We present a study of the X-ray emission from the nuclei of galaxies observed in the core of the Perseus cluster in a deep exposure with Chandra . Point sources are found coincident with the nuclei of 13 early-type galaxies, as well as the central galaxy NGC 1275. This corresponds to all galaxies brighter than M B > −18 in the Chandra field. All of these sources have a steep power-law spectral component and four have an additional thermal component. The unabsorbed power-law luminosities in the 0.5–7.0 keV band range from 8 × 1038 to 5 × 1040 erg s−1 . We find no simple correlations between the K -band luminosity, or the FUV and NUV AB magnitudes of these galaxies and their X-ray properties. We have estimated the black hole masses of the nuclei using the K -band M BH – L K bol relation and again find no correlation between black hole mass and the X-ray luminosity. Bondi accretion on to the black holes in the galaxies with minihaloes should make them much more luminous than observed. 相似文献

We report subarcsec-resolution X-ray imaging of the core of the Perseus cluster around the galaxy NGC 1275 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory . The ROSAT -discovered holes associated with the radio lobes have X-ray bright rims which are cooler than the surrounding gas and not a result of shocks. The holes themselves may contain some hotter gas. We map strong photoelectric absorption across the northern lobe and rim owing to a small infalling irregular galaxy, known as the high-velocity system. Two outer holes, one of which was previously known, are identified with recently found spurs of low-frequency radio emission. The spiral appearance of the X-ray cooler gas and the outer optical parts of NGC 1275 may be due to angular momentum in the cooling flow. 相似文献

The dissipation of energy from sound waves and weak shocks is one of the most promising mechanisms for coupling active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity to the surrounding intracluster medium, and so offsetting cooling in cluster cores. We present a detailed analysis of the weak shock found in deep Chandra observations of the Perseus cluster core. A comparison of the spectra either side of the shock front shows that they are very similar. By performing a deprojection analysis of a sector containing the shock, we produce temperature and density profiles across the shock front. These show no evidence for a temperature jump coincident with the density jump. To understand this result, we model the shock formation using 1D hydrodynamic simulations including models with thermal conduction and γ < 5/3 gas. These models do not agree well with the data, suggesting that further physics is needed to explain the shock structure. We suggest that an interaction between the shock and the Hα filaments could have a significant effect on cooling the post-shock gas.
We also calculate the thermal energy liberated by the weak shock. The total energy in the shocked region is about 3.5 times the work needed to inflate the bubbles adiabatically, and the power of the shock is around 6 × 1044 erg s−1 per bubble, just over 1045 erg s−1 in total. 相似文献

Using a deep Chandra observation of the Perseus cluster of galaxies, we find a high-abundance shell 250 arcsec (93 kpc) from the central nucleus. This ridge lies at the edge of the Perseus radio mini-halo. In addition we identify two Hα filaments pointing towards this shell. We hypothesize that this ridge is the edge of a fossil radio bubble, formed by entrained enriched material lifted from the core of the cluster. There is a temperature jump outside the shell, but the pressure is continuous indicating a cold front. A non-thermal component is mapped over the core of the cluster with a morphology similar to the mini-halo. Its total luminosity is 4.8 × 1043 erg s−1 , extending in radius to ∼75 kpc. Assuming the non-thermal emission to be the result of inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background and infrared emission from NGC 1275, we map the magnetic field over the core of the cluster. 相似文献

We present temperature and metallicity maps of the Perseus cluster core obtained with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We find an overall temperature rise from ∼3.0 keV in the core to ∼5.5 keV at 120 kpc and a metallicity profile that rises slowly from ∼0.5 solar to ∼0.6 solar inside 60 kpc, but drops to ∼0.4 solar at 120 kpc. Spatially resolved spectroscopy in small cells shows that the temperature distribution in the Perseus cluster is not symmetrical. There is a wealth of structure in the temperature map on scales of ∼10 arcsec (5.2 kpc) showingswirliness and a temperature rise that coincides with a sudden surface brightness drop in the X-ray image. We obtain a metallicity map of the Perseus cluster core and find that the spectra extracted from the two central X-ray holes as well as the western X-ray hole are best-fit by gas with higher temperature and higher metallicity than is found in the surroundings of the holes. A spectral deprojection analysis suggests, however, that this is due to a projection effect; for the northern X-ray hole we find tight limits on the presence of an isothermal component in the X-ray hole, ruling out volume-filling X-ray gas with temperatures below 11 keV at 3σ. 相似文献

