In this paper, the sizes of the broad emission line regions (BLRs) and black hole (BH) masses of double-peaked broad low-ionization emission line emitters (DBP emitters) are compared using different methods: virial BH masses versus BH masses from stellar velocity dispersions, the size of BLRs from the continuum luminosity versus the size of BLRs from the accretion disc model. First, the virial BH masses of DBP emitters estimated by the continuum luminosity and linewidth of broad Hβ are about six times (a much larger value, if including another DBP emitters, of which the stellar velocity dispersions are traced by the linewidths of narrow emission lines) larger than the BH masses estimated from the relation   M BH–σ  which is a more accurate relation to estimate BH masses. Second, the sizes of the BLRs of DBP emitters estimated by the empirical relation of   R BLR– L 5100 Å  are about three times (a much larger value, if including another DBP emitters, of which the stellar velocity dispersions are traced by the linewidths of narrow emission lines) larger than the mean flux-weighted sizes of BLRs of DBP emitters estimated by the accretion disc model. The higher electron density of BLRs of DBP emitters would be the main reason which leads to smaller size of BLRs than the predicted value from the continuum luminosity.  相似文献

Several radio galaxies are known that show radio morphological signatures that are best interpreted as restarting of nuclear activity after a period of quiescence. The conditions surrounding the phenomenon of nuclear recurrence are not understood. In this paper we have attempted to address this question by examining the nuclear fuelling characteristics in a sample of restarting radio galaxies. We have examined the detection rate for molecular gas in a representative sample of nine restarting radio galaxies, for seven of which we present new upper limits to the molecular gas mass derived from CO line observations we made with the IRAM 30-m telescope. We derive a low CO detection rate for the relatively young restarted radio galaxies suggesting that the cessation of the nuclear activity and its subsequent restarting may be a result of instabilities in the fuelling process rather than a case of depletion of fuel followed by a recent fuel acquisition. It appears that abundant molecular gas content at the level of few  108–109 M  does not necessarily accompany the nuclear restarting phenomenon. For comparison we also discuss the molecular gas properties of five normal giant radio galaxies, three of which we observed using Swedish-ESO Millimetre Telescope (SEST). Despite obvious signs of interactions and nuclear dust discs none of them has been found to host significant quantities of molecular gas.  相似文献

We report on the analysis of a ∼60-ks XMM–Newton observation of the bright, narrow emission line quasar PG1211+143. Absorption lines are seen in both European Photon Imaging Camera and Reflection Grating Spectrometer spectra corresponding to H- and He-like ions of Fe, S, Mg, Ne, O, N and C. The observed line energies indicate an ionized outflow velocity of ∼24 000 km s−1. The highest energy lines require a column density of   N H∼ 5 × 1023 cm−2  , at an ionization parameter of  log ξ∼ 3.4  . If the origin of this high-velocity outflow lies in matter being driven from the inner disc, then the flow is likely to be optically thick within a radius of ∼130 Schwarzschild radii, providing a natural explanation for the big blue bump (and strong soft X-ray) emission in PG1211+143.  相似文献

We have carried out targeted submillimetre observations as part of a programme to explore the connection between the rest-frame ultraviolet and far-infrared properties of star-forming galaxies at high redshift, which is currently poorly understood. On the one hand, the Lyman break technique is very effective at selecting     galaxies. On the other, 'blank-field' imaging in the submillimetre seems to turn up sources routinely, amongst which some are star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts. Already much work has been done searching for optical identifications of objects detected using the SCUBA instrument. Here we have taken the opposite approach, performing submillimetre photometry for a sample of Lyman break galaxies, the ultraviolet properties of which imply high star formation rates. The total signal from our Lyman break sample is undetected in the submillimetre, at an rms level of ∼0.5 mJy, which implies that the population of Lyman break galaxies does not constitute a large part of the recently detected blank-field submillimetre sources. However, our one detection suggests that with reasonable SCUBA integrations we might expect to detect those few Lyman break galaxies that are far-infrared brightest.  相似文献

