εHf(t) = +14.9–+17.2; εNd(t) = +7.8–+9.0) are similar to those of N-MORB, E-MORB, OIB and depleted-type picritic mafic rocks in other oceanic plateaus, respectively. The geochemical characteristics of the depleted and tholeiitic mafic rocks suggest that they formed by partial melting of depleted spinel lherzolite in a mid-ocean ridge setting, whereas the picritic ultramafic rocks suggest a high degree of partial melting of depleted lherzolite in a hot mantle plume head. The transitional mafic rocks formed by partial melting of moderately enriched garnet lherzolite. The youngest rocks (enriched and alkaline mafic rocks) formed by partial melting of a more enriched garnet lherzolite (compared to transitional mafic rocks) at relatively low temperatures. We propose that the depleted and tholeiitic mafic rocks represent normal oceanic crust of the Sumdo Paleo-Tethys Ocean and the transitional mafic rocks, enriched and alkaline mafic rocks and picritic ultramafic rocks are the fragments of the oceanic plateau, which were related to middle–late Permian mantle plume activity in the Sumdo Paleo-Tethys Ocean. We further suggest that the majority of the Tangjia–Sumdo greenstone belt represents a middle–late Permian oceanic plateau that reflects a previously unrecognized middle–late Permian mantle plume.  相似文献

The 40Ar–39Ar dating reveals three episodes of basaltic volcanism in eastern Guangdong of SE China since the late Eocene (i.e., 35.5, ~20 and 6.6 Ma). The Miocene alkali olivine basalts (~20 and 6.6 Ma) have OIB-like trace element characteristics, which is coupled with low (87Sr/86Sr)i, high εNd(t), and high εHf(t). In contrast, the late Eocene basalts (35.5 Ma) have overall characteristics of “Island Arc” basalts with strong negative Ta–Nb–Ti anomalies in the primitive mantle-normalized multi-element diagram with high (87Sr/86Sr)i, negative εNd(t), and relatively low εHf(t). All basalts have unexpectedly high 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb, delineating a DUPAL signature in the sources. The late Eocene Arc-like basalts may reflect contributions of relict ancient metasomatized mantle lithosphere that melted as the result of extension-induced asthenospheric upwelling and heating, whereas the Miocene OIB-like basalts may represent partial melting of the asthenospheric mantle beneath the thickened lithosphere. We propose that the Cenozoic basaltic volcanism in eastern Guangdong records an overall lithospheric thickening process beneath SE China, that is, a continental rift system from its maximum extension in the late Eocene to its waning in the Miocene. This interpretation is consistent with the evolution of the South China Sea, whose origin is most consistent with the development of a passive continental margin. The seafloor spreading of the South China Sea during ~ 32–16 Ma may not result from the effect of the “Hainan” mantle plume, but rather played a positive role in allowing the mantle plume to express on the surface.  相似文献

Recent detrital zircon studies of metamorphosed and polydeformed rocks of the early Mesozoic Ayú Complex in southern Mexico suggest an allochthonous origin along the western Pangean margin. Bulk-rock geochemistry of the ca. 170–200 Ma ortho-amphibolites suggests a composition ranging from alkalic and transitional basalts to normalized mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB) tholeiites. Rare earth element (REE) patterns of alkaline basalts (Group I) are characterized by steep negative slopes, whereas transitional basalts (Group II) show moderate light REE (LREE) enrichment. Subalkalic Group III displays slight LREE enrichment and Group IV has relatively flat REE patterns with slight depletion in LREEs. Multiple trace element plots of Group III–IV amphibolites reveal strongly negative Nb–Ta anomalies caused by subduction zone contamination. Initial ?Nd values (t = 190 Ma) of the amphibolites range from +9.01 to –2.16. Alkalic basalts have negative ?Nd values, suggesting derivation from an older subcontinental mantle source (T DM = 877 and 791 Ma). Group II–IV amphibolites have positive ?Nd values ranging from +2.31 to +9.01, indicating a transition from an older to a relatively juvenile mantle source that is typical of a back-arc setting. The geochemistry of the metasedimentary rocks suggests derivation from an acid-arc source. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are characterized by enriched LREEs, flat HREE, and negative Eu anomalies. Sm–Nd systematics indicate that most samples were derived from cratonic basement and plot within the Oaxacan Complex envelope with ?Nd values (t = 195 Ma) ranging from –5.53 to –7.65. We interpret two samples with higher ?Nd values (–1.42 and +1.06) to reflect the additional influence of a more juvenile component. The amphibolites and metasedimentary rocks of the Ayú Complex document back-arc activity and are inferred to be correlative with various western Mexican Triassic–Jurassic mafic suites and the Potosí fan that formed along the western rifted margin of Pangea.  相似文献

