Lacustrine limestone samples from sedimentary pan deposits at Rooidam, near Kimberley, South Africa, that contain late Acheulian (Fauresmith) artifacts have been dated by 230Th234U and 231Pa235U methods. Results indicate a minimum age of about 200,000 yr B.P. for the terminal Acheulian in the interior of South Africa.  相似文献

Speleothem from West Virginia, ranging in age from 2000 to 200,000 yr B.P. contains uranium with U234U238 ratios significantly greater than unity. This ratio varies from one speleothem to another, as does average U content. Initial ratios, corrected for age, are remarkably constant for a given speleothem. By contrast, U234U238 ratios in seepage waters vary significantly from month to month at a given drip site, and their average values differ from that of the speleothem which they are depositing. This discrepancy is attributed either to long-term averaging-out of fluctuations, or fractional precipitation on the speleothem of a chemical species of uranium with a more constant ratio. Constancy of initial U234U238 ratios from Th230U234. datable portions of speleothems should permit U234U238-dating of older portions of the same speleothem, back to about 106 yr B.P., with estimated precision of ±5 per cent.  相似文献

14C ages supplemented by 230Th234U determinations have been obtained for calcareous deposits on Koror, Babelthuap, Auluptagel, and Adorius Islands in the Palau Group, West Caroline Islands. Test borings for a bridge between Koror and Babelthuap reveal shoreface terraces consisting largely of bioclastic sand, but resembling fringing reefs. The base of the shoreface terraces dates to between 7000 and 8000 14C yr B.P. and the upper surfaces are slightly younger than 4000 yr B.P. Spacing of the subsurface isochrons indicates that the rate of sedimentation increased up-section on Koror terrace and decreased up-section on Babelthuap terrace. The average rate of deposition in the terraces was 0.5 cm/yr. Isochrons in the Babelthuap shoreface terrace are 7 m higher than those in the Koror terrace. If deposition was sufficient to keep the surfaces of the terraces at low tide level, then the Babelthuap side was essentially stable and the Koror side was uplifted between about 8000 and 6300 yr ago, and then subsided until 4000 yr ago; since then there has been about 2 m of uplift. “Top hat” microatolls on Koror terrace indicate that relative sea level has dropped about 30 cm in the past 75 yr. In the absence of good evidence for changes of level in water ponded in a moat, it is likely that the microatolls indicate uplift of the terrace. On the other hand, if tectonic activity was minimal, then differences in the two terraces are due to differences in sedimentation with the Koror side of the channel being substantially subtidal between about 7000 and 5000 yr B.P. Taking the composite eustatic sea-level curve of Hawaii and elsewhere as a reference standard, it is deduced that Auluptagel Island has risen 0.8 m in the last 2900 yr, and Adorius Island has risen approximately 8 m in the last 5000–6000 yr.  相似文献

The Sayif travertines and lacustrine limestones cropping out in the northern Arava Valley, a region of extreme aridity, have been dated by the 230Th234U disequilibrium method. The consistency between the stratigraphic position and the apparent ages at each of the sampling sites strongly supports the reliability of the ages. Most of the ages fall within two clusters that are coincident with ages representative of oceanic oxygen-isotope stages 5 and 7. The colder intervening stage 6 was not a period of substantial travertine formation. During the warmer global episodes of isotopic stages 5 and 7 the arid south of Israel apparently was considerably wetter than at present.  相似文献

