The South‐Pyrenean Foreland Basin is a sedimentary trough developed during Palaeogene times in response Pyrenean orogenesis. The structural development of the chain progressively involved the foreland basin deposits resulting in synsedimentary thrusting and growth of folds through the basin. The lower Eocene Roda Sandstone was deposited in a shallow‐marine environment whose topography (bathymetry) was modified by a series of growing gentle folds. This synsedimentary folding is evidenced in the field (i) thickening of sedimentary units above synclinal structures and thinning over anticlines; (ii) carbonate platform deposits growing on top of anticlines; (iii) the areal distribution of benthic foraminifera in transgressive facies assemblages determined by an irregular, fold‐influenced palaeobathymetry; (iv) variation of sandstone palaeocurrents related to the presence of a sedimentary trough formed by the synsedimentary growth of a syncline. In addition, synsedimentary folding has been evidenced from seismic data. In the Roda Sandstone example, the growth of gentle folds occurred in an area with high sedimentation rates (~0.21 ± 0.06 mm y?1). Due to the high sedimentation rates, exceeding the folds uplift rate (~0.10 ± 0.01 mm y?1), there are no noticeable unconformities in the growth strata at outcrop scale. However, the effects on the sedimentation are very significant, because the sediments were deposited close to sea level, and thus were very sensitive to fauna and facies distribution.  相似文献

The evolution from Late Cretaceous to early Eocene of the well dated Amiran foreland basin in the NW Iranian Zagros Mountains is studied based on the reconstruction of successive thickness, palaeobathymetry and subsidence maps. These maps show the progressive forelandwards migration of the mixed carbonate‐siliciclastic system associated with a decrease in creation of accommodation. Carbonate facies variations across the basin suggest a structural control on the carbonate distribution in the Amiran foreland basin, which has been used as initial constraint to study the control exerted by syndepositional folding in basin architecture and evolution by means of stratigraphic numerical modelling. Modelled results show that shallow bathymetries on top of growing folds enhance carbonate production and basin compartmentalization. As a consequence, coarse clastics become restricted to the internal parts of the basin and only the fine sediments can by‐pass the bathymetric highs generated by folding. Additionally, the development of extensive carbonate platforms on top of the anticlines favours the basinwards migration of the depositional system, which progrades farther with higher fold uplift rates. In this scenario, build‐ups on top of anticlines record its growth and can be used as a dating method. Extrapolation of presented modelling results into the Amiran foreland basin is in agreement with an early folding stage in the SE Lurestan area, between the Khorramabad and Kabir Kuh anticlines. This folding stage would enhance the development of carbonate platforms on top of the anticlines, the south‐westward migration of the system and eventually, the complete filling of the basin north of the Chenareh anticline at the end of the Cuisian. Incremental thickness maps are consistent with a thin (0.4–2 km) ophiolite complex in the source area of the Amiran basin.  相似文献

Unconformities in sedimentary successions (i.e. sequence boundaries) form in response to the interplay between a variety of factors such as eustasy, climate, tectonics and basin physiography. Unravelling the origin of sequence boundaries is thus one of the most pertinent questions in the analysis of sedimentary basins. We address this question by focusing on three of the most marked physical discontinuities (sequence boundaries) in the Cenozoic North Sea Basin: top Eocene, near‐top Oligocene and the mid‐Miocene unconformity. The Eocene/Oligocene transition is characterized by an abrupt increase in sediment supply from southern Norway and by minor erosion of the basin floor. The near‐top Oligocene and the mid‐Miocene unconformity are characterized by major changes in sediment input directions and by widespread erosion along their clinoform breakpoints. The mid‐Miocene shift in input direction was followed by a marked increase in sediment supply to the southern and central North Sea Basin. Correlation with global δ18O records suggests that top Eocene correlates with a major long‐term δ18O increase (inferred climatic cooling and eustatic fall). Near‐top Oligocene does not correlate with any major δ18O events, while the mid‐Miocene unconformity correlates with a gradual decrease followed by a major long‐term increase in δ18O values The abrupt increases in sediment supply in post‐Eocene and post‐middle Miocene time correlate with similar changes worldwide and with major δ18O increases, suggesting a global control (i.e. climate and eustasy) of the post‐Eocene sedimentation in the North Sea Basin. Erosional features observed at near‐top Oligocene and at the mid‐Miocene unconformity are parallel to the clinoform breakpoints and resemble scarps formed by mass wasting. Incised valleys have not been observed, indicating that sea level never fell significantly below the clinoform breakpoint during the Oligocene to middle Miocene.  相似文献