The Mt. Erciyes stratovolcano was built up in an intraplate tectonic environment as a consequence of Eurasian and Afro-Arabian continental collision. However, the volcanic products generally exhibit a calc-alkaline character; minor amounts of tholeiitic basalts are also present. Tholeiitic basalts show high Fe2O3, MgO, CaO, low K2O, and depleted Ba, Nb, and especially Rb (2.3-5.97 ppm) contents, low 87Sr/86Sr (0.703344-0.703964), and high 143Nd/144Nd (0.512920-0.512780) isotopic ratios. These compositional features show that they were derived from a depleted asthenospheric mantle source, possibly a MORB-like source component. In contrast, calc-alkaline basaltic rocks exhibit relatively high large-ion-lithophile and high-field-strength elements, high 87Sr/86Sr (0.704591-0.70507) and low 143Nd/144Nd (0.51272-0.512394) isotopic ratios.

The bulk-rock chemistry of the tholeiitic basalts reflects the chemical composition of the extracted source component. Furthermore, trace-element concentrations may be calculated from an accepted mantle source component (starting composition) for different degrees of partial melting. These calculations also provide a sensitive approach to the origin of tholeiitic basalts. Modeled trace-element compositions of tholeiitic basalts are calculated from a primitive mantle composition. Calculated trace-element compositions imply that tholeiitic basalts are derived by minor fractional melting (1-1.5 %), in the absence of assimilation or deep-crustal melting. The calc-alkaline basalts were subsequently produced from initially tholeiitic basalts by the way of an AFC (assimilation-fractional crystallization) process, with a crustal assimilation of 10-15 %.

The geochemical data, partial melting, and AFC modeling all indicate that basaltic products have a complex evolutionary history involving partial melting from a MORB-like mantle source. The assimilation and fractional crystallization processes are considered as providing an example for the chemical evolution of basaltic products, from tholeiitic to calc-alkaline, in an intraplate environment.  相似文献

The Eastern Cordillera of the Colombian Andes represents an inverted Cretaceous basin where Cretaceous magmatism is characterized by rare mafic dykes and sills. We use 40Ar/39Ar, Sr–Nd–Pb isotopes, as well as major and trace elements analyses of Cretaceous intrusions from both flanks of the Eastern Cordillera in combination with structural data to document the complex evolution of the basin. Magmatism, which is diachronous and geochemically diverse, seems to be related to mantle melting beneath the most subsiding segments of each sub-basin during enhanced extensional tectonics. The mafic intrusions display two different compositional series: an alkaline one with OIB-like pattern and a tholeiitic one with MORB-like features. This indicates at least two diverse mantle sources. Trace-element patterns suggest that the intrusions were emplaced in an extensional setting. 40Ar/39Ar dating on primary plagioclase and hornblende provides plateau ages between ~136 and ~74 Ma.The geochemical and temporal diversities show that the emplacement of the magmas was tectonically controlled, each sub-basin reflecting an individual subsidence event.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Makran complex in southeast Iran provides a spectacular subduction-related accretionary complex to understand the mechanism of oceanic accretion and the evolution of subduction zones. In this paper, we present new major and trace element data as well as isotopic compositions of mafic volcanic blocks from the Makran ophiolitic mélange complex (OMC). Our aim is to assess the genesis of these rocks and discuss their implications on the evolution of Neotethys Ocean. These volcanic blocks are composed mainly of basalts with minor trachytes. The Makran lavas are occasionally interlayered with tuff layers. Zircons from these tuffs give U-Pb ages of 95 Ma, which is well in accordance with the reposted microfossil data for the interlayered pelagic limestones with pillow lavas. Makran basalts can be geochemically subdivided into four groups; normal to transitional MORB, enriched-MORB, Plume-type MORB and alkaline (-OIB-like) basalts. The OIB-like pillow lavas are represented by high values of Th/Tb (6.3–7.4) which are higher than other basalts (group 1 = 0.3–0.8; groups 2 = 0.7–1.6; group 3 = 1.58–1.36).143Nd/144Nd(t) ratios for basalts ranges from 0.51247 to 0.51292, whereas 87Sr/86Sr(t) isotopic composition of the OMC lavas varies from 0.704433 to 0.709466. The Pb isotopic composition of the lavas are quite high, ranging from 15.49–15.66 for 207Pb/204Pb(t), 18.09–19.12 for 206Pb/204Pb(t) and 37.80–39.23 for 208Pb/204Pb(t). The chemistry of these rocks suggests that they were formed most likely in an oceanic setting with clear plume-ridge interaction. These rocks can form from partial melting of a highly heterogeneous mantle source, which is extensively metasomatized with deep mantle OIB-type components. We suggest these rocks have been generated in an oceanic ridge with plume-ridge interaction, similar to the Iceland-Reykjanes Ridge, before being fragmented and accreted into the Makran accretionary complex.  相似文献

