V390 Aur is classified as a G8 spectral class active single giant by Fekel and Marshall (1991). Multi‐site cooperative high‐speed photoelectric monitoring was carried out for it in the period 1998‐2003 as part of a program developed in Bulgaria recently to study chromospherically active evolved stars. Astronomers from Greece and Ukraine joined the flare activity study of V390 Aur in 2000. As a result, several flares with a duration from seconds to minutes were detected on this star at 3 observatories. Taking into account all the events detected, the flare rate of the star is estimated to 0.205 flares per hour. Comparison with the active dwarfs AD Leo and EV Lac indicates that the flare rate of V390 Aur is lower than that of AD Leo but comparable with the well‐known flare star EV Lac. The results of U -filter flare monitoring of the binary flare star FL Vir = Wolf 424 is presented. 57 flares with energies between  2 × 1028  and  2 × 1031 erg  were recorded in 20 h of observation. The properties of flare occurrence and flare time-scales are analysed, and the flare activity level in 1980 April is determined to be   L f( U ) = 8.0 × 1026 erg s−1  . This is larger than previously published results and may indicate a variation in the flare activity level on a time-scale of years. An analysis of existing data indicates that the flare activity level correlates with the relative orbital positions of the stars.  相似文献

We use I -band imaging to perform a variability survey of the 13-Myr-old cluster h Per. We find a significant fraction of the cluster members to be variable. Most importantly, we find that variable members lie almost entirely on the convective side of the gap in the cluster sequence between fully convective stars and those which have a radiative core. This result is consistent with a scenario in which the magnetic field changes topology when the star changes from being fully convective to one containing a radiative core. When the star is convective, the magnetic field appears dominated by large-scale structures, resulting in global-size spots that drive the observed variability. For those stars with radiative cores, we observe a marked absence of variability due to spots, which suggests a switch to a magnetic field dominated by smaller-scale structures, resulting in many smaller spots and thus less apparent variability. This implies that wide field variability surveys may only be sensitive to fully convective stars. On the one hand, this reduces the chances of picking out young groups (since the convective stars are the lower mass and therefore fainter objects), but conversely the absolute magnitude of the head of the convective sequence provides a straightforward measure of age for those groups which are discovered.  相似文献

A new photometric and spectroscopic survey of the star formation region (SFR) CMa R1 is described. In a sample of 165 stars brighter than 13th mag, 88 stars were found to be probable members of the SFR. They are defined as early-type stars with E ( B − V )0.16 mag, which corresponds to a distance of about 1 kpc. 74 of the probable members are B stars. 19 stars are possibly associated with an IRAS point source. We derive a most probable distance of 1050±150 pc to the association. It appears that about 80 candidate members are pre-main-sequence stars with ages lower than 6 million years, while the main sequence extends over 6.0–7.6 mag, which is consistent with star formation starting about 8 million years ago and continuing until at least half a million years ago. Two bright B stars in the association (GU CMa and FZ CMa) seem to be much older and probably do not originate from the same star formation episode. The star formation efficiency appears to increase roughly monotonically with time up to half a million years ago. From our data, we conclude that only a minor fraction of the stars has been created through the scenario suggested by Herbst & Assousa, in which the members of CMa R1 form by compression of ambient material by a supernova shock wave. An extensive search for candidate members with H α emission did not reveal new Herbig Ae/Be candidates, so that the number of stars in this class seems to be limited to four: Z CMa, LkH α 218, LkH α 220 and possibly HD 53367.  相似文献

We present a new flare star, which was discovered during our survey on a selected field at the edge of the Pleiades cluster. The field was observed in the period 2007–2010 with three different CCD‐cameras at the University Observatory Jena with telescopes from 25 to 90 cm. The flare duration is almost one hour with an amplitude in the R‐band of about 1.08 mag. The location of the flare star in a color‐magnitude diagram is consistent with age and distance of the Pleiades. In the optical PSF of the flare star there are two 2MASS objects (unresolved in most images in the optical Jena PSF), so it is not yet known which one of them is responsible for this flare. The BVRIJHK colors yield spectral types of M1 and M2 with extinction being Av = 0.231 ± 0.024 mag and Av = 0.266 ± 0.020 for those two stars, consistent with the Pleiades cluster (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We describe here the results of a photometric time-sequence survey of the globular cluster M3 (NGC 5272), in a search for contact and detached eclipsing binary stars. We have discovered only one likely eclipsing binary and one SX Phe-type star in spite of monitoring 4077 stars with V  < 20.0 and observing 25 blue straggler stars (BSS). The newly identified SX Phe star, V237, shows a light curve with a variable amplitude. Variable V238 shows variability either with a period of 0.49 d or with a period of 0.25 d. On the cluster colour–magnitude diagram, the variable occupies a position a few hundredths of a magnitude to the blue of the base of the red giant branch. V238 is a likely descendant of a binary blue straggler.   As a side result we obtained high-quality data for 42 of the previously known RR Lyrae variables, including 33 of Bailey type ab, seven type c and two double-mode pulsators. We used equations that relate the physical properties of RRc stars to their pulsation periods and Fourier parameters in order to derive masses, luminosities, temperatures and helium parameters for five of the RRc stars. We also tested equations that relate the [Fe/H], M V and temperature of RRab stars to pulsation period and Fourier parameters. We derived [Fe/H]= −1.42 in good agreement with spectroscopic determinations.  相似文献

