This work presents model calculations of the diurnal airglow emissions from the OH Meinel bands and the O2 IR atmospheric band in the neutral atmosphere of Mars. A time-dependent photochemical model of the lower atmosphere below 80 km has been developed for this purpose. Special emphasis is placed on the nightglow emissions because of their potential to characterize the atomic oxygen profile in the 50-80 km region. Unlike on Earth, the OH Meinel emission rates are very sensitive to the details of the vibrational relaxation pathway. In the sudden death and collisional cascade limits, the maximum OH Meinel column intensities for emissions originating from a fixed upper vibrational level are calculated to be about 300 R, for transitions v=9→v?8, and 15,000 R, for transitions v=1→v=0, respectively. During the daytime the 1.27 μm emission from O2(), primarily formed from ozone photodissociation, is of the order of MegaRayleighs (MR). Due to the long radiative lifetime of O2(), a luminescent remnant of the dayglow extends to the dark side for about two hours. At night, excited molecular oxygen is expected to be produced through the three body reaction O + O + CO2. The column emission of this nighttime component of the airglow is estimated to amount to 25 kR. Both nightglow emissions, from the OH Meinel bands and the O2 IR atmospheric band, overlap in the 50-80 km region. Photodissociation of CO2 in the upper atmosphere and the subsequent transport of the atomic oxygen produced to the emitting layer are revealed as key factors in the nightglow emissions from these systems. The Mars 5 upper constraint for the product [H][O3] is revised on the basis of more recent values for the emission probabilities and collisional deactivation coefficients.  相似文献

Measurements of the twilight enhancement of airglow emission from O+(2P) near 7325 Å reveal major changes which accompany geomagnetic activity, no significant distance between evening and morning and an increase in brightness paralleling the approach to solar maximum. The principal source for O+(2P) is direct photoionization from O(3P) but at low solar activity there appears to be a contribution from another source in early twilight which may be local photoelectron ionization into O+(2P). The geomagnetic and solar effects appear to reflect changes in the O and N2 density in the thermosphere; ground based twilight measurements of O+ emissions thus provide a simple means for monitoring thermospheric structure from 300 km to ~ 500 km at solar minimum and to ~600 km at solar maximum.  相似文献

The ground-level zenith radiance of the atmospheric emission at λ1.27 μm was radiometrically observed to increase by a factor of approximately two with the onset of an IBC III+ auroral breakup above Chatanika, Alaska, on 10 March 1975. Time-resolved optical spectra clearly show that the slow component of the enhancement is associated with the (0,0) band of the infrared atmospheric system of O2. Photometric and incoherent scatter radar data are used to define the energy-deposition profile and the absolute energy flux for the event. The magnitude of the O2λ1.27-μm enhancement compares favourably with the predictions of an auroral excitation model which includes only secondary-electron excitation of molecular oxygen in the O2(a1Δg) source term.  相似文献

Electron impact excitation of vibrational levels in the ground electronic state and seven excited electronic states in O2 have been simulated for an International Brightness Coefficient-Category 2+ (IBC II+) night-time aurora, in order to predict O2 excited state number densities and volume emission rates (VERs). These number densities and VERs are determined as a function of altitude (in the range 80-350 km) in the present study. Recent electron impact excitation cross-sections for O2 were combined with appropriate altitude dependent IBC II+ auroral secondary electron distributions and the vibrational populations of the eight O2 electronic states were determined under conditions of statistical equilibrium. Pre-dissociation, atmospheric chemistry involving atomic and molecular oxygen, radiative decay and quenching of excited states were included in this study. This model predicts relatively high number densities for the metastable electronic states and could represent a significant source of stored energy in O2* for subsequent thermospheric chemical reactions. Particular attention is directed towards the emission intensities of the infrared (IR) atmospheric (1.27 μm), Atmospheric (0.76 μm) and the atomic oxygen 1S1D transition (5577 Å) lines and the role of electron-driven processes in their origin. Aircraft, rocket and satellite observations have shown both the IR atmospheric and Atmospheric lines are dramatically enhanced under auroral conditions and, where possible, we compare our results to these measurements. Our calculated 5577 Å intensity is found to be in good agreement with values independently measured for a medium strength IBC II+ aurora.  相似文献