Mafic dykes of Almora region intrude the Precambrian crystalline rocks of Kumaun Lesser Himalaya. Mafic dykes exhibit fine grained margin and medium to coarse grained core, melanocratic, low to highly ferromagnetic (MS=0.85?38.58×10?3SI) in nature commonly showing subophitic to ophitic textures with ol-pl-cpx-hbl-bt-mt-ap-sp assemblage, and modally correspond to leucogabbro and olivinegabbro (sensu stricto). Olivine (Fo61-Fo33), clinopyroxene (Wo46-En42-Fs22 to Wo40-En36-Fs15) and plagioclase (An58-An12) have crystallized in the temperature range of ca1400–980°C at pressure <2 kbar in an olivine tholeiitic basalt parent. Low acmite (Napfu=0.033?0.025), (Mg#=0.64–0.82), Ti-Al contents of clinopyroxenes and their evolution along enstatite-ferrosilite join (i.e. Mg?Fe substitution) strongly suggest tholeiitic nature of mafic dyke melt with changing activities of alumina and silica. Clinopyroxene compositions of mafic dykes differ markedly as compared to those observed for adjoining Bhimtal volcanics but closely resemble to that crystallized in tholeiitic melts of Deccan province. Observed Cr vs Mg# variation, enriched LILE (Sr, Ba)-LREE and positive Eu-anomaly of the studied mafic dykes are indicative of fractional crystallization of olivine-clinopyroxene -plagioclase from a crustally-contaminated tholeiitic basalt magma derived from enriched mantle source. The mafic dykes of Almora are geochemically identical to mafic dykes of Nainital, but are unrelated to Precambrian mafic volcanic flow and dykes of NW Himalaya and dykes of Salma and Rajmahal regions.  相似文献

