The solubility of hydroxyl in coesite was investigated in multianvil experiments performed at 1200 °C over the nominal pressure range 5–10 GPa, at an f O2 close to the Ni-NiO buffer. The starting material for each experiment was a cylinder of pure silica glass plus talc, which dehydrates at high P and T to provide a source of water and hydrogen (plus enstatite and excess SiO2). Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of the recovered coesite crystals show five sharp bands at 3606, 3573, 3523, 3459, and 3299 cm−1, indicative of structurally bonded hydrogen (hydroxyl). The concentration of hydrogen increases with pressure from 285 H/106 Si (at 5 GPa) to 1415 H/106 Si (at 10 GPa). Assuming a model of incorporation by (4H)Si defects, the data are fit well by the equation C OH=Af 2 H2<\INF>Oexp(−PΔV/RT), with A=4.38 H/106 Si/GPa, and ΔV=20.6 × 10−6 m3 mol−1. An alternative model entailing association of hydrogen with cation substitution can also be used to fit the data. These results show that the solubility of hydroxyl in coesite is approximately an order of magnitude lower than in olivines and pyroxenes, but comparable to that in pyropic garnet. However, FTIR investigations on a variety of ultrahigh pressure metamorphic rocks have failed in all cases to detect the presence of water or hydrogen in coesite, indicating either that it grew in dry environments or lost its hydrogen during partial transformation to quartz. On the other hand, micro-FTIR investigations of quartz crystals replacing coesite show that they contain varying amounts of H2O. These results support the hypothesis that preservation of coesite is not necessarily linked to fast exhumation rates but is crucially dependent on limited fluid infiltration during exhumation.  The incorporation of hydrogen (deuterium) into the coesite structure was investigated at pressures from 3.1 to 7.5 GPa and temperatures of 700, 800, and 1100 °C. Hydrogen could only be incorporated into the coesite structure at pressures greater 5.0 GPa and 1100 °C . No correlation between the concentration of trace elements such as Al and B and the hydrogen content was observed based on ion probe analysis (1335 ± 16 H ppm and 17 ± 1 Al ppm at 7.5 GPa, 1100 °C). The FTIR spectra show three relatively intense bands at 3575, 3516, and 3459 cm−11 to ν3, respectively) and two very weak bands at 3296 and 3210 cm−14 and ν5, respectively). The band at 3516 cm−1 is strongly asymmetric and can be resolved into two bands, 3528 (ν2a) and 3508 (ν2b) cm−1, with nearly identical areas. Polarized infrared absorption spectra of coesite single-crystal slabs, cut parallel to (0 1 0) and (1 0 0), were collected to locate the OH dipoles in the structure and to calibrate the IR spectroscopy for quantitative analysis of OH in coesite (ɛ i ,tot=190 000 ± 30 000 l mol−1 H2O cm−2). The polarized spectra revealed a strong pleochroism of the OH bands. High-pressure FTIR spectra at pressures up to 8 GPa were performed in a diamond-anvil cell to gain further insight into incorporation mechanism of OH in coesite. The peak positions of the ν1, ν2, and ν3 bands decrease linearly with pressure. The mode Grüneisen parameters for ν1, ν2, and ν3 are −0.074, −0.144 and −0.398, respectively. There is a linear increase of the pressure derivatives with band position which follows the trend proposed by Hofmeister et al. (1999). The full widths at half maximum (FWHM) of the ν1, ν2, and ν3 bands increase from 35, 21, and 28 cm−1 in the spectra at ambient conditions to 71, 68, and 105 in the 8 GPa spectra, respectively. On the basis of these results, a model for the incorporation of hydrogen in coesite was developed: the OH defects are introduced into the structure by the substitution Si4+(Si2)+4O2−= [4](Si2) + 4OH, which gives rise to four vibrations, ν1, ν2a, ν2b, and ν3. Because the OH(D)-bearing samples do contain traces of Al and B, the bands ν4 and ν5 may be coupled to Al and/or B substitution. Received: 19 December 2000 / Accepted: 23 April 2001  相似文献