The characteristics of two stars, 25 Sex and HD 21699, as additional candidates for the sample of magnetic stars belonging to superclusters, are discussed. For 25 Sex, which was already accepted as a probable member of the Hyades supercluster in a previous study, arguments supporting the view that this star indeed is a magnetic star are presented. In the case of HD 21699, the radial velocity derived from our observations is not inconsistent with membership. But from the determinations of its proper motion found in the literature, this star cannot be regarded as a probable member of the α Per cluster. On the basis of recent evolutionary models, all the well established Ap cluster members appear to be close to the end of their main-sequence life. This suggests that A stars possibly become magnetic at the end of core hydrogen burning.  相似文献

The existence of older stars within a young star cluster can be interpreted to imply that star formation occurs on time-scales longer than a free-fall time of a pre-cluster cloud core. Here, the idea is explored that these older stars are not related to the star formation process forming the young star cluster but rather that the orbits of older field stars are focused by the collapsing pre-cluster cloud core. Two effects appear: the focusing of stellar orbits leads to an enhancement of the density of field stars in the vicinity of the centre of the young star cluster; and due to the time-dependent potential of the forming cluster some of these stars can get bound gravitationally to the cluster. These stars exhibit similar kinematical properties to the newly formed stars and cannot be distinguished from them on the basis of radial velocity or proper motion surveys. Such contaminations may lead to a wrong apparent star formation history of a young cluster. In the case of the ONC, the theoretical number of gravitationally bound older low-mass field stars agrees with the number of observed older low-mass stars.  相似文献

We report the results of our search for magnetic fields in a sample of 16 field Be stars, the binary emission‐line B‐type star υ Sgr, and in a sample of fourteen members of the open young cluster NGC3766 in the Carina spiral arm. The sample of cluster members includes Be stars, normal B‐type stars and He‐strong/He‐weak stars. Nine Be stars have been studied with magnetic field time series obtained over ∼1 hour to get an insight into the temporal behaviour and the correlation of magnetic field properties with dynamical phenomena taking place in Be star atmospheres. The spectropolarimetric data were obtained at the European Southern Observatory with the multi‐mode instrument FORS1 installed at the 8m Kueyen telescope. We detect weak photospheric magnetic fields in four field Be stars, HD 62367, μ Cen, o Aqr, and ε Tuc. The strongest longitudinal magnetic field, 〈Bz〉 = 117 ± 38 G, was detected in the Be star HD 62367. Among the Be stars studied with time series, one Be star, λ Eri, displays cyclic variability of the magnetic field with a period of 21.12 min. The binary star υ Sgr, in the initial rapid phase of mass exchange between the two components with strong emission lines in the visible spectrum, is a magnetic variable star, probably on a timescale of a few months. The maximum longitudinal magnetic field 〈Bz〉 = –102 ± 10 G at MJD 54333.018 was measured using hydrogen lines. The cluster NGC3766 seems to be extremely interesting, where we find evidence for the presence of a magnetic field in seven early B‐type stars out of the observed fourteen cluster members (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We present the results of a photometric study of X-ray-active weak-lined T Tauri (WTT) stars in the η Chamaeleontis star cluster. Multi-epoch V -band photometric monitoring during 1999 and 2000 of the 10 X-ray-active WTT stars found that all were variable in one or both years, with periods ascribed to rotational modulation of starspots. Comparison between the rotational and X-ray properties of these objects indicates the saturation level,     observed in other studies of X-ray-active pre-main-sequence stars, persists in the η Cha stars from the slow- to the fast-rotator regimes. Cousins VRI photometry of the WTT stars has enabled us to investigate further the photometric properties of these stars. The stars appear sufficiently coeval to distinguish near-equal-mass binaries within the sample. A new Hertzsprung–Russell diagram for these objects suggests ages of 4–9 Myr for M-type RECX primaries using the tracks of D'Antona & Mazzitelli.  相似文献

