Experimental findings and observations indicate that plunging flow is related to the formation of bed load deposition in dam reservoirs. The sediment delta begins to form in the plunging region where the inflow river water meets the ambient reservoir water. Correct estimation of dam reservoir flow, plunging point, and plunging depth is crucial for dam reservoir sedimentation and water quality issues. In this study, artificial neural network (ANN), multi‐linear regression (MLR), and two‐dimensional hydrodynamic model approaches are used for modeling the plunging point and depth. A multi layer perceptron (MLP) is used as the ANN structure. A two‐dimensional model is adapted to simulate density plunging flow through a reservoir with a sloping bottom. In the model, nonlinear and unsteady continuity, momentum, energy, and k–ε turbulence equations are formulated in the Cartesian coordinates. Density flow parameters such as velocity, plunging points, and plunging depths are determined from the simulation and model results, and these are compared with previous experimental and model works. The results show that the ANN model forecasts are much closer to the experimental data than the MLR and mathematical model forecasts.  相似文献

An understanding of the behavior of cohesive sediment is required to solve various engineering problems such as scour around bridge elements, mitigation of soil erosion, pavement design, river bed degradation, stable channel design. Pavement foundation designers principally use the California bearing ratio(CBR)to describe the subgrade and subbase materials and their strength. Several laboratory experiments were done to study the variation in the CBR of cohesive mixtures comprised of clay-gravel m...  相似文献

Suspended sediment modelling is a quite significant issue in hydrology. The prediction of suspended sediment has taken the attention of several scientists in water resources. With extrapolation, the forecasting ability of the employed forecasting model beyond the calibration range is investigated. In the present study, different smoothing parameters are used to differentiate the kurtosis of the local critical points (local minima and maxima). The two models used are an artificial neural network (ANN) model and a multiple linear regression (MLR) model for prediction in order to examine the model extrapolation ability. The ANN model provides closer estimations to the observed peaks, being higher than the corresponding MLR ones. For the local minima, the ANN predictions are higher than the MLR predictions. As there are limited local points, all the remaining ANN predictions are lower than the MLR ones except for one point.  相似文献

Soil moisture is an integral quantity in hydrology that represents the average conditions in a finite volume of soil. In this paper, a novel regression technique called Support Vector Machine (SVM) is presented and applied to soil moisture estimation using remote sensing data. SVM is based on statistical learning theory that uses a hypothesis space of linear functions based on Kernel approach. SVM has been used to predict a quantity forward in time based on training from past data. The strength of SVM lies in minimizing the empirical classification error and maximizing the geometric margin by solving inverse problem. SVM model is applied to 10 sites for soil moisture estimation in the Lower Colorado River Basin (LCRB) in the western United States. The sites comprise low to dense vegetation. Remote sensing data that includes backscatter and incidence angle from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) are used to estimate soil water content (SM). Simulated SM (%) time series for the study sites are available from the Variable Infiltration Capacity Three Layer (VIC) model for top 10 cm layer of soil for the years 1998–2005. SVM model is trained on 5 years of data, i.e. 1998–2002 and tested on 3 years of data, i.e. 2003–2005. Two models are developed to evaluate the strength of SVM modeling in estimating soil moisture. In model I, training and testing are done on six sites, this results in six separate SVM models – one for each site. Model II comprises of two subparts: (a) data from all six sites used in model I is combined and a single SVM model is developed and tested on same sites and (b) a single model is developed using data from six sites (same as model II-A) but this model is tested on four separate sites not used to train the model. Model I shows satisfactory results, and the SM estimates are in good agreement with the estimates from VIC model. The SM estimate correlation coefficients range from 0.34 to 0.77 with RMSE less than 2% at all the selected sites. A probabilistic absolute error between the VIC SM and modeled SM is computed for all models. For model I, the results indicate that 80% of the SM estimates have an absolute error of less than 5%, whereas for model II-A and II-B, 80% and 60% of the SM estimates have an error less than 10% and 15%, respectively. SVM model is also trained and tested for measured soil moisture in the LCRB. Results with RMSE, MAE and R of 2.01, 1.97, and 0.57, respectively show that the SVM model is able to capture the variability in measured soil moisture. Results from the SVM modeling are compared with the estimates obtained from feed forward-back propagation Artificial Neural Network model (ANN) and Multivariate Linear Regression model (MLR); and show that SVM model performs better for soil moisture estimation than ANN and MLR models.  相似文献