We present a deep Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) search for H  i 21-cm emission from three dwarf galaxies, viz. POX 186, SC 24 and KKR 25. Based, in part, on previous single-dish H  i observations, these galaxies have been classified as a blue compact dwarf (BCD), a dwarf irregular and a transition galaxy, respectively. However, in conflict with previous single-dish detections, we do not detect H  i in SC 24 or KKR 25. We suggest that the previous single-dish measurements were probably confused with the local Galactic emission. In the case of POX 186, we confirm the previous non-detection of H  i but with substantially improved limits on its H  i mass. Our derived upper limits on the H  i mass of SC 24 and KKR 25 are similar to the typical H  i mass limit for dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies, whereas in the case of POX 186, we find that its gas content is somewhat smaller than is typical of BCD galaxies.  相似文献

A new method for deconvolution of the nuclear component of active galaxies is presented, along with some initial results with several nuclear-type objects. Unlike the majority of procedures currently in use, this method is based on the following steps: (a) derivation of seeing-free bulge and disc parameters, (b) construction of a two-dimensional model of the galaxy, (c) derivation of a point-spread function (PSF) from star profiles and convolution of the bulge+disc model with the obtained PSF and (d) extraction of the seeing-convolved model radial profile and subtraction from the observed one. The residual gives the nuclear component. Only standard image processing packages are used.  相似文献

A number of studies have shown that the visibility of scattered broad emission lines in Seyfert 2 galaxies is strongly dependent on the IRAS     flux ratio, where those Seyfert 2 galaxies with 'warm' IRAS colours show polarized broad line emission. It is now clear that this effect is owing to the increasing dominance of the galactic rather than the active galactic nucleus (AGN) emission at 60 μm in less-luminous 'cool' Seyfert 2 galaxies. However, we present evidence that the 25-μm emission is a good measure of the AGN luminosity for most Seyfert 2 galaxies. Using this result, we show that the visibility of scattered broad line emission has a dependence on the AGN luminosity. The observations can be interpreted self-consistently if the scaleheight of the scattering zone varies with central source luminosity whilst the scaleheight of the obscuring torus is approximately constant.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to determine the fractions of different spiral galaxy types, especially bulgeless disks, from a complete and homogeneous sample of 15 127 edge‐on disk galaxies extracted from the sixth data release from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The sample is divided in broad morphological classes and sub types consisting of galaxies with bulges, intermediate types and galaxies which appear bulgeless. A small fraction of disky irregulars is also detected. The morphological separation is based on automated classification criteria which resemble the bulge sizes and the flatness of the disks. Each of these broad classes contains about 1/3 of the total sample. Using strict criteria for selecting pure bulgeless galaxies leads to a fraction of 15% of simple disk galaxies. We compare this fraction to other galaxy catalogs and find an excellent agreement of the observed frequency of bulgeless galaxies. Although the fraction of simple disk galaxies in this study does not represent a “cosmic” fraction of bulgeless galaxies, it shows that the relative abundance of pure disks is comparable to other studies and offers a profound value of the frequency of simple disks in the local Universe. This fraction of simple disks emphasizes the challenge for formation and evolution models of disk galaxies since these models are hard pressed to explain the observed frequency of these objects (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We explore the relationship between the extended radio and line emission for a radio-loud quasar sample including both core-dominated and lobe-dominated quasars. A strong correlation is present between the extended radio and broad-line emission. The core emission is also correlated with the broad-line emission for core-dominated quasars in the sample. The statistical behaviour of the core emission of lobe-dominated quasars is rather different from that of core-dominated quasars. The extended radio luminosity is a good tracer for jet power, while the core luminosity can only be a jet power tracer for core-dominated quasars.  相似文献

It has been shown that the radio emission properties of spiral galaxies, if the other conditions are the same, are determined rather by the presence of the close neighbours than by space density of galaxies around them. The rate of occurence of radio sources and their radio luminosities among the spiral members of groups of galaxies depend on the projected seperation between them and their nearest neighbour.