The Rhön area as part of the Central European Volcanic Province (CEVP) hosts an unusual suite of Tertiary 24-Ma old hornblende-bearing alkaline basalts that provide insights into melting and fractionation processes within the lithospheric mantle. These chemically primitive to slightly evolved and isotopically (Sr, Nd, Pb) depleted basalts have slightly lower Hf isotopic compositions than respective other CEVP basalts and Os isotope compositions more radiogenic than commonly observed for continental intraplate alkaline basalts. These highly radiogenic initial 187Os/188Os ratios (0.268–0.892) together with their respective Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic compositions are unlikely to result from crustal contamination alone, although a lack of Os data for lower crustal rocks from the area and limited data for CEVP basalts or mantle xenoliths preclude a detailed evaluation. Similarly, melting of the same metasomatized subcontinental lithospheric mantle as inferred for other CEVP basalts alone is also unlikely, based on only moderately radiogenic Os isotope compositions obtained for upper mantle xenoliths from elsewhere in the province. Another explanation for the combined Nd, Sr and Os isotope data is that the lavas gained their highly radiogenic Os isotope composition through a mantle “hybridization”, metasomatism process. This model involves a mafic lithospheric component, such as an intrusion of a sublithospheric primary alkaline melt or a melt derived from subducted oceanic material, sometime in the past into the lithospheric mantle where it metasomatized the ambient mantle. Later at 24 Ma, thermal perturbations during rifting forced the isotopically evolved parts of the mantle together with the peridotitic ambient mantle to melt. This yielded a package of melts with highly correlated Re/Os ratios and radiogenic Os isotope compositions. Subsequent movement through the crust may have further altered the Os isotope composition although this effect is probably minor for the majority of the samples based on radiogenic Nd and unradiogenic Sr isotope composition of the lavas. If the radiogenic Os isotope composition can be explained by a mantle-hybridization and metasomatism model, the isotopic compositions of the hornblende basalts can be satisfied by ca. 5–25% addition of the mafic lithospheric component to an asthenospheric alkaline magma. Although a lack of isotope data for all required endmembers make this model somewhat speculative, the results show that the Re–Os isotope system in continental basalts is able to distinguish between crustal contamination and derivation of continental alkaline lavas from isotopically evolved peridotitic lithosphere that was contaminated by mafic material in the past and later remelted during rifting. The Hf isotopic compositions are slightly less radiogenic than in other alkaline basalts from the province and indicate the derivation of the lavas from low Lu–Hf parts of the lithospheric mantle. The new Os and Hf isotope data constrain a new light of the nature of such metasomatizing agents, at least for these particular rocks, which represent within the particular volcanic complex the first product of the volcanism.  相似文献

We report new Os-Pb-Hf isotope data for a suite of alkaline to basaltic (nephelinites, basanites, olivine tholeiites to quartz-tholeiites) lavas from the Miocene Vogelsberg (Germany), the largest of the rift-related continental volcanic complexes of the Central European Volcanic Province (CEVP). 187Os/188Os in primitive (high-MgO) alkaline lavas show a much wider range than has been observed in alkaline basalts and peridotite xenoliths from elsewhere in the CEVP, from ratios similar to those in modern MORB and OIB (0.1260-0.1451; 58.9-168 ppt Os) to more radiogenic ratios (0.1908 and 0.2197; 27.6-15.1 ppt Os). Radiogenic Os is associated with high εHf and εNd, low 87Sr/86Sr and does not correlate with Mg or incompatible trace elements (e.g. Ce/Pb), suggesting the presence of a radiogenic endmember in the mantle rather than crustal contamination as the source of radiogenic Os. This contrasts with another high-Mg alkaline lava characterized by highly radiogenic 187Os/188Os (0.4344, 10.3 ppt Os), lower εHf and εNd, higher 87Sr/86Sr, and Pb isotope signatures than the other alkaline lavas with similar trace element composition suggestive of contamination with crustal material. Hafnium (εHf: +8.9 to +5.0) and Pb isotope compositions (206Pb/204Pb: 19.10-19.61; 207Pb/204Pb: 15.56-15.60) of the alkaline rocks fall within the range of enriched MORB and some OIB. The Vogelsberg tholeiites show even more diverse 187Os/188Os, ranging from 0.1487 in Os-rich olivine tholeiite (31.7 ppt) to ratios as high as 0.7526 in other olivine-tholeiites and in quartz-tholeiites with lower Os concentrations (10.3-2.0 ppt). Low-187Os/188Os tholeiites show Pb-Hf isotope ratios (206Pb/204Pb:18.81; 207Pb/204Pb: 15.61; εHf: +2.7) that are distinct from those in alkaline lavas with similar 187Os/188Os and originate from a different mantle source. By contrast, the combination of radiogenic Os and low 206Pb/204Pb and εHf in the other tholeiites probably reflects crustal contamination. The association at Vogelsberg of primitive alkaline and tholeiitic lavas with a range of MORB- to OIB-like Os-Pb-Hf-Nd-Sr isotopic characteristics requires at least two asthenospheric magma sources. This is consistent with trace element modelling which suggests that the alkaline and tholeiitic parent magmas represent mixtures of melts from garnet and spinel peridotite sources (both with amphibole), implying an origin of the magmas in the garnet peridotite-spinel peridotite transition zone, probably at the asthenosphere-lithosphere interface. We propose that uncontaminated Vogelsberg lavas originated in ‘metasomatized’ mantle, involving a 3-stage model: (1) early carbonatite metasomatism several 10-100 Ma before the melting event (2) deposition of low-degree asthenospheric melts from carbonated peridotite at the lithosphere-asthenosphere thermal boundary produces hydrous amphibole-bearing veins or patches, and (3) remobilization of this modified lithospheric mantle into other asthenospheric melts passing through the same area later. In keeping with ‘metasomatized’ mantle models for other continental basalt provinces, we envisage that stage (2) is short-lived (few Ma), thus producing a prominent lithospheric trace element signature without changing the asthenospheric isotopic signatures. Models of this type can explain the peculiar mix of lithospheric (prominent depletions of Rb and K) and asthenospheric (OIB-like high 187Os/188Os, 143Nd/144Nd and 176Hf/177Hf) signatures observed in the Vogelsberg and many other continental basalt suites.  相似文献