Bond critical point properties of electron density distributions calculated for representative Si5O16 moieties of the structure of coesite are compared with those observed and calculated for the bulk crystal. The values calculated for the moieties agree with those observed to within ∼5%, on average, whereas those calculated for the crystal agree to within ∼10%. As the SiOSi angles increase and the SiO bonds shorten, there is a progressive build-up in the calculated electron density along the bonds. This is accompanied by an increase in both the curvatures of the electron density, both perpendicular and parallel to each bond, and the Laplacian of the electron density distribution at the bond critical points. The cross sections of the bonds at the critical points become more circular as the angle approaches 180o. Also, the bonded radius of the oxide anion decreases about twice as much as that of the Si cation as the SiO bond length decreases and the fraction of s-character of the bond is indicated to increase. A knowledge of electron density distributions is central to our understanding of the forces that govern the structure, properties, solid state reactions, surface reactions and phase transformations of minerals. The software (CRYSTAL95 and TOPOND) used in this study to calculate the bond critical properties of the electron density and Laplacian distributions is bound to promote a deeper understanding of crystal chemistry and properties. Polycrystalline Fe3C (cementite) was compressed in a neon pressure medium to 30.5 GPa at 300 K using diamond-anvil cell techniques. Angular dispersive X-ray diffraction of Fe3C was measured using monochromatic synchrotron radiation and imaging plates. No phase transition was observed up to the highest pressure studied. The pressure–volume data were fitted to a third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state. With V 0 constrained to a measured value of 155.28 Å3, the best fit yielded a 300-K isothermal bulk modulus K 0 = 174 ± 6 GPa, and its pressure derivative at constant temperature K 0 =(K 0 /P) T = 4.8±0.8.  相似文献

Variation of Raman spectra of both natural (F-bearing) and synthetic (F-free) chondrodite samples were studied up to 400 kbar at room temperature. Ambient Raman frequencies for the synthetic sample are in general lower than those for the natural one. This is correlated with a slight expansion of the volume of the synthetic sample due to substitution of OH for F. The frequencies of all Raman bands for both samples increase monotonically with increasing pressure. The positive pressure dependences in the O−H stretch frequencies for both F-free and F-bearing samples are contrary to those for other dense hydrous magnesium silicates. A mechanism involving both the hydrogen-hydrogen repulsion and hydrogen bondings is proposed to explain the abnormal behavior. The effects of substitution of F for OH on both the ambient and high-pressure Raman spectra of chondrodite are also discussed. Received: 19 February 1998 / Revised accepted: 26 June 1998  相似文献

Variations of Raman spectra of hydroxyl-clinohumite were studied up to ∼370 kbar at room temperature, and in the range 81–873 K at atmospheric pressure. With the exception of the symmetric OH-stretch bands, the Raman frequencies of all bands were observed to increase monotonically with increasing pressure, and decrease with increasing temperature. This behavior is in line with those observed for other humite members (norbergite and chondrodite) so far studied. The symmetric OH-stretching band shows a mode softening with increasing pressure, and splits into two bands at either high pressure or low temperature. In the quasihydrostatic experiment, the compression and decompression paths of one of the asymmetric OH-stretch bands form a hysteresis loop, but the same behavior was not observed in the nonhydrostatic experiment. These results indicate that the two kinds of OH groups in hydroxyl-clinohumite have nonequivalent movement paths on compression, and with one OH group experiencing a release of spatial hindrance during compression. This behavior appears to be modified by shear stress. The same complication of the OH groups was not observed in the temperature variation study. The pressure and temperature variations of the Raman frequencies for the various vibrations involving the SiO4 tetrahedra and MgO6 octahedra below ∼1000 cm−1 for clinohumite behave similarly to other hydrous magnesium silicates. On the basis of the relationship between isothermal bulk modulus and Raman data, it is suggested that the linear pressure dependences of vibrational frequencies of various Raman bands reported in the literature are inadequate.  