The gas properties of barred and unbarred spiral galaxies are compared in two complete samples. It is found that two types of spiral galaxies do not differ from each other in atomic and molecular gas contents. On average there is 6 times more HI than H2 in spiral galaxies and the ratio MH2/MHI decreases from early to late types. The barred and unbarred spirals in general show a similar behaviors of the gas-to-luminosity relationships, but also there are certain differences between them such as correlation of two gas phases (HI and H2)for unbarred galaxies. It is suggested that different behaviors of two types galaxies are due to the higher star forming activity of barred with respect unbarred spirals. The expected values of HI and H2 gas contents have been estimated using blue and far-infrared emission. Published in Astrofizika, Vol. 43, No. 3, pp. 405-410, July–September, 2000.  相似文献

By using the SDSS spectra, we have studied the star formation properties of the nearby spiral galaxies selected from the Revised Bright Galaxy Sample, and tried to find the effect of bar structure on the star formation activity in the nuclear regions of nearby galaxies. The stellar population composition and the intensity of star formation activities of each sample galaxy are acquired by using the stellar population synthesis code—STARLIGHT, and the star formation properties of nuclear regions are compared with those of integral sample galaxies. We find that the star formation in barred spiral galaxies is more active than that of unbarred spirals, and that barred spirals have younger stellar populations.  相似文献

It is shown that the brightness of the spiral galactic nuclei at 10 depends on the Byurakan type of galaxies: the brightness is higher in the case of galaxies of types 5, 2s, 4, and 2 with optical signs of activity in comparison with galaxies of types 3 and 1 without optical signs of activity. The noted difference is larger when nonstellar emission at 10 is considered. The obtained results confirm conclusions made earlier on the activity of the nuclei of galaxies of types 5, 2s, 4, and 2.  相似文献

An analysis of radio and FIR emission in over 1500IRAS selected galaxies produces a good linear correlationbetween radio and FIR luminosity, indicating that star formationin normal field galaxies dominates the infrared luminosityin the local volume. Galaxies with clear radio-excess (definedas having at least5 times larger radio flux over expected from FIR) are identified as hosting a radio AGN, and they account for onlyabout 1% of the whole sample. This fraction increases to 10% among themore luminous galaxies with L 1.4GHz 1023 W Hz-1 (equivalently L 60m 1011 L), however. The characteristic mid-IR excess of a Seyfert nucleus is ubiquitously present amongthe radio-excess objects, suggesting that mid-IR excess isa robust tracer of an AGN despite the high mid-IR opacity. We conclude that about 30% of the luminous infrared galaxies(L 60m 1011 L) host an AGN based on themid-IR excess, and about 40% of the mid-IR excess AGNs alsohost a radio AGN. A VLA imaging survey of a distance limited sample of IR luminousgalaxies has revealed the presence of 100 kpc scale giant radioplumes in 3 out of 9 cases (Mrk 231, Mrk 273, NGC 6240). Theirlarge spatial extent, energetics, and presence of a powerful AGN in each case suggests that an AGN is the power source. Such plumesare not detected in other ultraluminous infrared galaxies which lack clear evidence for an AGN, such as Arp 220.  相似文献

The radio and xray properties of spiral galaxies with and without a bar are discussed on the basis of complete samples that we have compiled. The two types of spirals are shown not to differ from one another in emission power in the two indicated ranges. In the case of SB galaxies, the luminosities in the IR, radio, and xray ranges are closely related. The spectral indices of SB and SA galaxies in the 1.4–5 GHz range are the same, on the average. In the case of barred galaxies, however, a definite dependence is observed between the spectral index and both the IR and × ray luminosities, i.e., the spectral index increases as both luminosities increase. It is assumed that this is caused by the bar itself, which stimulates star formation in a barred galaxy. Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 41. No. 4, pp. 599–608, October–December, 1998.  相似文献

We present the first results of a survey of Blue Compact Galaxies with a 10 m array. Blue Compact Galaxies (BCGs) are dwarf galaxies experiencing an intense burst of star formation. As dwarf systems, their main characteristics is a low heavy-elements abundance. Although dust is thought to be less abundant in these galaxies than in normal spirals, the presence of a compact starburst region favors a detection in the infrared, and 10 m imaging is perfectly suited to star formation studies in BCGs since it focuses on the hottest dust inside the star-forming regions.  相似文献

