We present the first CCD sets of complete light curves for the W Ursae Majoris system NSVS 1557555.The observations were performed in the B, V and Ic bands using the 0.25  m telescope of the Stazione Astronomica Betelgeuse Northern Italy, during 8 nights in October and November 2016.Based on our new eleven Time of Minima (ToM), and two recent ones found in bibliography, the short orbital period of the system is confirmed and revised to P = 0.2725163 days .A reasonable fit of the synthetic light curves of the data indicate that NSVS 1557555 is a late-type (K1+K3) shallow contact binary system of W-Subtype of the W Ursae Majoris systems, with a mass ratio of q = 1.8, a degree of contact factor f = 12.5%, a temperature difference between the components of 240K and inclination i = 85°.The light curves show asymmetries at the maxima with the maximum at phase 0.75 higher the other one (inverse O’Connell effect). To explain the light asymmetries we used a model that involves an hot spotted region on the surface of the cooler star. The definitive solution is only possible with a large amount of third light (L3 = 0.58 in B Filter). It may come from a hot tertiary component. The absolute dimensions of the system are estimated. From the logM-logL diagram it is seen that both components of NSVS 1557555 follow the general pattern of the W subtype W Ursae Majoris systems. The orbital angular momentum is compared with those of other W UMa type binaries and is normal.  相似文献

Well-determined physical parameters of 130 W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) systems were collected from the literature. Based on these data, the evolutionary status and dynamical evolution of W UMa systems are investigated. It is found that there is no evolutionary difference between W- and A-type systems in the   M – J   diagram, which is consistent with the results derived from the analysis of observed spectral type and of   M – R   and   M – L   diagrams of W UMa systems.   M – R   and   M – L   diagrams of W- and A-type systems indicate that a large amount of energy should be transferred from the more massive to the less massive component, so that they are not in thermal equilibrium and undergo thermal relaxation oscillation. Moreover, the distribution of angular momentum, together with the distribution of the mass ratio, suggests that the mass ratio of the observed W UMa systems decreases with decreasing total mass. This could be the result of the dynamical evolution of W UMa systems, which suffer angular momentum loss and mass loss as a result of the magnetic stellar wind. Consequently, the tidal instability forces these systems towards lower q values and finally to rapidly rotating single stars.  相似文献

The mean cycle length of the catalysmic binary HT Cas, which is remarkable because of the shortness of its orbital period, has been determined as 400d±50d. The hitherto assuixed value of 30d proved unfounded. Some aspects arising when classifying long-cycle objects and SU Ursae Majoris variables are pointed out, a s well as the relation between large cycle length and small accretion rate.  相似文献

The first CCD photometric complete light curves of the eclipsing binary NSVS 7051868 were obtained during six nights in January 2016 in the B, V and Ic bands using the 0.25 m telescope of the Stazione Astronomica Betelgeuse in Magnago, Italy. These observations confirm the short period (P = 0.517 days) variation found by Shaw and collaborators in their online list (http://www.physast.uga.edu/~jss/nsvs/) of periodic variable stars found in the Northern Sky Variability Survey. The light curves were modelled using the Wilson–Devinney code and the elements obtained from this analysis are used to compute the physical parameters of the system in order to study its evolutionary status.A grid of solutions for several fixed values of mass ratio was calculated.A reasonable fit of the synthetic light curves of the data indicate that NSVS 7051868 is an A-subtype W Ursae Majoris contact binary system, with a low mass ratio of q = 0.22, a degree of contact factor f = 35.5% and inclination i = 85°. Our light curves shows a time of constant light in the secondary eclipse of approximately 0.1 in phase. The light curve solution reveals a component temperature difference of about 700 K. Both the value of the fill-out factor and the temperature difference suggests that NSVS 7051868 is a system in a key evolutionary stage of the Thermal Relaxation Oscillation theory. The distance to NSVS 7051868 was calculated as 180 pc from this analysis, taking into account interstellar extinction.  相似文献