The geochemical and zircon geochronological (U-Pb, SHRIMP-II) study of Mesoarchean gabbros of the South Vygozersky and Kamennoozersky greenstone structures of Central Karelia made it possible to distinguish four gabbro types: (1) Fe–Ti gabbro, 2869 ± 12 Ma, (2) gabbro compositionally close to tholeiitic basalts, 2857 ± 7 Ma, (3) leucogbabbro, 2840 ± 5 Ma; and (4) melanogabbro, 2818 ± 14 Ma. From the early to late gabbros, the rocks are depleted in Ti, Fe, V, Y, Zr, Nb, Hf, REE and enriched in Mg, Ca, Cr, Ni. According to the systematics (Condie, 2005), the Nb/Y, Zr/Y, Zr/Nb ratios in the studied Late Archean gabbros are close to those of primitive mantle, while the gabbros in composition are similar to those of plumederived ocean-plateau basalts. Their magma sources were derived from different mantle reservoirs. The leucogabbro and melanogabbro with similar εNd = +4 were derived from a depleted mantle source (DM). The gabbro close in composition to tholeiitic basalts and having the elevated positive εNd (+4.9) was derived from a strongly depleted mantle source. Insignificant admixture of crustal material or lithospheric mantle is inferred in a source of the Fe–Ti gabbro (with lowest εNd = +2.1).  相似文献

As the lowest volcanics-bearing unit of the Neoproterozoic succession, the Beiyixi Formation is the key to understanding the early response to the breakup of the Roninia supercontinent in the Tarim Block. The SHRIMP analyses of zircons from the volcanic rocks at the bottom of the Beiyixi Formation yield a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 755 ± 15 Ma. This is interpreted as the eruption age of the Beiyixi volcanic rocks. The Beiyixi volcanic rocks consist of bimodal basalt and dacite-rhyolite with a SiO2 gap between 55% and 65%. The mafic rocks display negative ɛNd (755 Ma) values (−9.9 to −10.8), moderate enrichment in LILE and variable depletion in Nb, Ta and P, resembling those of the tholeiitic basalts in continental rift. Geochemical and Nd isotopic characteristics suggest that the mafic rocks were derived from partial melting of an enriched lithospheric mantle reservoir. The felsic rocks show negative ɛNd (755 Ma) values (−7.9 to −9.2), negative Nb, Ta, P and Ti anomalies, very high LaN/YbN (62–92) ratios and LILE abundances, and may be generated by melting of eclogites or garnet amphibolites in the lower crust, as a result of basalt emplacement into continental crust during continental rifting. The age of 755 ± 15 Ma indicates that the Beiyixi glaciation took place later than 755 Ma and it could be correlated with the Chang’an glaciation in the Yangtze Block and the Sturtian–Rapitan glaciation in other Rodinia Blocks. The geochemical characteristics of the Beiyixi volcanic rocks resemble those of the rift-related magmatism in other Rodinia Blocks, suggesting that the Beiyixi volcanism was a part of global magmatism during the breakup of Rodinia supercontinent. The age and geochemical features of the Beiyixi volcanic rocks also reveal that the mantle plume activity spread to the northwestern margin of the Rodinia supercontinent and probably resulted in the breakup between Australia and Tarim Blocks.  相似文献