High-pressure Raman investigations were carried out on a synthetic fluorapatite up to about 7 GPa to analyse the behaviour of the phosphate group's internal modes and of its lattice modes. The Raman frequencies of all modes increased with pressure and a trend toward reduced splitting was observed for the PO4-stretching modes [(ν3a(Ag) and ν3b(Ag); ν3a(E2g) and ν3b(E2g)] and the PO4 out-of-plane bending modes [ν4a(Ag) and ν4b(Ag)]. The pressure coefficients of phosphate modes ranged from 0.0047 to 0.0052 GPa−1 for ν3, from 0.0025 to 0.0044 GPa−1 for ν4, from 0.0056 to 0.0086 GPa−1 for ν2 and 0.0046 for ν1 GPa−1, while the pressure coefficients of lattice modes ranged from 0.0106 to 0.0278 GPa−1. The corresponding Grüneisen parameters varied from 0.437 to 0.474, 0.428, 0.232 to 0.409 and 0.521 to 0.800 for phosphate modes ν3, ν1, ν4, ν2, respectively, and from 0.99 to 2.59 for lattice modes. The vibrational behaviour was interpreted in view of the high-pressure structural refinement performed on the same crystal under the same experimental conditions. The reduced splitting may thus be linked to the reduced distortion of the environment around the phosphate tetrahedron rather than to the decrease of the tetrahedral distortion itself. Moreover, the amount of calcium polyhedral compression, which is about three times the compression of phosphate tetrahedra, may explain the different Grüneisen parameters.  Synthetic Zn-ferrite (ideally ZnFe2O4; mineral name: franklinite) was studied up to 37 GPa, by X-ray powder diffraction at ESRF (Grenoble, France), on the ID9 beamline; high pressure was achieved by means of a DAC. The P-V equation of state of franklinite was investigated using the Birch-Murnaghan function, and the elastic properties thus inferred [K0 = 166.4(±3.0) GPa K0  = 9.3(±0.6) K0  = −0.22 GPa−1] are compared with earlier determinations for MgAl-spinel and magnetite. The structural behaviour of Zn-ferrite as a function of pressure was studied by Rietveld refinements, and interpreted in the light of a phase transition from spinel to either CaTi2O4- or MnFe2O4-like structure; this transformation occurs above 24 GPa.  In situ synchrotron X-ray experiments in the system SnO2 were made at pressures of 4–29 GPa and temperatures of 300–1400 K using sintered diamond anvils in a 6–8 type high-pressure apparatus. Orthorhombic phase (α-PbO2 structure) underwent a transition to a cubic phase (Pa3ˉ structure) at 18 GPa. This transition was observed at significantly lower pressures in DAC experiments. We obtained the isothermal bulk modulus of cubic phase K 0 = 252(28) GPa and its pressure derivative K =3.5(2.2). The thermal expansion coefficient of cubic phase at 25 GPa up to 1300 K was determined from interpolation of the P-V-T data obtained, and is 1.7(±0.7) × 10−5 K−1 at 25 GPa.  The Raman spectra of synthetic α-Co2SiO4 and α-Ni2SiO4 olivines have been studied at room temperature and various pressures. All the Raman frequencies of the two olivines increase with increasing pressure, and most of the frequency–pressure plots obtained under both quasi- and nonhydrostatic conditions are nonlinear. It has been found that the average pressure derivative of Raman frequencies of the lattice modes in both Co- and Ni-olivines is smaller than that of the internal modes of SiO4, indicating that the distortion of SiO4 tetrahedra under static compression may be more severe than that of MO6 octahedra. In addition, four new Raman bands were observed in Ni-olivine under nonhydrostatic compression and above 30 GPa. This result suggests that a new phase of Ni-olivine should be formed at 30 GPa or amorphization may occur at still higher pressure. Received: 11 July 2000 / Accepted: 19 December 2000  相似文献