Theoretical study indicates that a contact binary system would merge into a rapidly rotating single star due to tidal instability when the spin angular momentum of the system is more than a third of its orbital angular momentum. Assuming that W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) contact binary systems rigorously comply with the Roche geometry and the dynamical stability limit is at a contact degree of about 70 per cent, we obtain that W UMa systems might suffer Darwin's instability when their mass ratios are in a region of about 0.076–0.078 and merge into the fast-rotating stars. This suggests that the W UMa systems with mass ratio   q ≤ 0.076  cannot be observed. Meanwhile, we find that the observed W UMa systems with a mass ratio of about 0.077, corresponding to a contact degree of about 86 per cent would suffer tidal instability and merge into the single fast-rotating stars. This suggests that the dynamical stability limit for the observed W UMa systems is higher than the theoretical value, implying that the observed systems have probably suffered the loss of angular momentum due to gravitational wave radiation (GR) or magnetic stellar wind (MSW).  相似文献

We obtained complete V and Rc light curves of the eclipsing binary V380 Gem in 2012. With our data we were able to determine six new times of minimum light and refine the orbital period of the system to 0.3366088 days. The 2003 version of the Wilson–Devinney code was used to analyze the light curves in the V and Rc bands simultaneously. It is shown that V380 Gem may be classified as an W-type W Ursae Majoris system with a high mass ratio q = 1.45, a degree of contact f = 10.6% the same temperature for both the components (ΔT = 10 K) and an orbital inclination of i  = 81.5°. Our observations show symmetric light curves in all passbands with brightness in both maxima at the same level. The absolute dimensions of V380 Gem are estimated and its dynamical evolution is inferred.  相似文献

Herein, we present the preliminary results of the spectral analysis of the Suzaku data of SW Ursae Majoris (SW UMa) and BZ Ursae Majoris (BZ UMa) which were obtained in their quiescent states. The aim of this study was to analyse 0.5–6.0 keV energy range X-ray photons of the Suzaku satellite and to determine their emission mechanisms and the areas where they were radiated from these two dwarf novae. No study on this energy range for BZ UMa has been reported in the literature. We analysed the Suzaku data in the (0.5–6.0) keV and in (0.5–2.5) keV energy bands of the systems separatelly to search for possible differences between the emission mechanisms in the energy ranges; however, none were found. We obtained the best-fitted spectral models, flux, luminosity, temperature and mass accretion rate values for the systems. The white dwarf radius of BZ UMa, which has not been reported in the literature, was found to be 6.88 × 108 cm. From this study, we concluded that the mass accretion rate values for both systems were lower than the critical mass accretion rate value in the boundary layers of cataclysmic variables, which indicates that the boundary layers are composed of optically thin thermal X-ray emitting gas in their quiescent state; these results support those of previous studies regarding SW UMa and some studies regarding BZ UMa. Another result was that there can be a coronal structure above the boundary layer which act as soft X-ray emitter for SW UMa.  相似文献

We continued the analysis of 279 G-type stars with superflares (energies in the range of 1033–1036 erg). We calculated the SFL parameter (part of the stellar surface which emits in the flare). The SFL estimates were derived from the relation connecting this value with the amplitude of the flare and its radiation on the assumption of the blackbody character of the emission at times close to its maximum. Most SFL values are in the range of 0–0.1, with values of 0.2–0.4 for some strong flares. Dependence of SFL on effective temperature for stars with superflares is similar to that found earlier for the spottedness parameter S. The SFL distribution reaches its maximum in the temperature range of about 5100–5250 K and decreases with the effective temperature increase. We suggested an assumption on the presence of bimodal distribution in the “SFL–rotation period” relation with a gap for objects with rotation periods P of about 10 days. For stars with P less than 10 days, the given data can indicate a decrease in flare areas with the P increase. Our analysis showed that significant changes both in flare energy and in flare areas can be achieved with small changes in spottedness S for one and the same star.  相似文献