The late Permian Emeishan large igneous province(ELIP) covers ~0.3 x 106 km2 of the western margin of the Yangtze Block and Tibetan Plateau with displaced, correlative units in northern Vietnam(Song Da zone). The ELIP is of particular interest because it contains numerous world-class base metal deposits and is contemporaneous with the late Capitanian(~260 Ma) mass extinction. The flood basalts are the signature feature of the ELIP but there are also ultramafic and silicic volcanic rocks and layered maficultramafic and silicic plutonic rocks exposed. The ELIP is divided into three nearly concentric zones(i.e.inner,middle and outer) which correspond to progressively thicker crust from the inner to the outer zone. The eruptive age of the ELIP is constrained by geological, paleomagnetic and geochronological evidence to an interval of 3 Ma.The presence of picritic rocks and thick piles of flood basalts testifies to high temperature thermal regime however there is uncertainty as to whether these magmas were derived from the subcontinental lithospheric mantle or sub-lithospheric mantle(i.e.asthenosphere or mantle plume) sources or both. The range of Sr(I_(Sr) = 0.7040-0.7132),Nd(ε_(Nd)(t) ≈-14 to +8),Pb(~(206)Pb/~(204)Pb_1≈ 17.9-20.6) and Os(γ_(Os) =-5 to +11) isotope values of the ultramafic and mafic rocks does not permit a conclusive answer to ultimate source origin of the primitive rocks but it is clear that some rocks were affected by crustal contamination and the presence of near-depleted isotope compositions suggests that there is a sub-lithospheric mantle component in the system. The silicic rocks are derived by basaltic magmas/rocks through fractional crystallization or partial melting, crustal melting or by interactions between mafic and crustal melts. The formation of the Fe-Ti-V oxide-ore deposits is probably due to a combination of fractional crystallization of Ti-rich basalt and fluxing of C02-rich fluids whereas the Ni-Cu-(PGE) deposits are related to crystallization and crustal contamination of mafic or ultramafic magmas with subsequent segregation of a sulphide-rich portion. The ELIP is considered to be a mantle plume-derived LIP however the primary evidence for such a model is less convincing(e.g.uplift and geochemistry) and is far more complicated than previously suggested but is likely to be derived from a relatively short-lived,plume-like upwelling of mantle-derived magmas. The emplacement of the ELIP may have adversely affected the short-term environmental conditions and contributed to the decline in biota during the late Capitanian.  相似文献

The mechanism and process of lithospheric thinning beneath the North China Craton (NCC) are still debated. A key criterion in distinguishing among the proposed mechanisms is whether associated continental basalts were derived from the thinning lithospheric mantle or upwelling asthenosphere. Herein, we investigate the possible mechanisms of lithospheric thinning based on a systematic Re–Os isotopic study of Mesozoic to Cenozoic basalts from the NCC. Our whole-rock Re–Os isotopic results indicate that the Mesozoic basalts generally have high Re and Os concentrations that vary widely from 97.2 to 839.4 ppt and 74.4 to 519.6 ppt, respectively. They have high initial 187Os/188Os ratios ranging from 0.1513 to 0.3805, with corresponding variable γOs(t) values (+20 to +202). In contrast, the Re–Os concentrations and radiogenic Os isotope compositions of the Cenozoic basalts are typically lower than those of the Mesozoic basalts. The lowest initial 187Os/188Os ratios of the Cenozoic basalts are 0.1465 and 0.1479, with corresponding γOs(t) values of +15 and +16, which are within the range of ocean island basalts. These new Re–Os isotopic results, combined with the findings of previous studies, indicate that the Mesozoic basalts were a hybrid product of the melting of pyroxenite and peridotite in ancient lithospheric mantle beneath the NCC. The Cenozoic basalts were derived mainly from upwelling asthenosphere mixed with small amounts of lithospheric materials. The marked differences in geochemistry between the Mesozoic and Cenozoic basalts suggest a greatly reduced involvement of lithospheric mantle as the magma source from the Mesozoic to the Cenozoic. The subsequent lithospheric thinning of the NCC and replacement by upwelling asthenospheric mantle resulted in a change to asthenosphere-derived Cenozoic basalts.  相似文献

