New theory of the Earth

From time to time the phrase ＇Theory of the Earth＇ occurs among titles in Earth science history. It usually happens after times of changing major scientific paradigms. A first peak occurred in the Renaissance at the time of the origin of modern science with the introduction of the word geology by Ulisse Aldrovandi in 1603; and the phrase moved around in the controversy about the origin of marine fossils found in mountains, with works by Alessandro degli Alessandri （about 1500）, Girolamo Cardano （1550）, Gabriele Falloppio （1564）, Bernard Palissy （1580）, Andrea Cesalpino （1596）, and Simeone Maioli （1597）.     

New information on the giant Devonian lobe-finned fish Edenopteron from the New South Wales south coast

Abstract

Edenopteron, with a lower jaw some 48?cm long, and total length perhaps exceeding 3 m, is the largest Devonian lobe-fin known from semi-articulated remains. New material described from the type locality (Boyds Tower, south of Eden) includes three slightly smaller articulated skulls and jaws, and additional bones of the shoulder girdle. Another articulated skull roof, shoulder girdle and palate is described from a second locality (Hegarty Bay), about 10?km south of Boyds Tower. Both localities represent the upper part of the Worange Point Formation, of late Famennian age (uppermost Upper Devonian). The new morphological evidence supports a close relationship to the tristichopterids Mandageria and Cabonnichthys, from the slightly older (Frasnian, Upper Devonian) fossil fish assemblage at Canowindra, New South Wales. Features of the shoulder girdle (supracleithrum, anocleithrum) suggest that Edenopteron is more closely related to Mandageria than Cabonnichthys. Eight characters are used to define a tristichopterid subfamily Mandageriinae, to which Notorhizodon from the Middle Devonian of Antarctica is also referred. The Mandageriinae is endemic to East Gondwana (Australia–Antarctica). In combination with possibly the most primitive tristichopterid, Marsdenichthys from the Frasnian of Victoria, these distributions implicate East Gondwana as a likely place of origin for the entire group. This relates to the major but unresolved question of a possible Gondwana origin for all the land vertebrates (tetrapods).

• An endemic Gondwanan sub-group (Mandageriinae) of the Devonian fishes closest to land animals (tetrapodomorph tristichopterids) is confirmed.

• Retention of primitive features (e.g. accessory vomers) points to an earlier origin of the Mandageriinae in East Gondwana, consistent with the Victorian occurrence of another primitive tristichopterid (Marsdenichthys).

• Edenopteron is confirmed from a second south coast fossil site, and new characters indicate its closest relative is Mandageria from Canowindra, NSW.

• Congruent evidence of older Gondwanan occurrences in other groups (basal tetrapodomorphs, rhizodontids, canowindrids), and previously dismissed trace fossil evidence (Grampians trackways), implicate South China and East Gondwana as the likely place of origin for all land vertebrates.

     

New data on the age of the glaciation in the New Siberian Islands (Russian Eastern Arctic)

To estimate the age of the glaciation in the New Siberian Islands, fossils of small mammals from the Sana-Balagan site (Faddeevsky Island, Russian Eastern Arctic) have been studied. The evolutionary degree of this fauna, which indicates the age of the sediments underlying the glacial deposits, suggests that the glaciation of the New Siberian Islands began no earlier than 190–210 thousand years ago. The new biochronological data in combination with ²³⁰Th/²³⁴U dates show that the geological event in question was synchronous with the Moscow glaciation or the Moscow stage of the Dnieper glaciation (the Vychegda glaciation, the final stage of the Saalian, the final stage of the Riss, the end of the MIS 6, 180–140 thousand years ago).     