We report observations of the He  i λ 5876 (D3) line in the late A- and early F-type stars in the Pleiades and Alpha Persei star clusters used to determine chromospheric activity levels. This represents the first sample of young stars in this temperature range with chromospheric activity measurements. We find the same average activity level in the young early F stars as in Hyades-age stars and field stars. In addition, the young star sample shows the same large star-to-star variation in activity as seen in the older stars. Thus, as a whole, chromospheric activity in this photospheric temperature range remains the same over nearly a factor of 100 in stellar age (50 Myr to 3 Gyr), in striking contrast to the behaviour of later-type stars. In the five late A stars we find three certain detections of D3 and one likely detection. This includes the bluest star yet observed with a chromospheric D3 line, Pleiades star HII 1362 at ( B − V )0=0.22, making it one of the earliest stars with an observed chromosphere. The late A stars have D3 equivalent widths comparable to the weakest early F stars. However, when comparing D3 measurements in the young late A stars with older late A stars, we find evidence for a slight decrease in activity with age based on the large number of non-detections in the older stars. We find an apparently linear relationship between the activity upper limit and B − V over our entire range of B − V . Extrapolated blueward, this relationship predicts that the chromospheric D3 line would disappear for all stars at B − V ≈0.13.  相似文献

We present follow-up infrared photometry for a sample of low-mass and very low-mass stars in the Praesepe open cluster. Our sample is selected from two sources: (i) 90 stars selected from the Hambly et al. photometric and proper-motion survey of Praesepe; (ii) 17 stars selected from the CCD imaging survey presented by Pinfield et al. We investigate cluster membership using infrared colour–magnitude and colour–colour diagrams. We find 81 likely and two possible members in the Hambly et al. sample, in line with predictions. Contamination in the Pinfield et al. sample is higher, and we find nine probable cluster members. We investigate the non-grey models of Baraffe et al., which are found to be in good agreement with the data. Multiplicity in Praesepe is also examined, and we find the multiple star fraction to be 0.51 from analysis of the I , I − K diagram. We investigate individual object masses, and find that the faintest candidate cluster members have masses close to the substellar limit.  相似文献

We study the X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) behaviour of the flare star Wolf 630AB (V1054 Oph, Gl 644AB, HD 152751) using the ROSAT all-sky survey data from 1990 August. The simultaneous X-ray and EUV observations revealed a complex and unusual series of interplay. Indeed, the star was in a state of almost continuous flare activity for the two days of the X-ray observations. We saw a total of five X-ray flares (plus a subflare) and at least as many flares were also seen in the EUV data.
We suggest that the series of flares observed on Wolf 630AB originated in a single (probably complex) active region and illustrate, in a unique way, the evolution of flare activity in the stellar corona of a very active dMe star.  相似文献

We present optical spectra of four intermediate-mass candidate young stellar objects that have often been classified as Herbig Ae/Be stars. Typical Herbig Ae/Be emission features are not present in the spectra of these stars. Three of them, HD 36917, HD 36982 and HD 37062, are members of the young Orion nebula cluster (ONC). This association constrains their ages to be ≲1 Myr. The lack of appreciable near-infrared excess in them suggests the absence of hot dust close to the central star. However, they do possess significant amounts of cold and extended dust as revealed by the large excess emission observed at far-infrared wavelengths. The fractional infrared luminosities  ( L ir/ L )  and the dust masses computed from IRAS fluxes are systematically lower than those found for Herbig Ae/Be stars but higher than those for Vega-like stars. These stars may thus represent the youngest examples of the Vega phenomenon known so far. In contrast, the other star in our sample, HD 58647, is more likely to be a classical Be star, as is evident from the low   L ir/ L   , the scarcity of circumstellar dust, the low polarization, the presence of H α emission and near-infrared excess, and the far-infrared spectral energy distribution consistent with free–free emission similar to other well-known classical Be stars.  相似文献

We present high-resolution echelle spectroscopy of 20 stars in 16 systems catalogued as members of the TW Hydrae association, and 16 stars identified as possible new members. We have calibrated the range of coronal and chromospheric activity expected for such young stars as a function of spectral type by combining our observations with literature data for field and open cluster stars. We also compute space motions for TWA members and candidate members with proper motion measurements, using two techniques to estimate distances to stars lacking direct trigonometric parallax measurements. The mean space motion of the four TWA members with known parallaxes is  ( U , V , W : −10.0, −17.8, −4.6) km s−1  . 14 of the candidates have properties inconsistent with cluster membership; the remaining two are potential new members, although further observations are required to confirm this possibility.  相似文献