Recent laboratory measurements of the deactivation rate constants for O(1S) have suggested that the dominant production mechanism for the green line in the nightglow is a two-step process. A similar mechanism involving energy transfer from an excited state of molecular oxygen is considered as a potential source of the OI (5577 Å) emission in the aurora. It is shown that the mechanism, O2 + e → O21 + e O21 + O → O2 + O(1S), is consistent with auroral observations; the intermediate excited state has been tentatively identified as the O2(c1?u) state. For the proposed energy transfer mechanism to be the primary source of the auroral green line, the peak electron impact cross-section for O21 production must be approximately 2 × 10?17 cm2.  相似文献

It is proposed that energy transfer from excited O2 contributes to the production of O(1S) in aurora. An analysis is presented of the OI5577 Å emission in an IBC II+ aurora between 90 and 130 km. The volume emission rate of the emission at these altitudes is consistent with the production rate of O(1S) by energy transfer to O(3P) from N2 in the A3Σ2+ state and O2 in the A3Σu+, C3Δc1Σu? states, the N2A state being populated by direct electron impact excitation and BA cascade and the excited O2 states by direct excitation. Above the peak emission altitude (~105 km), energy transfer from N2A is the predominant production mechanism for O(1S). Below it, the contribution from quenching of the O2 states becomes significant.  相似文献

We have studied the fine structure of the active H2O supermaser emission region in Orion KL with an angular resolution of 0.1 mas. We found central features suggestive of a bipolar outflow, bullets, and an envelope which correspond to the earliest stage of low-mass star formation. The ejector is a bright compact source ≤0.05 AU in size with a brightness temperature T b ?1017 K. The highly collimated bipolar outflow ~30 has a velocity v ej ?10 km s?1, a rotation period of ~0.5 yr, a precession period of ~10 yr, and a precession angle of ~33°. Precession gives rise to a jet in the shape of a conical helix. The envelope amplifies the radio emission from the components by about three orders of magnitude at a velocity v=7.65 km s?1.  相似文献

The superfine structure of the active region in Orion KL has been investigated in the H2O maser line at two epochs, December 23, 1998, and April 24, 1999, with an angular resolution as high as 0.01 mas. A bright central source, a bipolar outflow ejector with two nozzles spaced 0.008 mas apart, has been identified. The impact of the ejected flows causes precession of the rotation axis and gives rise to a jet structure in the shape of diverging helixes of opposite signs. The longitudinal velocities of the flows differ by 0.12 km s?1. The flow emission at the exit from the nozzles is linearly polarized and oriented at an angle of 22° relative to the rotation axis or parallel to the flow velocities. Their brightness temperature exceeds T b > 1018 K. The width of the emission line profiles is 0.43 km s?1, their relative shift is ±0.06 km s?1, and the orientations of the polarization planes differ by 45°, which determines the extraordinary rotation of the polarization plane, 25°/km s?1.  相似文献

A very long series of photographic observations of the comet Hale-Bopp has been made during January–April 1997 at the double astrograph (400/2000) of the Main Astronomical Observatory (Kyiv, Ukraine). Some of the cometary photos were obtained with two wide-band filter combinations. One of these combinations isolates C2 emission, another — the nearby dust continuum. The images were digitized by means of AMDPH-XY machine and then calibrated following the standard procedure. After subtraction of the dust continuum the distribution of surface brightness in the C2 emission coma of comet Hale-Bopp was studied. We found an asymmetric brightness distribution both pre- and post-perihelion. On 21.77 April 1997 a secondary brightness peak is found at the distance of 1.03 × 105 km from the nucleus. It is possible that this peak is related to the extended source of the C2 molecules. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The results of JHKLM photometry for Nova Delphini 2013 obtained in the first sixty days after its outburst are analyzed. Analysis of the energy distribution in a wide spectral range (0.36–5 µm) has shown that the source mimics the emission of normal supergiants of spectral types B5 and A0 for two dates near its optical brightness maximum, August 15.94 UT and August 16.86 UT, respectively. The distance to the nova has been estimated to be D ≈ 3 kpc. For these dates, the following parameters have been estimated: the source’s bolometric fluxes ~9 × 10?7 and ~7.2 × 10?7 erg s?1 cm?2, luminosities L ≈ 2.5 × 105 L and ≈2 × 105 L , and radii R ≈ 6.3 × 1012 and ≈1.2 × 1013 cm. The nova’s expansion velocity near its optical brightness maximum was ~700 km s?1. An infrared (IR) excess associated with the formation of a dust shell is shown to have appeared in the energy distribution one month after the optical brightness maximum. The parameters of the dust component have been estimated for two dates of observations, JD2456557.28 (September 21, 2013) and JD2456577.18 (October 11, 2013). For these dates, the dust shell parameters have been estimated: the color temperatures ≈1500 and ≈1200 K, radii ≈6.5 × 1013 and 1.7 × 1014 cm, luminosities ~4 × 103 L and ~1.1 × 104 L , and the dust mass ~1.6 × 1024 and ~1025 g. The total mass of the material ejected in twenty days (gas + dust) could reach ~1.1 × 10?6 M . The rate of dust supply to the nova shell was ~8 × 10?8 M yr?1. The expansion velocity of the dust shell was about 600 km s?1.  相似文献

