For LAMOST, the largest sky survey program in China, the solution of the problem of automatic discrimination of stars from galaxies by spectra has shown that the results of the PSF test can be significantly refined. However, the problem is made worse when the redshifts of galaxies are not available. We present a new automatic method of star/(normal) galaxy separation, which is based on Statistical Mixture Modeling with Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (SMM-RBFNN). This work is a continuation of our previous one, where active and non-active celestial objects were successfully segregated. By combining the method in this paper and the previous one, stars can now be effectively separated from galaxies and AGNs by their spectra-a major goal of LAMOST, and an indispensable step in any automatic spectrum classification system. In our work, the training set includes standard stellar spectra from Jacoby's spectrum library and simulated galaxy spectra of EO, SO, Sa, Sb types with redshift ranging from 0 to 1 相似文献

An automated classification technique for large size stellar surveys is proposed. It uses the extended Kalman filter as a feature selector and pre-classifier of the data, and the radial basis function neural networks for the classification. Experiments with real data have shown that the correct classification rate can reach as high as 93%, which is quite satisfactory. When different system models are selected for the extended Kalman filter, the classification results are relatively stable. It is shown that for this particular case the result using extended Kalman filter is better than using principal component analysis. 相似文献

We present the single stellar population (SSP) synthesis results of our new synthetic stellar atmosphere models library with a spectral sampling of 0.3 Å, covering the wavelength range from 3000 to 7000 Å for a wide range of metallicities (twice solar, solar, half solar and 1/10 solar). The stellar library is composed of 1650 spectra computed with the latest improvements in stellar atmospheres. In particular, it incorporates non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) line-blanketed models for hot ( T eff ≥ 27 500 K) , and LTE line-blanketed models (Phoenix) for cool (3000 ≤ T eff ≤ 4500 K) stars. Because of the high spectral resolution of this library, evolutionary synthesis models can be used to predict the strength of numerous weak absorption lines and the evolution of the profiles of the strongest lines over a wide range of ages. The SSP results have been calculated for ages from 1 Myr to 17 Gyr using the stellar evolutionary tracks provided by the Geneva and Padova groups. For young stellar populations, our results have a very detailed coverage of high-temperature stars with similar results for the Padova and Geneva isochrones. For intermediate and old stellar populations, our results, once degraded to a lower resolution, are similar to the ones obtained by other groups (limitations imposed by the stellar evolutionary physics notwidthstanding). The limitations and advantages of our models for the analysis of integrated populations are described. Using the near-infrared spectral stellar library of Cenarro et al., the behaviour of the Mg i line at 8807 Å and nearby TiO bands is analyzed in terms of the effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity of the library stars. New spectroscopic indices for both spectral features – namely MgI and sTiO – are defined, and their sensitivities to different signal-to-noise ratios, spectral resolutions, flux calibrations and sky emission-line residuals are characterized. The two new indices exhibit interesting properties. In particular, MgI is a good indicator of the Mg abundance, whereas sTiO is a powerful dwarf-to-giant discriminator for cold spectral types. Empirical fitting polynomials that reproduce the strength of the new indices as a function of the stellar atmospheric parameters are computed, and a fortran routine with the fitting function predictions is made available. A thorough study of several error sources, non-solar [Mg/Fe] ratios and their influence on the fitting function residuals is also presented. From this analysis, an [Mg/Fe] underabundance of ∼−0.04 is derived for the Galactic open cluster M67. 相似文献

We introduce versatile spectral analysis (VESPA): a new method which aims to recover robust star formation and metallicity histories from galactic spectra. VESPA uses the full spectral range to construct a galaxy history from synthetic models. We investigate the use of an adaptative parametrization grid to recover reliable star formation histories on a galaxy-by-galaxy basis. Our goal is robustness as opposed to high-resolution histories, and the method is designed to return high time resolution only where the data demand it. In this paper we detail the method and we present our findings when we apply VESPA to synthetic and real Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic data. We show that the number of parameters that can be recovered from a spectrum depends strongly on the signal-to-noise ratio, wavelength coverage and presence or absence of a young population. For a typical SDSS sample of galaxies, we can normally recover between two and five stellar populations. We find very good agreement between VESPA and our previous analysis of the SDSS sample with MOPED. 相似文献

To further our knowledge of the complex physical process of galaxy formation, it is essential that we characterize the formation and evolution of large data bases of galaxies. The spectral synthesis starlight code of Cid Fernandes et al. was designed for this purpose. Results of starlight are highly dependent on the choice of input basis of simple stellar population (SSP) spectra. Speed of the code, which uses random walks through the parameter space, scales as the square of the number of the basis spectra, making it computationally necessary to choose a small number of SSPs that are coarsely sampled in age and metallicity. In this paper, we develop methods based on a diffusion map that, for the first time, choose appropriate bases of prototype SSP spectra from a large set of SSP spectra designed to approximate the continuous grid of age and metallicity of SSPs of which galaxies are truly composed. We show that our techniques achieve better accuracy of physical parameter estimation for simulated galaxies. Specifically, we show that our methods significantly decrease the age–metallicity degeneracy that is common in galaxy population synthesis methods. We analyse a sample of 3046 galaxies in Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 and compare the parameter estimates obtained from different basis choices. 相似文献