The Sivas Basin, located in the Central Anatolian Plateau of Turkey, is a foreland basin that records a complex interaction between sedimentation, salt tectonics and regional shortening during the Oligo‐Miocene leading to the formation of numerous mini‐basins. The Oligocene sedimentary infill of the mini‐basins consists of a thick continental succession, the Karayün Formation, comprising a vertical succession of three main sub‐environments: (i) playa‐lake, (ii) fluvial braided, and (iii) saline lacustrine. These sub‐environments are seen as forming a large Distributive Fluvial System (DFS) modified through time as a function of sediment supply and accommodation related to regional changes in climate and tectonic regime. Within neighbouring mini‐basins and despite a similar vertical stratigraphic succession, subtle variations in facies assemblages and thickness are observed in stratigraphic units of equivalent age, thus demonstrating the local control exerted by halokinesis. Stratigraphic and stratal patterns reveal in great detail the complex interaction between salt tectonics and sedimentation including different types of halokinetic structures such as hooks, wedges and halokinetic folds. The regional variations of accommodation/sediment supply led to coeval changes in the architectural patterns recorded in the mini‐basins. The type of accommodation regime produces several changes in the sedimentary record: (i) a regime dominated by regional accommodation limits the impact of halokinesis, which is recorded as very small variations in stratigraphic thickness and facies distribution within and between mini‐basins; (ii) a regime dominated by localized salt‐induced accommodation linked to the subsidence of each individual mini‐basin enhances the facies heterogeneity within the DFS, causing sharp changes in stratigraphic thickness and facies assemblages within and between mini‐basins.  相似文献

Exceptional exposure of the forearc region of NW Peru offers insight into evolving convergent margins. The sedimentary fill of the Talara basin spans the Cretaceous to the Eocene for an overall thickness of 9000 m and records within its stratigraphy the complicated history of plate interactions, subduction tectonics, terrane accretion, and Andean orogeny. By the early Tertiary, extensional tectonism was forming a complex horst and graben system that partitioned the basin into a series of localized depocentres. Eocene strata record temporal transitions from deltaic and fluvial to deep‐water depositional environments as a response to abrupt, tectonically controlled relative sea‐level changes across those depocentres. Stratigraphic and provenance data suggest a direct relationship between sedimentary packaging and regional tectonics, marked by changes in source terranes at major unconformities. A sharp shift is recognized at the onset of deepwater (bathyal) sedimentation of the Talara Formation, whose sediments reflect an increased influx of mafic material to the basin, likely related to the arc region. Although the modern topography of the Amotape Mountains partially isolates the Talara basin from the Lancones basin and the Andean Cordillera to the east, provenance data suggest that the Amotape Mountains were not always an obstacle for Cordilleran sediment dispersal. The mountain belt intermittently isolated the Talara basin from Andean‐related sediment throughout the early Tertiary, allowing arc‐related sediment to reach the basin only during periods of subsidence in the forearc region, probably related to plate rearrangement and/or seamounts colliding with the trench. Intraplate coupling and/or partial locking of subduction plates could be among the major causes behind shifts from contraction to extension (and enhanced subduction erosion) in the forearc region. Eventually, collisional tectonic and terrane accretion along the Ecuadorian margin forced a major late‐Eocene change in sediment dispersal.  相似文献

Geometric analysis shows that the angle of migration of coastal sedimentary facies is a function of the relative sea-level change and the thickness of sediment deposited or eroded. The angle of facies migration compared to the slopes on the sediment surface determines the degree of facies preservation and stratigraphic relationships to the surrounding facies. Vertical facies successions generated by radial migration of environments show a great deal of variety because the sediment surface in both marine and non-marine areas is concave-up. Both regressive and transgressive sequences with non-erosive marine-nonmarine contacts can be generated. Transgression at a slightly lower angle can form a ravinement surface cut on non-marine deposits with onlapping barrier sands or shallow marine deposits. Regression with relative sea-level drop generates a minor erosion surface with baselapping isolated shoreline deposits. Disequilibrium conditions occur when sea level varies at a rate exceeding the ability of the system to supply or redistribute sediment, with resulting changes in surficial slopes. Onlapping and downlapping stratal relationships across erosion surfaces result because of differences in slopes between marine and non-marine environments. These discontinuities are generally less than one degree, but could possibly be recognized on high quality multichannel seismic lines. Most of these discontinuities are probably not regionally extensive enough to be regarded as sequence boundaries. Tectonic tilting or differential subsidence of strata during depositional hiatuses is necessary to generate true regional unconformities or sequence boundaries. Where facies climb with respect to horizontal, erosion surfaces produced only by this migration may cut across lithostratigraphic units at higher angles, up to 3 or 4 degrees. Low-angle erosion surfaces relevant to the scales of sequence stratigraphic studies may result only from facies migration, even during a period of relative sea-level rise.  相似文献

