Mechanisms responsible for remanent magnetization in lunar samples are different from mechanisms for terrestrial samples simply because lunar samples contain iron and iron alloys, while terrestrial samples contain oxides as major remanence carriers. Nine new remanence mechanisms for iron and iron-nickel alloys are proposed in this paper, and their characteristics are summarized. The remanence mechanisms are MTRM (Martensitic), DARM (Duplex Anneal), RCRM (Recrystallization), SRRM (Shock Transition), TPRM (Transition Point), TMRM (Transformation), RMRM (Reverse Transformation), TSRM (Shock Twinning), DCRM (Precipitation). Specific metallographic criteria for recognition of phase structures associated with the mechanisms are briefly described, and micrographs of some of the phase designations are presented. Magnetic remanence properties for iron-nickel alloys are dependent on the amount of nickel and on the thermal history of the alloy. Specific phase structures associated with some transformations impart high magnetic stability even in large grains of metal and alloys ( 1 mm). The proposed mechanisms may apply to the complete size range of metal in the lunar samples (0.002m to 1000m). It is likely that magnetic remanence properties in lunar samples will have to be reinterpreted in terms of the proposed mechanisms.  相似文献

Examples of pure lunar mountains, dark and light maria, and cratered terrae have been observed with the UBVRI stellar photometry system. Johnson's (1965) absolute calibration was used to compute brightnesses. These brightnesses were reduced using Hapke's photometric model to a standard geometry (angle of incidence 60°, emergence 40°, phase 90°), and relative albedos were then computed.The mountains, as distinct from the other regions, appear to require a wavelength dependent phase function. The albedos for the four topographic types are approximately linear functions of wavelength. The terrae are redder than the maria. Very low contrast between the topographies is predicted for full-moon at wavelengths shorter than 0.30. On the basis of laboratory studies, the lunar particles are comparable to basalt grains having sizes less than 50m. Larger particle sizes are associated with the dark maria and smaller ones with the cratered highlands.  相似文献

Based on far-infrared spectroscopy of a small sample of nearbyinfrared-bright and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with theISO Long Wavelength Spectrometer we find adramatic progression in ionic/atomic fine-structure emission line andmolecular/atomic absorption line characteristics in these galaxiesextending from strong [O III]52,88 m and [N III]57 m lineemission to detection of only faint [C II]158 m line emissionfrom gas in photodissociation regions in the ULIRGs. The molecularabsorption spectra show varying excitation as well, extending fromgalaxies in which the molecular population mainly occupies the groundstate to galaxies in which there is significant population in higherlevels. In the case of the prototypical ULIRG, the merger galaxy Arp220, the spectrum is dominated by absorption lines of OH, H2O, CH,and [O I]. Low [O III]88 m line flux relative to the integratedfar-infrared flux correlates with low excitation and does not appear tobe due to far-infrared extinction or to density effects. A progressiontoward soft radiation fields or very dusty H II regions may explainthese effects.  相似文献

Full-disk images from the Cartesian Full-Disk Telescope no. 2 (CFDT2) were used to study the center-to-limb (CLV) variation of facular contrast in two colors. The CFDT2 images, which have 2.5 arc sec pixels, were obtained during the summer months of 1993, 1994 and 1995. In order to minimize the bias in finding faint facular features in continuum images, we have used coaligned images obtained in the Ca K-line to identify faculae. Faculae were sorted into 20 annular bins of equal width. To reduce the effects of seeing, faculae were not identified closer to the limb than =0.2. The facular pixel contrasts were fitted to various trial functions. The contrast in the blue filter (470.6 nm) rose from 0.122% at disk center to 12.2% at =0.2. The contrast in the red filter (672.3 nm) rose from 0.13% at disk center to 8.16% at =0.2. We have also analyzed the facular contrasts multiplied by their -value to obtain an estimate of facular flux tube contrasts. These flux tube contrasts increased roughly linearly from =0.95 to 0.25. The blue flux tube contrast reached a maximum of 2.48% near =0.25. The red flux tube contrast reached a maximum of 1.59% at =0.2. These contrast values are not corrected for the filling factor. The blue curve leveled off slightly betwen =0.25 and 0.2 while the red curve showed no deviation from its linear trend. These results may provide some support for the hot wall model of facular flux tubes.  相似文献

A spectral analysis of the fluctuations of the infrared sky radiance at 10m was made at the ESO-site of La Silla in Northern Chile. The data are compared to literature. The consequences of the results on infrared observing for future large telescopes are discussed: our data suggest that in order to achieve background noise limited performance in the 10m atmospheric window chopping with frequencies of 8 Hz and amplitudes of 10 arcsec is mandatory.based on observations obtained at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile  相似文献