We present the first CCD sets of complete light curves for two W Ursae Majoris Systems, UCAC3 276-106147 and NSVS 7377756. These light curves are here analyzed and modelled using the latest version of the Wilson-Devinney Code. We found that UCAC3 276-106147 is a W-subtype shallow-contact eclipsing binary (fill-out factor 7.5%), with a mass ratio of q = 2.88 (1/q = 0.347), a small temperature difference between the components of about ΔT =200K. NSVS 7377756 is an H-subtype binary system with a high mass ratio of q = 1.09 (1/q = 0.947), a weak degree of contact factor f = 3.8% and a temperature difference between the components of ΔT = 398 K. The light curves of both the systems appear to be unspotted. By using our 4 and 7 times of minimum light and the 30 and 104 ToMs extract from the SWASP observations, respectively for UCAC3 276-106147 and NSVS 7377756, the orbital periods are here revised. The elements obtained from this analysis are used to compute the physical parameters of the systems combining our photometric solution with the 3-D correlation obtained for contact binaries by Gazeas (2009). Based on these estimated parameters the evolutionary state of the components of the systems is investigated and discussed.  相似文献

According to the prevenient theoretical study, the minimum mass ratio for tidal stability of W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) systems is q min?=(M 2/M 1)~0.071–0.078. However, the mass ratios of some observed W UMa binaries are smaller than the theoretical minimum mass ratio. Using Eggleton’s stellar evolution code, we study the effects of metallicity and evolution on the minimum mass ratio of W UMa systems (M 1=1.2M ). We assume that $k_{1}^{2}=k_{2}^{2}$ for the component’s dimensionless gyration radii and that the contact degree is about 70 per cent. We find that the dynamical stability of W UMa binaries depends on the metallicity of W UMa systems. For the W UMa systems at age = 0 Gyr, the distribution of the minimum mass ratio has a fairly wide range, from 0.083 to 0.064, with the metallicity range from Z=0.0001 to 0.03. W UMa systems with Z=0.01 have the smallest value of the minimum mass ratio, which is about 0.064. The existence of low-q systems can be explained partly by the dependence of the dimensionless gyration radius on the metallicity. In addition, the dependence of the minimum mass ratio on the evolution, as suggested by previously work, is confirmed.  相似文献

We performed hydrodynamic computations of nonlinear stellar pulsations of population I stars at the evolutionary stages of the ascending red giant branch and the following luminosity drop due to the core helium flash. Red giants populating this region of the Hertzsprung–Russel diagram were found to be the fundamental mode pulsators. The pulsation period is the largest at the tip of the red giant branch and for stars with initial masses from 1.1 M to 1.9 M ranges from ∏ ≈ 254 day to ∏ ≈ 33 day , respectively. The rate of period change during the core helium flash is comparable with rates of secular period change in Mira type variables during the thermal pulse in the helium shell source. The period change rate is largest (∏?/∏ ≈ ?10?2 yr?1) in stars with initial mass M ZAMS = 1.1 M and decreases to ∏?/∏ ~ ?10?3 yr?1 for stars of the evolutionary sequence M ZAMS = 1.9 M . Theoretical light curves of red giants pulsating with periods ∏ > 200 day show the presence of the secondary maximum similar to that observed in many Miras.  相似文献

We present CCD photometric observations of the W UMa type contact binary EK Comae Berenices using the 2 m telescope of IUCAA Girawali Observatory, India. The star was classified as a W UMa type binary of subtype-W by Samec et al. (1996). The new V band photometric observations of the star reveal that shape of the light curve has changed significantly from the one observed by Samec et al. (1996). A detailed analysis of the light curve obtained from the high-precision CCD photometric observations of the star indicates that EK Comae Berenices is not a W-type but an A-type totally eclipsing W UMa contact binary. The photometric mass ratio is determined to be 0.349 ± 0.005. A temperature difference of ΔT = 141 ± 10 K between the components and an orbital inclination of i[°] = 89.800 ± 0.075 were obtained for the binary system. Absolute values of masses, radii and luminosities are estimated by means of the standard mass-luminosity relation for zero age main-sequence stars. The star shows O’Connell effect, asymmetries in the light curve shape around the primary and secondary maximum. The observed O’Connell effect is explained by the presence of a hot spot on the primary component.  相似文献