The central part of the Cygnus OB2 association was searched for the presence of short-period hot pulsators. Out of 16 O-type stars in the field, five turned out to be variable. None of the O-type variables showed short-period variations characteristic for the β Cephei-type stars. However, two β Cephei stars were found among the early B-type members of the association. Their pulsation periods are too long to be in agreement with the average association age. We note that the discrepancy can be explained by non-coeval star formation, which was already suggested by other authors from the investigation of the colour–magnitude diagrams of the association.   We found 29 new variables in all fields searched by us. About half of these are Cygnus OB2 members. By means of Hα photometry, we confirmed the presence of Hα emission in two stars and found one new Be star. A weak Hα emission is probably present in all observed O-type supergiants and giants. We also give the new BVRI Hα photometry for almost 300 stars. This multicolour photometry is used to determine a dereddened colour–magnitude diagram for the association and make a reddening map of the observed field. The extinction in the field, expressed as the total absorption in the Johnson V filter, A v , ranges from 4.1 to 7.0 mag; the average A V amounts to 5.8 mag. One O-type star is probably a background object.  相似文献

This is the first paper of a series aimed at studying the properties of late-type members of young stellar kinematic groups. We concentrate our study on classical young moving groups such as the Local Association (Pleiades moving group,     , IC 2391 supercluster (35 Myr), Ursa Major group (Sirius supercluster, 300 Myr), and Hyades supercluster (600 Myr), as well as on recently identified groups such as the Castor moving group (200 Myr). In this paper we compile a preliminary list of single late-type possible members of some of these young stellar kinematic groups. Stars are selected from previously established members of stellar kinematic groups based on photometric and kinematic properties as well as from candidates based on other criteria such as their level of chromospheric activity, rotation rate and lithium abundance. Precise measurements of proper motions and parallaxes taken from the Hipparcos Catalogue, as well as from the Tycho-2 Catalogue, and published radial velocity measurements are used to calculate the Galactic space motions ( U , V , W ) and to apply Eggen's kinematic criteria in order to determine the membership of the selected stars to the different groups. Additional criteria using age-dating methods for late-type stars will be applied in forthcoming papers of this series. A further study of the list of stars compiled here could lead to a better understanding of the chromospheric activity and their age evolution, as well as of the star formation history in the solar neighbourhood. In addition, these stars are also potential search targets for direct imaging detection of substellar companions.  相似文献

We present time-series B , V photometry of NGC 6229, obtained with the purpose of providing the first extensive CCD variability study of this cluster. As a result, we were able to obtain periods for all NGC 6229 variables, with the exception of five stars from the candidate list of Borissova et al. located very close to the cluster centre. Two stars suspected to be variables by Carney, Fullton and Trammell are first-overtone RR Lyrae (RRc) stars, whereas seven of the 12 candidates of Borissova et al. are confirmed variables – three of them being fundamental RR Lyrae (RRab) pulsators, two first-overtone pulsators, one an eclipsing binary (most likely an Algol system) and one a bright star whose variability status could not be satisfactorily determined. A new image subtraction method (ISM) suggested by Alard has been employed which, together with the Welch–Stetson technique, has allowed us to discover twelve new RR Lyrae variables in the cluster, for which ephemerides are provided. Ten of these are RRabs, whereas the other two are RRcs. As originally suggested by Mayer, NGC 6229 is clearly an Oosterhoff type I globular cluster. We also confirm that V8 is a Population II Cepheid of the W Virginis type, and suspect that this is the case for V22 as well. The physical properties of the NGC 6229 RR Lyrae population are contrasted with those of M3 (NGC 5272) using several different methods, including a standard period-shift analysis. Possible differences between these two clusters are discussed.  相似文献

We report the results of photometric monitoring of the Melotte 66 field in BVI filters. 10 variables were identified with nine being new discoveries. The sample includes eight eclipsing binaries of which four are W UMa type stars and one star is a candidate blue straggler. All four contact binaries are likely the members of the cluster based on their estimated distances. 10 blue stars with   U − B < −0.3  were detected inside a  14.8 × 22.8 arcmin2  field centred on the cluster. Time series photometry for seven of them showed no evidence for any variability. The brightest object in the sample of blue stars is a promising candidate for a hot subdwarf belonging to the cluster. We show that the anomalously wide main sequence of the cluster, reported in some earlier studies, results from a combination of two effects: variable reddening occurring across the cluster field and the presence of a rich population of binary stars in the cluster itself. The density profile of the cluster field is derived and the total number of the member stars with  16 < V < 21  or  2.8 < M V < 7.8  is estimated conservatively at about 1100.  相似文献
