The analysis of hard X-ray INTEGRAL observations (2003–2008) of superaccreting Galactic microquasar SS433 at precessional phases of the source with the maximum disc opening angle is carried out. It is found that the shape and width of the primary X-ray eclipse are strongly variable, suggesting additional absorption in dense stellar wind and gas outflows from the optical A7I component and the wind–wind collision region. The independence of the observed hard X-ray spectrum on the accretion disc precessional phase suggests that hard X-ray emission (20–100 keV) is formed in an extended, hot, quasi-isothermal corona, probably heated by interaction of relativistic jet with inhomogeneous wind outflow from the precessing supercritical accretion disc. A joint modelling of X-ray eclipsing and precessional hard X-ray variability of SS433 revealed by INTEGRAL by a geometrical model suggests the binary mass ratio   q = mx / m v ≃  0.25–0.5. The absolute minimum of joint orbital and precessional  χ2  residuals is reached at   q ≃ 0.3  . The found binary mass ratio range allows us to explain the substantial precessional variability of the minimum brightness at the middle of the primary optical eclipse. For the mass function of the optical star   f v = 0.268 M  as derived from Hillwig & Gies data, the obtained value of   q ≃ 0.3  yields the masses of the components   mx ≃ 5.3 M, m v ≃ 17.7 M  , confirming the black hole nature of the compact object in SS433.  相似文献

We present XMM–Newton /EPIC spectra for the Laor et al. sample of Palomar Green (PG) quasars. We find that a power law provides a reasonable fit to the 2–5 keV region of the spectra. Excess soft X-ray emission below 2 keV is present for all objects, with the exception of those known to contain a warm absorber. However, a single power law is a poor fit to the 0.3–10.0 keV spectrum and instead we find that a simple model, consisting of a broken power law (plus an iron line), provides a reasonable fit in most cases. The equivalent width of the emission line is constrained in just 12 objects but with low (<2σ) significance in most cases. For the sources whose spectra are well fitted by the broken-power-law model, we find that various optical and X-ray line and continuum parameters are well correlated; in particular, the power-law photon index is well correlated with the FWHM of the Hβ line and the photon indices of the low- and high-energy components of the broken power law are well correlated with each other. These results suggest that the 0.3–10 keV X-ray emission shares a common (presumably non-thermal) origin, as opposed to suggestions that the soft excess is directly produced by thermal disc emission or via an additional spectral component. We present XMM–Newton Optical Monitor (OM) data, which we combine with the X-ray spectra so as to produce broad-band spectral energy distributions (SEDs), free from uncertainties due to long-term variability in non-simultaneous data. Fitting these optical–UV spectra with a Comptonized disc model indicates that the soft X-ray excess is independent of the accretion disc, confirming our interpretation of the tight correlation between the hard and soft X-ray spectra.  相似文献

The spectra of disc accreting neutron stars generally show complex curvature, and individual components from the disc, boundary layer and neutron star surface cannot be uniquely identified. Here we show that much of the confusion over the spectral form derives from inadequate approximations for Comptonization and for the iron line. There is an intrinsic low-energy cut-off in Comptonized spectra at the seed photon energy. It is very important to model this correctly in neutron star systems as these have expected seed photon temperatures (from either the neutron star surface, inner disc or self-absorbed cyclotron) of ≈1 keV, clearly within the observed X-ray energy band. There is also reflected continuum emission which must accompany the observed iron line, which distorts the higher energy spectrum. We illustrate these points by a reanalysis of the Ginga spectra of Cyg X-2 at all points along its Z track, and show that the spectrum can be well fitted by models in which the low-energy spectrum is dominated by the disc, while the higher energy spectrum is dominated by Comptonized emission from the boundary layer, together with its reflected spectrum from a relativistically smeared, ionized disc.  相似文献