The stability ofL 4 and the motion aboutL 4 in the restricted problem of three bodies is investigated when there is three-to-one commensurability between the long and short periods of motion, that is, when the mass ratio has the value =0.013516.... Laboratory infrared emission and absorption spectra have been taken of terrestrial silicates, meteorites and lunar soils in the form of micrometer and sub-micrometer grains. The emission spectra were taken in a way that imitates telescopic observations. The purpose was to see which materials best simulate the 10 m astrophysical feature.The emission spectra of dunite, fayalite and Allende give a good fit to the 10 m broadband emission feature of comets Bennett and Kohoutek. A study of the effect of grain size on the presence of the 10 m emission feature of dunite shows that for particles larger than 37 m no feature is seen.The emission spectrum of the Murray meteorite, a Type 2 carbonaceous chondrite, is quite similar to the intermediate resolution spectrum of comet Kohoutek in the 10 m region. Hydrous silicates or amorphous magnesium silicates in combination with high-temperature condensates, such as olivine or anorthite, would yield spectra that match the intermediate resolution spectrum of comet Kohoutek in the 10 m region. The exact calculation of scattering and absorption by various sub-micron sized silicate spheres is presented here, using accurately determined optical constants in the wavelength range from 50 m to 0.21 m. The extinction features near 10 m and 20 m for various samples are discussed. It is found that the ratio of peak extinction at 20 m to that at 10 m is constant for small particles up tor=0.4 m, but is less for particles of radius 1 m. The ratio of maximum extinction in the ultraviolet to that at 10 m decreases with increasing particle size.  相似文献

We present an attempt for an extension of the modified Boltzmann model, which was introduced by Callebautet al. (1982) as an improvement of the polytropic models, to the case of chemically-heterogeneous stars in equilibrium, containing H and He, by proposing a density profile of the formp=C 1 T N exp (–H m(–*)/kT) +C 2 T N exp (–He m(–*)/kT. Analytical properties are derived and numerical as well as analytical arguments are presented for the conclusion that this hypothesis for a density profile imposes an almost constant chemical profile to the model as a whole, thereby making it in this form unsuited for the study of heterogeneous stars. A comparison is made with the former Boltzmann model in the homogeneous limit.  相似文献

A comparison is made between the stability criteria of Hill and that of Laplace to determine the stability of outer planetary orbits encircling binary stars. The restricted, analytically determined results of Hill's method by Szebehely and co-workers and the general, numerically integrated results of Laplace's method by Graziani and Black are compared for varying values of the mass parameter =m 2/(m 1+m 2). For 00.15, the closest orbit (lower limit of radius) an outer planet in a binary system can have and still remain stable is determined by Hill's stability criterion. For >0.15, the critical radius is determined by Laplace's stability criterion. It appears that the Graziani-Black stability criterion describes the critical orbit within a few percent for all values of .  相似文献

Infrared continuum observations of the Sun at wavelengths between 10 and 30 show a nonisothermal response of the upper photosphere to compression waves associated with the five-minute oscillations. Observations were made with four broad-band filters with effective transmission wavelengths between 10 and 26 and with a 10 aperture. Further observations at submillimeter wavelengths with a 2 aperture did not resolve oscillatory fluctuations of five-minute period.Comparisons with velocity field data of Howard (1976) suggest that the relaxation time of the photosphere exceeds (300/2) seconds at the height of formation of the 26 continuum (5000Å 10-2). The photosphere reponds to 3 mHz oscillatory motion with considerably less compression than expected for simple acoustic modes in an adiabatically responsive atmosphere, confirming the evanescent character of the five-minute oscillations.  相似文献

The concept of velocity correlation functions is introduced and applied to the calculation of cosmic ray spatial diffusion coefficients. It is assumed that the pitch angle scattering coefficient is already known from some other theory, and is reasonably well-behaved. Previous results for the coefficient for diffusion parallel to the mean field are recovered when the velocity-changing mechanism is artificially restricted to pitch angle scattering. The velocity correlation method is then applied to the more general case where there are fluctuations in the local mean field. It is found that the parallel diffusion coefficient is reduced in proportion to the amplitude of the field fluctuations, and that the ratio of the perpendicular to parallel diffusion coefficients cannot be greater than B x 2 /B 0 2 . It is shown in the appendix that the Liouville form of the scattering equation implies that the Fokker-Planck coefficients 2/t=2D and /t=D /, and that all higher-order coefficients are identically zero.  相似文献

We have produced high-resolution images of the nuclear region of M82 with SpectroCam-10, a mid-infrared instrument at the Palomar 5 m telescope. These images were taken at 11.7 m and 9.8 m with a 1m filter bandpass at the diffraction limit of 0.6 arcsec, making them the highest resolution maps yet available of M82. In addition, we have obtained high-resolution (/=2000) maps of the velocity field of the nuclear disk of M82 in the 12.81 m line emission of [NeII]. In these proceedings we present the 11.7 m image, which will appear together with the 9.8 m map and the [Ne II] spectra in a subsequent paper, now in preparation. This image shows very clearly a bridge structure joining the eastern and western clusters.  相似文献

