A close high‐mass binary system consisting of a neutron star (NS) and a massive OB supergiant companion is expected to lead to a Thorne‐Żytkow object (TZO) structure, which consists of a NS core and a stellar envelope. We use the scenario machine program to calculate the formation tracks of TZOs in close high‐mass NS binaries and their subsequent evolution. We propose and demonstrate that the explosion and instant contraction of a TZO structure leave its stellar remnant as a soft gamma‐ray repeater and an anomalous X‐ray pulsar respectively. The kHz quasi‐periodic oscillations (QPOs) have been detected by the RXTE satellite in about thirty neutron stars (NSs) in low mass X‐ray binaries (LMXBs), which are usually interpreted to be related to the Keplerian motions in the orbit close to NS surface where the accreted matter is sucked onto the star. Based on the MHD Alfvén wave oscillation model and the relativistic precession model for the neutron star (NS) kHz QPOs, estimations of mass M and radius R of some NSs are given, which can give clues to evaluate the models. The distribution of mass ratios for a sample of common proper motion (CPM) binaries is determined and compared with that of 798 visual binaries (VB's) studied earlier, in hopes of answering the question: Can the member stars of these systems have been drawn at random from the normal initial mass function for single stars? The observed distributions peak strongly toward q = 1·0 for both kinds of systems, but less strongly for the CPM's than for the VB's. Due allowance having been made for assorted observational selection effects, it seems quite probable that the CPM's represent the observed part of a population drawn at random from the normal IMF, while the VB's are much more difficult to interpret that way and could, perhaps, result from a formation mechanism that somewhat favors systems with roughly equal components. 相似文献

We investigate the unsteady column accretion of material at a rate \(10^{15} g s^{ - 1} \leqslant \dot M \leqslant 10^{16} g s^{ - 1}\) onto the surface of a magnetized neutron star using a modified first-order Godunov method with splitting. We study the dynamics of the formation and evolution of a shock in an accretion column near the surface of a star with a magnetic field 5×1011≤B≤1013 G. An effective transformation of the accretion flow energy into cyclotron radiation is shown to be possible for unsteady accretion with a collisionless shock whose front executes damped oscillations. The collisionless deceleration of the accreting material admits the conservation of a fraction of the heavy nuclei that have not been destroyed in spallation reactions. The fraction of the CNO nuclei that reach the stellar atmosphere is shown to depend on the magnetic field strength of the star. 相似文献

Recently, De Marchi, Paresce & Pulone studied a sample of 20 globular clusters and found that all clusters with high concentrations have steep stellar mass functions while clusters with low concentration have comparatively shallow mass functions. No globular clusters were found with a flat mass function and high concentration. This seems curious since more concentrated star clusters are believed to be dynamically more evolved and should have lost more low-mass stars via evaporation, which would result in a shallower mass function in the low-mass part.
We show that this effect can be explained by residual-gas expulsion from initially mass segregated star clusters, and is enhanced further through unresolved binaries. If gas expulsion is the correct mechanism to produce the observed trend in the c –α -plane, then observation of these parameters would allow to constrain cluster starting conditions such as star formation efficiency and the time-scale of gas expulsion. 相似文献

It has been suggested that the 35 day clock mechanism of Her X-1 is caused by the precession of the neutron star. We made calculations for this model. Comparing our calculated results with observations we find:
- 1. (1) The theoretical light curve over the the 35 day cycle does not agree with the observed curve by Jones and Forman (1976).
2. (2) The change of pulse width and intensity with the 35 day phase is large in the model, seemingly disagreeing with the observations (e.g., Gruber et al. 1980).
3. (3) Parmer et al. (1985) reported that they did not see the expected 35 day variation in X-ray intensity expected in the model.
Pravdo et al. (1977) suggested that the observed X-ray pulses were formed by Thomson scattering of symmetric radiating beams generated near the surface of the neutron star. Our analysis based on the theory of Thomson scattering in strong magnetic fields shows that this model agrees well with the observations. 相似文献