The paper makes some analyses on 11 trace elements in the Milanggouwan stratigraphical section in the Salawusu River valley, which is regarded as a prototype geology-palaeoclimate record since 150 ka BP. The results show that the content and variation of trace elements has experienced remarkably regular changes in the pace with coarse and fine sedimentary cycles of palaeo-aeolian sands to its overlying fluvio-lacustrine facies or/and palaeosols. The trace elements with chemical properties of relatively active (V, Sr, Cu, Ni, As) and relatively stable (P, Pb, Rb, Mn, Nb, Zr) are a manifestation of the corresponding 27 changeable cycles between peak and valley values, appearing a multi-fluctuational process line of relative gathering and migration since then. The low numerical value distribution of these two types of trace elements in the aeolian sand facies represents erosion and accumulation under wind force during the cold-dry climate. Whereas their enrichments in both fluvio-lacustrine facies and palaeosols are related to the valley’s special low-lying physiognomic position between the Ordos Plateau and the Loess Plateau under the warm and humid climate conditions. The above relatively migrated and gathered change of the trace elements is the result of 27 climatic cycles of cold-dry and warm-humid, which is probably caused by repeated alternations of winter monsoon and summer monsoon in the Mu Us Sandy Land influenced by the climate vicissitudes in northern hemisphere during glacial and interglacial periods since 150 ka BP.  相似文献

Utilizing two outcrop data sets with dip direction exposures of shallow-water (tens of meters) deltaic clinoforms, this paper quantifies sedimentary facies proportions and clinoform lengths and gradients, and links process regimes to delta clinoform dimensions. Both data sets are from foreland basins, the Cretaceous Chimney Rock Sandstone of the Rock Springs Formation from the US Western Interior, and the Eocene Brogniartfjellet Clinoform Complex 8 of the Battfjellet Formation from the Central Basin of Spitsbergen. Sedimentary facies indicate presence of both river- and wave-dominated clinothems in each data set. Facies characteristics and distribution implies that river-dominated clinothem progradation was primarily driven by deposition from weak hyperpycnal flow turbidity currents across the clinoforms, and minor slumps. Wave-dominated clinothems were constructed by wave processes rather than alongshore currents, and are also progradational subaerial clinoforms, with one exception, where the formation of a compound subaqueous clinoform set indicates erosion and sediment bypass above the wave base. Sediment distribution and lithological heterogeneity in the river-dominated clinothems is controlled by individual hyperpycnal flow events or mouth-bar collapse events, and thus by self-organization and minimal reworking that results in a heterogeneity that is difficult to predict (high entropy). The efficient reworking of river-derived sediments in wave-dominated clinothems results in predictable lithological sediment partitioning (low entropy). Clinoform dimension analyses show that although of similar sediment caliber, river-dominated clinoforms in both data sets are on average 3–4 times steeper and 3–4 times shorter than the wave-dominated clinoforms, with mean gradients of ca 4 degrees and ca 1 degree, respectively, and mean lengths of 150–230 m and 640–760 m. These results require corroboration from additional data sets, but do suggest that river- and wave-dominated delta clinoforms are likely to have distinct downdip extents (lengths) and gradients for given clinoform heights. Clinoform shape can thus be a method for differentiating ancient river- vs. wave-dominated deltaic clinoforms, in addition to their sedimentary facies, biogenic features and sandstone maturity, and helpful when incorporated into reservoir models.  相似文献