鲍玛序列的多解性

鲍玛序列作为浊积岩的识别标志被广泛认可,但随着对深水沉积过程认识的深入,鲍玛序列逐渐被重新认识。近年来对深水沉积物重力流的研究发现:鲍玛序列不是浊流的唯一产物,深水环境中其它沉积过程也可形成鲍玛序列。因此,在野外识别浊积岩的过程中,要慎重使用鲍玛序列进行判别。     

旧貌换新颜--洛杉矶The Standard大酒店

许多搁置数十年的公寓楼，公共机构和商务大楼的翻修带来了洛杉矶市中心建设的高潮。这座酒店也是在这样的背景下修建成的。它的前身是始建于1956年的Superior Oll公司总部。     

湘西北大庸—古丈—吉首大断裂的新认识

通过1∶5万花垣、古丈地区区域地质矿产调查工作,在系统查明湘西北地区大庸—古丈—吉首大断裂的地表变形特征及断裂两侧早古生代岩石地层单位的岩性、岩相变化及古生物群落分布的基础上,对该断裂的综合研究表明:它是扬子陆块东南缘武陵地块与雪峰地块的重要边界断裂,为长期活动的区域控岩、控相、控矿断裂,这一新认识对湘西北地区锰、铅锌等沉积矿产的找矿与勘查具有指导意义。     

胶东群新议

太古代胶东群主要是由ＴＴＧ花岗质片麻岩组成。近期区调研究发现真正的变质表壳岩系仅在其中呈包体出现,据岩性特征胶东岩群可分为苗家岩组、郭格庄岩组,时代为晚太古代     

New mid-Ordovician ostracods of the Tetradellidae

The author discusses dimorphism in Egorovella and his new genus Egorovellina. A new term, "marginal dimorphism," is proposed for dimorphism involving a broadening of the marginal surface, as contrasted with "velar" and "histial" dimorphism which refer to modifications of various types of carinal structures. The author suggests that this type of dimorphism may indicate that the males and females lived in different biotopes. Seven new species of Egorovella and the genus and two species of Egorovellina are described and illustrated. --J. M. Berdan.

湘中测水组植物群中发现新种和新组合

近年来,我队在涟邵煤田北段测水组,采集了大量化石,经南京地质古生物研究所和宜昌地矿所鉴定,古植物确定有22个属,44个种,其中一些新种群为前人所未见。      

Metamorphic History of the Northeastern Reading Prong, New York and Northern New Jersey

The Reading Prong is part of the Precambrian basement whichis discontinuously exposed in the north-central Appalachians.Precambrian rocks in the northeastern Prong consist of diversegneisses which were plastically deformed, metmorphosed to thehornblende granulite facies, and intruded by syntectonic granitesaround 1150 m.y. ago. Sillimanite-garnet-biotite-quartz-two feldspar paragneisses(locally with hornblende or cordierite and without sillimanite)are one of the predominate lithologies in this area. Micro-probeand wet chemical analyses show biotites from these assemblageshave variable Fe/Mg mol. ratios (3.5–0.3) and containappreciable Ti and A1. The biotites are not zoned with respectto Fe or Mg (except for a systematic decrease in the Fe/Mg ratioin rims contiguous with garnet), however Ti is typically depletedin rim compositions with a reciprocal increase of octahedralA1. Garnets are principally solutions of almandine and pyrope(Fe/Mg mol. ratio, 13.1–1.2) with minor grossularite andspessartine components. They are compositionally zoned, withFe concentrated in rims and Mg in cores (particularly wherethey are contiguous with biotite). The analyzed garnets arehomogeneous with respect to Ca and Mn. The most iron-rich biotitesand garnets are found associated with hornblende. The partitioning of Fe and Mg between the interiors of coexistinggarnet and biotite is uniform within each locality sampled.Although the partitioning is variable on a regional scale, thisappears to reflect the non-ideality of the distribution (a resultof the large and variable octahedral Ti and A1 concentrationsin biotite) and not any major, systematic variations in progrademetamorphic conditions. Low temperature alteration of these prograde assemblages issporadically present in paragneisses west of the Hudson Riverand includes associations of: phengitic muscovite, epidote,clinozoisite, chlorite, and secondary calcite. Isotopic agedata (Sutter & Dallmeyer, 1972) suggest slow uplift of thissegment of the Reading Prong, and it appears that these alterationfeatures developed as a result of prolonged cooling followingthe 1150 m.y. metamorphism. In an attempt to re-equilibrateto the lower temperature conditions during uplift, localizedexchange of Fe and Mg occurred between contiguous garnet andbiotite. Alteration is more widespread in the easternmost paragneisseswhere textural, chemical, and isotopic data suggest these secondaryfeatures are, in part, a result of retrograde metamorphism duringone or more Paleozoic orogenic events recorded in the surroundingterrain.