Emerged coral reef terraces on the Huon Peninsula in New Guinea were reported in a reconnaissance dating study by Veeh and Chappell 1970. Age definition achieved was not good for several important terraces, and we report here a series of new 230Th234U dates, which further clarify the history of late Quaternary eustatic sea level fluctuations. More than 20 reef complexes are present, ranging well beyond 250,000 yr old: we are concerned with the seven lowest complexes. Major reef-building episodes dated by 30Th234U are reef complex I at 5–9 ka (kilo anno = 1000 yr), r.c. IIIb at 41 ka (four dates), r.c. IV at 61 ka (four dates), r.c. V at 85 ka (two dates), r.c. VI at 107 ka (two dates), and r.c. VII at 118–142 ka. Complex II was previously dated by 14C at 29 ka: this age has not yet been confirmed, and may be only a lower limit. The reef crests were built during or immediately before intervals of sea level maxima, when rates of rising sea level and tectonic uplift briefly coincided. The culmination of each reef-building episode was only a few thousand years in duration, and multiple dates from the same reef complex generally group within the statistical errors of the individual dates.Several methods can be used to estimate the altitude of each sea level maximum relative to present sea level. The least complicated is to calculate mean tectonic uplift rate for each profile of the terraces, and use the mean rate to calculate the tectonic displacement of each dated reef complex on that profile. The difference between the present altitude of a reef complex and its calculated tectonic uplift gives the paleosea level at the time the reef grew. We estimate uplift rates for six surveyed sections by calibrating against published paleosea level estimates from Barbados and elsewhere, viz 125 ka, paleosea at +6 m; 103 ka, ?15 m; 82 ka, ?13 m. For each section the individual uplift rates for reefs V, VI, and VIIb are within 5% of their section means. Using the mean rates. paleosea level estimates for reef crests II, IIIB, and IV are made for each section. Consistency of estimates between sections is good, giving ?28 m for the 60 ka paleosea level, around ?38 m for the 42 ka level and ?41 m for the 28 ka level (if the age is older the paleosea level would be lower. Using the mean uplift rates, the 82 ka and 103 ka paleosea levels are also estimated for each section: all individual estimates are plotted graphically, and a sea level curve drawn. The reef stratigraphy indicates sea level lowerings between each dated reef crest: the crests probably represent the interstadials of the Wisconsin (Würm, Weichsel) Glaciation, and intervening lower levels correspond to stadials. Since the last time of eustatic sea level higher than the present (about 125 ka), five sea level maxima occurred at roughly 20-ka intervals, none being as high as the present.  相似文献

The reef-crest coral Acropora palmata from late Pleistocene reefs on Barbados has recorded the same global variations in oxygen isotopes as planktonic and benthonic foraminifera. Although the record of oxygen isotopes in Acropora palmata is discontinuous, it offers several advantages over the isotope records from deep-sea sediments: (1) the coral grows at water depths of less than 5 m; (2) the samples are unmixed; (3) specimens may be sampled from various elevations of paleo-sea level; and (4) aragonitic corals are suitable for 230Th234U and HeU dating techniques. The latter advantage means that direct dating of the marine oxygen isotope record is possible. Oxygen isotope stage 5e corresponds to Barbados III, dated at 125,000 ± 6000 yr BP. Petrographic and geochemical evidence from five boreholes drilled into the south coast of Barbados indicates a major eustatic lowering (greater than 100 m below present sea level) occurred between 180,000 and 125,000 yr BP. The age and isotopic data suggest correlation of this change in sea level to Emiliani's oxygen isotope stage 6. Acropora palmata deposited at various elevations of sea level during oxygen isotope stage 6 vary by 0.11 ‰ δ18O for each 10 m of change in sea level. We further hypothesize a minimum drop of 2°C in the average temperature occurred during the regressive phase of oxygen isotope stage 6. These data indicate that temperature lowering of surface water near Barbados lagged behind a major glacial buildup during this time period. Using the δ18O vs sea level calibration herein derived, we estimate the relative height of sea stands responsible for Barbados coral reef terraces in the time range 80,000 to 220,000 yr BP.  相似文献

A linear relation is derived for the secular evolution of 206Pb204Pb, 207Pb204Pb and 208Pb204Pb ratios, that permits tests to be made for open system evolution on each system independently. Application of the method to conformable ore bodies of various geological age indicates that the available data do not demand an open system evolution for the last 3.8 b.y. 238U204Pb and 232Th204Pb of 9.66 ± 0.15 and 37.65 ± 1.14 respectively fit best the data for this time interval.A single stage evolution since 4.5 b.y. is unlikely, however, and the major events of continent formation postdate the Earth accretion by at least 400 m.y. The larger scatter of 207Pb204Pb data about the evolution line relative to the other isotopic ratios is also interpreted as resulting from a series of continental differentiation events taking place at 3.85 ± 0.15 b.y.  相似文献

Uplift rates of the Loyalty Islands (S.W. Pacific) have been determined from 230Th234U dating of raised coral terraces standing 2 to 7.5 m above sea level. The ages of the terraces on Ouvéa and Lifou correspond closely to previously documented periods of high sea levels at 120,000 and 180,000 yr BP. A +2-m terrace on Beautemps-Beaupré is considered to be beyond the range of the dating technique. The uplift rates of the various islands show a decrease toward the west. This lends support to the hypothesis of a lithospheric bulge of the leading edge of the Australian plate prior to its subduction at the level of the New Hebrides trench.  相似文献