We have identified three possible ways in which future XMM‐Newton observations can provide significant constraints on the equation of state of neutron stars. First, using a long observation of the neutron star X‐ray transient Cen X‐4 in quiescence one can use the RGS spectrum to constrain the interstellar extinction to the source. This removes this parameter from the X‐ray spectral fitting of the pn and MOS spectra and allows us to investigate whether the variability observed in the quiescent X‐ray spectrum of this source is due to variations in the soft thermal spectral component or variations in the power law spectral component coupled with variations in NH. This will test whether the soft thermal spectral component can indeed be due to the hot thermal glow of the neutron star. Potentially such an observation could also reveal redshifted spectral lines from the neutron star surface. Second, XMM‐Newton observations of radius expansion type I Xray bursts might reveal redshifted absorption lines from the surface of the neutron star. Third, XMM‐Newton observations of eclipsing quiescent low‐mass X‐ray binaries provide the eclipse duration. With this the system inclination can be determined accurately. The inclination determined from the X‐ray eclipse duration in quiescence, the rotational velocity of the companion star and the semi‐amplitude of the radial velocity curve determined through optical spectroscopy, yield the neutron star mass. Spectra of the spreading layers on the neutron star surface are calculated on the basis of the Inogamov–Sunyaev model taking into account general relativity correction to the surface gravity and considering various chemical composition of the accreting matter. Local (at a given latitude) spectra are similar to the X-ray burst spectra and are described by a diluted blackbody. Total spreading layer spectra are integrated accounting for the light bending, gravitational redshift and the relativistic Doppler effect and aberration. They depend slightly on the inclination angle and on the luminosity. These spectra also can be fitted by a diluted blackbody with the colour temperature depending mainly on a neutron star compactness. Owing to the fact that the flux from the spreading layer is close to the critical Eddington, we can put constraints on a neutron star radius without the need to know precisely the emitting region area or the distance to the source. The boundary layer spectra observed in the luminous low-mass X-ray binaries, and described by a blackbody of colour temperature T c = 2.4 ± 0.1 keV , restrict the neutron star radii to R = 14.8 ± 1.5 km (for a 1.4-M⊙ star and solar composition of the accreting matter), which corresponds to the hard equation of state. 相似文献

We present time-resolved optical spectroscopy and photometry of the nova-like cataclysmic variable V348 Puppis. The system displays the same spectroscopic behaviour as SW Sex stars, so we classify V348 Pup as a new member of the class. V348 Pup is the second SW Sex system (the first is V795 Herculis) which lies in the period gap. The spectra exhibit enhanced He ii λ 4686 emission, reminiscent of magnetic cataclysmic variables. The study of this emission line gives a primary velocity semi-amplitude of . We have also derived the system parameters, obtaining: , , and . The spectroscopic behaviour of V348 Pup is very similar to that of V795 Her, with the exception that V348 Pup shows deep eclipses. We have computed the '0.5-absorption' spectrum of both systems, obtaining spectra that resemble the absorption spectrum of a B0 V star. We propose that absorption in SW Sex systems can be produced by a vertically extended atmosphere which forms where the gas stream re-impacts the system, either at the accretion disc or at the magnetosphere of the white dwarf (assuming a magnetic scenario). 相似文献

In this paper we report on optical spectroscopic observations of the low-mass X-ray binary 2S 0921–630 obtained with the Very Large Telescope. We found sinusoidal radial velocity variations of the companion star with a semi-amplitude of 99.1 ± 3.1 km s−1 modulated on a period of 9.006 ± 0.007 d, consistent with the orbital period found previously for this source, and a systemic velocity of 44.4 ± 2.4 km s−1 . Owing to X-ray irradiation, the centre of light measured by the absorption lines from the companion star is probably shifted with respect to the centre of mass. We try to correct for this using the so-called K -correction. Conservatively applying the maximum correction possible and using the previously measured rotational velocity of the companion star, we find a lower limit to the mass of the compact object in 2S 0921–630 of MX sin3 i > 1.90 ± 0.25 M⊙ (1σ errors). The inclination in this system is well constrained since partial eclipses have been observed in X-ray and optical bands. For inclinations in the range 60° < i < 90° we find 1.90 ± 0.25 < MX < 2.9 ± 0.4 M⊙ . However, using this maximum K -correction we find that the ratio between the mass of the companion star and that of the compact object, q , is 1.32 ± 0.37, implying super-Eddington mass-transfer rates; however, evidence for that has not been found in 2S 0921–630. We conclude that the compact object in 2S 0921–630 is either a (massive) neutron star or a low-mass black hole. 相似文献