This study examines the employment of two methods, multiple linear regression (MLR) and an artificial neural network (ANN), for multistep ahead forecasting of suspended sediment. The autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model is considered for one-step ahead forecasting of sediment series in order to provide a comparison with the MLR and ANN methods. For one- and two-step ahead forecasting, the ANN model performance is superior to that of the MLR model. For longer ranges, MLR models provide better accuracy, but there is an important assumption violation. The Durbin-Watson statistics of the MLR models show a noticeable decrease from 1.3 to 0.5, indicating that the residuals are not dependent over time. The scatterplots of the three methods (MLR, ARIMA and ANN) for one-step ahead forecasting for the validation period illustrate close fits with the regression line, with the ANN configuration having a slightly higher R2 value.  相似文献

The nonlinearity of the relationship between CO2 flux and other micrometeorological variables flux parameters limits the applicability of carbon flux models to accurately estimate the flux dynamics. However, the need for carbon dioxide (CO2) estimations covering larger areas and the limitations of the point eddy covariance technique to address this requirement necessitates the modeling of CO2 flux from other micrometeorological variables. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are used because of their power to fit highly nonlinear relations between input and output variables without explaining the nature of the phenomena. This paper applied a multilayer perception ANN technique with error back propagation algorithm to simulate CO2 flux on three different ecosystems (forest, grassland and cropland) in ChinaFLUX. Energy flux (net radiation, latent heat, sensible heat and soil heat flux) and temperature (air and soil) and soil moisture were used to train the ANN and predict the CO2 flux. Diurnal half-hourly fluxes data of observations from June to August in 2003 were divided into training, validating and testing. Results of the CO2 flux simulation show that the technique can successfully predict the observed values with R2 value between 0.75 and 0.866. It is also found that the soil moisture could not improve the simulative accuracy without water stress. The analysis of the contribution of input variables in ANN shows that the ANN is not a black box model, it can tell us about the controlling parameters of NEE in different ecosystems and micrometeorological environment. The results indicate the ANN is not only a reliable, efficient technique to estimate regional or global CO2 flux from point measurements and understand the spatiotemporal budget of the CO2 fluxes, but also can identify the relations between the CO2 flux and micrometeorological variables.  相似文献

Proper estimation of the spatial distribution of water-table depth is highly important in most groundwater studies. Groundwater depth is measured at specific and limited points and it is estimated for other parts using spatial estimation methods. In this study, two multivariate methods, artificial neural network (ANN) and multiple linear regression (MLR), are examined to estimate water-table depth in an unconfined aquifer located in Shibkooh, Iran. The different ancillary data, including spatial coordinates, digital elevation model (DEM), aquifer bed elevation, specific resistivity and aquifer thickness were used to improve estimates based on these methods. It was proved that performance of the ANN surpasses that of the MLR method. Using the spatial coordinates, the aquifer bed elevation and aquifer thickness resulted in the optimum spatial estimation of the water-table depth. These parameters, directly or indirectly, affect the water-table depth estimation through techniques such as ANN capable of modelling of nonlinear relationships.  相似文献

Abstract

Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) is an electromagnetic technique for measurements of water and solute transport in soils. The relationship between the TDR-measured dielectric constant (Ka ) and bulk soil electrical conductivity ([sgrave]a) to water content (θW) and solute concentration is difficult to describe physically due to the complex dielectric response of wet soil. This has led to the development of mostly empirical calibration models. In the present study, artificial neural networks (ANNs) are utilized for calculations of θw and soil solution electrical conductivity ([sgrave]w) from TDR-measured Ka and [sgrave]a in sand. The ANN model performance is compared to other existing models. The results show that the ANN performs consistently better than all other models, suggesting the suitability of ANNs for accurate TDR calibrations.  相似文献

Six artificial neural network (ANN) models are developed to predict various response parameters of kinematic soil pile interaction. These responses include (1) kinematic response factors for free and fixed head piles in homogenous soil layer to derive foundation input motion (2) normalized bending moment at fixed head of pile in homogenous soil layer (3) normalized kinematic pile moment at the interface of two soil layers of sharply different soil stiffnesses. These ANN models represent simple solutions that can be implemented in a simple calculator capable of matrix operation and bypass the site response analysis and the complex wave diffraction analysis. The data required for ANN training is generated using beam on dynamic Winkler formulation (BDWF). Fifty percent of the data is used to train the ANN models while remaining 50% is used to test the ANN models. The trained ANN models show good agreement with BDWF results.  相似文献