Raman spectra of diopside were collected from atmospheric pressure to 71 GPa. The pressure dependences of 22 modes were determined. Changes occurred in the spectra at three different pressures. First, at approximately 10 GPa, the two Raman modes at 356 and 875 cm−1 disappeared, while the mode at 324 cm−1 split into two modes, diverging at this pressure with significantly different pressure shifts; second, at approximately 15 GPa, a small (1 to 2 cm−1) drop in several of the frequencies was observed accompanied by changes in the pressure dependency of some of the modes; and third, above 55 GPa, the modes characteristic of chains of tetrahedrally coordinated silicon disappeared, while those for octahedrally coordinated silicon appeared. The first change at 10 GPa appears to be a C2/c to C2/c transition involving a change in the Ca coordination. The third change above 55 GPa appears to be a change in the silicon coordination. At 15 GPa, it is suggested that a change in compressional mechanism takes place. Received: 14 November 2000 / Accepted: 9 January 2002  相似文献

The compression of synthetic pyrope Mg3Al2 (SiO4)3, almandine Fe3Al2(SiO4)3, spessartine Mn3Al2 (SiO4)3 grossular Ca3Al2(SiO4)3 and andradite Ca3Fe2 (SiO4)3 was studied by loading the crystals together in a diamond anvil cell. The unit-cell parameters were determined as a function of pressure by X-ray diffraction up to 15 GPa using neon as a pressure transmitting medium. The unit-cell parameters of pyrope and almandine were measured up to 33 and 21 GPa, respectively, using helium as a pressure medium. The bulk moduli, K T 0, and their first pressure derivatives, K T 0 , were simultaneously determined for all five garnets by fitting the volume data to a third order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state. Both parameters can be further constrained through a comparison of volume compressions between pairs of garnets, giving for K T 0 and K T 0 171(2) GPa and 4.4(2) for pyrope, 185(3) GPa and 4.2(3) for almandine, 189(1) GPa and 4.2 for spessartine, 175(1) GPa and 4.4 for grossular and 157(1) GPa and 5.1 for andradite, where the K T 0 are fixed in the case of spessartine, grossular and andradite. Direct comparisons of the unit-cell volumes determined at high pressures between pairs of garnets reveal anomalous compression behavior for Mg2+ in the 8-fold coordinated triangular dodecahedron in pyrope. This agrees with previous studies concerning the compression behaviors of Mg2+ in 6-fold coordinated polyhedra at high pressures. The results show that simple bulk modulus–volume systematics are not obeyed by garnets. Received: 29 July 1998 / Revised, accepted: 7 April 1999  相似文献

The microtextures of stishovite and coesite in shocked non-porous lithic clasts from suevite of the Ries impact structure were studied in transmitted light and under the scanning electron microscope. Both high-pressure silica phases were identified in situ by laser-Raman spectroscopy. They formed from silica melt as well as by solid-state transformation. In weakly shocked rocks (stage I), fine-grained stishovite (≤1.8 μm) occurs in thin pseudotachylite veins of quartz-rich rocks, where it obviously nucleated from high-pressure frictional melts. Generally no stishovite was found in planar deformation features (PDFs) within grains of rock-forming quartz. The single exception is a highly shocked quartz grain, trapped between a pseudotachylite vein and a large ilmenite grain, in which stishovite occurs within two sets of lamellae. It is assumed that in this case the small stishovite grains formed by the interplay of conductive heating and shock reverberation. In strongly shocked rocks (stages Ib–III, above ∼30 GPa), grains of former quartz typically contain abundant and variably sized stishovite (<6 μm) embedded within a dense amorphous silica phase in the interstices between PDFs. The formation of transparent diaplectic glass in adjacent domains results from the breakdown of stishovite and the transformation of the dense amorphous phase and PDFs to diaplectic glass in the solid state. Coesite formed during unloading occurs in two textural varieties. Granular micrometre-sized coesite occurs embedded in silica melt glass along former fractures and grain boundaries. These former high-pressure melt pockets are surrounded by diaplectic glass or by domains consisting of microcrystalline coesite and earlier formed stishovite. The latter is mostly replaced by amorphous silica.  相似文献

