We consider a model of cyclic brightness variations in a young star with a low-mass (q = M 2/M 1 ≤ 0.1) companion that accretes matter from the remnants of a protostellar cloud (circumbinary disk). We assume that the orbit of the companion is circular and that its plane does not coincide with the disk plane. We have computed grids of hydrodynamic models for such a binary by the SPH method based on which we have investigated the circumstellar extinction variations produced by the streams of matter and density waves excited in the circumbinary disk by the orbital motion of the companion. We show that, depending on the inclination and orientation of the binary’s line of nodes relative to the observer, the brightness of the primary component can undergo various (in shape and depth) oscillations with a period equal to the orbital one. In contrast to the models with coplanar circular orbits, the accretion rate onto the components of a binary with a noncoplanar orbit depends on the orbital phase. The results of our computations can be used to study the cyclic activity of UX Ori stars and young eclipsing binaries with anomalously long eclipses.  相似文献

The post-RLOF structure of the secondary after relaxation towards thermal equilibrium is calculated for a large grid of massive close binaries evolving through an early caseB of mass transfer. The initial primary masses range between 15 and 30M o, the initial mass ratio between 0.3 and 0.9. The possibility that matter leaves the system during RLOF is included using an additional free parameter . The calculations are based on the accretion and relaxation properties of massive accretion stars. Conclusions on the post-RLOF secondaries are presented in function of , M1i, andq i , in the form of tables and figures on the post-RLOF positions in the HR diagram, the final masses, mass ratios, chemical profiles and the remaining core-hydrogen burning lifetime. It is found that all systems starting from initial conditions in the grid specified above evolve sequentially, i.e. the primary evolves into a supernova before the end of core H burning of the secondary. No WR+WR systems are encountered. The results are used to determine the masses of ten double lined spectroscopic WR+OB binaries. Most of the WR masses are in the range 8–14M o, although the sample is subject to some important selection effects. One WR+OB binary has a WR mass between 4 and 5M o. It is argued that mass determinations based only on the spectral type of the secondary yield WR masses that are too high up to a factor two.  相似文献

A young binary system is considered, having a mass ratio of components M 2/M 1 1, in which the low-velocity part of the stellar wind of the low-mass component (the so-called disk wind) can be partially captured by the gravitation of the primary component. It is shown that a large-scale redistribution of matter and angular momentum between the inner and outer parts of the gas-dust disk surrounding the binary system occurs as a result, with a consequent increase in the rate of accretion onto the primary component. In cases in which the orbital eccentricity of the secondary component is nonzero, modulation of the rate of accretion onto the primary component should be observed with a period equal to the orbital period, while in the case of a highly elongated orbit the mass accretion acquires a pulsed character. Since dust may be present in the disk wind from the secondary component, the capture of stellar wind will result in an increase in the effective geometrical thickness of the gas-dust disk. For this reason, the infrared (IR) emission excesses of such stars (especially in the near-IR range) and their intrinsic polarization can be considerably greater than in the case of a single star surrounded by a circumstellar disk of the same mass, and a periodic component may also be present in their behavior with time. Moreover, because of disruption of the axial symmetry in the dust distribution in the vicinity of the young binary system, the orbital period may also be present in its brightness variations. The role of these effects in the physics of young stars is discussed.  相似文献

We consider a model of a young binary with a low-mass secondary component. Mass accretion from the remnants of the protostellar cloud onto the binary components is assumed to take place in accordance with current models; i.e., it proceeds mainly onto the low-mass component. The accretion is accompanied by mass outflow (disk wind), whose low-velocity component can be partially captured by the primary component. As a result, an asymmetric common envelope is formed. Its densest part is involved in the orbital motion of the secondary and can periodically shield the primary component of the binary from the observer. Assuming a standard dust-to-gas ratio for the disk wind (1: 100), we calculated the possible photometric effects from such eclipses and showed that they could be observed even at moderate accretion rates onto the low-mass binary component, ∼10−8–10−9 M per year. In this case, the parameters of the minima depend on the model of the disk wind, on the ratio of its characteristic velocity to the orbital velocity of the secondary, and on its orbital inclination to the line of sight. These results can form the basis for interpreting a wide range of phenomena observed in young stars, such as the activity cycles in UX Ori stars, the unusually broad minima in some young eclipsing systems, etc., and for searching for substellar objects and massive protoplanets. In addition, the peripheral parts of the gas and dust disk around a young binary can fall within the shadow zone produced by the opaque part of the common envelope. In such cases, a shadow from the common envelope must be observed on the disk; this shadow must move over the disk following the orbital motion of the low-mass component. Detection and investigation of such structures in the images of protoplanetary disks may become a method of searching for protoplanets and studying binaries at early stages of their evolution.  相似文献