The radio emission of a selected number of solar active regions has been investigated with high angular resolution at two frequencies: 10 and 17 GHz. By comparing the results of the two observations the following conclusions can be drawn:
  1. The brightness temperature distribution of an active region is often composed of very bright cores of small dimension (angular extent θ?20″) imbedded in extended halos of lower brightness.
  2. The radio emission of such structures as well as the degree of polarization can be explained with a thermal process. The halos can originate by pure thermal bremsstrahlung while in the case of the very bright cores found at 10 GHz (brightness temperature T b?1–9 × 106K) the emission at the harmonics of the gyrofrequency is needed.

Volume emission profiles of the O2(b1Σg+X3Σgt-)(O-O) Atmospheric Band and the O(1S-1D) green line are used together with coordinated measurements of the atomic oxygen concentrations to test the hypothesis that both emissions are excited by Barth type mechanisms. By considering O2(b1Σg+) to be produced from an excited O2 precursor, with O2 as transfer agent, and O(1S) to be formed from a similar precursor with atomic oxygen as the transfer agent, precursor quenching rates are obtained as a function of altitude. These quenching profiles can be well resolved into components corresponding to collisional deactivation by O(3P) and O2 (or N2), and support the suggestion that Barth type mechanisms are involved. Minimum efficiencies for the production of the two precursors in oxygen atom recombination and ratios for the quenching of each by O(3P) and O2 (or N2) are deduced. Differences in the quenching coefficients for the two precursors are discussed.  相似文献

We develop here theoretical relations between fluctuations of airglow brightness, fluctuations of temperature as revealed by airglow, and the atmospheric gravity waves that are believed to cause these fluctuations. We note and account for differences between our relations and those obtained by Krassovsky (1972, Ann. Geophys. 28, 739) and Weinstock (1978, J. geophys. Res. 83, 5175), correcting both of the latter in the process. We explicitly repudiate the need for a nonlinear treatment of O2(1Σg) emissions as it was asserted by Weinstock, one aspect of the nonlinear treatment he gave, and the conclusions he drew from that treatment, including, inter alia, the conclusion that temperature fluctuations carry more meaning as a diagnostic than do brightness fluctuations. Instead, we note the dependence of both types of fluctuation on variable gravity-wave parameters, which dependence can be applied to the study of gravity waves via airglow or of airglow via gravity waves. As a first step, we note the ability of the present analysis to account for certain observations of OH and O2(1Σg) emissions that have been, until now, inadequately or incorrectly explained, and we stress the importance of the proper measurement of parameters such as wave frequency and propagation speed if our own tentative explanations are to be put to the test and further progress is to be made.  相似文献