The formations of the blue straggler stars and the FK Com-type stars are unsolved problems in stellar astrophysics. One of the possibilities for their formations is from the coalescence of W UMa-type overcontact binary systems. Therefore, deep (f > 50%), low-mass ratio (q < 0.25) overcontact binary stars are a very important source to understand the phenomena of Blue Straggler/FK Com-type stars. Recently, 12 W UMa-type binary stars, FG Hya, GR Vir, IK Per, TV Mus, CU Tau, V857 Her, V410 Aur, XY Boo, SX CrV, QX And, GSC 619-232, and AH Cnc, were investigated photometrically. Apart from TV Mus, XY boo, and GSC 619-232, new observations of the other 9 binaries were obtained. Complete light curves of the 10 systems, FG Hya, GR Vir, IK Per, TV Mus, CU Tau, V857 Her, GSC 619-232, V410 Aur, XY Boo, and AH Cnc, were analyzed with the 2003 version of the W-D code. It is shown that all of those systems are deep (f > 50%), low-mass ratio (q < 0.25) overcontact binary stars. We found that the system GSC 619-232 has the highest degree of overcontact (f = 93.4%). The derived photometric mass ratio of V857 Her, q = 0.0653, indicates that it is the lowest-mass ratio system among W UMa-type binaries.Of the 12 sample stars, long-term period changes of 11 systems were found. About 58% (seven) of the sample binaries show cyclic period oscillation. No cyclic period changes were discovered for the other 5 systems, which may be caused by the short observational time interval or by insufficient observations. Therefore, we think that all W UMa-type binary stars may contain cyclic period variations. By considering the long-term period changes (both increase and decrease) of those binary stars, we proposed two evolutionary scenarios evolving from deep, low-mass ratio overcontact binaries into Blue Straggler/FK Com-type stars.  相似文献

In a previous paper, using Eggleton's stellar evolution code, we have discussed the structure and evolution of low-mass W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) type contact binaries with angular momentum loss owing to gravitational radiation or magnetic braking. We find that gravitational radiation is almost insignificant for cyclic evolution of low-mass W UMa type systems, and it is possible for angular momentum to be lost from W UMa systems in a magnetic stellar wind. The weaker magnetic activity shown by observations in W UMa systems is likely caused by the lower mass of the convective envelopes in these systems than in similar but non-contact binaries. The spin angular momentum cannot be neglected at any time for W UMa type systems, especially for those with extreme mass ratios. The spin angular momenta of both components are included in this paper and they are found to have a significant influence on the cyclic evolution of W UMa systems. We investigate the influence of the energy transfer on the common convective envelopes of both components in detail. We find that the mass of the convective envelope of the primary in contact evolution is slightly more than that in poor thermal contact evolution, and that the mass of the convective envelope of the secondary in contact evolution is much less than that in poor thermal contact evolution. Meanwhile, the rate of angular momentum loss of W UMa type systems is much lower than that of poor thermal contact systems. This is indeed caused by the lower masses of the convective envelopes of the components in W UMa type systems. Although the models with angular momentum loss for W UMa systems exhibit cyclic evolution, they seem to show that a W UMa system cannot continue this type of cyclic evolution indefinitely, and it might coalesce into a fast-rotating star after about 1200 cycles of evolution (about  7.0 × 109 yr  ).  相似文献