Hydrothermal submarine metalliferous deposits, common in areas of the ocean floor with high heat flow, contain generally about 10 ppm U as an order of magnitude. The U234U238 ratio is in the majority of cases close to that of seawater; only in a few cases is it anomalously high. Anomalous U234U238 ratios are coupled with low U concentrations. These data are explained by a model where thermal water (essentially heated seawater) in its sub-bottom circulation often is unable to leach U from the basaltic oceanic crust; in fact, these thermal waters may in some cases lose U. When leaching of U from the basalt does take place, probably during shallow stages of the sub-bottom circulation, the resulting anomalous U234U238 ratio can be preserved in the hydrothermal deposit only if mixing with ‘seawater’ U is prevented.  相似文献

The timing of eustatic sea level fluctuations over the vertical range + 15 to ?11 m has been deduced from 230Th234U dating of Bermudan corals and speleothems. On this tectonically stable carbonate island, interglacial periods are characterized by platform submergence, development of patch reefs, and the deposition of littoral and eolian carbonates, whereas glacial periods are times of platform emergence, carbonate diagenesis, soil development, and the deposition of speleothems in caves extending below present sea level. Interglacial periods are observed at about 200,000, 130,000 to 90,000, and 10,000 yr BP to present. The sea level history of the last interglacial period (130,000 to 90,000 yr BP) is complex, consisting of at least two short, distinct episodes of high sea stand (at 125,000 and 97,000 yr BP) superimposed on a longer period of general platform submergence. The sea level data derived from this study are compatible with those from other stable areas such as the Bahamas, but in addition suggest that eustatic sea level changes can be rapid, on the order of 5 to 10 m/1000 yr.  相似文献

The U-Th-Pb isotope systematics of the eucrite “Juvinas” have been studied in whole rock fragments as well as in plagioclases and pyroxenes. The results show that this monomict breccia crystallized with a very high UPb initial ratio at T = 4.539 ± 0.004 AE ago. There is evidence for a less radiogenic Pb component (206Pb204Pb = 13.0; 207Pb204Pb = 13.5; 208Pb204Pb = 32.71) interpreted as “exotic lead” induced by a meteoritical impact at the surface of the Juvinas parent body, 1.92 ± 0.06 AE ago.  相似文献

230Th-238U disequilibrium systematics reveal several important characteristics of the mantle source regions and petrogenesis of volcanic rocks in the presumed hot spots of Hawaii, Marion Island (Prince Edward hot spot), and Samoa. The (230Th232Th) activity ratios of lavas from these three hot spots (1.06 ± 0.07, 1.04 ± 0.08, and 0.81 ± 0.06, respectively) imply that the source regions are each nearly homogeneous with ThU weight ratios of 2.9, 3.0, and 3.8. For Marion Island and Mauna Kea, Hawaii, negligible secular variation occurs in the (230Th232Th) initial ratios. This supports other evidence for very short transfer time between source and surface. Significant residence time at depth prior to eruption cannot be ruled out for the Samoan lavas we have studied; however, the data for one of these flows deviate from the proposed (230Th232Th)-87Sr86Sr correlation (Condomineset al., 1981a) in the opposite sense from that expected for such residence. If it is assumed that the measured (230Th232Th) ratios of the young lavas reflect ThU in their mantle sources, then the observed variations among these three hot spots, combined with those reported by other workers for Iceland, the Azores and Tristan de Cunha, suggest that these sources are characterized by ThU ratios ranging from values similar to that of MORB source (~2.5) to values similar to those of bulk earth (~3.8). Mixing of different proportions of depleted and enriched mantle may be responsible for the observed range.  相似文献