We derive physical parameters of galaxies from their observed spectra using MOPED, the optimized data compression algorithm of Heavens, Jimenez & Lahav. Here we concentrate on parametrizing galaxy properties, and apply the method to the NGC galaxies in Kennicutt's spectral atlas. We focus on deriving the star formation history, metallicity and dust content of galaxies. The method is very fast, taking a few seconds of CPU time to estimate ∼17 parameters, and is therefore specially suited to studying large data sets, such as the Anglo-Australian two-degree-field (2dF) galaxy survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Without the power of MOPED, the recovery of star formation histories in these surveys would be impractical. In Kennicutt's atlas, we find that for the spheroidals a small recent burst of star formation is required to provide the best fit to the spectrum. There is clearly a need for theoretical stellar atmospheric models with spectral resolution better than 1 Å if we are to extract all the rich information that large redshift surveys contain in their galaxy spectra. 相似文献

We investigate the utility of a variety of features in performing morphological galaxy classification using back-propagation neural network classifiers based on a sample of 805 galaxies classified by Naim et al. We derive a total of 22 features from each galaxy image and use these as inputs to a neural network trained using back-propagation. The morphological types are subdivided into two to seven groups, and the relevance of each of the features is examined for each grouping. We use the magnitude of the regularization parameter for each input to determine whether a feature can be eliminated. We then prune the input features of the network, typically down to four features. We examine a number of methods of assessing the performance of the network and determine which works best for our task. 相似文献

We have carried out an investigation of the early-type multiple star U Oph. We have used new high-resolution spectroscopy with the High Efficiency and Resolution Canterbury University Large Echelle Spectrograph (HERCULES) and 1-m McLellan Telescope of the University of Canterbury at Mt John University Observatory and literature-sourced optical and ultraviolet photometry. We applied the local reduction package [HERCULES Reduction Software Package (HRSP)] and other software to the spectroscopic data to find radial velocities. Information limit optimization techniques (ILOT) utilizing physically realistic fitting functions were applied to these data to yield new sets of absolute parameters: M 1 = 5.13, M 2 = 4.56 (±2 per cent); R 1 = 3.41, R 2 = 3.08 (±1 per cent) ; for the early-type eclipsing binary that dominates the system. We have combined times-of-minima photometry with other data for the triple system that makes up ADS 10428A, utilizing the wide orbit of Wolf et al. as well as HIPPARCOS astrometry of U Oph. ILOT techniques applied to the astrometric orbit yield a mass of the third star as 0.83 M⊙ . We estimate an age of the system of around 30–40 Myr, from the isochrones of Bertelli, results given by Vaz, Andersen & Claret, as well as our own tests with an updated version of Paczyński's stellar modelling code. This age and other details are consistent with a possible origin in Gould's Belt. Such information for this, and comparable young multiple star systems, may help to clarify general properties of star formation and the subtle interactions of stars and their environment. 相似文献

In order to derive the stellar population of a galaxy or a star cluster, it is a common practice to fit its spectrum by a combination of spectra extracted from a data base (e.g. a library of stellar spectra). If the data to be fitted are equivalent widths, the combination is a non-linear one and the problem of finding the 'best' combination of stars that fits the data becomes complex. It is probably because of this complexity that the mathematical aspects of the problem did not receive a satisfying treatment; the question of the uniqueness of the solution , for example, was left in uncertainty. In this paper we complete the solution of the problem by considering the underdetermined case where there are fewer equivalent widths to fit than stars in the data base (the overdetermined case was treated previously). The underdetermined case is interesting to consider because it leaves space for the addition of supplementary astrophysical constraints. In fact, it is shown in this paper that when a solution exists it is generally not unique. There are infinitely many solutions, all of them contained within a convex polyhedron in the solutions vector space. The vertices of this polyhedron are extremal solutions of the stellar population synthesis. If no exact solution exists, an approximate solution can be found using the method described for the overdetermined case. Also provided is an algorithm able to solve the problem numerically; in particular all the vertices of the polyhedron are found. 相似文献

We present the aim and first results of the RApid Temporal Survey (RATS) made using the Wide Field Camera on the Isaac Newton Telescope. Our initial survey covers 3 square degrees, reaches a depth of V ∼ 22.5 and is sensitive to variations on time-scales as short as 2 min: this is a new parameter space. Each field was observed for over 2 h in white light, with 12 fields being observed in total. Our initial analysis finds 45 targets which show significant variations. Around half of these systems show quasi-sinusoidal variations: we believe they are contact or short period binaries. We find four systems which show variations on a time-scale less than 1 h. The shortest period system has a period of 374 s. We find two systems which show a total eclipse. Further photometric and spectroscopic observations are required to fully identify the nature of these systems. We outline our future plans and objectives. 相似文献