A transition from supradetachment to rift basin signature is recorded in the ~1,500 m thick succession of continental to shallow marine conglomerates, mixed carbonate‐siliciclastic shallow marine sediments and carbonate ramp deposits preserved in the Bandar Jissah Basin, located southeast of Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman. During deposition, isostatically‐driven uplift rotated the underlying Banurama Detachment and basin fill ~45° before both were cut by the steep Wadi Kabir Fault as the basin progressed to a rift‐style bathymetry that controlled sedimentary facies belts and growth packages. The upper Paleocene to lower Eocene Jafnayn Formation was deposited in a supradetachment basin controlled by the Banurama Detachment. Alluvial fan conglomerates sourced from the Semail Ophiolite and the Saih Hatat window overlie the ophiolitic substrate and display sedimentary transport directions parallel to tectonic transport in the Banurama Detachment. The continental strata grade into braidplain, mouth bar, shoreface and carbonate ramp deposits. Subsequent detachment‐related folding of the basin during deposition of the Eocene Rusayl and lower Seeb formations marks the early transition towards a rift‐style basin setting. The folding, which caused drainage diversion and is affiliated with sedimentary growth packages, coincided with uplift‐isostasy as the Banurama Detachment was abandoned and the steeper Marina, Yiti Beach and Wadi Kabir faults were activated. The upper Seeb Formation records the late transition to rift‐style basin phase, with fault‐controlled sedimentary growth packages and facies distributions. A predominance of carbonates over siliciclastic sediments resulted from increasing near‐fault accommodation, complemented by reduced sedimentary input from upland catchments. Hence, facies distributions in the Bandar Jissah Basin reflect the progression from detachment to rift‐style tectonics, adding to the understanding of post‐orogenic extensional basin systems.  相似文献

We propose a new mechanism for the formation of some polygonal fault arrays. Seismically imaged opal-A (biogenic silica) to opal-CT (cristobalite and tridymite) diagenetic boundaries from two regions offshore of Norway have developed regular wavelength patterns. The pattern consists of cell-shaped elevations that are 200–2600 m wide and up to 200 m high, separated by troughs. The cells represent regions that undergo diagenesis at shallower burial depths, earlier than adjacent areas. The chemical change leads to mechanical compaction and porosity reduction; therefore subsidence occurs above the cells in the overburden. Roughly circular depressions form above the cells, and a network of folds form above inter-cell areas. Networks of normal faults form on the crests and margins of the folds as a result of flexure during the folding. The progressive lateral growth of the cells causes the depressions to widen and intervening folds to narrow resulting in new differential compaction-induced faults to form with variable strike orientations. Lateral and vertical growth of cells leads to cells conjoining and the re-establishment of a uniform planar reaction boundary. This novel but simple mechanism can explain some polygonal fault arrays that form above opal-A to opal-CT reaction boundaries and in these settings the mechanism should be considered in addition to syneresis, density inversion or low coefficients of residual friction which are the most commonly cited drivers for polygonal fault systems.  相似文献

Three successive zones of fault‐related folds disrupt the proximal part of the northern Tian Shan foreland in NW China. A new magnetostratigraphy of the Taxi He section on the north limb of the Tugulu anticline in the middle deformed zone clarifies the chronology of both tectonic deformation and depositional evolution of this collisional mountain belt. Our ~1200‐m‐thick section encompasses the upper Cenozoic terrigenous sequence within which ~300 sampling horizons yield an age span of ~8–2 Ma. Although the basal age in the Taxi He section of the Xiyu conglomerate (often cited as an indicator of initial deformation) is ~2.1 Ma, much earlier growth of the Tugulu anticline is inferred from growth strata dated at ~6.0 Ma. Folding of Neogene strata and angular unconformities in anticlines in the more proximal and distal deformed zones indicate deformation during Miocene and Early Pleistocene times, respectively. In the Taxi He area, sediment‐accumulation rates significantly accelerate at ~4 Ma, apparently in response to encroaching thrust loads. Together, growth strata, angular unconformities, and sediment‐accumulation rates document the northward migration of tectonic deformation into the northern Tian Shan foreland basin during the late Cenozoic. A progradational alluvial–lacustrine system associated with this northward progression is subdivided into two facies associations at Tugulu: a shallow lacustrine environment before ~5.9 Ma and an alluvial fan environment subsequently. The lithofacies progradation encompasses the time‐transgressive Xiyu conglomerate deposits, which should only be recognized as a lithostratigraphic unit. Along the length of the foreland, the locus of maximum shortening shifts between the medial and proximal zones of folding, whereas the total shortening across the foreland remains quite homogeneous along strike, suggesting spatially steady tectonic forcing since late Miocene times.  相似文献