We discuss the effects of a Comptonizing corona on the appearance of the reflection components, and in particular of the reflection hump, in the X-ray spectra of accreting black holes. Indeed, in the framework of a thermal corona model, we expect that some (or even all, depending on the coronal covering factor) of the reflection features should cross the hot plasma, and thus suffer Compton scattering, before being observed. We have studied in detail the dependence of these effects on the physical (i.e. temperature and optical depth) and geometrical (i.e. inclination angle) parameters of the corona, concentrating on the slab geometry. Owing to the smoothing and shifting towards high energies of the Comptonized reflection hump, the main effects on the emerging spectra appear above 100 keV. We have also investigated the importance of such effects on the interpretation of the results obtained with the standard fitting procedures. We found that fitting Comptonization models, taking into account Comptonized reflection, by the usual cut-off power law + unComptonized reflection model may lead to an underestimation of the reflection normalization and an overestimation of the high-energy cut-off. We discuss and illustrate the importance of these effects by analysing recent observational results, such as those of the galaxy NGC 4258. We also find that the Comptonizing corona can produce and/or emphasize correlations between the reflection feature characteristics (like the iron line equivalent width or the covering fraction) and the X-ray spectral index, similar to those recently reported in the literature. We also underline the importance of these effects when dealing with accurate spectral fitting of the X-ray background.  相似文献

We report on the properties of a 99.3-d periodic modulation in the X-ray transient XTE J1716−389. We associate this source with the transient KS J1716−389, first detected by the Mir /Kvant module in 1994. The spectral characteristics of XTE J1716−389, a high intrinsic absorption column, strong emission features and a power-law spectrum, make it very similar to the class of highly absorbed X-ray binaries detected by INTEGRAL . We associate the 99.3-d periodic behaviour with the geometrical obscuration that results from a precessing circumbinary disc that is moving in and out of the field of view, comparable to what has been proposed for SS 433. We therefore propose that XTE J1716−389 is a high-mass X-ray binary with a supergiant companion that is similar not only to SS 433, but also to the new class of highly obscured X-ray binaries, suggesting that SS 433 is a member of much wider population that is now being detected by INTEGRAL .  相似文献

Within the magnetar scenario, the 'twisted magnetosphere' model appears very promising in explaining the persistent X-ray emission from soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs). In the first two papers of the series, we have presented a 3D Monte Carlo code for solving radiation transport as soft, thermal photons emitted by the star surface are resonantly upscattered by the magnetospheric particles. A spectral model archive has been generated and implemented in xspec . Here, we report on the systematic application of our spectral model to different XMM–Newton and INTEGRAL observations of SGRs and AXPs. We find that the synthetic spectra provide a very good fit to the data for the nearly all the source (and source states) we have analysed.  相似文献

We model the optical to X-ray continuum spectrum of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy RE J1034+396. We show that the flat optical spectrum is consistent with emission from an irradiated accretion disc. The X-ray emission can be modelled with a disc blackbody and a Comptonized component. The temperature at the inner edge of the disc     Using this constraint, we show that the flat optical spectrum is consistent with emission from the irradiatively heated outer part of the accretion disc. We constrain the outer radius of the optically thick disc     and the inner radius of the irradiation-dominated region     . Our optical and X-ray spectral fits indicate a mass     , and do not rule out a low (i.e. face-on) inclination angle for the system.  相似文献

SS433, located at the center of the supernova remnant W50, is a close proximity binary system consisting of a compact star and a normal star. Jets of material are directed outwards from the vicinity of the compact star symmetrically to the east and west. Non-thermal hard X-ray emission is detected from lobes lying on both sides. Shock accelerated electrons are expected to generate VHE gamma rays through the inverse-Compton process in the lobes. Observations of the western X-ray lobe region of SS433/W50 system have been performed to detect VHE gamma rays using the 10 m CANGAROO-II telescope in August and September, 2001, and July and September, 2002. The total observation times are 85.2 h for ON source, and 80.8 h for OFF source data. No significant excess of VHE gamma rays has been found at three regions of the western X-ray lobe of SS433/W50 system. We have derived 99% confidence level upper limits to the fluxes of gamma rays and have set constraints on the strengths of the magnetic fields assuming the synchrotron/inverse-Compton model for the wide energy range of photon spectrum from radio to TeV. The derived lower limits are G for the center of the brightest X-ray emission region and G for the far end from SS433 in the western X-ray lobe. In addition, we suggest that the spot-like X-ray emission may provide a major contribution to the hardest X-ray spectrum in the lobe.  相似文献