New Claret evolutionary model-tracks, constructed for the first time for studying close binary systems (CBS) including tidal evolution constants, are used to determine the age of 112 eclipsing-variable stars in the Svechnikov-Perevozkina catalog by the method of isochrones. There is some interest in comparing the calculated ages with previous estimates obtained for these same close binary systems using evolutionary modeltracks for individual stars taking their mass loss into account. A correlation of the ages of the principal and secondary components is noted, which is most marked for massive close binaries with principal components having masses M1 ≥ 3 M. A rejuvenating effect is found to occur for the systems studied here as calculated on the new tracks; it is most distinct for low-mass close binaries with a total mass M1 + M2 ≤ 3.5 M and is predicted theoretically in terms of magnetic braking. The calculated broadband grid of isochrones, from zero-age main-sequence (ZAMS) to the age of the galaxy, can be used for estimating the ages of close binaries from other catalogs. Ages are given for the 112 eclipsing-variable close binaries with detached components lying within the main sequence. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 50, No. 2, pp. 299–312 (May 2007).  相似文献

The evolution of close binary systems was followed for ten systems with the initial mass of the primary in the range 1–4M and with different initial mass ratios and initial separations. A brief discussion of the evolution of the contact component is presented for two separate cases: when the primary reaches its Roche lobe during central hydrogen burning (case A) and after the exhaustion of hydrogen in the center (case B).The models obtained are compared with observed semi-detached systems separately for massive (with total mass greater than 5M ) and low mass (with total mass below 4M ) binaries. It is shown that the contact components of the observed massive binaries are probably burning hydrogen in the core. On the contrary, the majority of contact components of the observed low-mass binaries are burning hydrogen in the shell. The observed distribution of such binaries as a function of different luminosity excesses of contact components seems to indicate that their origin is connected with case A rather than with case B.  相似文献

We consider a model for the cyclic activity of young binary stars that accrete matter from the remnants of a protostellar cloud. If the orbit of such a binary system is inclined at a small angle to the line of sight, then the streams of matter and the density waves excited in the circumbinary disk can screen the primary component of the binary from the observer. To study these phenomena by the SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics) method, we have computed grids of hydrodynamic models for binary systems based on which we have constructed the light curves as a function of the orbital phase. The main emphasis is on investigating the properties of the brightness oscillations. Therefore, the model parameters were varied within the following ranges: the component mass ratio q = M 2: M 1 = 0.2–0.5 and the eccentricity = 0–0.7. The parameter that defined the binary viscosity was also varied. We adopted optical grain characteristics typical of circumstellar dust. Our computations have shown that bimodal oscillations are excited in binaries with eccentric orbits, provided that the binary components do not differ too much in mass. In this case, the ratios of the periods and amplitudes of the bimodal oscillations and their shape depend strongly on the inclination of the binary plane and its orientation relative to the observer. Our analysis shows that the computed light curves can be used in interpreting the cyclic activity of UX Ori stars.  相似文献

The investigation of the angular momentum vs mass relation for binary stars is completed with a study of the 847 systems contained in theFourth Catalog of Orbits of Visual Binary Stars. Because bothJ andM of a visual binary depend steeply on the distance to the system (5th and 3rd powers, respectively), and many of the distances are not well known, the study makes use of an auxiliary parameterR which is independent of distance and proportional toJM –5/3.R appears to be uncorrelated withM for the 789 systems for which both can be determined. The non-correlation implies thatJ M 5/3, expected from Kepler's third law, provides a better fit to the visual binaries than doesJ M 2, predicted by some more complex considerations. The distribution functionf(q=M 2/M1) of mass ratios for the visual binaries results as a byproduct of the investigation. It peaks extremely sharply towardq=1.0 (much more so than for spectroscopic binaries). Because most visual binaries are wide enough to consist of stars that condensed independently (and so that can be thought of as chosen at random from an initial mass function), one expects the realf(q) to rise toward low ratios. Observational selection against the discovery and study of systems with large magnitude differences between the components must be very large indeed to account for the discrepancy between expectation and observation. The alternative is a mechanism for formation of wide binaries that favours equal components. The distribution of mass ratios for eclipsing binaries is given in an appendix. It peaks strongly atq=0.6–0.75 and largely reflects processes of angular momentum, mass, and energy exchange between the stars in contact systems.  相似文献