ABSTRACT This contribution deals with the External Sierras and a part of the foreland Ebro Basin related to the southern Pyrenean thrust front. The structure of the External Sierras consists of a south‐verging thrust system developed from middle Eocene to early Miocene times. Since the end of the early Oligocene, a regional‐scale detachment anticline (the Santo Domingo anticline) developed, folding the original thrust system and creating new thrust units. The molassic fill in this part of the Ebro Basin (Uncastillo Formation) mainly corresponds to an extensive, composite distributary fluvial system, termed the Luna system, which drained the uplifted Gavarnie Unit to the north. Small, marginal alluvial fans originated along the External Sierras and coalesced in the proximal‐middle portions of the Luna system. Three tecto‐sedimentary units (TSU), late Oligocene to early Miocene in age, comprise the Uncastillo Formation. Lateral relationships and areal distribution of lithofacies through time have been used to establish sedimentary models for the marginal alluvial fans and the Luna fluvial system. Their sedimentary evolution was controlled by tectonics affecting the drainage basins, and based on mapping and stratigraphic relationships of the TSU, the temporal succession of the marginal alluvial fans and their relationships with each thrust system in the south Pyrenean front can be shown. Alluvial fan formation evolved through time from west to east, in accord with the progressive eastward growth of the Santo Domingo anticline as a conical fold. The fluvial network of the Luna system appears to have been mainly radial, but near the basin margin its architecture was influenced by the syndepositional Fuencalderas and Uncastillo anticlines developed within the Ebro Basin. These low‐amplitude folds originated by layer‐parallel shearing caused by rotation of the southern flank of the Santo Domingo anticline. Progressive uplift of these anticlines constrained part of the fluvial discharge to synclinal areas parallel to the basin margin; these areas where characterized by meandering sandy channels. At the peripheral tips of the anticlines the channel system flowed basinward.  相似文献

Sea level has been estimated for the last 108 million years through backstripping of corehole data from the New Jersey and Delaware Coastal Plains. Inherent errors due to this method of calculating sea level are discussed, including uncertainties in ages, depth of deposition and the model used for tectonic subsidence. Problems arising from the two-dimensional aspects of subsidence and response to sediment loads are also addressed. The rates and magnitudes of sea-level change are consistent with at least ephemeral ice sheets throughout the studied interval. Million-year sea-level cycles are, for the most part, consistent within the study area suggesting that they may be eustatic in origin. This conclusion is corroborated by correlation between sequence boundaries and unconformities in New Zealand. The resulting long-term curve suggests that sea level ranged from about 75–110 m in the Late Cretaceous, reached a maximum of about 150 m in the Early Eocene and fell to zero in the Miocene. The Late Cretaceous long-term (107 years) magnitude is about 100–150 m less than sea level predicted from ocean volume. This discrepancy can be reconciled by assuming that dynamic topography in New Jersey was driven by North America overriding the subducted Farallon plate. However, geodynamic models of this effect do not resolve the problem in that they require Eocene sea level to be significantly higher in the New Jersey region than the global average.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the relationship between thrust loading and sedimentary facies evolution, we analyse the progradation of fluvial coarse‐grained deposits in the retroarc foreland basin system of the northern Andes of Colombia. We compare the observed sedimentary facies distribution with the calculated one‐dimensional (1D) Eocene to Quaternary sediment‐accumulation rates in the Medina wedge‐top basin and with a three‐dimensional (3D) sedimentary budget based on the interpretation of ~1800 km of industry‐style seismic reflection profiles and borehole data. Age constraints are derived from a new chronostratigraphic framework based on extensive fossil palynological assemblages. The sedimentological data from the Medina Basin reveal rapid accumulation of fluvial and lacustrine sediments at rates of up to ~500 m my?1 during the Miocene. Provenance data based on gravel petrography and paleocurrents reveal that these Miocene fluvial systems were sourced from Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene sedimentary units exposed to the west in the Eastern Cordillera. Peak sediment‐accumulation rates in the upper Carbonera Formation and the Guayabo Group occur during episodes of coarse‐grained facies progradation in the early and late Miocene proximal foredeep. We interpret this positive correlation between sediment accumulation and gravel deposition as the direct consequence of thrust activity along the Servitá–Lengupá faults. This contrasts with one class of models relating gravel progradation in more distal portions of foreland basin systems to episodes of tectonic quiescence.  相似文献