A significant new development in the study of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) has been the recent discovery by INTEGRAL and RXTE of flat, hard X-ray components in three AXPs. These non-thermal spectral components differ dramatically from the steeper quasi-power-law tails seen in the classic X-ray band in these sources. A prime candidate mechanism for generating this new component is resonant, magnetic Compton upscattering. This process is very efficient in the strong magnetic fields present in AXPs. Here an introductory exploration of an inner magnetospheric model for upscattering of surface thermal X-rays in AXPs is offered, preparing the way for an investigation of whether such resonant upscattering can explain the 20–150 keV spectra seen by INTEGRAL. Characteristically flat emission spectra produced by non-thermal electrons injected in the emission region are computed using collision integrals. A relativistic QED scattering cross section is employed so that Klein–Nishina reductions are influential in determining the photon spectra and fluxes. Spectral results depend strongly on the magnetospheric locale of the scattering and the observer’s orientation, which couple directly to the angular distributions of photons sampled.  相似文献

Echo mapping makes use of the intrinsic variaibility of the continuum source in active galactic nuclei to map out the distribution and kinematics of line‐emitting gas from its light travel time‐delayed response to continuum changes. Echo mapping experiments have yielded sizes for the broad line‐emitting region in about three dozen AGNs. The dynamics of the line‐emitting gas seem to be dominated by the gravity of the central black hole, enabling measurement of the black‐hole masses in AGNs. We discuss requirements for future echo‐mapping experiments that will yield the high‐quality velocity–delay maps of the broad‐line region that are needed to determine its physical nature. We investigate how the presence of a non-thermal tail beyond a Maxwellian electron distribution affects the synchrotron process as well as Comptonization in plasmas with parameters typical for accretion flows on to black holes. We find that the presence of the tail can significantly increase the net (after accounting for self-absorption) cyclo-synchrotron emission of the plasma, which then provides seed photons for Compton upscattering. Thus, the luminosity in the thermally Comptonized spectrum is enhanced as well. The importance of these effects increases with both increasing Eddington ratio and black hole mass. The enhancement of the Comptonized synchrotron luminosity can be as large as ∼103 and ∼105 for stellar and supermassive black holes, respectively, when the energy content in the non-thermal tail is 1 per cent.
The presence of the tail only weakly hardens the thermal Comptonization spectrum but it leads to the formation of a high-energy tail beyond the thermal cut-off, which two effects are independent of the nature of the seed photons. Since observations of high-energy tails in Comptonization spectra can constrain the non-thermal tails in the electron distribution and thus the Comptonized synchrotron luminosity, they provide upper limits on the strength of magnetic fields in accretion flows. In particular, the measurement of an MeV tail in the hard state of Cyg X-1 by McConnell et al. implies the magnetic field strength in this source to be at most an order of magnitude below equipartition.  相似文献

We present integral field spectroscopy of the double imaged quasar HE1104‐1805 taken with the optical fiber system INTEGRAL‐WYFFOS at theWHT telescope. From the spectra of the two components we have measured the continuum and line emission ratios, finding an offset between them that can be related to microlensing. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We present an exhaustive analysis of five broad-band observations of GRS 1915+105 in two variability states, χ and ω, observed simultaneously by the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) and High-Energy X-ray Timing Experiment (HEXTE) detectors aboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer , and the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) detector aboard the Compton Gamma-ray Observatory . We find all the spectra well fitted by Comptonization of disc blackbody photons, with very strong evidence for the presence of a non-thermal electron component in the Comptonizing plasma. Both the energy and the power spectra in the χ state are typical of the very high/intermediate state of black hole binaries. The spectrum of the ω state is characterized by a strong blackbody component Comptonized by thermal electrons and a weak non-thermal tail. We then calculate rms spectra (fractional variability as functions of energy) for the PCA data. We accurately model the rms spectra by coherent superposition of variability in the components implied by the spectral fits, namely a less variable blackbody and more variable Comptonization. The latter dominates at high energies, resulting in a flattening of the rms at high energies in most of the data. This is also the case for the spectra of the quasi-periodic oscillations present in the χ state. Then, some of our data require a radial dependence of the rms of the disc blackbody. We also study the distance to the source, and find   d ≃ 11 kpc  as the most likely value, contrary to a recent claim of a much lower value.  相似文献