Single crystals of synthetic vanadium-, chromium- and cobalt-bearing garnets, Pyr:V0.06, Pyr:V0.13, Pyr:Cr0.04, Pyr:Co0.10, and Gt:Co3.00, and a natural vanadium-bearing grossular, Gross:V0.07 (Cr3+ < 0.005), were studied by electronic absorption spectroscopy in the wavenumber range 35 000–5000 cm−1 under ambient conditions and at temperatures up to 600 K and pressures up to 8 GPa. The T and P behavior of the absorption band energies and intensities shows the following for the different transition metal-bearing garnets: Cr: The thermal expansion of chromium octahedra are similar to and the Racah parameter the same in synthetic Cr-doped pyrope, αpoly≅ 1.3 × 10−5 K−1, and in natural pyrope, αpoly≅ 1.5 × 10−5 K−1, and B=655 cm−1, respectively. Ca2+[8]-free garnets have a slightly stronger crystal field at the Y[6] site and, therefore, the energies of the two spin-allowed Cr3+ dd bands are ca. 300 cm−1 higher in Mg-pyrope than in natural Ca-bearing pyrope. Co: Increasing temperature causes only a small thermal expansion of the cobalt dodecahedra. Increasing pressure gives rise to appreciable compression, which is similar to that of the Fe2+-dodecahedra in almandine, where k=125 ± 25 GPa. T and P dependence of the Co band intensities may be caused by strong spin-orbit coupling. V: Occurs in at least two valence states and structural sites: (1) V3+ in octahedral sites gives rise to two spin-allowed bands, at 17 220 cm−1 and 24 600 cm−1, whose temperature dependence is typical for spin-allowed dd transitions in centrosymmetric sites. (2) V4+, which causes a set of dd absorption bands similar to those observed in the spectrum of V4+-doped Zr[SiO4]. The P behavior of the V absorption bands indicates an interaction between V3+ and V4+ species. Received: 27 June 2001 / Accepted: 19 December 2001  相似文献

In order to clarify Al2O3 content and phase stability of aluminous CaSiO3-perovskite, high-pressure and high-temperature transformations of Ca3Al2Si3O12 garnet (grossular) were studied using a MA8-type high-pressure apparatus combined with synchrotron radiation. Recovered samples were examined by analytical transmission electron microscopy. At pressures of 23–25 GPa and temperatures of 1000–1600 K, grossular garnet decomposed into a mixture of aluminum-bearing Ca-perovskite and corundum, although a metastable perovskite with grossular composition was formed when the heating duration was not long enough at 1000 K. On release of pressure, this aluminum-bearing CaSiO3-perovskite transformed to the “LiNbO3-type phase” and/or amorphous phase depending on its Al2O3 content. The structure of this LiNbO3-type phase is very similar to that of LiNbO3 but is not identical. CaSiO3-perovskite with 8 to 25 mol% Al2O3 was quenched to alternating lamellae of amorphous layer and LiNbO3-type phase. On the other hand, a quenched product from CaSiO3-perovskite with less than 6 mol% consisted only of amorphous phase. Most of the inconsistencies amongst previous studies could be explained by the formation of perovskite with grossular composition, amorphous phase, and the LiNbO3-type phase. Phase D is a dense hydrous magnesium silicate (ideal formula MgSi2H2O6) which contains silicon cations exclusively in octahedral coordination. Measurements of the unit cell parameters of phase D were made to pressures of 30 GPa using a diamond anvil cell and employing synchrotron X-ray diffraction. A neon pressure medium was used. Using a third order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state the isothermal bulk modulus of phase D was determined as 166(±3) GPa with K′ equal to 4.1(±0.3). The compression of phase D is anisotropic with the c-axis twice as compressible as the a-axis. Above 20 GPa, however, the c/a ratio becomes pressure independent.  Raman spectra of hydrous β-Mg2SiO4 (1.65 wt% H2O) have been measured in a diamond-anvil cell with helium as a pressure-transmitting medium at room temperature to 50 GPa. We observe three OH-stretching modes, a doublet with components at 3329 and 3373 cm−1, which decrease linearly with pressure, and a single mode at 3586 cm−1, which remains nearly constant up to 24 GPa before decreasing at higher pressures. Assessment of the mode frequencies and their pressure dependence, together with previous results from X-ray and IR data, are consistent with protonation of the O1 site in agreement with previous studies. Strict assignment of Raman activity awaits detailed structural models. The nature of the protonation in wadsleyite may require more specific experimental probes for full solution of the hydrogen-site problem. Received: 18 July 2000 / Accepted: 22 November 2000  相似文献