We present Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the nucleus of NGC 1275, the central, dominant galaxy in the Perseus cluster of galaxies. These are the first observations to resolve the linearly polarized emission from 3C 84, and from them we determine a Faraday rotation measure (RM) ranging from 6500 to 7500 rad m−2 across the tip of the bright southern jet component. At 22 GHz some polarization is also detected from the central pc of 3C 84, indicating the presence of even more extreme RMs that depolarize the core at lower frequencies. The nature of the Faraday screen is most consistent with being produced by magnetic fields associated with the optical filaments of ionized gas in the Perseus cluster. 相似文献

We present the results of a search for strong H α emission line galaxies (rest frame equivalent widths greater than 50 Å) in the z ≈0.23 cluster Abell 2390. The survey contains 1189 galaxies over 270 arcmin2 , and is 50 per cent complete at M r ≈−17.5+5 log h . The fraction of galaxies in which H α is detected at the 2 σ level rises from 0.0 in the central regions (excluding the cD galaxy) to 12.5±8 per cent at R 200 . For 165 of the galaxies in our catalogue, we compare the H α equivalent widths with their [O ii ] λ 3727 equivalent widths, from the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology (CNOC1) spectra. The fraction of strong H α emission line galaxies is consistent with the fraction of strong [O ii ] emission galaxies in the CNOC1 sample: only 2±1 per cent have no detectable [O ii ] emission and yet significant (>2 σ ) H α equivalent widths. Dust obscuration, non-thermal ionization, and aperture effects are all likely to contribute to this non-correspondence of emission lines. We identify six spectroscopically 'secure' k+a galaxies [ W 0 (O ii )<5 Å and W 0 (H δ )≳5 Å]; at least two of these show strong signs in H α of star formation in regions that are covered by the slit from which the spectra were obtained. Thus, some fraction of galaxies classified as k+a based on spectra shortward of 6000 Å are likely to be undergoing significant star formation. These results are consistent with a 'strangulation' model for cluster galaxy evolution, in which star formation in cluster galaxies is gradually decreased, and is neither enhanced nor abruptly terminated by the cluster environment. 相似文献

We present high-resolution images of the Faraday rotation measure (RM) structure of the radio galaxy PKS 1246−410 at the centre of the Centaurus cluster. Comparison with Hα-line and soft X-ray emission reveals a correspondence between the line-emitting gas, the soft X-ray emitting gas, regions with an excess in the RM images and signs of depolarization. Magnetic field strengths of 25 μG, organized on scales of ∼1 kpc and intermixed with gas at a temperature of 5 × 106 K with a density of ∼0.1 cm−3 , can reproduce the observed RM excess, the depolarization and the observed X-ray surface brightness. This hot gas may be in pressure equilibrium with the optical line-emitting gas, but the magnetic field strength of 25 μG associated with the hot gas provides only 10 per cent of the thermal pressure and is therefore insufficient to account for the stability of the line-emitting filaments. 相似文献

We report the results of a study of X-ray point sources coincident with the high-velocity system (HVS) projected in front of NGC 1275. A very deep X-ray image of the core of the Perseus cluster, made with the Chandra X-ray Observatory , has been used. We find a population of ultraluminous X-ray sources [ULXs; seven sources with L X (0.5 − 7.0 keV) > 7 × 1039 erg s-1 ]. As with the ULX populations in the Antennae and Cartwheel galaxies, those in the HVS are associated with a region of very active star formation. Several sources have possible optical counterparts found on the Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) images, although the X-ray brightest one does not. Absorbed power-law models fit the X-ray spectra, with most having a photon index between 2 and 3. 相似文献

We present Chandra data from a 31.7-ks observation of the Centaurus cluster, using the ACIS-S detector. Images of the X-ray emission show a plume-like feature at the centre of the cluster, of extent 60 arcsec (20 kpc in projection). The feature has the same metallicity as gas at a similar radius, but is cooler. Using adaptive binning, we generate temperature, abundance and absorption maps of the cluster core. The radial abundance profile shows that the previously known, steep abundance gradient peaks with a metallicity of 1.3–1.8 Z⊙ at a radius of about 45 arcsec (15 kpc), before falling back to 0.4 Z⊙ at the centre of the cluster. A radial temperature profile shows that the temperature decreases inwards. We determine the spatial distributions of each of two temperature components, where applicable. The radiative cooling time of the cooler component within the inner 10 arcsec (3 kpc) is less than 2×107 yr . X-ray holes in the image coincident with the radio lobes are seen, as well as two outer sharp temperature drops, or cold fronts. The origin of the plume is unclear. The existence of the strong abundance gradient is a strong constraint on extensive convection or gas motion driven by a central radio source. 相似文献