Optical/near-infrared (optical/NIR, OIR) light from low-mass neutron star X-ray binaries (NSXBs) in outburst is traditionally thought to be thermal emission from the accretion disc. Here we present a comprehensive collection of quasi-simultaneous OIR and X-ray data from 19 low magnetic field NSXBs, including new observations of three sources: 4U 0614+09, LMC X−2 and GX 349+2. The average radio–OIR spectrum for NSXBs is α≈+ 0.2 (where L ν ∝να ) at least at high luminosities when the radio jet is detected. This is comparable to, but slightly more inverted than the α≈ 0.0 found for black hole X-ray binaries. The OIR spectra and relations between OIR and X-ray fluxes are compared to those expected if the OIR emission is dominated by thermal emission from an X-ray or viscously heated disc, or synchrotron emission from the inner regions of the jets. We find that thermal emission due to X-ray reprocessing can explain all the data except at high luminosities for some NSXBs, namely, the atolls and millisecond X-ray pulsars. Optically thin synchrotron emission from the jets (with an observed OIR spectral index of αthin < 0 ) dominate the NIR light above and the optical above in these systems. For NSXB Z-sources, the OIR observations can be explained by X-ray reprocessing alone, although synchrotron emission may make a low-level contribution to the NIR, and could dominate the OIR in one or two cases. 相似文献

We collect the data of twin kilohertz quasi‐periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) published before 2012 from 26 neutron star (NS) low‐mass X‐ray binary (LMXB) sources, then we analyze the centroid frequency (ν) distribution of twin kHz QPOs (lower frequency ν1 and upper frequency ν2) both for Atoll and Z sources. For the data without shift‐and‐add, we find that Atoll and Z sources show different distributions of ν1, ν2 and ν2/ν1, but the same distribution of Δν (difference of twin kHz QPOs), which indicates that twin kHz QPOs may share the common properties of LXMBs and have the same physical origins. The distribution of Δν is quite different from a constant value, so is ν 2/ν1 from a constant ratio. The weighted mean values and maxima of ν1 and ν2 in Atoll sources are slightly higher than those in Z sources. We also find that shift‐and‐add technique can reconstruct the distributions of ν1 and Δν. The K‐S test results of ν1 and Δν between Atoll and Z sources from data with shift‐and‐add are quite different from those without it, and we think that this may be caused by the selection biases of the sample. We also study the properties of the quality factor (Q) and the root‐meansquared (rms) amplitude of 4U 0614+09 with data from the two observational methods, but the errors are too big to make a robust conclusion. The NS spin frequency (νs) distribution of 28 NS‐LMXBs show a bigger mean value (∼408 Hz) than that (∼281 Hz) of the radio binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs), which may be due to the lack of the spin detections from Z sources (systematically lower than 281 Hz). Furthermore, on the relations between the kHz QPOs and NS spin frequency νs, we find the approximate correlations of the mean values of Δν with NS spin and its half, respectively. There is increasing evidence that supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are scaled-up versions of Galactic black holes. We show that the amplitude of high-frequency X-ray variability in the hard spectral state is inversely proportional to the black hole mass over eight orders of magnitude. We have analysed all available hard-state data from RXTE of seven Galactic black holes. Their power density spectra change dramatically from observation to observation, except for the high-frequency (≳10 Hz) tail, which seems to have a universal shape, roughly represented by a power law of index −2. The amplitude of the tail, C M (extrapolated to 1 Hz), remains approximately constant for a given source, regardless of the luminosity, unlike the break or quasi-periodic oscillation frequencies, which are usually strongly correlated with luminosity. Comparison with a moderate-luminosity sample of AGN shows that the amplitude of the tail is a simple function of black hole mass, C M = C / M , where C ≈ 1.25 M⊙ Hz−1 . This makes C M a robust estimator of the black hole mass which is easy to apply to low- to moderate-luminosity supermassive black holes. The high-frequency tail with its universal shape is an invariant feature of a black hole and, possibly, an imprint of the last stable orbit. 相似文献

We extend recent work that included the effect of pressure forces to derive the precession rate of eccentric accretion discs in cataclysmic variables to the case of double degenerate systems. We find that the logical scaling of the pressure force in such systems results in predictions of unrealistically high primary masses. Using the prototype AM CVn as a calibrator for the magnitude of the effect, we find that there is no scaling that applies consistently to all the systems in the class. We discuss the reasons for the lack of a superhump period to mass ratio relationship analogous to that known for SU UMa systems and suggest that this is because these secondaries do not have a single valued mass–radius relationship. We highlight the unreliability of mass ratios derived by applying the SU UMa expression to the AM CVn binaries. 相似文献