The remaining core hydrogen burning lifetime after case B of mass transfer of the secondary (mass gaining) component in a medium mass close binary star is estimated, for mediummass binaries with primaries in the mass range 5M to 9M . From the comparison of this quantity with the helium burning time-scale of the remnant primary a critical mass ratioq c is derived such that for larger values ofq, mass transfer from the secondary towards the primary starts before the latter has evolved into a white dwarf. Consequences for the advanced stages of medium mass binaries are discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a close binary system consisting of a compact star and a optical Main-Sequence star which fills its critical Roche lobe and transfers matter through the inner Lagrangian pointL 1 toward the compact object. We use the Hill's problem as the dynamical model of the binaries. The following binaries are calculated by Duncanet al.'s mapping approximation: RY Per, RZ Sct, RS Vul, and Tau. Figures 3–6 show that the trajectories of accretion disk particles in the binaries. The relation between the dimensionless semi-major axis and times of conjunctionN are presented in Figures 7–10.This work was supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China.  相似文献

In this paper we calculate the number of close binaries formed during the evolution process of a globular cluster core. The globular cluster core is assumed to contain a massive black hole at its center. We show that the central black hole can drive binaries formation in the core and the rate of binaries formation depends on the mass of the black hole at its center. When the massM of the black hole is between 102 M and 3×103 M , there will be a few binaries formed. When the mass of the black hole is 4×103 M M6×103 M , the number of binary star formation will suddenly increase with a jump to the maximum value 58. When the mass of the black hole is 7×103 M M9×103 M , the number of binary star will immediately decrease. Whether cluster X-ray is produced mainly by the central black hole or by binaries in the core depends on the mass of the central black hole. Therefore, two cases arise: namely, black hole accretion domination and binaries radiation domination. We do think that we cannot exclude the possibility of the existence of a central black hole even when binary radiation characteristics have been observed in globular cluster X-ray sources.  相似文献

Results of photometric and spectroscopic studies for the new eclipsing cataclysmic variable star HBHA 4705-03 with an orbital period of 0.1718 days are presented. Its spectrum exhibits hydrogen and helium emission lines. The Doppler maps constructed from hydrogen lines and the He II λ 4686 line show that the regions near the inner Lagrangian point are the main source of emission in these lines, while the maps constructed from He I lines suggest the presence of an accretion disk around the primary. The masses of the components (M WD = 0.54 ± 0.10M andM RD = 0.45 ± 0.05 M ) and the orbital inclination of the system (i = 71.8° ± 0.7°) have been determined from observational data using well-known relations for close binaries and cataclysmic variable stars.  相似文献

From a search through the literature 174 close binaries with known absolute dimensions have been sampled. Distinction is made between systems before and after mass exchange. Mass, period and mass ratio distributions and relations of the group of unevolved binaries (i.e., prior to mass exchange) are transformed into corresponding distributions and relations of evolved binaries. The transformations are based upon theM 1f=g(M 1f) relation derived from an extended set of published theoretical computations of the evolution of close binaries. From this relation the following characteristics of the system after mass exchange are computed:M 1f,M 2f (andq f),P f. Five different modes of mass transfer were applied for the computation of the values ofP f andM 2f. The variation of the period was calculated using the formalism given by Vanbeverenet al. (1979). The results are compared to the observations of binary systems after mass exchange, and are discussed together with an analysis of the effect of several selection effects present in the distributions. The main conclusion is that, during mass exchange in close binaries, more than 50% of the mass is lost to the system in the process of transfer, removing a large amount of angular momentum. This research is supported by the National Foundation of Collective Fundamental Research of Belgium (F.K.F.O.) under No. 2.9009.79.  相似文献

The problem of the survival of a low-mass secondary orbiting a primary that becomes a planetary nebula is studied. The values of the mass of the primary are 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0M ; the values of the mass of the secondary 0.001M , 0.01M and 0.1M . The orbital decay and mass of the secondary due to accretion and gravitational drag in the common envelope are presented. The possible application of the results to V471 Tau, UU Sge, WZ Sge and the Sun-Jupiter system are discussed.  相似文献