The 227Th230Th dating method is described in detail and its usefulness investigated by comparing ages of sixteen Pleistocene carbonates (mainly cave deposits) with those determined by the 231Pa235U and 230Th234U methods. The 227Th230Th ages are found to be critically dependent on corrections for decay of 227Th prior to alpha counting and ingrowth of daughter isotopes of 232Th derived from clastic detritus. Of nineteen sets of ages determined for the sixteen samples, good agreement is found for only seven sets. Differences are attributed to low U content of some samples and the possibility of excess 227Th in the calcite of samples younger than ~50 ky, possibly due to the coprecipitation of 231Pa during formation. Calculated “negative” 227Th230Th ages may be a direct result of this process and the fact that, unlike the other methods, the activity ratio is non-zero at zero age. Nevertheless, the 227Th230Th is found to be a useful alternative dating technique for carbonates which are between ~50 and 300 ky, because no spiking is required. It also serves as a check for partial concordancy with ages dated by the other methods.  相似文献

234Th produced from 238U within sea water was found to be in radioactive disequilibrium with respect to its progenitor nuclide 238U in the surface layer of the ocean. The median value for 234Th238U activity ratio is 0.80 in the upper 200 m layer. A box-model calculation gives a removal residence time of thorium of about 0.38 yr. This suggests that 234Th is scavenged from the surface layer by the uptake of thorium by biota.  相似文献

Approximately one thousand drilled wells were investigated for their natural radioactivity. The determinations of 238U, 234U, 226Ra and 222Rn from 310 samples showed a high state of radioactive disequilibrium between the members of the uranium series present in water. The 238U226Ra activity ratio usually fell in the range 1–20 and the 238U222Rn activity ratio in the range 1–20 × 10?4, the highest activity ratios being from samples with an elevated uranium content. The 234U238U activity ratio varied between 0.76 and 4.67, the most frequent values showing a 60% excess of 234U in the samples. Most of the 234U238U activity ratios near unity were found in samples with a high uranium content. Several drilled wells with anomalously high uranium contents were found in southern Finland. The average 226Ra and 222Rn contents of these wells were not exceptionally high, which suggests high mobility of uranium in groundwater from the areas involved.  相似文献

The concentrations of 238Pu, 239 + 240Pu, 241Am and 137Cs were determined in rain samples collected at Monaco in the course of 1978–1979. Based on these data, the annual deliveries of these radionuclides to the Mediterranean by rain are computed to be 0.18 ± 0.01 pCim?2 for 238Pu, 8.1 ± 0.1 pCim?2 for 239 + 240Pu, 0.58 ± 0.02 pCim?2 for 241Am and 351 ± 4 pCim?2 for 137Cs.Comparing the delivery data with the mixed layer inventories of 239 + 240Pu and 241Am in the Mediterranean, the upper limits of the mean residence time of these radionuclides in the mixed layer were estimated to be 12.3 yr for 239 + 240pu and 2.9 yr for 241Am. These values are consistent with the conclusion deduced from the vertical distribution pattern of these transuranic elements in the Mediterranean.Based on delivery values, the annual activity ratios for 238pu239 + 240Pu, 241Am239 + 240Pu and 239 + 240pu137Cs are found to be 0,022, 0.072 and 0.023 respectively. The 238pu239 + 240pu and 239 + 240Pu137Cs activity ratios vary within relatively narrow ranges with time, while a much wider variation was observed for the 241Am239 + 240Pu activity ratio. The cause of the wider variation of the 241Am239 + 240Pu ratio may be related to the difference in the mean age of fallout brought down in different seasons.  相似文献

Two very different sets of 244Pu238U ratios have been reported for early solar system materials. One group of samples yields high (0.015–0.016) ratios (Podosek, 1970a, 1972; Drozd et al., 1977) and calculations based on another group of analyses yield low ratios (~0.004) (Marti et al., 1977). Recently measured partition coefficients for Pu and Sm are used to evaluate the data of Marti et al. and sol244Pu238U ratios from other sources are also considered. A low sol244Pu238U ratio (~0.005) is favored, and some implications of this low ratio to galactic nucleosynthesis and meteorite age dating are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The long-lived nuclide 92Nb together with 91Nb and 94Nb were produced from Mo by neutron irradiation. The activities of the nuclides were determined by γ spectroscopy and the atomic abundances were determined by mass spectrometry. Intercomparison of 92Nb and 94Nb activities and abundances yielded a value for half-life (92Nb) = (3.3 ± 0.5) × 107 yr based on a value for half-life (94Nb) = 2.0 × 104 yr. The same value was obtained within errors from absolute counting data and dilution analysis.  相似文献