We observed Saturn at far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths during the Earth's March 1980 passage through the plane of Saturn's rings. Comparison with earlier spectroscopic observations by D. B. Ward [Icarus32, 437–442 (1977)], obtained at a time when the tilt angle of the rings was 21.8°, permits separation of the disk and ring contributions to the flux observed in this wavelength range. We present two main results: (1) The observed emission of the disk between 60 and 180 μm corresponds to a brightness temperature of 104 ± 2°K; (2) the brightness temperature of the rings drops approximately 20°K between 60 and 80 μm. Our data, in conjunction with the data obtained by other observers between 1 μm and 1 mm, permit us to derive an improved estimate for the total Saturnian surface brightness of (4.84 ± 0.32) × 10?4W cm?2 corresponding to an effective temperature of 96.1 ± 1.6°K. The ratio of radiated to incident power, PR/PI, is (1.46 ± 0.08)/(1 - A), where A is the Bond albedo. For A = 0.337 ± 0.029, PR/PI = 2.20 ± 0.15 and Saturn's intrinsic luminosity is LS = (2.9 ± 0.5) × 10?10L.  相似文献

A new spectrum of Jupiter from 700 to 1600 cm?1 was obtained with an interferometric experiment using the 91.5 cm telescope of the NASA Airborne Infrared Observatory. The spectral resolution is 10 cm?1 and the signal-to-noise ratio is 30 at 900 cm?1. NH3 absorption lines are observed between 820 and 1020 cm?1. The 1306 cm?1ν4CH4 band strongly appears in emission at a temperature of at least 145° K. The Jovian brightness temperature between 1400 and 1600 cm?1, according to our measurement, is lower than 170° K.  相似文献

In this study a method is outlined which is capable of giving neutral temperatures and height changes in the aurora when the molecular emissions originate from the E-region.Absolute spectrometric measurements of N2+ 1NG and O2+ 1NG bands and the auroral green line are performed in a nightside aurora. Rotational temperatures and band intensities are deduced by a least-squares fit of synthetic spectra to observations. There is a close correlation between the variations in rotational temperatures and the relative intensity ratio of N2+ 1NG(0,3) and O2+ 1NG(1,0) bands. The change in the relative intensity ratio is similar to the intensity variation predicted by the changing N2 and O2 densities from 120 to 150 km, obtained from the MSIS 83 model atmosphere, and the derived neutral temperature variations are consistent with a similar change in emission height of the aurora. Therefore the changing temperature is most likely due to a changing emission height of the aurora, and no local heating can be inferred.  相似文献

The results of recent laboratory experiments suggest that the reaction N+ + O2 → NO+ + O(1S) is the principal source of O(1S) in aurora. A negligible time delay between auroral ionization and O(1S) production is associated with this indirect process, which is a necessary condition for a viable mechanism. The 5577A?3914A? volume emission rate ratio associated with this production source remains constant with altitude. The problems encountered by the currently accepted source of O(1S), the reaction of N2(A3Σ) molecules with atomic oxygen are explored, and the contributions of this and other reactions to the auroral green line emission are reevaluated.  相似文献

We discuss the infrared (IR) (1.25–5 µm) photometry of eight planetary nebulae performed in 1999–2006. For all of the nebulae under study, we have firmly established IR brightness and color variations on time scales shorter than one year and up to 6–8 years. The greatest IR brightness variations were observed in IC 2149, IC 4997, and NGC 7662. Their J magnitudes varied within 0 . m 2–0 . m 25. In the remaining objects, the J magnitude variations did not exceed 0 . m 15. All of the planetary nebulae under study exhibited IR color variations. Based on the IR photometry, we have classified the central regions of the planetary nebula NGC 1514 and of the northern part of NGC 7635 seen through a 12″ aperture as a B(3–7) main-sequence star (NGC 1514) and a ~O9.5 upper-main-sequence star (NGC 7635). The nebulae IC 4997 and NGC 7027 exhibited an excess emission (with respect to the emission from a hot source) at λ > 2.5 µm.  相似文献

During the recent apparition of Comet Halley in 1985-86 a transient ionic event in the form of a blob of H2 O+ emission was recorded in thecoma at ~ 0h UT on 1986 March 13. Observations were carried out using a special IHW filter for H2 O+ emission at 7000 å/175 å, a 35 cm telescope, a Fabry-Perot interferometer and an image intensifier camera from Gurushikhar, Mt Abu. (24?39’N,72? 47’E). A Fabry-Perot inter-ferogram in Ha taken a few minutes later at the same location reveals strong hydrogen emission (Hα) associated with the blob. The velocity field in the blob is structured with relative velocities upto ~ 35km s?1. The event is interpreted as arising due to the sector boundary crossing of the interplanetary magnetic field by the comet  相似文献
