The studies of auroras at Russian Antarctic observatories in the Southern Hemisphere began in 1957 during the second Complex Antarctic expedition and performed almost continuously up to 1993 during more than 30 years. Many observers of auroras and scientists that analyzed obtained results participated in these studies. Members of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AANII), Russian Committee on Hydrometeorology (Rosgidromet); Pushkov Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere, and Radiowave Propagation, Russian Academy of Sciences (IZMIRAN); Vernov Institute of Nuclear Physics, Moscow State University (NIIYaF MGU); Polar Geophysical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences (PGI); St. Petersburg State University (SPbGU); Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth (IFZ); Shafer Institute of Cosmophysical Research and Aeronomy, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences (IKFIA SB RAN); and other institutions made an enormous contribution to the studies of Antarctic auroras. The main results of the studies of Antarctic auroras, obtained by Russian scientists, are reviewed in this work.  相似文献

By comparing the hydrocarbons of benthic invertebrates from two Antarctic sites, Clarke & Law (1981) concluded that for one of their locations the source was local. In doing so, they questioned our suggestion that a world-wide dissemination of pyrolysis products was partly responsible (Platt & Mackie, 1979). However, we argue here that in fact their results confirm our contention. We also present some new data on the aromatic hydrocarbons of a South Georgia starfish.  相似文献

The behaviour of the Southern Hemisphere stratosphere has attracted considerable interest, and been compared with the Northern Hemisphere, since the International Geophysical Year (1957–58) when the sudden (explosive or accelerated) springtime warming phenomenon in the Antarctic was first observed. Over the years studies of upper air temperature and wind observations have been made, principally through the spring months when the polar vortex breakdown occurs, utilising both ground-based (rawinsonde, rocket) and more recently, satellite-derived data. Although the radiosonde-derived temperature data are limited both by the number of reporting stations, and the practical difficulty of securing observations much above the 100 hPa level, useful records exist from 1956 or 1957. These have shown that in the 1959 southern spring, the lower stratosphere was relatively colder, and the warming rate through the season was essentially more regular, with little evidence of the marked but short-lived temperature fluctuations usually found. Similar, but not quite such wide-spread conditions occurred again in the 1961 spring. In another study, 30 hPa temperature fields over the Antarctic continent, which could be drawn for the 1967 spring, showed the complexity of the polar vortex breakdown. These features are recalled because extension of the 100 hPa springtime temperature series for the Australian Antarctic station at Casey (66.3°S, 110.5°E) shows that in 1985 and part of 1986, the temperature behaviour there was similar to, but not quite so extreme as that which occurred at Mirny (66.5°S, 93.0°E) in 1959.  相似文献

Ground-based dual-frequency GPS observations can be used to create images of electron density. This is well established for the Arctic ionosphere; here one of the first results is presented for the Antarctic. In this study, the GPS receivers in the Antarctic are supplemented with another GPS receiver onboard CHAMP. The aim of the study is to demonstrate the technique for investigating geophysical events, for example, an ionospheric disturbance period on 11 February 2004. The images have been validated by in-situ measurements from DMSP and CHAMP satellites, as well as Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) convection patterns, which are able to confirm the location, presence, and transportation of large-scale plasma patches. This study indicates that although the convection still dominates in the high-latitude ionosphere, soft precipitation within the polar cap may play a role in the evolution of the polar patches. It also illustrates the potential for future multi-instrument studies of the Antarctic.  相似文献

Based on data from literature and archival sources, we have further processed and analyzed the results of geomagnetic measurements made during the 1772–1775 Second World Expedition by James Cook and the 1819–1821 overseas Antarctic Expedition by Russian mariners Bellingshausen and Lazarev. Comparison with the GUFM historical model showed that there are systematic differences in the spatial structure of both the declination and its secular variation. The results obtained can serve as a basis for the construction of regional models of the geomagnetic field for the Antarctic region.  相似文献

An26Al survey by non-destructive gamma ray spectrometry was conducted as part of the preliminary examination effort for Antarctic meteorites. A total of 220 samples were studied. The majority of the samples were from the Allan Hills area; however, samples from several other sites, including the Yamato Mountains, were studied. Compared to worldwide falls and finds, the Antarctic group shows a clear trend toward lower26Al levels. At leasr 10% of the samples studied were clearly undersaturated in26Al. The frequency of undersaturated samples suggests that terrestrial ages of several hundred thousand years are common among the Antarctic meteorite collection. The absence of samples with extremely low26Al implies that the upper limit for terrestrial ages in the Antarctic is on the order of 1 million years.  相似文献

The numerous Miocene-Recent alkaline volcanic outcrops in the Antarctic Peninsula form a substantial volcanic province, the least well-known part of a major belt of alkaline volcanism that extends between South America and New Zealand. The outcrops consists mainly of aa and pahoehoe lavas and hyaloclastites which locally contain accidental nodules of spinel lherzolite and other mantle-derived lithologies. The province is predominantly basaltic with two major differentiation lineages: (1) a sodic series of olivine and alkali basalt, hawaiite, mugearite, trachy-phonolite and trachyte; and (2) a relatively potassic, highly undersaturated series of basanite, tephrite and phono-tephrite. All the lavas show varying effects of fractionation by crystallization of olivine and clinopyroxene, joined by plagioclase in the hawaiites to trachytes. Fractional crystallization can probably explain most of the chemical variation observed within each outcrop, but variable partial melting is necessary to account for the differences in incompatible element enrichment between the two series, and between the individual outcrops. The degree of partial melting may not have exceeded 3%, as is the case for many other alkaline magmas.The volcanism is an intraplate phenomenon but there is no correlation in timing between the cessation of subduction and the inception of alkaline volcanism. The activity cannot be related to the passage of the coupled Pacific-Antarctic plate over a stationary mantle hot-spot. Although the precise causal relationship with tectonic setting is unknown, regional extension was a prerequisite for giving the magmas rapid access to the surface.  相似文献

We made a summary of the materials from DSDP and ODP initial reports on deep-sea drilling and other data on areal and stratigraphic distributions and compositions of pyroclastic material in the sediments of the Antarctic Atlantic. These data were used to study the geological history of the region, which was formed approximately 165 Ma ago as Gondwana broke up as part of the Southern Ocean, being accompanied by explosive volcanism of various types (volcano-fissure volcanism, riftogenic, plume-induced, that of “hot spots,” and the island arc type).  相似文献

Tidal mixing plays an important role in the modification of dense water masses around the Antarctic continent. In addition to the vertical (diapycnal) mixing in the near-bottom layers, lateral mixing can also be of relevance in some areas. A numerical tide simulation shows that lateral tidal mixing is not uniformly distributed along the shelf break. In particular, strong mixing occurs all along the Ross Sea and Southern Weddell Sea shelf breaks, while other regions (e.g., the western Weddell Sea) are relatively quiet. The latter regions correspond surprisingly well to areas where indications for cross-shelf exchange of dense water masses have been found. The results suggest that lateral tidal mixing may account for the relatively small contribution of Ross Sea dense water masses to Antarctic Bottom Water.  相似文献