In this study, artificial neural network analyses (ANN) were used to identify the forcing environmental variables that are most significant in governing the transpiration rates of an Austrian Pine stand and its forest floor. Latent heat flux densities (Lh) of the Austrian Pine stand and its forest floor were separately measured using the eddy covariance technique. To assess the sensitivity of the ANNs to input information on the soil water status, the site calibrated soil hydrological model SWIF was used to compute average volumetric soil water contents of different depth intervals. Results show that forest floor transpiration dynamics can be adequately modelled using the global radiation reaching the forest floor and the topsoil water content (0–50 cm). The response functions of the total forest and forest floor showed a clear difference in sensitivity of latent heat fluxes to global radiation, air temperature and soil water content. Most significantly, results demonstrate that the presented ANN analysis is suited for assessing effective rooting depths from measured transpiration rates and soil water contents.  相似文献

The estimation of sediment yield is important in design, planning and management of river systems. Unfortunately, its accurate estimation using traditional methods is difficult as it involves various complex processes and variables. This investigation deals with a hybrid approach which comprises genetic algorithm-based artificial intelligence (GA-AI) models for the prediction of sediment yield in the Mahanadi River basin, India. Artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) models are developed for sediment yield prediction, where all parameters associated with the models are optimized using genetic algorithms simultaneously. Water discharge, rainfall and temperature are used as input to develop the GA-AI models. The performance of the GA-AI models is compared to that of traditional AI models (ANN and SVM), multiple linear regression (MLR) and sediment rating curve (SRC) method for evaluating the predictive capability of the models. The results suggest that GA-AI models exhibit better performance than other models.  相似文献

An application of the artificial neural network (ANN) approach for predicting mean grain size using electric resistivity data from Bam city is presented. A feed forward back propagation network was developed employing 45 sets of input data. The input variables in the ANN model are the electrical resistivity, water table as a Boolean value and depth; the output is the mean grain size. To demonstrate the authenticity of this approach, the network predictions are compared with those from interpolation methods and the same data. This comparison shows that the ANN approach performs better results. The predicted and observed mean grain size values were compared and show high correlation coefficients. The ANN approach maps show a high degree of correlation with well data based grain size maps and can therefore be used conservatively to better understand the influence of input parameters on sedimentological predictions.  相似文献

This study presents a multiscale framework for downscaling of the General Circulation Model (GCM) outputs to the mean monthly temperature at regional scale using a wavelet based Second order Voltera (SoV) model. The models are developed using the reanalysis climatic data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and are validated using the simulated climatic dataset from the Can CM4 GCM for five locations in the Krishna river basin, India. K-means clustering, based on the multiscale wavelet entropy of the predictors, is used for obtaining the clusters of the input climatic variables. Principal component analysis (PCA) is used to obtain the representative variables from each cluster. These input variables are then used to develop a wavelet based multiscale model using Second order Volterra approach to simulate observed mean monthly temperature for the selected locations in the basin. These models are called W-P-SoV models in this paper. For the purpose of comparison, linear multi-resolution models are developed using Multiple Linear regression (MLR) and are called W-P MLR models. The performance of the models is further compared with other Wavelet-PCA based models coupled with Multiple linear regression models (P-MLR) and Artificial Neural Networks (P-ANN), and, stand-alone MLR and ANN to establish the superiority of the proposed approach. The results indicate that the performance of the wavelet based models is superior in terms of downscaling accuracy when compared with the other models used.  相似文献

Interpolations of groundwater table elevation in dissected uplands   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

The variable elevation of the groundwater table in the St. Louis area was estimated using multiple linear regression (MLR), ordinary kriging, and cokriging as part of a regional program seeking to assess liquefaction potential. Surface water features were used to determine the minimum water table for MLR and supplement the principal variables for ordinary kriging and cokriging. By evaluating the known depth to the water and the minimum water table elevation, the MLR analysis approximates the groundwater elevation for a contiguous hydrologic system. Ordinary kriging and cokriging estimate values in unsampled areas by calculating the spatial relationships between the unsampled and sampled locations. In this study, ordinary kriging did not incorporate topographic variations as an independent variable, while cokriging included topography as a supporting covariable. Cross validation suggests that cokriging provides a more reliable estimate at known data points with less uncertainty than the other methods. Profiles extending through the dissected uplands terrain suggest that: (1) the groundwater table generated by MLR mimics the ground surface and elicits a exaggerated interpolation of groundwater elevation; (2) the groundwater table estimated by ordinary kriging tends to ignore local topography and exhibits oversmoothing of the actual undulations in the water table; and (3) cokriging appears to give the realistic water surface, which rises and falls in proportion to the overlying topography. The authors concluded that cokriging provided the most realistic estimate of the groundwater surface, which is the key variable in assessing soil liquefaction potential in unconsolidated sediments.  相似文献