The Early Palaeozoic East Krkonoše Complex (EKC) situated in the central West Sudetes, NE Bohemian Massif, is a volcano‐sedimentary suite containing abundant mafic and felsic volcanics metamorphosed to greenschist facies. The trace element distribution patterns and Nd isotope signatures (ENd500 = + 3.1 to + 6.6) of the metabasites (metabasalts) indicate that they may be related to a rising mantle diapir associated with intracontinental rifting. At the early stage, limited melting of an upwelling asthenosphere produced alkali basalts and enriched tholeiites which compositionally resemble oceanic island basalts. A later stage of rifting with larger degrees of melting at shallower depths generated tholeiitic basalts with E‐MORB to N‐MORB characteristics. The values of (87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.706 and ENd500 = − 5 ±1 of the porphyroids (metarhyolites) as well as the lack of rocks with intermediate compositions suggest that the felsic rocks were formed by a partial melting event of continental crust triggered by mantle melts. The geochemistry of the EKC bimodal metavolcanics and their association with abundant terrigenous metasediments suggest that the felsic–mafic volcanic suite was generated during intracontinental rifting. This process, widespread in Western and Central Europe during the Early Palaeozoic, is evidence of large‐scale fragmentation of the northern margin of the Gondwana supercontinent. The Jurassic–Early Cretaceous Yilashan mafic–ultramafic complex is located in the middle part of the Bangong–Nujiang suture zone, central Tibet. It features a mantle sequence composed of peridotites and a crustal sequence composed of cumulate peridotites and gabbros that are intruded by diabases with some basalts. This article presents new whole-rock geochemical and geochronological data for peridotites, gabbros, diabases and basalts to revisit the petrogenesis and tectonic setting of the Yilashan mafic–ultramafic complex. Zircon laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) U–Pb ages of three diabase samples are 169.6 ± 3.3 Ma, 132.5 ± 2.5 Ma, and 133.6 ± 4.9 Ma, respectively. These ages together with previous studies indicate that the Yilashan mafic–ultramafic complex probably formed during the Jurassic–Early Cretaceous. The peridotites exhibit nearly U-shaped REE patterns and are distinct from abyssal peridotites. The diabase and basalt samples show arc features with selective enrichment in light rare earth elements (LREE) and large ion lithophile elements (LILEs; e.g. Rb, U, and Sr) and depletion in high field strength elements (HFSEs; e.g. Nb, Ta, and Ti). The gabbro samples display cumulate features with selective enrichment in LILEs (e.g. Rb, Ba, and Sr) but depletion in LREEs and HFSEs (e.g. Nb, Zr, and Ti). Combing the positive εNd(t) values (+6.1 to +10.0) and negative zircon εHf(t) values (–16.5 to –11.7 and –13.6 to –0.4) with older Hf model ages for the mafic rocks, these signatures suggest that the Yilashan mafic and ultramafic rocks likely originated from an ancient lithospheric mantle source with the addition of asthenospheric mantle materials and subducted fluids coupled with limited crustal contamination in a continental arc setting as a result of the southward subduction of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethys Ocean beneath the Lhasa terrane during the Jurassic–Early Cretaceous.  相似文献

The Hongshishan mafic–ultramafic intrusion (SIMS zircon U–Pb age 286.4 ± 2.8 Ma) consists of dunite, clinopyroxene peridotite, troctolite, and gabbro. Major elements display systematic correlations. Trace elements have identical distribution patterns, including flat rare-earth element (REE) patterns with positive Eu anomalies and enrichments in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) but depletions in Nb and Ta, indicating fractional crystallization as a key factor in magmatic evolution. Petrologic and geochemical variations in drill core samples demonstrate that minor assimilation and progressive magma injections were closely associated with Ni–Cu mineralization. Mass balance estimates and Sr–Nd isotopes reveal that the Hongshishan parental magmas were high-Mg and low-Ti tholeiitic basalts and were derived from a lithospheric mantle source that had been modified by subducted slab metasomatism before partial melting.

Southward subduction of the Palaeo-Tianshan–Junggar Ocean is further constrained by a compilation of inferred, subduction-induced modifications of mantle sources in mafic–ultramafic intrusions distributed in the eastern Tianshan–Beishan area. Integrating the regional positive ?Nd(t) granites, high-Mg and low-Ti basaltic magmas (mafic–ultramafic intrusions), and slightly later high-Ti basalts in NW China suggests that their petrogenesis could be attributed to Permian mantle plume activities.  相似文献