In the synchrotron radiation model, the polarization property depends on both the configuration of the magnetic field and the geometry of the visible emitting region. Some peculiar behaviours in the X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed with Swift , such as energetic flares and a plateau followed by a sharp drop, might be highly linearly polarized because the outflows powering these behaviours may be dominated by Poynting flux. The breakdown of the symmetry of the visible emitting region may also be well hidden in the peculiar X-ray data and may give rise to interesting polarization signatures. In this paper, we focus on the polarization accompanying the very early sharp decline of GRB X-ray afterglows. We show that strong polarization evolution is possible in both the high latitude emission model and the dying central engine model, which are used to interpret this sharp X-ray decline. It is thus not easy to efficiently probe the physical origin of the very early X-ray sharp decline with future polarimetry. Strong polarization evolution is also possible in the decline phase of X-ray flares and in the shallow decline phase of X-ray light curves characterized by chromatic X-ray versus optical breaks. A detector such as the X-ray Telescope (XRT), but with polarization capability, on board a satellite like Swift would be suitable for testing our predictions.  相似文献

We report the results of a two-month campaign conducted with the Chandra X-ray observatory to monitor the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 5204 X-1. This was composed of a 50-ks observation, followed by ten 5-ks follow-ups spaced initially at ∼3, then at ∼10-d intervals. The ULX flux is seen to vary by factors ∼5 on time-scales of a few days, but no strong variability is seen on time-scales shorter than an hour. There is no evidence for a periodic signal in the X-ray data. An examination of the X-ray colour variations over the period of the campaign shows the ULX emission consistently becomes spectrally harder as its flux increases. The X-ray spectrum from the 50-ks observation can be fitted by a number of disparate spectral models, all of which describe a smooth continuum with, unusually for a ULX, a broad emission feature evident at 0.96 keV. The spectral variations, both within the 50-ks observation and over the course of the whole campaign, can then be explained solely by variations in the continuum component. In the context of an optically thick corona model (as found in other recent results for ULXs) the spectral variations can be explained by the heating of the corona as the luminosity of the ULX increases, consistent with the behaviour of at least one Galactic black hole system in the strongly Comptonized very high state. We find no new evidence supporting the presence of an intermediate-mass black hole in this ULX.  相似文献

The fluctuating-accretion model of Lyubarskii and its extension by Kotov, Churazov & Gilfanov seek to explain the spectral-timing properties of the X-ray variability of accreting black holes in terms of inward-propagating mass accretion fluctuations produced at a broad range of radii. The fluctuations modulate the X-ray emitting region as they move inwards and can produce temporal-frequency-dependent lags between energy bands, and energy-dependent power spectral densities (PSDs) as a result of the different emissivity profiles, which may be expected at different X-ray energies. Here, we use a simple numerical implementation to investigate in detail the X-ray spectral-timing properties of the model and their relation to several physically interesting parameters, namely the emissivity profile in different energy bands, the geometrical thickness and viscosity parameter of the accretion flow, the strength of damping on the fluctuations and the temporal coherence (measured by the 'quality factor', Q ) of the fluctuations introduced at each radius. We find that a geometrically thick flow with large viscosity parameter is favoured, and we confirm that the predicted lags are quite robust to changes in the emissivity profile and physical parameters of the accretion flow, which may help to explain the similarity of the lag spectra in the low/hard and high/soft states of Cyg X-1. We also demonstrate the model regime where the light curves in different energy bands are highly spectrally coherent. We compare model predictions directly to X-ray data from the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 and the black hole X-ray binary (BHXRB) Cyg X-1 in its high/soft state, and we show that this general scheme can reproduce simultaneously the time lags and energy-dependence of the PSD.  相似文献