Four vertical Ra profiles have been measured across the East Pacific Rise (EPR) from Callao to Tahiti. These profiles show that Ra in the deep water (below 2 km depth) increases toward the EPR. However, this increase does not necessarily indicate a Ra source on the EPR. The increase from Tahiti toward the EPR reflects the general trend of the Pacific Ra distribution. The decrease from the EPR eastward to the Peru Basin is probably due to the continental effect with higher sedimentation rates. The hydrography, especially potential temperature and oxygen, indicates significant differences below about 3 km depth between the east and west flanks of the EPR indicating the effect of the cold bottom water to the west of the EPR. The benthic front is identified at 3.9 km depth at the westernmost station near Tahiti. Silicate and salinity data are by no means unique and reflect a complicated local circulation and mixing pattern with a minor intrusion of the Antarctic Bottom Water from the south into the Peru Basin. The θ-Ra and Ra-Si relationships both indicate an enrichment of Ra in the deep water below 2 km depth probably due to input from the underlying sediments. Above 2 km depth, Ra covaries almost linearly with θ as well as Si, mimicking a stable conservative property. This suggests that the radiodecay rate is nearly balanced by the input rate within the water column between 1 and 2 km depth in which θ is linearly correlated withS.Simple vertical model calculations show that the in-situ production of Ra by particulate dissolution in the deep water is negligible within a reasonable range of upwelling rates from 2 to 12 m/yr. Thus the Ra profiles show a net decay effect and so the θ-Ra relations are not linear in the deep water. In fact, the composite θ-Ra plots show a break at 25 dpm/100 kg (at 2 km depth) rather than a smooth curve, while theθ-S plots are essentially linear. A maximum Ra production rate of about 8 × 10?3 (dpm/100 kg) yr?1 is obtained from all the profiles with minimum upwelling rates between 0.7 and 3.5 m/yr.  相似文献

Accurate forecasting of sediment is an important issue for reservoir design and water pollution control in rivers and reservoirs. In this study, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) approach is used to construct monthly sediment forecasting system. To illustrate the applicability of ANFIS method the Great Menderes basin is chosen as the study area. The models with various input structures are constructed for the purpose of identification of the best structure. The performance of the ANFIS models in training and testing sets are compared with the observed data. To get more accurate evaluation of the results ANFIS models, the best fit model structures are also tested by artificial neural networks (ANN) and multiple linear regression (MLR) methods. The results of three methods are compared, and it is observed that the ANFIS is preferable and can be applied successfully because it provides high accuracy and reliability for forecasting of monthly total sediment.  相似文献

This study compares three linear models and one non-linear model, specifically multiple linear regression (MLR) with ordinary least squares (OLS) estimates, robust regression, ridge regression, and artificial neural networks (ANNs), to identify an appropriate transfer function in statistical downscaling (SD) models for the daily maximum and minimum temperatures (Tmax and Tmin) and daily precipitation occurrence and amounts (Pocc and Pamount). This comparison was made over twenty-five observation sites located in five different Canadian provinces (British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Québec). Reanalysis data were employed as atmospheric predictor variables of SD models. Predictors of linear transfer functions and ANN were selected by linear correlations coefficient and mutual information, respectively. For each downscaled case, annual and monthly models were developed and analysed. The monthly MLR, annual ANN, annual ANN, and annual MLR yielded the best performance for Tmax, Tmin, Pocc and Pamont according to the modified Akaike information criterion (AICu). A monthly MLR is recommended for the transfer functions of the four predictands because it can provide a better performance for the Tmax and as good performance as the annual MLR for the Tmin, Pocc, and Pamount. Furthermore, a monthly MLR can provide a slightly better performance than an annual MLR for extreme events. An annual MLR approach is also equivalently recommended for the transfer functions of the four predictands because it showed as good a performance as monthly MLR in spite of its mathematical simplicity. Robust and ridge regressions are not recommended because the data used in this study are not greatly affected by outlier data and multicollinearity problems. An annual ANN is recommended only for the Tmin, based on the best performance among the models in terms of both the RMSE and AICu.  相似文献

Soil water repellency may be characterized in terms of the delayed infiltration time of a water droplet resting on the soil surface, which is, water drop penetration time (WDPT), or repellency persistence. Such repellency persistence varies nonlinearly with soil water content (θg), although no models have been proposed to reproduce the variation of WDPT with θg in soils. Dynamic factor analysis (DFA) is used to identify two common patterns of unexplained variability in a scattered dataset of WDPT versus θg measurements. A four‐parameter lognormal distribution was fitted to both common patterns obtained by DFA, and these were combined additively in a weighted multiple linear bimodal model. We show how such an empirical model is capable of reproducing a large variety of WDPT versus θg curve shapes (N = 80) both within a wide range of measured WDPTs (0–17 000 s) and for samples with organic matter content ranging from 21·7 to 80·6 g (100 g)?1.