A largely numerical study was made of families of three-dimensional, periodic, halo orbits near the collinear libration points in the restricted three-body problem. Families extend from each of the libration points to the nearest primary. They appear to exist for all values of the mass ratio , from 0 to 1. More importantly, most of the families contain a range of stable orbits. Only near L1, the libration point between the two primaries, are there no stable orbits for certain values of . In that case the stable range decreases with increasing , until it disappears at =0.0573. Near the other libration points, stable orbits exist for all mass ratios investigated between 0 and 1. On November 27, 1974, a map of the Moon was obtained at 6 cm wavelength with the 100-m-telescope in Effelsberg. The high angular and favourable temperature resolution allowed an interpretation of the observed brightness distribution. The dominant feature of the brightness distribution is the centre-to-limb variation, particularly noticeable in the direction of the poles. The exponent of the commonly adopted cos ()-law, describing the temperature variation across the lunar disk, is determined as 0.4. The North-South variation of the lunar surface temperature is estimated to be 30%; the depth of penetration (L e) of electromagnetic waves of 6 cm wavelength is found to beL e 17 m.  相似文献

We discuss imaging with arrays in the thermal IR. Aspects of the design and performance of the Golden Gopher, an infrared array camera are presented. This instrument operates in a high-background environment, for ground-based astronomical imaging from 5 to 27 m. It is built around a 20×64 element Si:As Impurity Band Conduction (IBC) device manufactured by GenCorp Aerojet Electronic Systems Division, and has a noise-equivalent flux density (NEFD) of 23.5mJy min -1/2 arcsec-2 at =10m, =1m, on the Mt. Lemmon 1.5m telescope. We present and discuss a sample of the data. In addition we discuss the design and expected performance of the Long Wavelength Spectrometer which is now under construction for the Keck telescope.  相似文献

We assume that typical interplanetary grains are fragile, aggregates of the Brownlee type, and discuss the physical and dynamical processes associated with their entry into the Jovian magnetosphere. Limiting ourselves to the equatorial plane of the planet, we show that grains traversing the outer edge of the co-rotating magnetodisc (r35R J ) are rapidly charged up to large negative potentials on both the day and the night sides. A parent grain of radiusR g 20 is electrostatically disrupted when it attains a potential of about –220 V. While the eventual potential achieved by the smallest fragments (R g 0.1 ) are controlled by the rapid field emission of electrons, those of the larger fragments (R g 1 ) are set by the plasma and photoemission currents.All the negatively charged fragments are strongly attracted towards the planet by the (radial) corotational electric field and some are stably trapped. We suggest that the sudden enhancement by about 2 orders of magnitude of the interplanetary dust flux measured by Pioneer 10, at about 30R J from Jupiter result from the combination of these two effects.The different brightness asymmetries between the leading and the trailing sides of the outer and inner Galilean satellites appear to be a natural consequence of the way the trajectories of these charged dust grains intersect these satellite surfaces. Finally, the similarity in the brightness asymmetries between the Jovian and Saturnian satellites, and our belief that they have a similar cause, leads us to the expectation that Saturn's magnetic momentM and spin , are parallel as in the case of Jupiter, with the limit of plasma co-rotation lying between the satellites Rhea and Iapetus.  相似文献

Hollow cylindrical organic particles with a mean refractive index 1.15 and radius 0.1 m, coated with a SiO2-Fe mantle of thickness 0.006 m, are shown to possess wavelength dependences of linear and circular polarization which are in good accord with astronomical data. Such particles endowed with ferromagnetic or superparamagnetic properties may be selectively aligned by the Davis-Greenstein mechanism.  相似文献

The high sensitivity of large format InSb arrays can be used to obtain deep images of the sky at 3–5 m. In this spectral range cool or highly redshifted objects (e.g. brown dwarfs and protogalaxies) which are not visible at shorter wavelengths may be observed. Sensitivity at these wavelengths in ground-based observations is severely limited by the thermal flux from the telescope and from the earth's atmosphere. The Near Infrared Faint-Object Telescope Experiment (NIFTE), a 50 cm cooled rocket-borne telescope combined with large format, high performance InSb arrays, can reach a limiting flux < 1 Jy (1) over a large field-of-view in a single flight. In comparison, ISO will require days of observation to reach a sensitivity more than one order of magnitude worse over a similar area of the sky. The deep 3–5 m images obtained by the rocket-borne telescope will assist in determining the nature of faint red objects detected by ground-based telescopes at 2 m, and by ISO at wavelengths longer than 5 m.  相似文献

We present near infrared maps of the planetary nebula IC 418 taken at 5 arc sec spatial resolution. These show an extremely compact source structure at 1.65 m, and very much broader and more elliptical emission distributions at 2.2 and 3.6 m. The possibility that the near infrared continuum derives from small grains with low thermal capacity is discussed, and synthetic spectra are derived. These indicate a very much slower variation of flux with wavelength than would be deduced for grains at unitary temperature, and imply a near infrared continuum which is significantly cooler than maximum grain temperatures. Fits to the spectrum of IC 418 suggest that peak grain temperatures may approachT p0103 K (for –2), for instance, compared to the observed colour temperature of 650 K.Finally, the relevant grains are required to be refractory and, given the large C/O ratio in this nebula, probably consist of graphite. Their mass is also required to be small, and is probably of order 2×10–7 M . This compares with the probable total mass for large dust grains of 10–4 M . Although they are both small and warm, such grains would be expected to persist over the lifetime of the nebula, and may also be responsible for various NIR band emission features.  相似文献