The observations of the reddening of the distant galaxies and the weak diffuse radiation in the clusters of galaxies can be interpreted as a consequence of the presence of dust grains in the intergalactic medium. When allowance is made for the destruction of the grains in collision with particles of the hot gas, its lifetime is about 107–108 yr at a gas concentrationn g 10–3 cm–3. The detection of the infrared (IR) emission from the galaxy clusters might be the test for the proof of the presence of dust grains in the intergalactic medium. In this paper the estimates of the expected intensities and fluxes of IR emission for the spectral region 50–300 are presented for two galaxy clusters in Coma and Perseus. The parameters of the hot gas spatial distribution are chosen from X-ray observations. Having assumed that intergalactic dust can be ejected only from the galaxies, we used such a model for intergalactic dust grains which explains very well the interstellar dust effects. It is shown that the dust temperature, which is determined from the general energetic balance of the dust grains, can achieve some scores of degrees of Kelvin. Two models of the dust spatial distribution are considered. It is found that the maximum of IR flux for the Coma cluster lies near =100 and the same for the Perseus cluster near 50–70. The total fluxes of IR emission from these clusters are about 105–106 Jy and can be detected by modern observational methods.  相似文献

Distributions of the surface brightness and the surface color of five barred spiral galaxies expressed in the form of digital maps are presented. This is the first step to determine the composition of the components of barred spiral galaxies — bar, spiral arm, inner ring and outer ring — and to obtain an accurate picture of the dynamical model of a barred spiral galaxy. We have found that (a) the bar is redder than the spiral arm and has a color similar to that of the disk and (b) the inner ring of theSB(r) type galaxy is bluer than the bar and rather resembles the spiral arm.  相似文献

Data from the H I Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) of the southern sky in the neutral hydrogen line are used to determine the radial velocities and widths of the H I line for flat spiral galaxies of the Revised Flat-Galaxy Catalog (RFGC) seen edge-on. The sample of 103 flat galaxies detected in HIPASS is characterized by a median radial velocity of +2037 km/sec and a median width of the H I line at the level of 50% of maximum of 242 km/sec. For RFGC galaxies the 50% detection level in HIPASS corresponds to an apparent magnitude B t = 14 m .5 or an angular diameter a = 2.9. The relative number of detected galaxies increases from 2% for the morphological types Sbc and Sc to 41% for the type Sm. The median value of the ratio of hydrogen mass to total mass for RFGC galaxies is 0.079. With allowance for the average internal extinction for edge-on galaxies, <B t< = 0 m .75, the median ratio of hydrogen mass to luminosity, M H I/L B = 0.74 M /L , is typical for late-type spirals. Because of its small depth, HIPASS reveals only a few RFGC galaxies with previously unknown velocities and line widths.  相似文献

We have conducted UBVRI and Hα CCD photometry of five barred galaxies (NGC 2523, NGC 2950, NGC 3412, NGC 3945 and NGC 5383),along with SPH simulations, in order to understand the origin of young stellar populations in the nuclei of barred galaxies. The Hα emission, which is thought to be emitted by young stellar populations, is either absent or strongly concentrated in the nuclei of early-type galaxies (NGC 2950, NGC 3412 and NGC 3945),while they are observed in the nuclei and circumnuclear regions of intermediate-type galaxies with strong bars (NGC 2523 and NGC 5383).SPH simulations of realistic mass models for these galaxies show that some disc material can be driven into the nuclear region by a strong bar potential. This implies that the young stellar populations in the circumnuclear regions of barred galaxies can be formed out of such gas. The existence of nuclear dust lanes is an indication of an ongoing gas inflow and extremely young stellar populations in these galaxies, because nuclear dust lanes such as those in NGC 5383 are not long-lasting features according to our simulations. Spiral galaxies contain both ordered and chaotic orbits. In normal spirals the perturbations are weak (of order 2–10%) and most orbits are ordered. The density wave theory refers mainly to linear perturbations. Nonlinear effects appear in the outer parts of the open spirals (S_b, S_c) and produce the termination of these spirals near the 4/1 resonance. On the other hand in barred spirals the perturbations are relatively strong (of order 100%). Then the outer spirals and the envelope of the bar are composed mainly of chaotic orbits, while the main body of the bar is composed of ordered orbits. The chaotic orbits of the spiral arms of strong barred galaxies are sticky, i.e. they do not escape from the galaxy for at least a Hubble time. The forms of these spirals are delineated by the unstable manifolds of the unstable periodic orbits L_1, L_2 near the ends of the bar and of other unstable periodic orbits inside and outside corotation.  相似文献

A seventh list of objects from the BIG (Byurakan-IRAS galaxies) sample is given: 95 galaxies identified with 63 point sources from the IRAS Point Source Catalog. The identifications were based on the Digital Sky Survey (DSS), the First Byurakan Survey, blue and red maps from the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey, and infrared fluxes at 12, 25, 60, and 100 m in the region of +65° 69° and 14h00m 18h05m with an area of 96 deg2. For the identified galaxies the optical coordinates, their departures from the IR coordinates, the stellar V magnitudes, morphological types, angular sizes, and position angles were determined. The objects have optical magnitudes in the range of 13 m .8-21 m .5 and angular sizes in the range of 4-38. Finder charts from the DSS are given for these objects.  相似文献