We examine the basin geometry and sedimentary patterns in the Muddy Creek half graben of south-west Montana by integrating geological mapping, structural and basin analysis, 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, biostratigraphy and reflection seismic data. The half graben formed in late Middle Eocene to early Oligocene (?) time at the breakaway of a regional, WSW-dipping detachment system. Although the structure of the half graben is that of a supradetachment basin, facies patterns and basin architecture do not conform to a recent model for extensional basins above detachment faults. The border fault, the Muddy Creek fault system, consists of three en echelon, left-stepping normal faults separated by two relay ramps. The fault steepens southward toward each en echelon step, ranges in dip from 8 to 60° near the surface, but flattens at depths between 0 and 3 km. A broad ENE-plunging displacement-gradient syncline defines the central part of the half graben and is flanked by narrow SE-and NE-plunging anticlines to the north and south. Fine-grained deposits of the syntectonic basin-fill are thickest in the central syncline and interfinger with footwall-derived conglomerate near the adjacent anticlines. These facies patterns suggest that folding was coeval with extension and sedimentation in the half graben. Pre-extensional volcanic rocks and interbedded conglomerate filled a major ESE-trending palaeovalley along the future axis of the Muddy Creek half graben. Synextensional sedimentary deposits include lacustrine and paludal shale, mudstone and sandstone ponded in the centre of the half graben, and a narrow (typically <1.5 km wide) fringe of coarse alluvial-fan and fan-delta conglomerate and sandstone derived from the footwall. Angular unconformities and rock-slide deposits occur only locally within the syntectonic sequence. These facies patterns agree well with the half-graben depositional model of Leeder & Gawthorpe but not with a more recent supradetachment basin model of Friedmann & Burbank despite the demonstrably low dip-angle of the basin-bounding normal fault. These data show that it may not be possible to differentiate between supradetachment basins and half graben with steeper border faults using the architecture of the associated basin-fill deposits.  相似文献

Investigation of a >6-km-thick succession of Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary rocks in the Tajik Basin reveals that this depocentre consists of three stacked basin systems that are interpreted to reflect different mechanisms of subsidence associated with tectonics in the Pamir Mountains: a Lower to mid-Cretaceous succession, an Upper Cretaceous–Lower Eocene succession and an Eocene–Neogene succession. The Lower to mid-Cretaceous succession consists of fluvial deposits that were primarily derived from the Triassic Karakul–Mazar subduction–accretion complex in the northern Pamir. This succession is characterized by a convex-up (accelerating) subsidence curve, thickens towards the Pamir and is interpreted as a retroarc foreland basin system associated with northward subduction of Tethyan oceanic lithosphere. The Upper Cretaceous to early Eocene succession consists of fine-grained, marginal marine and sabkha deposits. The succession is characterized by a concave-up subsidence curve. Regionally extensive limestone beds in the succession are consistent with late stage thermal relaxation and relative sea-level rise following lithospheric extension, potentially in response to Tethyan slab rollback/foundering. The Upper Cretaceous–early Eocene succession is capped by a middle Eocene to early Oligocene (ca. 50–30 Ma) disconformity, which is interpreted to record the passage of a flexural forebulge. The disconformity is represented by a depositional hiatus, which is 10–30 Myr younger than estimates for the initiation of India–Asia collision and overlaps in age with the start of prograde metamorphism recorded in the Pamir gneiss domes. Overlying the disconformity, a >4-km-thick upper Eocene–Neogene succession displays a classic, coarsening upward unroofing sequence characterized by accelerating subsidence, which is interpreted as a retro-foreland basin associated with crustal thickening of the Pamir during India–Asia collision. Thus, the Tajik Basin provides an example of a long-lived composite basin in a retrowedge position that displays a sensitivity to plate margin processes. Subsidence, sediment accumulation and basin-forming mechanisms are influenced by subduction dynamics, including periods of slab-shallowing and retreat.  相似文献

The Miocene Waitemata Basin was deposited on a moving base provided by the Northland Allochthon, which was emplaced in the Late Oligocene, as a new convergent plate boundary was established in northern New Zealand. The basin experienced complex interaction between tectonic and gravity‐driven shallow deformation. Spectacular examples of the resulting structures exposed on eastern Whangaparaoa Peninsula 50 km north of Auckland provide a world‐class example of weak rock deformation, the neglected domain between soft‐sediment and hard rock deformation. Quartz‐poor turbidite sequences display a protracted sequence of deformations: D1, synsedimentary slumping; D2, large scale deeper‐seated sliding and extensional low‐angle shearing, associated with generation of boudinage and broken formation; D3, thrusting and folding, indicating transport mostly to the SE; D4, thrusting and folding in the opposite direction; D5, further folding, including sinistral shear; D6, steep faults. The deformation sequence suggests continuous or intermittent southeastward transport of units with increasing sedimentary and structural burial. By phase D3, the rocks had passed from the soft‐sediment state to low levels of consolidation. However, with a compressive strength of ~5 MPa they are weak rocks even today. Such weak‐rock deformation must be important in other sedimentary basins, especially those associated with active convergent plate boundaries and with immature source areas for their sediments.
