The catalogue of the light curve solutions of contact binary stars was updated. Based on the catalogue data we call the attention to a remarkable gap in the temperature distribution of contact binaries which remained unexplained. Sixteen new eclipsing binaries have been discovered by the MOST satellite among guide stars used to point its telescope in various fields. Several previously known eclipsing binaries were also observed by MOST with unprecedented quality. Among the objects we discuss in more detail are short‐period eclipsing binaries with eccentric orbits in young open clusters: V578 Mon in NGC 2244 and HD 47934 in NGC 2264. Long nearly‐continuous photometric runs made it possible to discover three long‐period eclipsing binaries with orbits seen almost edge‐on: HD 45972 with P = 28.1 days and two systems (GSC 154 1247 and GSC 2141 526) with P > 25 days. The high precision of the satellite data led to discoveries of binaries with very shallow eclipses (e.g., HD 46180 with A = 0.016 mag, and HD 47934 with A = 0.025 mag). Archer declared HD 105020 to be an Algol-type binary with a K-type main star and a period as short as two days. This, if confirmed, would be very significant. We made 21 observations of this star on three nights in 1984 using the 2.0-m telescope and Reticon system of McDonald Observatory, and 3 observations on two nights in 1991 using the 2.1-m telescope with TI2 CCD system of Kitt peak Observatory and found (1) that the radial velocity varied little over successive nights and the spin velocity to be small, hence it cannot be an Algol star with a two-day period and (2) that the radial velocity varied considerably at different times, and that the star could well be a spectroscopic binary with a period of about 20 days.  相似文献

CCD photometric observations with B and V passbands were performed on the contact binary V3 in the field of open cluster M37. The solutions were obtained for data from both B and V passbands along with R passband given by Hartman et al.using the Wilson-Devinney code. The positive O'Connell effect was observed in all the three passbands and its associated cool spot parameters were derived. The results indicate that the spot parameters have not shown any significant variability during the last four years. The spot radius was found to be 40and located close to the equator of the secondary component. The absolute parameters of the system were derived using the empirical relations given by Gazeas et al.  相似文献

The stability and final outcome of a strongly interacting binary asteroid system is considered. We discuss the implications of the system transferring energy and angular momentum between rotational and translational motion while conserving the total system energy and angular momentum. Using these results we can develop a set of sufficient conditions for stability against escape and impact. These allow us to delineate several classes of final outcomes for a binary asteroid system, each of which may have implications for asteroid observations. The effects of energy dissipation on an asteroid binary system are also considered and are shown to be able to change the stability of the system against escape and impact. An example computation for the near-Earth asteroid binary 1996 FG3 is given along with a series of numerical explorations of an evolving binary system consisting of an ellipsoid and a sphere of equal mass.  相似文献

Binary systems showing both apsidal motion and light travel time (LTT) effects which cause orbital period changes in close binaries were studied. 15 triple systems showing apsidal motion were found by searching the literature, and a table including the important parameters of these systems was constructed. Six of the systems given in this table were selected and observed photometrically. Existence of both apsidal motion and LTT effects in all selected systems was investigated by means of the analysis of their eclipse times. The mean observed internal structure constants,  log = k 2,obs  , and contributions to the apsidal motion from the theory of General Relativity and the third/fourth bodies were calculated. The masses of the third/fourth bodies and some characteristics of their orbits were also calculated.  相似文献

Time scales of the transition from contact binary systems of the W UMa type to single stars of the blue straggler type are estimated. A model of one-way mass transfer from the primary component to the companion inside a common envelope (Eggen et al.) and a model of a contact binary lying on the zero-age main sequence with a companion that is losing mass (F. van't Veer) are used to calculate these scales. The merging times of components were calculated for 304 contact systems of the W UMa type from the Catalog of Approximate Photometric and Absolute Elements of Eclipsing Variable Stars on a scale of loss of mass and orbital angular momentum due to magnetic braking, under the assumption of synchronization of the axial rotation and orbital revolution. On the basis of the resulting statistics, the characteristic merging scales are 0.4-0.6 and 0.5-0.7 Gyr, respectively, for the above two models. The results of a comparison with the work of other authors are discussed.  相似文献

Following a brief history of measurement of eclipsing binary mass ratios from light curves, we show that photometric mass ratios for overcontact and semi-detached binaries are reliable because the relative stellar radii, R/a, are accurately measured and not, as commonly claimed, because of information in the light variation outside eclipse. We explore the accuracy of photometric mass ratios by solving synthetic data of typical precisions for a semi-detached and an overcontact binary for orbital inclinations from 89 down into the partial eclipse range.  相似文献

An inequality that allows the minimum sum of the component masses for a binary, M0, to be determined was derived from simple geometric considerations. This quantity satisfies the observed orbital motion according to Newton's law with a known parallax. The M0 value can be calculated if the apparent-motion parameters for the components, including the curvature of the observed short orbital arc, were determined from observations. We estimated M0 for 14 Pulkovo program stars for which the apparent orbital arc covered with observations was no less than 10°. We compare M0 with the masses estimated from the mass-luminosity relation. A significant mass excess was found for the star ADS 10329.  相似文献

We present a program for observations of spectroscopic binaries with VLTI. The aim of such observations is to obtain high accuracy measurements of stellar parameters, in particular masses, combining the visual orbit with spectroscopic orbital elements. We selected a sample of spectroscopic binaries, including pre-main sequence stars, using the estimated angular nodal separation as a criterion for feasibility. A cross-check with the 4th catalog of measurements of binary stars (Hartkopf, 2001) was carried out and we discuss the statistical properties of the sample. We have determined for the first time a spectroscopic orbit for WX Cnc. The orbital elements are V0 = +9.8 km/s, k1 = 110.2 km/s, K2 = 149.0 km/s, To = HJD 2446 480.0309. After combining with the published photometric results, we derive the the following absolute parameters: A = 6.32R, R1 = 1.53R, R2=1.18R, M1 = 1.29 M, M2 = 0.96M. The spectroscopic mass-ratio is q = 0.74.  相似文献