Both V701 Sco and BH Cen are two early-type short-period overcontact systems (P = 0.d762 and P = 0.d792, respectively). V701 Sco is a member of the young galactic cluster NGC 6383, while BH Cen is a component of a younger galactic cluster IC 2944 where star formation is in process. They provide good opportunity to understand the formation and evolution of binary stars. In the present paper, orbital period changes of the two binaries are investigated. It is discovered that the orbital period of BH Cen shows a long-term increase with a rate of dP/dt = +1.70(±0.39) × 10−7 days/year while it undergoes a cyclic oscillation with a period of 44.6 years and an amplitude of A3 = 0.d0216. For V701 Sco, its O-C curve reveals a periodic change with a period of 41.2 years and amplitude of A3 = 0.d0158. The mass ratio of BH Cen is 0.84, but V701 Sco contains twin B1-1.5V type stars with a mass ratio of unit. The continuous period increase of BH Cen is caused by the mass transfer from the less massive component to the more massive one at a rate of dM2/dt = 3.5 × 10−6 days/year.The cyclic period changes of both systems can be plausibly explained as the results of light-travel time effects suggesting that they are triple systems. The astrophysical parameters of the unseen tertiary components in the two systems have been determined. We think that the invisible tertiary components in both binaries played an important role in the formations and evolutions of the overcontact configurations by bringing angular momentum out from the central systems. For BH Cen, this process created the initial short period and will support its evolution into an overcontact configuration via a Case A mass transfer within the life time of the extremely young cluster IC 2944. For V701 Sco, two identical zero-age main-sequence components in an overcontact configuration suggest that it may have been formed by fission, possibly by the fission of the third body. The fact that no long-term continuous period variations were found for V701 Sco may suggest that an overcontact binary with the mass ratio of unity can be in an equilibrium revealing that the original configuration of the binary was overcontact as is its present state. It has been reported that faint stars in the two extremely young clusters are relatively scare. From the present study, it is shown that faint stars in young clusters are usually formed as companions of OB stars (including binaries). It is very difficult to detect them because of their low luminosity when compared with the more luminous OB stars.  相似文献

Knowledge of a star's rotation period and ν sin i can be used to select stars that are seen pole-on, and thus are well suited to planetary searches by astrometric or direct-imaging means. A table of such stars is presented. This method is not suitable for discriminating equator-on systems and so cannot be used to select candidates for the photometric method of W. J. Borucki and A. L. Summers (1984, Icarus58, 121–134).  相似文献

We report the photometry of a peculiar SU Ursae Majoris-type dwarf nova, ER Ursae Majoris, for 10 nights during 1998 December and 1999 March, covering a complete rise to the supermaximum and a normal outburst cycle. Superhumps have been found during the rise to the superoutburst. A negative superhump appeared in the December 22 light curve, while the superhump on the next night became positive and had a large-amplitude waveform distinct from that of the previous night. In the normal outbursts we captured, superhumps with larger or smaller amplitudes seem to always exist, although it is not necessarily true for every normal outburst. These results show great resemblance to V1159 Ori. It is more likely that superhumps occasionally exist at essentially all phases of the eruption cycles of ER UMa stars, which should be considered in modeling.  相似文献

A quantitative analysis of the ellipticity effect in close binary systems of the W Ursae Maioris type with spectroscopically known mass-ratios discloses that the photometric ellipticities of these variables are, in general, more than twice as large as the dynamical ellipticities (due to the geometrical distortion alone) computed for contact models of centrally condensed stars. If, moreover, this excess of the photometric over dynamical ellipticity is attributed to the phenomenon of gravity-darkening over distorted surfaces of the constituent components, this darkening must be present to a considerablylarger degree than that predicted by the theory of radiative transfer — a result difficult to reconcile with the existence of extensive sub-surface convection zones in late-type Main-Sequence stars. If, on the other hand, gravity-darkening is present in W UMa-type systems in the amount predicted by the theory (let alone in the presence of sub-surface convection), the only effective way of reconciling the theory with the observations would be to assume that the mean fractional radii of their constituent components are appreciablylarger than those appropriate for contact models in which the two components just fill the largestclosed Roche equipotentials capable of containing their mass. In other words, it would appear that the W UMa-type stars considered in this paper may constitute a single dumb-bell figure rather than two distinct components; and that the observed variations of light, colour or radial velocity are invoked by the axial rotation (and consequent variable cross-section) or this dumb-bell figure rather than to the contribution of individual stars.  相似文献

The distributions of geometrical and physical parameters from the CCBS (Catalogue of Contact Binary Stars) and the ASAS-3 (The All Sky Automated Survey) are discussed. The distributions of orbital periods of light curves for 374 contact binaries from the CCBS as well as 3590 contact binaries, selected by Fourier decomposition of 4216 eclipsing binaries from the ASAS-3 database, are similar. The maxima of the period distributions are between 0.31–0.40 days (0.25–0.32 days for W-type and 0.35–0.40 days for A-type) and 0.40–0.45 days for the CCBS and ASAS-3 dataset, respectively.  相似文献