The elastic properties of CaSnO3 perovskite have been measured by both ultrasonic interferometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction at high pressures. The single-crystal diffraction data collected using a diamond-anvil cell show that CaSnO3 perovskite does not undergo any phase transitions at pressures below 8.5?GPa at room temperature. Ultrasonic measurements in the multianvil press to a maximum pressure of ~8?GPa at room temperature yielded S- and P-wave velocity data as a function of pressure. For a third-order Birch-Murnaghan EoS the adiabatic elastic moduli and their pressure derivatives determined from these velocity data are K S0=167.2±3.1?GPa, K S0=4.89±0.17, G 0=89.3±1.0?GPa, G 0=0.90±0.02. The quoted uncertainties include contributions from uncertainties in both the room pressure length and density of the specimen, as well as uncertainties in the pressure calibration of the multianvil press. Because the sample is a polycrystalline specimen, this value of K S0 represents an upper limit to the Reuss bound (conditions of uniform stress) on the elastic modulus of CaSnO3 perovskite. If the value of αγT is assumed to be 0.01, the value of K S0 corresponds to K T0=165.5±3.1?GPa. The 10 P-V data obtained by single-crystal diffraction were fit with a third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation-of-state to obtain the parameters V 0=246.059±0.013 Å3, K T0=162.6±1.0?GPa, K T0=5.6±0.3. Because single-crystal measurements under hydrostatic conditions are made under conditions of uniform stress, they yield bulk moduli equivalent to the Reuss bound on a polycrystalline specimen. The results from the X-ray and ultrasonic experiments are therefore consistent. The bulk modulus of CaSnO3 perovskite lies above the linear trend of K 0 with inverse molar volume, previously determined for Ca perovskites. This prevents an estimation of the bulk modulus of CaSiO3 perovskite by extrapolation. However, our value of G 0 for CaSnO3 perovskite combined with values for CaTiO3 and CaGeO3 forms a linear trend of G 0 with octahedral tilt angle. This allows a lower bound of 150?GPa to be placed on the shear modulus of CaSiO3 by extrapolation.  相似文献

Physical properties including the equation of state, elasticity, and shear strength of pyrite have been measured by a series of X-ray diffraction in diamond-anvil cells at pressures up to 50 GPa. A Birch–Murnaghan equation of state fit to the quasihydrostatic pressure–volume data obtained from laboratory X-ray source/film techniques yields a quasihydrostatic bulk modulus K 0T =133.5 (±5.2) GPa and bulk modulus first pressure derivative K 0T =5.73 (±0.58). The apparent equation of state is found to be strongly dependent on the stress conditions in the sample. The stress dependency of the high-pressure properties is examined with anisotropic elasticity theory from subsequent measurements of energy-dispersive radial diffraction experiments in the diamond-anvil cell. The calculated values of K 0T depend largely upon the angle ψ between the diffracting plane normal and the maximum stress axis. The uniaxial stress component in the sample, t3−σ1, varies with pressure as t=−3.11+0.43P between 10 and 30 GPa. The pressure derivatives of the elastic moduli dC 11/dP=5.76 (±0.15), dC 12/dP=1.41 (±0.11) and dC 44/dP=1.92 (±0.06) are obtained from the diffraction data assuming previously reported zero-pressure ultrasonic data (C 11=382 GPa, C 12=31 GPa, and C 44=109 GPa).  The viscosity of albite (NaAlSi3O8) melt was measured at high pressure by the in situ falling-sphere method using a high-resolution X-ray CCD camera and a large-volume multianvil apparatus installed at SPring-8. This system enabled us to conduct in situ viscosity measurements more accurately than that using the conventional technique at pressures of up to several gigapascals and viscosity in the order of 100 Pa s. The viscosity of albite melt is 5.8 Pa s at 2.6 GPa and 2.2 Pa s at 5.3 GPa and 1973 K. Experiments at 1873 and 1973 K show that the decrease in viscosity continues to 5.3 GPa. The activation energy for viscosity is estimated to be 316(8) kJ mol−1 at 3.3 GPa. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that a gradual decrease in viscosity of albite melt at high pressure may be explained by structural changes such as an increase in the coordination number of aluminum in the melt.