We present an analysis of the chiral property of 667 spiral and barred spiral galaxies in the Local Supercluster (radial velocity <3 000 km s−1). The arms of a galaxy (spiral or barred spiral) can be distinguished according to their orientation (leading or trailing) relative to the direction of the rotation. We use environment of each galaxy as a subsample in order to study the chiral property of galaxies. In addition, equatorial position angle distributions of leading and trailing arm galaxies are studied. We classify our database according as their morphology, diameters, radial velocities, axial ratios and magnitudes. The distribution of trailing and leading arm galaxies in the Local Supercluster is found homogeneous. A significant dominance of either trailing or leading structures is noticed within the Virgo cluster region, suggesting that the aggregation of these structures might have already started there. The rotation axes of the galaxies in the Virgo cluster is found to lie in the equatorial plane. Chirality of galaxies is found strong for the subsamples that showed a random alignment in the equatorial position angle distribution. Possible explanations of the results will be presented.  相似文献

We study the spatial orientation of 5 169 galaxies that have radial velocity 3 000 to 5 000 km s−1. The ‘position angle–inclination’ method is used to find the spin vector and the projections of spin vector of the galaxy rotation axes. The spatial isotropic distribution is assumed to examine the non-random effects. For this, we have performed chi-square, Fourier, and auto-correlation tests. We found a random alignment of spin vectors of total galaxies with respect to the equatorial coordinate system. The spin vector projections of total galaxies is found to be oriented tangentially with respect to the equatorial center. The spiral galaxies show a similar orientation as shown by the total sample. Five subsamples of barred spiral (late-type) galaxies show a preferred alignment. However, early-type barred spirals show a random orientation. A weak morphological dependence is noticed in the subsamples of late type barred spirals. A comparison with the previous works and the possible explanation of the results will be presented.  相似文献

We report on first results of a comprehensive study of interacting andmerging processes between spiral galaxies and small satellites to investigatethe effects of such events on the disk component of spirals. Analysis ofour newly obtained photometric data of about 125 edge-on galaxiesin optical and in NIR shows that there are considerable differencesbetween interacting and non-interacting galaxies concerning their absolutedisk scale parameters as well as their ratios (h/z 0).In comparison with normal spirals, the average heating factor perpendicular tothe disk plane of mergers is about 1.5. The most striking feature of thedistributions of (h/z 0) for both normal galaxies and mergers, is thetotal lack of typical flat disk axis ratios (i.e. that of late type ones)of (h/z 0) > 6 for mergers. A sample of giant Sb-Sc spiral galaxies for which there are highly accurate and extended rotation curves was considered. Having divided the galaxies into three groups as a function of the overall spatial density of luminosity (mass) within 0.5 Mpc ( L ), we investigated the characteristics of the rotation curves as functions of L . It turned out that for such massive galaxies, the shape of the rotation curve (the logarithmic gradient) and the Tully-Fisher relation do not depend on the overall space environment. The only difference is that the rotation curves of galaxies in regions with high L can be traced out to smaller relative distances from the nucleus, on the average. This may be related to destruction of the outer regions of their gaseous disks in gravitational interaction with surrounding galaxies.  相似文献

Until recently far infrared (FIR) observations of galaxies were limited to about a dozen bright and/or active galaxies. New photometric data has become available from Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) on 33 galaxies (most of them faint) from IRAS Circular Nos. 1, 2, and 3 The FIR spectra of these galaxies are similar. The far infrared fluxF FIR in the wavelength interval 9–118 m of the brighter galaxies is seen to be correlated with the integrated optical magnitudeB T 0 . The 12 and 25 m fluxes of these galaxies exhibit the same dependence onB T 0 as the 10 and 21 m fluxes from Seyferts and other emission-line galaxies. This suggests that the galaxies detected by IRAS are some type of active galaxies in accord with the high percentage of these galaxies predicted by Lock and Rowan-Robinson (1983).  相似文献

The morphologies of the 96 dwarf (M(B) -17m) galaxies in the Markarian catalog are determined from the digitized Schmidt plates obtained for the construction of the Hubble Space Telescope Guide Star Catalog. The fraction of double nucleus galaxies within the dwarf Markarian galaxies is determined to be twice that found for all galaxies in the Markarian catalog. In addition to the 12 previously known cases, four definite and two probable galaxies with double nuclei are identified. The fraction of dwarf Markarian galaxies with bright star forming regions is found to be twice that of Virgo cluster dwarf galaxies. No Elliptical galaxies are found in the sample. Galaxies with blue compact dwarf and S0 morphologies are more often found to contain unresolved regions of UV excess emission. Dwarf Markarian galaxies with different morphological structures and spectral classes are found to have similar FIR properties.  相似文献