The properties of the hydrogen burning shell in the envelope of an accreting neutron star have been studied for a range of mass accretion rates, neutron star radii, and metal abundances of the accreted matter. It is found that the hydrogen burning shells lie at densities ranging from 105–6×106 gm cm–3. For mass accretion rates in excess ofM c2 hydrogen and helium burn together. ForM c1MM c2, the hydrogen burning shell is stabilized by the limited CNO cycle. Implications of these results to the X-ray burst phenomena are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Recent observations show that the measured rates of star formation in the early universe are insufficient to produce re-ionization, and therefore, another source of ionizing photons is required. In this Letter, we examine the possibility that these can be supplied by the fast accretion shocks formed around the cores of the most massive haloes (10.5<log M/M <12) on spatial scales of order 1 kpc. We model the detailed physics of these fast accretion shocks, and apply these to a simple 1-D spherical hydrodynamic accretion model for baryonic infall in dark matter halos with an Einasto density distribution. The escape of UV photons from these halos is delayed by the time taken to reach the critical accretion shock velocity for escape of UV photons; 220 km s−1, and by the time it takes for these photons to ionize the surrounding baryonic matter in the accretion flow. Assuming that in the universe at large the baryonic matter tracks the dark matter, we can estimate the epoch of re-ionization in the case that accretion shocks act alone as the source of UV photons. We find that 50% of the volume (and 5-8% of the mass) of the universe can be ionized by z∼7–8. The UV production rate has an uncertainty of a factor of about 5 due to uncertainties in the cosmological parameters controlling the development of large scale structure. Because our mechanism is a steeply rising function of decreasing redshift, this uncertainty translates to a re-ionization redshift uncertainty of less than ±0.5. We also find that, even without including the UV photon production of stars, re-ionization is essentially complete by z∼5.8. Thus, fast accretion shocks can provide an important additional source of ionizing photons in the early universe.  相似文献

The stationary two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic solution for the accretion of the matter without pressure into a gravitating centre of a black hole is obtained. It is assumed that the magnetic field far from the collapsed star is homogeneous and its influence on the flow is negligible. Around the star, at the plane perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field, the dense quasistationary disc is formed, the structure of which in a large extent is determined by dissipation processes. The structure is calculated for (a) a laminar disc with the Coulomb mechanism of dissipation; and (b) a turbulent disc. The estimations of the parameters of the shock which result from the infall of the matter onto the disc are given. In the last section the numerical estimation and approximate character of the radiation spectrum of the disc and the shock are obtained for two cases of 10M and 105 M . The luminosity of collapsed objects withM=10M appears to be about solar, thus its observation is possibly only at the distances less than 300–1000 pc. The collapsed objects in the Galaxy withM=105 M could constitute very bright sources in spectral regions from optical up to X-ray. The spectra of a laminar and a turbulent disc for 10M black hole are very different. The laminar disc radiates primarily in the ultraviolet. The turbulent disc radiates a large part of its flux in the infrared. Therefore, one cannot exclude the possibility that some of the galactic infrared star-like sources are individual black holes in the accretion state.  相似文献

The orbital period variations of the Algol-type semidetached binary UW Vir are analyzed. It is shown that in addition to a long-term rapid increase (dP/dt = + 1.37 × 10−6 day/year), its orbit period has a variation with the period of 62.3 years. Based on the basic physical parameters given by Brancewicz and Dworak in 1980, the physical mechanisms causing the orbital period variations are investigated. The analysis indicates that the periodical variation of orbital period can be interpreted by the light-travel time effect due to the presence of a third body with the mass of M3 ≥ 0.94 M. As no observational information has been reported for this tertiary component, it might be a compact object (e.g., a white dwarf). The long-term increase of orbital period can be explained in terms of the mass transfer from the secondary to the primary component (dM2/dt = 1.43 × 10−7 M/year). This is in agreement with the semidetached configuration of the system with a lobe-filling secondary component. But according to the evolution theory of binaries, the Algol-type semidetached binary UW Vir should be at the evolutionary stage of slow mass transfer on the nuclear-reaction timescale of the secondary component. However, the analysis shows that the timescale for the periodical variation of orbital period is much shorter than the nuclear-reaction timescale of the secondary component, but close to the thermodynamic timescale of the secondary. This reveals that: (1) This binary system is at the evolutionary stage of rapid mass transfer on the thermodynamic timescale of the secondary component; or (2) The circumstellar matter of the system makes a contribution to the rapid increase of orbital period via the angular momentum transfer.  相似文献

In a number of the most luminous ULXs (those with LX ∼ 1040 erg s−1) in nearby galaxies, observations with XMM-Newton and Chandra are revealing evidence which suggests that these ULXs may harbor intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs). The detection of accretion disk spectral components with temperatures 5–10 times lower than the temperatures observed in stellar-mass black hole binaries near to their Eddington limit may be particularly compelling evidence for IMBH primaries, since TM−1/4 for disks around black holes. In some sources, X-ray timing diagnostics also hint at IMBHs. Evidence for IMBHs in a subset of the most luminous ULXs, a discussion of the robustness of this evidence and alternatives to the IMBH interpretation, and prospects for better determining the nature of these sources in the future, are presented in this work.  相似文献

The eclipsing binary system Epsilon Aurigae, containing an unseen component, is discussed on the basis of its orbital elements. The masses of the components can be approximately 4M and 1M , respectively. It is shown that there is no reason to reject a low-mass model. An opaque elongated eclipsing body is briefly discussed as one of the components which is an accretion disc surrounding a central Main-Sequence star.  相似文献
